3-2-4 सुपि स्थः वृत्तिः सुपीति योगो विभज्यते । सुपि उपपदे आदन्तात्कः स्यात् । तत: 'स्थ:'। सुपि तिष्ठते: क: स्यात्। आरम्भसामर्थ्याद्भावे। This rule is split in to two parts. The first part is सुपि - When in composition with a पदम् which ends in a सुप् affix (ref. 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा..), a verbal root which ends in a आकारः may take the affix 'क'। The second part is 'स्थ:' -- When in composition with a पदम् which ends in a सुप् affix (ref. 4-1-2 4-1-2 स्वौजसमौट्छष्टा..), the verbal root √स्था (ष्ठा गतिनिवृत्तौ १. १०७७) may take the affix 'क' to denote the action itself (and not the agent of the action.) उदाहरणम् -- द्वाभ्यां पिबतीति द्विपः derived from √पा (पा पाने १. १०७४)। द्वि + भ्याम् + पा + क 3-2-4 (सुपि) Note: In the सूत्रम् 3-2-4 (सुपि), the term सुपि ends in the seventh (locative) case. Hence 'द्वि + भ्याम्' gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 3-1-92. = द्वि + भ्याम् + पा + अ 1-3-8, 1-3-9. Note: The affix 'क' is a कित्। This allows 6-4-64 to apply in the next step. = द्वि + भ्याम् + प् + अ 6-4-64, 1-1-52 = द्वि + भ्याम् + प Now we form the compound between 'द्वि भ्याम्' (which is the उपपदम्) and 'प' using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19. Note: Here 'द्वि भ्याम्' is the उपपदम् and hence it gets the उपसर्जन-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-43 In the compound, 'द्वि भ्याम्' is placed in the prior position as per 2-2-30 'द्वि भ्याम् + प' gets प्रातिपदिक-सञ्ज्ञा by 1-2-46 = द्विप 2-4-71 उदाहरणम् -- आखूनामुत्थानम् = आखूत्थ:। derived from √स्था (ष्ठा गतिनिवृत्तौ १. १०७७) with the उपसर्ग: 'उद्'। आखु + आम् + उद् स्था + क 3-2-4 (स्थ:) Note: In the सूत्रम् 3-2-4 (स्थ:), the term सुपि (which ends in the seventh (locative) case) comes as अनुवृत्ति: from the prior सूत्रम् 3-2-4 (सुपि)। Hence 'आखु + आम्' gets the उपपद-सञ्ज्ञा here by 3-1-92 = आखु + आम् + उद् स्था + अ 1-3-8, 1-3-9. Note: The affix 'क' is a कित्। This allows 6-4-64 to apply in the next step. = आखु + आम् + उद् स्थ् + अ 6-4-64, 1-1-52 = आखु + आम् + उद् स्थ Now we form the compound between 'आखु + आम्' (which is the उपपदम्) and 'उद् स्थ' using the सूत्रम् 2-2-19.
