Japanese/English
Former prisoners of war in Britain will on Thursday take their protest to the gates of Downing Street and deliver a letter to the prime minister before a visit by Emperor Akihito.
It will be their fourth protest in three days as they continue to haunt the emperor during his visit.
On Wednesday, Emperor Akihito managed to keep his composure as he was dogged by protesters during his visit to Wales.
Former POWs also turned up later in the day as the emperor and his wife attended a white-tie dinner in London's financial district hosted by the Lord Mayor of London.
The shouts of about 30 former civilian prisoners could be heard over the bagpipers welcoming the Emperor and Empress to London's Guildhall on Wednesday night.
But once again, Emperor Akihito took the demonstrators in stride, continuing with his official duties, including inspecting the honour guard stationed outside Guildhall.
It was the second day of protests over Akihito's state visit to the U-K, a visit which was at the invitation of Queen Elizabeth II.
His trip has angered former prisoners of war in Britain, who are demanding a formal apology for Japan's treatment of them in the Second World War.
But the host of the Guildhall banquet - London's Lord Mayor, Alderman Richard Nichols - assured his Japanese guests that they were very welcome.
He added that Britain and Japan both wished to see a stable climate for investment.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Our countries have common interests and aspirations and we both wish to see a stable and prosperous world where investment in free trade and industrial services and products thrive."
SUPER CAPTION: London's Lord Mayor, Alderman Richard Nichols
At a Buckingham Palace banquet on Tuesday, Akihito had alluded to the protests, saying he and the empress could never forget the suffering of so many people during the war.
During his speech at Guildhall 24 hours later, he said he hoped his visit would bring Britain and Japan closer together.
SOUNDBITE: (Japanese)
"The relationship between the two countries has developed into something important, not just in the economy or finance, but both countries can make contributions to each other. It is a development that I could not have expected during my first visit."
SUPER CAPTION: Emperor Akihito
Japan's Kyodo News Agency has quoted Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto as saying that the emperor has done his best to express his own thoughts frankly without getting involved in politics.
Hashimoto reportedly added that he hoped the Emperor's feelings would be accepted by the British people.
But that hasn't been the case.
Earlier on Wednesday, dozens of former prisoners-of-war turned their backs on Akihito as he arrived in Wales, the main centre of Japan's massive investment in Britain.
The POWs have vowed to protest for the duration of the Emperor's stay in Britain.
Later on Thursday, they will take their protest to 10, Downing Street where they will hand a letter to Prime Minister Tony Blair.
The protesters have rejected his attempts at reconciliation.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Tony Blair said yesterday give him a warm welcome. I think he must be out of his tiny mind."
SUPER CAPTION: Former P-O-W
The emperor is due to attend a reception and lunch hosted by the prime minister at Downing Street on Thursday.
The POWs have promised they'll be there to continue their campaign for an apology from Akihito and compensation from the Japanese government.

U-S President Bill Clinton begun his trip to Asia with a mission to encourage Japan to act to revive its economy, boost recovery throughout the region, and protect U-S prosperity.
The president arrived at Haneda International Airport in Tokyo and headed directly to the Imperial Residence for a meeting with Emperor Akihito.
Clinton's tour of the region will also take him to South Korea and the U-S Pacific territory of Guam.
U-S President Bill Clinton arrived in Tokyo hoping to convince the Japanese government to move decisively in its battle against a downward spiralling economy.
Before boarding Air Force One in Washington, Clinton reiterated his belief that Japan remains the key to protecting American prosperity.
He said opening certain closed Japanese markets to outside competition was essential to progress.
Japan is currently in its worst recession since the end of World War II.
The president is spending roughly 30 hours in the Japanese capital.
His schedule began at the Imperial Palace, where he's having tea with Emperor Akihito.
Later, Clinton is due to appear in a televised town-hall meeting, then return to the palace for an official dinner.
Clinton's five day whirlwind tour of the region will bring him on from Tokyo to Seoul, South Korea, and then to Guam, the U-S Pacific territory that has been hit hard by Japan's recession.
This week Japanese Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi unveiled a 196 (b) billion U-S dollar package of spending and tax cuts to spur Japan's economy.
It is Japan's eighth recovery plan in eight years of economic distress.
In downtown Tokyo, a group of around 100 left-wing activists took to the streets to protest against the Japan-U-S security pact.
The group fears a more engaged Japan in Asia regional security, in association with America, will eventually lead to a militarised Japan.
Clinton and Prime Minister Obuchi are expected to discuss a missile self defence system to protect Japan against the threat of North Korean aggression.
The problem of communist North Korea, which startled the world - especially Japan - by test-firing a missile over Japan on August 31 will also be discussed.
Tokyo and Washington are worried by North Korea's missile and nuclear weapons ambitions.
The North is suspected of building an underground site for the development of nuclear weapons.

The third day of Japan's Emperor Akihito state visit to Britain has ended with a banquet in London on Thursday night.
Akihito and his wife, Michiko were joined for the occasion by the reigning British monarch - Queen Elizabeth II.
But former prisoners-of-war, who have been following Akihito throughout the day, were out in force at the function.
The event was held at the Victoria and Albert museum, named in honour of Britain's one-time Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert.
Once again, former Japanese labour camp internees made their voices heard.
They staged a protest and symbolically turned their backs on the Emperor when he arrived for the banquet.
Among the dignitaries attending the banquet was Lady Thatcher, Britain's former Prime Minister.
Like the other guests - she could not fail to notice the protest by the small group of former P-O-W's and civilian prisoners who are calling from further compensation from the Japanese government.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"The less he responds the harder we will fight. We are determined to win."
SUPER CAPTION: Protester
Meanwhile, other onlookers - many of them tourists - were happy just to get a glimpse of members of both the British and Japanese royal family.

http://www.euronews.com/ Exactly a year on from the enormously destructive earthquake and tsunami, Japan has commemorated the events of that day in ceremonies around the country.
Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko led a minute of silence in Tokyo's National Theatre at the precise moment that the 9.0 magnitude tremor unleashed a wall of water that ravaged the northeast coast, killing thousands.
The country is still grappling with the cost, both human and economic.
"It is important that we do not forget the memories of this big earthquake and pass them onto our descendants, so that readiness for natural disasters is fostered and we can make progress towards building a safer country," said the Emperor.
As well as dealing with the emotional aftermath of the the disaster, Japan is still in the grips of the nuclear fallout from the crippled Fukushima plant.
Residents from a nearby town, abandoned afterwards, returned home for a few hours to pay their respects to those lost 12 months ago.
Tens of thousands of people evacuated from the area may never be allowed back to their homes.
TEPCO the operator, much criticised for its failure to prepare for the disaster, has issued a fresh apology, vowing to work to solve its problems with safety as first priority.
Once again the terrible images of the ocean invading the land are prominent in people's minds, as Japan slowly recovers from the tragedy that left some 19,000 dead or missing.

Mexico's President Ernesto Zedillo, who is in Japan on an official tour, has visited the Japanese Emperor Akihito.
The two discussed the role of Japanese immigrants in Mexico, 100 years after the first Japanese emigrated to Mexico.
Zedillo's wife, Nilda Patricia, and Empress Michiko also joined in the meeting at the Imperial Palace.
The Mexican president called on the emperor immediately after an official welcoming ceremony at the Akasaka Palace, where Japan's state visitors stay.
The visit was to mark the 100th anniversary of Japanese immigration to Mexico.
The Mexican leader and his wife were officially welcomed at the Palace by Emperor Akihito and the Empress Michiko.
Zedillo brought along a book commemorating the one hundredth anniversary of the Japanese immigration.
He urged the Emperor to send a member of the imperial family to attend commemorative celebrations next May in Mexico.
Later Tuesday, Zedillo and his wife were the guests of honour at a banquet given by the imperial couple.
Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto was among the guests.
In his speech at the banquet, Zedillo underlined the importance of bilateral relations between the two countries.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
"One of the main aims of this visit is to give a vision of the enormous opportunities for investment and trade, exchange and cooperation between Japan and Mexico. I am sure that the friendship between both countries is the most solid base to take advantage of these opportunities to benefit Japanese and Mexicans.
SUPER CAPTION: Ernesto Zedillo, President of Mexico
On Wednesday, Zedillo plans to talk to Hashimoto about Japanese investment in Mexico and issues concerning the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.
Mexico and Chile are the only Latin American nations among APEC's 18 members.
During a state visit to Mexico last year, Hashimoto promised financing packages for Mexican trade and environmental projects.
Japan is Mexico's third largest trading partner after the United States and Germany, its second biggest creditor-nation, and its fourth largest investor.
Trade between them totaled 5.7 (b) billion dollars in 1996, with Mexican exports amounting to 898 (m) million dollars.
Zedillo last visited Japan in November 1995 for an APEC summit in Osaka, but this is his first state visit to the country.

On the last day of his state visit to the U-K, Emperor Akihito of Japan, spoke of the strong relationship between the two countries.
The Emperor's speech at a reception in London, followed a visit to national history organisation where he met people who share his enthusiasm for the study of Gobi fish.
Former World War II prisoners once again held small demonstrations - but the Emperor met another group of veterans angry about the protests.
On the last day of his state visit to the U-K, the Emperor of Japan met a group of British enthusiasts who share his interest in Gobi fish.
Akihito spends much of his time studying and publishing academic papers about the fish, which are particularly common around Japan.
Emperor Akihito visited the Linnean Society of London, a natural history organisation founded in 1788 to meet other experts.
Meanwhile, Empress Michiko, visited the headquarters of the British Red Cross after saying goodbye to Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace.
This trip - at the invitation of the Queen - has stirred controversy among former internees of Japanese Prisoner of War camps.
The Empress showed composure as a group of nine demonstrators held placards, many protesting that Japanese troops had confiscated Red Cross parcels sent to prisoners during World War II.
And the campaigners who have plagued the couple's trip were also there to confront Emperor Akihito as he went on to a luncheon at a central London hotel.
The event was hosted by a number of British and Japanese organisations, and he spoke of the efforts that had been made to build a strong relationship between the two countries.
SOUNDBITE: (Japanese)
"It is most heartening that today through the tireless efforts of a great many people to heal the wounds of war and establish a new co-operative relationship, great and closer relations are being brought about between our two countries."
SUPER CAPTION: Emperor Akihito of Japan
Once again, a small group of protesters continued in their campaign to try and win what they call 'a real apology' and compensation for their suffering in Japanese prison camps during World War Two.
But inside the hotel, the Emperor was due to meet five veterans of the Second World War who were guests at the reception - and who said they would be apologising for the protests against an ally of Britain.
The British Prime Minister, Tony Blair has said that Japan has apologised enough for war time atrocities and will not back the ex-POW demands.

Japanese/Nat
Japan has marked the 10th anniversary of Emperor Akihito's ascension to the throne with a festival-like celebration of his reign.
Thousands turned out in Tokyo to see a procession of traditional dancers, followed by a performance outside the Emperor's sprawling palace.
A handful of republican demonstrators was the only sign that the world's oldest throne may not still enjoy full public support.
A parade by traditional dancers, many in ancient costumes, swept down the streets of central Tokyo.
The mainly elderly crowd watched and applauded as "taiko" drummers riding on floats thundered through the city.
The festivities were suitably elaborate, and were commensurate with Akihito's status as the guardian of the world's longest-running monarchy.
According to legend, he is 125th in a royal line begun by Emperor Jimmu in 660 B-C.
But there is opposition to Japan's royal dynasty.
Marchers chanted slogans denouncing the use of the national anthem 'Kimigayo' and against the use of the national flag, the "Hinomaru".
These left-wing opponents regard the royals, the flag and the anthem as symbols of Japan's imperialist past -- and a sign Tokyo may harbour imperialist ambitions.
The imperial couple addressed the touchy subject in a rare news conference earlier this week.
Responding to pre-selected questions, the Emperor once again denied having imperialist ambitions.
SOUNDBITE: (Japanese)
"Countless people who lived in regions devastated by war have died. I have utmost sorrow over this fact."
SUPERCAPTION: Akihito, Emperor of Japan
Cellist Yo-Yo Ma played at the National Theatre and pianist Yoshiki performed a concerto he dedicated to Akihito.
More than 100-thousand are said to have turned out for the festive celebrations, which had a popular, festive air, breaking with the staid, exclusive aura of most royal events here.
SOUNDBITE: (Japanese)
"I'm deeply grateful for all of you gathering here on the tenth anniversary of my enthronement. I treasure the emotions shared by the Japanese people over the last ten years."
SUPERCAPTION: Akihito, Emperor of Japan
There were more traditional moments.
The leader of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party led a traditional bow of respect to Akihito.
And in a move that would outrage anti-monarchists, the crowd sang the national anthem.
Emperor Akihito and his wife have tried to cultivate a warmer image, visiting disaster victims and centres for the handicapped.
And the tactic seems to be working.
Many Japanese say they appreciate his recent efforts -- and many more say they simply can't imagine not having an emperor.

Another missed one-on-one tackle by a front-rower, however, allowed Adriaan Strauss to waltz straight upfield for a very similar score to De Jager’s. It mattered not; Japan conjured the move of the game, a sweet inside ball to the onrushing wing Akihito Yamada creating space for the unstoppable Goromaru, playing his 53rd Test for his country, to score a try for the ages in the right corner.
Cue pandemonium. Remarkably, though, it was only the prelude to an even more mind-blowing final act, Leitch turning down a potential equalising kick at goal to press for glory. One surge went to the TMO but there was no conclusive evidence, leaving the 30-year-old Hesketh, born in Napier, to apply the final dagger to Springbok morale. It will surely be enough to prompt the Japanese authorities to get their act together and ensure they remain as hosts of the 2019 World Cup, rather than ceding it to South Africa because of worries about infrastructure and costs. Their insanely brave on-field representatives deserve no less.
