On Uncommon Knowledge, Richard A. Epstein, the Peter and Kirsten Bedford Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, discusses inequality, taxes, globalization, free markets, politics, health care, and gay marriage. Epstein states that the central theme of his book The Classical Liberal Constitution is to develop sufficiently stable government structures and individual rights to raise everybody simultaneously when the government has to regulate or tax. The prevailing politics is “I win, you lose,” and the Supreme Court has done nothing to slow this trend. Epstein notes that a shrinking economic pie is always a losing proposition. He refers to the famous quote concerning his philosophy, “May justice reign even if the heavens fall.” Epstein also discusses other Supreme Court decisions, including the constitutionality of gay marriage.

A professor at the University of Chicago for more than 30 years, Gary Becker is a founder of the Chicago school of economics. A winner of the John Bates Clark Medal and of the Nobel Prize in Economics, he is also a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution.
The U.S. economy grew robustly from 1983 to 2008. And then everything collapsed. What happened? Gary Becker apportions blame and grades the Bush administration's response to the financial crisis: "He [Bush] wouldn't get an A. But I wouldn't give him a C either." Becker also rates the initial and continuing response of the U.S. Federal Reserve to the crisis. Finally, when confronted with the dilemma of how to create economic policy amid conflicting opinions by expert economists, he puts his faith in the people: "What I trust with the American people is that they have always had a lot of common sense. ... And I think most Americans believe, and I think they are correct in that belief, that the private sector has shown that it performs better overall, not 100 percent, but...a lot better overall than the public sector does."

Eric Hanushek is the Paul and Jean Hanna Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution of Stanford University. He is a leader in the development of economic analysis of educational issues.
The Millennium Development Goals or MDGs yielded a lot of success in terms of dramatic increases in schooling rates. But there was little focus on quality. There was, as Professor Hanushek says, "too much attendance without learning".
This time around with the UN's SDGs, Prof. Hanushek wants us to focus on Universal Basic Skills - better quality education for more students around the world. Indeed, long-term growth of a country depends "almost entirely on the skills of the population." Take a listen to Prof. Hanushek's Keynote Speech on Implementing the New Education Agenda.

It is becoming increasingly obvious that the United States needs reliable and inexpensive energy to propel our economy and protect our national security interests. Game Changers presents five research and development efforts from American universities that offer a cheaper, cleaner, and more secure national energy system. Drawing from the efforts of the MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI) and other leading university research centers, the book describes some of the energy innovations that will transform our future: natural gas from shales, solar photovoltaics, grid-scale electricity storage, electric cars, and LED lighting. For each of these innovations, the authors detail what is available today, what is near at hand, and what is on the horizon. In addition, they show how extreme energy reliability and performance demands put the United States military at the leading edge of driving energy innovations, and survey potentially game-changing energy technologies currently being put into use by the U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force, on base and in forward deployment. The more choices our laboratories put on the table, the less constrained we are in using them to reach the things we really care about—health, family, business, culture, faith, and delight. This is what game changers are ultimately about.
