I’m going to go out on a limb here and say you’ve probably had chapped lips at some point.
Here’s what’s happening. Your lips are pretty delicate things – this one at the top is your Labium superius oris, and the one at the bottom is your Labium inferius oris. Collectively they form an enormously sensitive, incredibly flexible part of your body.
However, they also have some vulnerabilities. For instance, the skin of your lips is different from the rest of your face – let’s take a closer look.
Here we go – this is your skin!
The outer layer is called the epidermis, and it has a protective covering called the stratum corneum. Underneath your epidermis is another layer of skin, the dermis.
Like the rest of your skin, your lips have all three of these layers -- the difference is that the stratum corneum on your lips is way thinner than it is anywhere else on your body. In fact, it’s part of the reason people’s lips have that alluring red or pink pigment. It comes from underlying blood vessels -- red-colored, blood-filled capillaries close to the thin skin on your lips.
Next, your lips also don't have the oil and sweat glands that protect other parts of your skin. Their only source of moisture is your saliva, and that's why they can easily become dry and chapped.
And that’s usually the culprit here: hydration. We often experience chapped lips in cold weather – not because our lips are allergic to winter or anything, but instead because the outside air tends to be drier, and this also dries out the lips.
And this drying out is the leading cause of chapped lips, also known as common cheilitis. Luckily, there are some pretty simple ways to prevent this.
First, and no matter what the cause of your chapped lips might be… stop licking them! I know, I know it can be a difficult habit to break. But licking your lips can contribute significantly to dry, cracked skin. The saliva evaporates quickly, taking with it any moisture that was already on your lips and leaving them even drier, especially in winter air.
And speaking of amazing segueways, let’s tackle weather-related chapping. If you have very dry air in your house, consider investing in a humidifier.
If you’re outside, then protect your lips with a product that contains beeswax or petrolatum, which will help maintain your lips' hydration. If you plan to be out in the sun for awhile, help prevent dryness by using a sunscreen on your lips as well. A lip balm with SPF in it could help address both of these issues at once -- and, as always, drinking plenty of fluids is a great move for your entire body, not just your lips.
And that’s it. Well, almost. We didn’t talk about the multiple other causes of chapped lips, or lip balm addiction, or whether some of the ingredients in those things actually cause chapped lips – an interesting little conspiracy theory.

Aegean civilization is a general term for the Bronze Age civilizations of Greece around the Aegean Sea. There are three distinct but communicating and interacting geographic regions covered by this term: Crete, the Cyclades and the Greek mainland. Crete is associated with the Minoan civilization from the Early Bronze Age. The Cyclades converge with the mainland during the Early Helladic ("Minyan") period and with Crete in the Middle Minoan period. From ca. 1450 BC (Late Helladic, Late Minoan), the Greek Mycenaean civilization spreads to Crete.
The curtain-wall and towers of the Mycenaean citadel, its gate with heraldic lions, and the great "Treasury of Atreus" had borne silent witness for ages before Heinrich Schliemann's time; but they were supposed only to speak to the Homeric, or, at farthest, a rude Heroic beginning of purely Hellenic civilization. It was not until Schliemann exposed the contents of the graves which lay just inside the gate, that scholars recognized the advanced stage of art which prehistoric dwellers in the Mycenaean citadel had attained.
There had been, however, a good deal of other evidence available before 1876, which, had it been collated and seriously studied, might have discounted the sensation that the discovery of the citadel graves eventually made. Although it was recognized that certain tributaries, represented for example, in the XVIIIth Dynasty tomb of Rekhmara at Egyptian Thebes as bearing vases of peculiar forms, were of some Mediterranean race, neither their precise habitat nor the degree of their civilization could be determined while so few actual prehistoric remains were known in the Mediterranean lands. Nor did the Aegean objects which were lying obscurely in museums in 1870, or thereabouts, provide a sufficient test of the real basis underlying the Hellenic myths of the Argolid, the Troad and Crete, to cause these to be taken seriously. Aegean vases have been exhibited both at Sèvres and Neuchatel since about 1840, the provenance (i.e. source or origin) being in the one case Phylakope in Melos, in the other Cephalonia.
Ludwig Ross, the German archaeologist appointed Curator of the Antiquities of Athens at the time of the establishment of the Kingdom of Greece, by his explorations in the Greek islands from 1835 onwards, called attention to certain early intaglios, since known as Inselsteine; but it was not until 1878 that C. T. Newton demonstrated these to be no strayed Phoenician products. In 1866 primitive structures were discovered on the island of Therasia by quarrymen extracting pozzolana, a siliceous volcanic ash, for the Suez Canal works. When this discovery was followed up in 1870, on the neighbouring Santorin (Thera), by representatives of the French School at Athens, much pottery of a class now known immediately to precede the typical late Aegean ware, and many stone and metal objects, were found. These were dated by the geologist Ferdinand A. Fouqué, somewhat arbitrarily, to 2000 B.C., by consideration of the superincumbent eruptive stratum.

In 1993 John Carroll (1916 - 2003) published "Human cognitive abilities: A survey of factor-analytic studies", which outlined his hierarchical, Three-Stratum Theory of cognitive abilities. The theory is based on a factor analytic study of correlation of individual differences variables from measures including psychological tests, school marks, and competence ratings. The factor analysis suggests three layers or strata, with each layer attempting to account for the variation in factor loadings at the next lower level. Thus, the three strata are defined as representing narrow, broad, and general cognitive ability.
Carroll argues that factors are not mere artifacts of a mathematical process. The factors do describe stable and observable differences among individuals in the performance of tasks. The existence of physiological explanations for the differences in ability (e.g., muscle firing rates) does nothing to limit the effectiveness of factors in accounting for behavioral differences.
Carroll proposes a taxonomic dimension in the distinction between level factors and speed factors. The tasks that contribute to the identification or level factors can be sorted by difficulty and individuals differentiated by whether they have acquired the skill to perform the tasks. Tasks that contribute to speed factors are distinguished by the relative speed with which individuals can complete them. Carroll suggests that the distinction between level and speed factors may be the broadest taxonomy of cognitive tasks that can be offered. Carroll distinguishes his hierarchical approach from taxonomic approaches such as Guilford’s Structure of Intellect model (three-dimensional model with contents, operations, and products).

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say you’ve probably had chapped lips at some point.
Here’s what’s happening. Your lips are pretty delicate things – this one at the top is your Labium superius oris, and the one at the bottom is your Labium inferius oris. Collectively they form an enormously sensitive, incredibly flexible part of your body.
However, they also have some vulnerabilities. For instance, the skin of your lips is different from the rest of your face – let’s take a closer look.
Here we go – this is your skin!
The outer layer is called the epidermis, and it has a protective covering called the stratum corneum. Underneath your epidermis is another layer of skin, the dermis.
Like the rest of your skin, your lips have all three of these layers -- the difference is that the stratum corneum on your lips is way thinner than it is anywhere else on your body. In fact, it’s part of the reason people’s lips have that alluring red or pink pigment. It comes from underlying blood vessels -- red-colored, blood-filled capillaries close to the thin skin on your lips.
Next, your lips also don't have the oil and sweat glands that protect other parts of your skin. Their only source of moisture is your saliva, and that's why they can easily become dry and chapped.
And that’s usually the culprit here: hydration. We often experience chapped lips in cold weather – not because our lips are allergic to winter or anything, but instead because the outside air tends to be drier, and this also dries out the lips.
And this drying out is the leading cause of chapped lips, also known as common cheilitis. Luckily, there are some pretty simple ways to prevent this.
First, and no matter what the cause of your chapped lips might be… stop licking them! I know, I know it can be a difficult habit to break. But licking your lips can contribute significantly to dry, cracked skin. The saliva evaporates quickly, taking with it any moisture that was already on your lips and leaving them even drier, especially in winter air.
And speaking of amazing segueways, let’s tackle weather-related chapping. If you have very dry air in your house, consider investing in a humidifier.
If you’re outside, then protect your lips with a product that contains beeswax or petrolatum, which will help maintain your lips' hydration. If you plan to be out in the sun for awhile, help prevent dryness by using a sunscreen on your lips as well. A lip balm with SPF in it could help address both of these issues at once -- and, as always, drinking plenty of fluids is a great move for your entire body, not just your lips.
And that’s it. Well, almost. We didn’t talk about the multiple other causes of chapped lips, or lip balm addiction, or whether some of the ingredients in those things actually cause chapped lips – an interesting little conspiracy theory.

If you plan to be out in the sun for awhile, help prevent dryness by using a sunscreen on your lips as well. A lip balm with SPF in it could help address both of these issues at once -- and, as always, drinking plenty of fluids is a great move for your entire body, not just your lips.
And that’s it. Well, almost. We didn’t talk about the multiple other causes of chapped lips, or lip balm addiction, or whether some of the ingredients in those things actually cause chapped lips – an interesting little conspiracy theory.

Aegean civilization is a general term for the Bronze Age civilizations of Greece around the Aegean Sea. There are three distinct but communicating and interacting geographic regions covered by this term: Crete, the Cyclades and the Greek mainland. Crete is associated with the Minoan civilization from the Early Bronze Age. The Cyclades converge with the mainland during the Early Helladic ("Minyan") period and with Crete in the Middle Minoan period. From ca. 1450 BC (Late Helladic, Late Minoan), the Greek Mycenaean civilization spreads to Crete.
The curtain-wall and towers of the Mycenaean citadel, its gate with heraldic lions, and the great "Treasury of Atreus" had borne silent witness for ages before Heinrich Schliemann's time; but they were supposed only to speak to the Homeric, or, at farthest, a rude Heroic beginning of purely Hellenic civilization. It was not until Schliemann exposed the contents of the graves which lay just inside the gate, that scholars recognized the advanced stage of art which prehistoric dwellers in the Mycenaean citadel had attained.
There had been, however, a good deal of other evidence available before 1876, which, had it been collated and seriously studied, might have discounted the sensation that the discovery of the citadel graves eventually made. Although it was recognized that certain tributaries, represented for example, in the XVIIIth Dynasty tomb of Rekhmara at Egyptian Thebes as bearing vases of peculiar forms, were of some Mediterranean race, neither their precise habitat nor the degree of their civilization could be determined while so few actual prehistoric remains were known in the Mediterranean lands. Nor did the Aegean objects which were lying obscurely in museums in 1870, or thereabouts, provide a sufficient test of the real basis underlying the Hellenic myths of the Argolid, the Troad and Crete, to cause these to be taken seriously. Aegean vases have been exhibited both at Sèvres and Neuchatel since about 1840, the provenance (i.e. source or origin) being in the one case Phylakope in Melos, in the other Cephalonia.
Ludwig Ross, the German archaeologist appointed Curator of the Antiquities of Athens at the time of the establishment of the Kingdom of Greece, by his explorations in the Greek islands from 1835 onwards, called attention to certain early intaglios, since known as Inselsteine; but it was not until 1878 that C. T. Newton demonstrated these to be no strayed Phoenician products. In 1866 primitive structures were discovered on the island of Therasia by quarrymen extracting pozzolana, a siliceous volcanic ash, for the Suez Canal works. When this discovery was followed up in 1870, on the neighbouring Santorin (Thera), by representatives of the French School at Athens, much pottery of a class now known immediately to precede the typical late Aegean ware, and many stone and metal objects, were found. These were dated by the geologist Ferdinand A. Fouqué, somewhat arbitrarily, to 2000 B.C., by consideration of the superincumbent eruptive stratum.

"One of the clearest links between the eugenics movement and U.S. abortion policy is visible in the American Eugenics Society's (AES) 1956 membership records, which includes a Planned Parenthood co-founder, Margaret Sanger, and at least two presidents, William Vogt and Alan Guttmacher.
AES members assisted Hitler in crafting the 1933 German sterilization laws. Unbelievably, in 1956— after WWII—the AES membership list included Dr. Otmar Frieherr Von Verschuer, who had supervised the ongoing "science" experiments of Dr. Josef Mengele at Auschwitz." (There was no "Operation Paperclip"...right?)
Frederick Osborn was put in charge of the Population Council, a group organized and funded by John D. Rockefeller III. In 1956, Osborn addressed the British eugenics society. Osborn affirmed his belief in "Galton's dream" and proposed what he called "voluntary unconscious selection" by changing laws, customs and social expectations.
In 1968, when many people wrongly believed that the eugenics movement had disappeared, Osborn published a book, "The Future of Human Heredity: An Introduction to Eugenics in Modern Society."
Glanville Williams (1911- 1997) was a Eugenics Society Fellow in England.
"Contraception and Eugenics:
We now have a large body of evidence that, since industrialization, the upper stratum of society fails to replace itself, while the population as a whole is increased by excess births among the lower and uneducated classes."
In March 1973, two months after Roe (Roe v. Wade) was handed down, Osborn's American Eugenics Society changed its name to the Society for the Study of Social Biology.
The group had already changed the name of its journal in 1968 from Eugenics Quarterly, to Social Biology.
Commenting on the new title, Osborn remarked:
"The name was changed because it became evident...that tying a eugenic label on them would more often hinder than help their adoption.
Birth control and abortion are turning out to be great eugenic advances of our time. If they had been advanced for eugenic reasons it would have retarded or stopped their acceptance."
