Mark Chang's Persuasive speech What is intelligence? - According to the Myers textbook, Intelligence means: “Mental quality consisting of the ability to learn from experience, solve problems, and use knowledge to adapt to new situations. - Some psychologists claim to say that there is only one general intelligence, where as other psychologists believe that there is a system of intelligence, where topics are separated from one another - A good example of a psychologist who believes in general intelligence is Charles Spearman (1863-1945). He believed that humans have one general intelligence where people have special abilities that are superior from one another. The “general intelligence” is often shortened to G as well. - On the other side, a psychologist named L.L Thurstone (1887-1955) claimed that humans have seven clusters of primary mental abilities, which was mathematically proven by himself. These seven clusters were: WORD FLUENCY, VERBAL COMPREHENSION, SPATIAL ABILITY, PERCEPTUAL SPEED, NUMERICAL ABILITY, INDUCTIVE REASONING, AND MEMORY - Additionally, psychologist Howard Gardner viewed intelligence as abilities that came in in separate packages. Gardner believed that there are 8 sources of intelligence forming the overall intelligence. These Included: LINGUISTIC, LOGICAL MATHEMATICAL, MUSICAL, SPATIAL, BODILY KINESTHETIC, INTRAPERSONAL, INTERPERSONAL, AND NATURALIST. - Last but not least, Psychologist Sternberg introduced the triarchic theory, where “Our intelligence is best classified into three areas that predict real world success: Analytical, creative, and practical” (According to the Myers textbook) a) Analytical Intelligence is considered using the traditional intelligence test such as problem solving, whereas Practical intelligence is required for everyday tasks that has multiple solutions. Lastly, the creative intelligence is demonstrated by “reacting adaptively to novel situations and generating novel ideas” According to the Myers textbook. - As there is intelligence that consists of clusters, John Mayer, Peter Salovey, and David Caruso introduced Emotional intelligence, where it consisted of perceiving, understanding, managing, and using emotions. a) Perceiving emotions helps us recognize faces, music, and stories b) Understanding emotions help us predict how subjects will change and blend c) Managing emotions help us express differently in various situations d) Last but not least, using emotions “help us enable adaptive or creative thinking.” According to the Myers textbook. - There are many types of Intelligence systems that Psychologists came up with. However it is your choice to decide what you believe in. - In my opinion, I debate that intelligence has to consist of experience that we can learn from, and how experiences may effect our emotions as well. There is no specific “term” of intelligence that I truly believe in as well.
