The Turkish prime minister, Mr. Erdogan, stormed out of a heated debate at the World Economic Forum in Davos after slamming the position of Israeli President, Mr. Shimon Peres, over Israel's offensive in the Gaza Strip.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan walked out of the televised debate on Thursday, after the moderator refused to allow him to rebut the Israeli president's justification about the war that left about 1,300 Gazans dead.
Before storming out, Erdogan told Shimon Peres, the Israeli president: "You are killing people."
Peres told Erdogan during the heated panel discussion that he would have acted in the same manner if rockets had been falling on Istanbul.
Moderator David Ignatius, a Washington Post columnist, then told Erdogan that he had "only a minute" to respond to a lengthy monologe by Pires.
Erdogan said: "I find it very sad that people applaud what you said. There have been many people killed. And I think that it is very wrong and it is not humanitarian."
Ignatius twice attempted to finish the debate, saying, "We really do need to get people to dinner."
Erdogan then said: "Thank you very much. Thank you very much. Thank you very much. I don't think I will come back to Davos after this."

"For many Turkish voters, including some longstanding supporters of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, enough was enough.
Mr. Erdogan followed a familiar script throughout the election campaign, using the language of Islam to whip up support among his religious base and denouncing critical voices as enemies of the state. His most ardent supporters lauded him as a figure almost as consequential as the Prophet Muhammad himself, deepening many Turks’ sense that a personality cult had enveloped their president.
“He thought previous formulas he had used — painting the opposition as terrorists, traitors and infidels, and throwing in Israel and the interest lobby and the big bad West — would work,” said Asli Aydintasbas, a Turkish columnist and analyst for CNN Turk. “But people had heard of this for a long time, and they were tired.”
Now Turkish voters have spoken. Mr. Erdogan’s Islamist Justice and Development Party (known by its Turkish initials, A.K.P.) has lost its majority in Parliament, and his iron grip on Turkish politics has loosened, even though he himself was not on the ballot."

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
Turkey declares protecting al-Aqsa its mission
Turkish leaders have said protecting Islamic sites in the Holy Land is a sacred mission for them, with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan bluntly warning any attack against the 8th-century al-Aqsa Mosque is no different than an attack on the Kaaba in the holy city of Mecca.
“The Israeli administration has to stop this despicableness, this barbarity; what would it say if this kind of attack had been launched against synagogues? The Masjid al-Aqsa is not only a shrine for Palestinians, but is the shrine of all Muslims,” Erdoğan was quoted as saying on Nov. 7 during an official visit to the Turkmen capital, Ashgabat.
“This action, this attempt launched against the Masjid al-Aqsa can never be forgiven. Attacking the Masjid al-Aqsa is like attacking the Kabaa,” Erdoğan added.
The president had already urged the international community to take “all required steps” on the issue, while arguing that, otherwise, Israeli provocations might revive intifada movements, with various troubles spreading into different parts of the world, as tension would not remain limited to Palestine, Jerusalem or the region.
As Palestinian protesters fought with Israeli security forces in East Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank on Nov. 7, the latest clashes in a fortnight of violence over access to Jerusalem’s holiest site, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu also made a point of the significance attached to resolving of the issue by his government.
“Al-Quds [Jerusalem] has been entrusted with us by [Muslim caliph] Hazrat Omar. Al-Quds has been entrusted to us by [Ottoman Sultan] Yavuz Sultan Selim and [Ottoman Sultan] Süleyman the Magnificent. Al-Quds has been entrusted to us by the last soldier of the Ottomans,” Davutoğlu said passionately on Nov. 7.
“Al-Quds is our cause even if everybody else forgets and it will continue being our cause for eternity. Nobody can turn to a Turk and say ‘al-Quds is not your cause,’” Davutoğlu added, as he was delivering a speech during a collective opening ceremony for some 21 facilities in the northwestern Anatolian province of Bursa.
Recalling that he called both Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas political chief Khaled Mashaal earlier in the day, Davutoğlu pledged to do whatever it takes for al-Quds and the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
“We have given the required orders; we will launch initiatives everywhere, the U.N. being the first place in the world for supporting al-Quds,” Davutoğlu said.
Erdoğan also said Nov. 6 that Turkey would raise the issue with members of the U.N. Security Council, as he underlined the importance of stopping violations at the al-Aqsa compound for maintaining regional peace.
The Israeli aggression was protested at four corners of the country, as Friday prayers also provided an opportunity for people to gather.
The Humanitarian Aid Foundation (İHH), the charity that organized the Mavi Marmara ship to Gaza to break the embargo in 2010, called on people to protest the incursion of Israeli soldiers and extremist Jews into the mosque.
Pro-Palestinian activists chanted slogans and raised flags following Friday prayers in Istanbul as part of nationwide protests. Around 1,000 protesters gathered in the yard of Istanbul’s Fatih Mosque, condemning what they called “Zionist aggression on the holy temple.”
In Ankara, protesters gathered outside the Israeli Embassy and threw stones at the building. Riot police fired tear gas to disperse the protestors.

Russia has warned that Turkey’s downing of its fighter jet on the border with Syria will have serious consequences for ties between Moscow and Ankara.
President Vladimir Putin said the move was a stab in the back delivered by terrorist accomplices. The Russian president stressed that the plane was downed above Syrian territory with an air-to-air missile fired by a Turkish plane although it did not pose a threat to Turkey. He also said large amounts of oil from anti-Damascus militants in Syria go to Turkey. The Russian Defense Ministry has summoned Turkish defense attaché in Moscow. Meanwhile, Turkey’s Foreign Ministry has also summoned Russia’s charge d’affaires. Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu says Ankara has the right to all kinds of measures against border violations. NATO ambassadors will hold a special session later on Tuesday to discuss the situation.

#Turkey shot down a #Russian #warplane near the #Syrian border on Tuesday, saying the jet had #violated its air space, in one of the most serious publicly acknowledged clashes between a #NATO member country and Russia for half a century.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said the plane had been attacked when it was 1 km (0.62 mile) inside Syria and warned of "serious consequences" for what he termed a stab in the back administered by "the accomplices of terrorists".
"We will never tolerate such crimes like the one committed today," Putin said, as Russian and Turkish shares fell on fears of an escalation between the former Cold War enemies.
In a letter to the U.N. Security Council, Turkey said it had shot down the jet while in Turkish air space. Along with a second plane, the aircraft had flown more than a mile into Turkey for 17 seconds, despite being warned 10 times in five minutes while approaching to change direction, the letter said.
"Nobody should doubt that we made our best efforts to avoid this latest incident. But everyone should respect the right of Turkey to defend its borders," Turkish President Tayyip #Erdogan said in a speech in Ankara.
In condemnation of Russian air strikes in Syria, during which Turkish air space has been violated several times in recent weeks, Erdogan said that only Turkey's "cool-headedness" had prevented worse incidents in the past.
Each country summoned a diplomatic representative of the other. Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov canceled a visit to Turkey due on Wednesday and the defense ministry said it was preparing measures to respond to such incidents.
U.S. President Barack Obama and French President Francois Hollande, meeting in Washington, urged against an escalation, while NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said the military alliance stood in solidarity with Turkey.
Footage from private Turkish broadcaster Haberturk TV showed the warplane going down in flames, a long plume of smoke trailing behind it as it crashed in a wooded part of an area the TV said was known by Turks as "Turkmen Mountain".
Separate footage from Turkey's Anadolu Agency showed two pilots parachuting out of the jet before it crashed.
A deputy commander of rebel Turkmen forces in Syria said his men shot both pilots dead as they came down. The Russian military confirmed one pilot had been shot dead from the ground and another soldier died during a rescue operation.
A senior Turkish official said at least one of the pilots could still be alive. "It's not a fact but a possibility. We're trying to verify the information and taking all necessary steps to facilitate their return," the official said.
A video sent to Reuters earlier appeared to show one of the pilots immobile and badly wounded on the ground.
"MORAL CRUSADE"
Russia's defense ministry said one of its Su-24 fighter jets had been downed in Syria and that "for the entire duration of the flight, the aircraft was exclusively over Syrian territory", a suggestion Turkey denied.
"The data we have is very clear. There were two planes approaching our border, we warned them as they were getting too close," another senior Turkish official told Reuters. "Our findings show clearly that Turkish air space was violated multiple times. And they violated it knowingly."
A U.S. military spokesman said it was an issue between the Turkish and Russian governments and that U.S.-led coalition operations in Syria and Iraq were continuing "as planned".
Moscow's decision to launch separate air strikes in Syria means Russian and NATO planes have been flying combat missions in the same air space for the first time since World War Two, targeting various insurgent groups close to Turkish borders.

The Turkish president has unveiled his new presidential palace on Wednesday amidst huge controversy.
Opposition politicians have mocked the extravagance of the palace - which has 1,000 rooms and is understood to have cost more than 270 million euros - and say it is evidence of the president's autocratic tendencies.
Environmentalists are angry that the complex has been built on one of the city's best preserved green spaces and that hundreds of trees were cut down.

The Turkish military has released an audio recording of what it says were warnings to a Russian warplane before it was shot down on the Syrian border.
"Change your heading south immediately," a voice is heard saying in English. Turkey said it had tried to rescue the SU-24 bomber's two pilots.
One of them was killed by gunfire as he parachuted from the burning plane.
The other pilot was rescued. He denied claims the jet had violated Turkish airspace and warnings had been given.
The plane crashed into a mountainside on Syrian soil after being hit by a missile from a Turkish F-16 fighter jet on Tuesday.
Tensions have escalated between the two countries over the incident, with Russian President Vladimir Putin describing it as a "stab in the back" and warning of "serious consequences".
Moscow later broke off military contacts with Ankara and said it would deploy its most advanced anti-aircraft missile system in Syria to destroy any target that may threaten its warplanes.
It also said fighter jets would now escort its bombers during air strikes over Syria.
The US, the EU and the UN have all appealed for calm.

The Turkish military said it had given 10 warnings to the Russian plane before it was shot down in Turkish airspace.
On Wednesday, it also put out a statement saying it had been in touch with Russian military attaches to explain the rules of engagement that led to the incident and that it had tried to rescue the pilots.
Turkey said it was ready for "all kinds of co-operation" with Moscow over the incident.

Meanwhile, the surviving Russian pilot said on Wednesday no warning had been given by Turkey.
Capt Konstantin Murakhtin also stressed there was "no way" the jet could have violated Turkish airspace, as Ankara said it did.
He knew the region "very well", he said, and the jet had not been in Turkish airspace "even for a second".
Russia said the pilot was rescued from rebel-held territory in north-eastern Syria in a 12-hour operation involving Russian and Syrian special forces.
A Russian marine was killed and a helicopter destroyed by rebels during the operation.

Capt Murakhtin was speaking from the Hmeymim airbase, where Russia's aircraft are based.
Russia has been carrying out air strikes against opponents of President Bashar al-Assad since late September.
Meanwhile, Syrian rebels released a video apparently showing the dead body of the second pilot, who was identified by Russia as Lt Col Oleg Peshkov.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has defended the action by the country's military, saying "everyone must respect the right of Turkey to protect its borders".
He said he did not want to escalate tensions further.
Turkey is a member of Nato. The alliance has backed Turkey's version of events, although it, too, is calling for "diplomacy and de-escalation" to resolve the situation.
Russia and Turkey have found themselves on opposing sides in Syria's conflict, with Russia supporting President Assad, while Turkey is a staunch critic.

NATO’s secretary general has accused Russia of deliberately violating Turkish airspace while bombing ISIL positions in Syria.
Turkey says Russian fighter jets violated its airspace two times. Moscow confirms one overflight of the Turkish territory, saying it was accidental and due to bad weather. But it has not commented on the second alleged violation of the Turkish airspace. Turkish president has said his country will not remain silent over the issue. Rejeb Tayyib Erdogan added that quote-losing Turkey’s friendship could cost Russia dearly. He made the remarks in Brussels where NATO ambassadors are meeting to discuss Russia’s air campaign against Daesh terrorists in Syria.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed no remorse over the downing of the Su-24 aircraft of the Russian Air Force, while speaking in front of Turkish officials in Ankara, Thursday.
SOT, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of Turkey (in Turkish): "It is out of question for Turkey to have direct military intervention against Russia or any other country. We expect everyone to pay regards to our rights to sovereignty and to respect these rights. We don't find expansion of an incident to affect our political and economic relations right while the whole world finds us right. If the same violation was made today, Turkey would respond in a similar manner."
SOT, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of Turkey (in Turkish): "It's the country that carried out the violation which should question itself and take measures to prevent it from happening again, not the country that was subjected to a violation."

Brian Lilley of TheRebel.Media reports, President Obama's first public statement addressing the Paris terror attacks included him noting that the attacks weren't just against Paris or France but against all of humanity and the universal values we all share.
That statement bothered me because I wondered, do we really all share the same values?
I don't think so and that point was driven home this week at a soccer match between Turkey and Greece. See for yourself what the Turkish fans did during what was supposed to be a moment of silence for the victims of the Paris terror attacks.
Some don't share our values and it's our values that they are trying to attack.

On November 1, 2015, the Republic of Turkey held elections for its Parliament. To the surprise of many pollsters, President Recep Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party (AKP), an Islamist, anti-Semitic, and anti-Western party, won back the majority it had lost in June. However, many experts are suspicious of these results, and believe they may be tainted by corruption. Unfortunately, the AKP’s victory is likely to make it easier for Erdogan to establish a strong Presidential system in that country, which may eventually verge into a dictatorship, and also give him more power to interfere in next door Syria, where he has been a determined foe of President Assad, but also of the pro-US Kurdish groups, and a (sometimes) ally of ISIS and other Islamist groups.

Webster Tarpley is an American historian, economist, journalist, lecturer and a critic of U.S. foreign and domestic policy.
He received a BA degree summa cum laude in English and Italian from Princeton University in 1966. While a student at Princeton he became a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and was a Fulbright Scholar at University of Turin in Italy. Tarpley also obtained a MA degree in humanities from Skidmore College, as well as a PhD from the Catholic University of America in History.
As a European based journalist in the 1980s, Tarpley wrote a study on the assassination of Prime Minister Aldo Moro. The study claimed that the murder was a false flag operation orchestrated by Propaganda Due (a Masonic Lodge) with the cooperation of senior members of the Italian government secret services that was blamed on the Red Brigades.
As an activist historian he first became widely known for his book George Bush: The Unauthorized Biography (1992), a masterpiece of research which is still a must read.
During 2008, he warned of the dangers of an Obama presidency controlled by Wall Street with Obama: The Postmodern Coup, The Making of a Manchurian Candidate and Barack H. Obama: The Unauthorized Biography. His interest in economics is reflected in Surviving the Cataclysm: Your Guide Through the Worst Financial Crisis in Human History Against Oligarchy. He is currently completing a study of Pearl Harbor as an episode in Wall Street's war against President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the New Deal, and FDR's economic bill of rights. His books have appeared in Japanese, German, Italian, French, and Spanish

When Turks go to the polls on June 7, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan hopes his Justice and Development Party - the AKP - will secure enough seats in parliament to change Turkey's constitution.
During the campaign, Erdogan and his Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu have been fixated on the media - accusations, arrests, reporting bans and court convictions against journalists.
Last week, Erdogan publicly accused the editor of the Cumhuriyet newspaper of espionage and slammed the New York Times for holding a grudge against him and Turkey itself.
The election will have great influence on the future of Turkish journalism, at least in the short term.
Talking us through the story are: Bulent Kenes, the editor-in-chief of Today's Zaman; Can Dundar, the editor-in-chief of Cumhuriyet; Mehmet Karaca, the Ankara editor-in-chief of ATV; and Besir Atalay, the deputy chair and spokesman for the AKP.
In the second half of the show, Richard Gizbert sits down with Daniel Ellsberg, the first whistleblower prosecuted in US history.
In 1971, Ellsberg gave the so-called Pentagon Papers to the New York Times, the Washington Post and 17 other newspapers. He has re-emerged as an advocate for those who want the truth to get out like Edward Snowden and Chelsea Manning.

While Kurdish forces in Kobani desperately defend the Syrian town against the advances of the militant group called Islamic State (IS), Turkey's military is not yet getting involved. Instead, Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan seems to prefer to watch as the IS conflict weakens the Kurds. His inaction is also troubling his NATO partners. Are the Kurds the pawns in a power game involving Turkey, NATO and the US-led anti-IS coalition? And how reliable a NATO partner is Turkey?
Our guests:
Günter Seufert, German Institute for International and Security Affairs in Berlin
Daniel Gerlach is the founder and editor-in-chief of Zenith, a German magazine focusing on politics, economics and culture in the Middle East.
Bilgin Ayata is an assistant professor of international relations at Berlin’s Free University.
