'The people are never wrong' Harper says in concession speech
Justin Trudeau, Canada's Liberal Party end Prime Minister Stephen Harper's rule. Canadians voted for a sweeping change in government Monday, giving Liberal Party leader Justin Trudeau a majority to end the nearly 10-year rule of Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
Election returns showed Trudeau's Liberals winning a majority of the 338 seats in Parliament.
Trudeau, 43, the oldest son of the late prime minister Pierre, will become the second youngest prime minister in Canadian history.
“There’s no question that people in this country ... wanted real change,” said Newfoundland Liberal candidate Seamus O’Regan, who ousted the incumbent in his district by a wide margin. The Liberals’ success in Atlantic Canada, he told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. (CBC), was a result of running “a campaign of optimism.”
Voters in Canada had a choice to hand Harper, 56, and his Conservative Party a rare fourth term, or turn left under Trudeau. Pre-election polls gave an edge to Trudeau.
The campaign lasted 11 weeks and was the country's longest and most expensive in more than 140 years.
Trudeau had promised to cut taxes for the middle class, raise taxes on the wealthiest 1% and boost government deficits to stimulate Canada's sluggish economy.
"We have a chance to bring real change to Canada and bring an end to the Harper decade," Trudeau said earlier Monday in Harper's adopted home province of Alberta, traditionally a Conservative stronghold, according to the Associated Press.
Trudeau is a former schoolteacher and member of Parliament since 2008. He and his wife, the former model and television host Sophie Gregoire, have three young children.
Trudeau has proposed improving relations between Canada and the United States. Harper's strong stance in favor of the Keystone XL pipeline that would carry crude from Alberta to Texas has clashed with President Obama's reluctance about the project.
Trudeau supports the pipeline but says relations between the two major trading partners should not hinge on one project.
Harper also clashed with Obama on other issues, including the historic nuclear agreement that the United States and other world powers recently reached with Iran. He has been hawkish on defense, but has been hurt politically by a weak economy this year. Harper tweeted earlier Monday, "Today, I'm asking you to vote Conservative to protect Canadian jobs and our economy," the AP reported.
Harper has nudged the traditionally center-left country to the right, lowering sales and corporate taxes, avoiding climate change legislation and supporting the oil industry against environmentalists. He campaigned on a promise of ensuring "stability, not risk" and cast Trudeau as "just not ready" for higher office. But Trudeau's performances in five debates received strong reviews and a surge in pre-election polls.
Trudeau's iconic father was elected prime minister in 1968 and held the office almost continuously until 1984. The charismatic politician, who was a bachelor when he became prime minister, often drew comparisons to John F. Kennedy. At age 51, he married 22-year-old Margaret Sinclair, who earned notoriety as first lady for partying with the Rolling Stones and at New York's Studio 54, the AP reported. The couple had three sons but divorced when Justin was 6. The boys were raised by their father, who died in 2000.
Canadian election rules allow candidates to win parliamentary districts with a plurality of the vote rather than an outright majority. That makes it possible for a party to win a majority of seats with less than a majority of the national vote.

John Oliver and Mike Myers Blast Canada’s PM Stephen Harper: ‘Do Not Vote For Stephen Harper

The host of HBO’s ‘Last Week Tonight’ had Canadian actor Mike Myers join him to convince Canadians NOT to vote for the incumbent prime minister.
For those of us whose ears are still ringing from Donald Trump and/or Bernie Sanders’s bellowing, Canada, our fair neighbor to the north, is about to have its Election Day. Unlike America, where campaigning lasts over a year and 158 filthy rich families have made up half of the 2016 presidential election’s funding, Canadian politicians make their cases over a frenzied 78 days.
And boy, it’s been a doozy—so sayeth John Oliver, the gleefully uninhibited host of HBO’s Last Week Tonight.
On the local side, conservative candidate for Canadian Parliament Jerry Bance was forced to resign after it was revealed that he was caught peeing in a client’s mug via hidden camera during a 2012 exposé on the home repair industry. If that weren’t enough, New Democratic Party candidate Alex Johnson has taken heat for a 2008 Facebook post on an electrified fencepost at Auschwitz that said it “looked phallic.” When pressed about the post, Johnson claimed to have no idea what Auschwitz was until now. Oh, and Johnson is the vice chair of the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board. She helps run a school district. Yikes.
But on Sunday night, Oliver reserved the lion’s share of his ire for incumbent Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who, thanks to Canada’s lack of term limits, has already been in office for nearly a decade. The conservative robot-politician has come under fire for, well, everything.
“Don’t be deceived by his bland exterior. Where there is banality, there is evil,” said Oliver. “For instance, Harper’s government has passed numerous laws weakening environmental protections, they’ve scaled back health care for some refugees—which a federal court called ‘cruel and unusual treatment’—and Harper himself has taken an extremely strong position on marijuana.”
Then Oliver threw to a clip of Harper claiming there was “overwhelming and growing scientific evidence” that marijuana “is infinitely worse” than tobacco.
“Are you high?” asked Oliver. “Marijuana is not worse than tobacco!”
The prime minister’s hard-line (and boneheaded) stance on marijuana, however, pales in comparison to his “pandering to Islamophobes,” as Oliver put it.
“Earlier this year, his government passed a law called the ‘Zero Tolerance for Barbaric Cultural Practices Act,’ stiffening penalties for things like honor killing and polygamy, despite the fact that both those things were already illegal in Canada,” said Oliver. “And then a few weeks ago, they suggested a ‘barbaric cultural practices hotline’ despite the fact that 911 continues to exist in Canada. And this is on top of the fact that they once banned women from wearing the niqab while taking the oath of citizenship.”
Not convinced? Harper is also in a godawful band, the Van Cats. Here’s a video of them laying waste to Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline”:

Canadian voters have unseated right-wing Prime Minister Stephen Harper after nearly a decade in office. In a surprise result following the closest election campaign in recent history, the centrist Liberals jumped from third place to a parliamentary majority. Liberal leader Justin Trudeau will become Canada’s next prime minister. Harper’s loss ends a tenure that saw him take three elections despite his Conservative Party never winning more than 40 percent of the vote. For a hostile stance on the environment and other signature right-wing policies, a recent headline in The Guardian called him "the last remnant of George W Bush in North America." Monday’s result is also a major loss for the traditionally leftist New Democratic Party, which fell from holding Official Opposition status to third place. The NDP led the polls in August but lost momentum as its leadership drifted toward the middle. Trudeau has pledged to reverse some of Harper’s key policies while backing others, including the C-51 surveillance law — known as "Canada’s Patriot Act" — and the Keystone XL pipeline. We discuss the Canadian elections with two guests: indigenous attorney and law professor Pamela Palmater, and Judy Rebick, founder of Rabble.ca, one of Canada’s leading independent news websites.

Ottawa, Canada - Prime Minister Stephen Harper says he is prepared to suffer any political backlash that comes his way for speaking out against anti-Israel rhetoric.
Harper told an audience Monday that while Israel is receptive to fair criticism, Canada is obligated to stand up for its ally when it comes under attack from others.
"Not just because it is the right thing to do, but because history shows us, and the ideology of the anti-Israel mob tell us all too well, that those who threaten the existence of the Jewish people are in the longer term a threat to all of us."
The prime minister acknowledged that his position is not popular with all governments and organizations, including members of the United Nations and the Francophonie.
"And I know, by the way, because I have the bruises to show for it, that whether it is at the United Nations or any other international forum, the easiest thing to do is simply to just get along and go along with this anti-Israel rhetoric, to pretend it is just about being even-handed, and to excuse oneself with the label of honest broker.
"There are, after all, a lot more votes—a lot more—in being anti-Israeli than in taking a stand. But as long as I am prime minister, whether it is at the United Nations, the Francophonie or anywhere else, Canada will take that stand, whatever the cost."
The prime minister's use of the phrase "honest broker" is an apparent reference to a recent speech made by Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff.
Ignatieff criticized the Harper government for using Israel as a wedge issue with his political opponents in Canada, at the expense of the country's influence on peace in the Middle East. The Liberal leader called for a return to a time when Canada was perceived to be an honest broker in the global community.
Harper made his remarks at the start of a two-day conference on anti-Semitism that is being held on Parliament Hill during Holocaust Education Week.

Canada federal election 2015: Stephen Harper's 'niqab' vs Justin Trudeau vs Tom Mulcair- TomoNews

OTTAWA — It's a three-way race for who will get to form Canada's next federal government. Conservative leader Stephen Harper is aiming for his fourth straight term as prime minister. Gunning from the left for the top spot are Justin Trudeau, leader of the Liberal Party, and Tom Mulcair, head of the New Democratic Party.
Over the past 11 years, Harper has shown favor to oil companies. He is even suspected of putting gag orders on scientists who preach the red pill of global warming. The top candidates are all in favor of laying pipe of some kind, but Harper is swinging big for the controversial Northern Gateway Pipeline.
But honestly, the Canadian election isn't about climate change. And it isn't about delivering clean tap water to the First Nation communities, either. Nor will it matter which candidate will legalize weed, fix the economy or stand up for LGBTQ rights.
This election is about weapons of mass distraction — the niqab — brought to you by the Stephen Harper and the "Wizard of Oz" Lynton Crosby, who happened to quit Harper's campaign just four days before the election. Trudeau is currently leading in the polls, but this election will likely come down to the wire.

So Toronto’s main airport is named after a Liberal prime minister, Lester Pearson. And Montreal’s main airport is named a liberal Prime minister, Pierre Elliot Trudeau.
So what’s Calgary’s airport called? It’s the third busiest in Canada.
Well, it doesn’t have a name. It’s called the Calgary International Airport, or YYC, its call letters.
I have an idea. Why don’t we call it the Stephen Harper International Airport?
He’s been a major figure in Calgary for more than 20 years. First elected as an MP in 1993. United the right; beat the Liberals three times. Helped change the country. Not everyone in Canada loves him. Not everyone loved Pearson or Trudeau either, but in their home towns, it was enough to name their airport.
I say we start a petition. Click here, or visit www. Harper Airport dot ca. We’ll collect the petition and take it to the Calgary Airport Authority, and the incoming Transport Minister. Let’s get thousands of signatures.
Harper not about the money or the selfies. He probably is against this initiative — he’s no media-hound like Justin Trudeau. But for the rest of us, I think it’s a fitting tribute. Every time we fly in or out of Calgary, the most entrepreneurial city in Canada, we’ll be reminded that for nine years it helped set the tone for the country, it spread Calgary values like hard work and personal responsibility and humility across Canada. I think it’s a great idea.
Join me — by clicking here, or visiting Harper Airport dot ca and let’s do this one thing for the man who did so much for Canada.

When you want the inside goods, go to a researcher that knows enough to have written a book. And books. Yves Engler recently released The Ugly Canadian: Stephen Harper's Foreign Policy and has another new book out soon. That's nine thus far on the topics of governmental mismanagement starting with idiocy, right on up to war criminality. So he's barely getting started.
Yves' scope is wide ranging and borne out of a desire for a well-studied look at Canada's foreign policy. Such as the massive trade mistake to supply 15 billion dollars of Light Armoured Vehicles (LAV's), from a military industrialist. We paid no attention to him, but President Eisenhower warned us about these clowns.
General Dynamics will deliver to a middle east pseudo-military force that thoroughly enjoys severing human heads. Yes, I said 'enjoy' and no, it's not ISIS. It's Canada's- foreign policy friends- the friggin' Saudi kingdom. And when I say 'Canada's' policy, I mean that of Stephen Harper, seen here, idea-planning with key cabinet members. You should know the Saudis hate being talked about as savage beheaders- so tell everyone, including your Canadian MP, before the next election.
