English/Nat
Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak has warned that there could be an upsurge in international terrorism if the problems of the Middle East are not tackled soon.
In an exclusive interview with APTV, President Mubarak said that the Palestinian people had to see the fruits of the peace process in material improvements in their daily lives.
If international aid was not forthcoming young Palestinians would soon turn to violence in order to voice their grievances.
TRANSCRIPTION OF SOUNDBITES:
SOUNDBITE: 0:30"
So many countries thought as far as they signed the peace
agreement or they signed the declaration of principles that
this was the end of the agreement. No! this is the beginning. We
have to work hard for the implementation, for raising the standard
of the people. Otherwise the people will be hopeless and they will
be turned over to the terrorist groups, and this will be a big
mistake.
SUPER CAPTION: Hosni Mubarak, President of Egypt
SOUNDBITE: 0:35"
If the donors did not help, which is all in all two point two
billion dollars...which is nonsense when you compare it to the
money being spent on the wars and explosions here and there. I think
my fear is that this part...the West Bank and Gaza may turn over to
be another complicated Afghanistan; and terrorism will be tougher
there and not a single country will escape that.
SUPER CAPTION: Hosni Mubarak, President of Egypt
President Mubarak also warns against complacency towards Iraq. He personally does not trust Saddam Hussein and the recent recognition of Kuwaiti's border by the Iraqi regime.
SOUNDBITE:
01:00"
I don't trust him because he did not tell me anything about what happened in Kuwait. He didn't tell me his intentions although we were in one organisation and he gave me a promise that he is not going to use force against (Kuwait) when there were concentrations at the border. One day before the occupation I met him. Hours. Tête-à- tête. We had long discussions and he promised me that these forces were being exchanged normally, a routine exchange, that he has no intentions of doing anything there, until we reached the conclusion that he should sit with the Kuwaitis to negotiate the problem. And the first meeting took place in Jedda and the night they finished the meeting the invasion started.
SUPER CAPTION: Hosni Mubarak, President of Egypt
SOUNDBITE:
0:20"
Recognised on the paper but is that true recognising, practically? That's the point. That's why I tell that there is mistrust between Iraqis and the Gulf countries.

of the people. Otherwise the people will be hopeless and they will
be turned over to the terrorist groups, and this will be a big
mistake.

SOUNDBITE:

Recognised on the paper but is that true recognising, practically? That's the point. That's why I tell that there is mistrust between Iraqis and the Gulf countries.

The former Egyptian President, Hosni Mubarak, has appeared in court, three days after being released from prison and placed under house arrest. Mubarak, who ruled the country for 30 years, is facing a retrial on charges of complicity in the killing of protesters during the revolt against him in 2011.
The 85 year-old appeared in a courtroom cage in a wheelchair, wearing sunglasses and dressed in white, along with his two sons, former interior minister, and six security chiefs.
Mubarak was sentenced to life in prison last year for the same charge of complicity in the killing of protesters, but an appeals court overturned the sentence and ordered a retrial. Report by Sarah Johnston.

Egypt: Hosni Mubarak Cleared Of Charges

Egypt: Ex-ruler Hosni Mubarak, accused in deaths of hundreds, cleared of charges (CNN, Nov 29, 2014)
http://edition.cnn.com/2014/11/29/world/meast/egypt-mubarak-trial/index.html
"Egypt's former longtime ruler Hosni Mubarak was cleared of charges in a retrial Saturday and could soon be released -- a stunning reversal for a man who faced life imprisonment or worse after a revolution toppled him in 2011.
A Cairo judge dismissed charges linking Mubarak to the deaths of hundreds of protesters during the 2011 revolt and found him not guilty of corruption.
Mubarak, who ruled Egypt as president for 29 years, was stoic as his supporters in the courtroom cheered the decision that capped a months-long retrial. The 86-year-old, reclining on a hospital gurney in a defendants' cage, nodded while fellow defendants kissed him on the head.
Later, he told the country's Sada ElBalad TV station in a brief phone interview that he "didn't commit anything."
"I laughed when I heard the first verdict," he said of the first trial. "When it came to the second verdict, I said I was waiting. It would go either way. It wouldn't have made a difference to me either way."
Mubarak was convicted in 2012 of issuing orders to kill peaceful protesters during the country's 2011 uprising and was sentenced to life in prison. He appealed and was granted a new trial last year.
Also acquitted Saturday were Mubarak's former Interior Minister Habib el-Adly and six of el-Adly's aides, who'd been accused of being connected to the deaths of 239 protesters as security forces cracked down on them in 2011. Mubarak's two sons also were acquitted Saturday of corruption.
Mubarak still has a three-year sentence for a previous conviction for embezzlement, but it wasn't immediately clear how much time he's already been credited with, and therefore when he will be free.
CNN's efforts to reach Mubarak's lawyer Farid El-Deeb for comment weren't immediately successful...."

French/Arabic
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak says Mideast peace must come "now or never" and that Israel needs to show willingness to make concessions.
In an interview with French newspaper, Le Figaro, Mubarak said that Israel needs to be willing to bend.
Mubarak's remarks came as he met French President Jacques Chirac in Paris on Friday to discuss the Middle East peace process.
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was in Paris on Friday to meet French President, Jacques Chirac.
France, which now holds the rotating European Union presidency, has long sought to increase its influence in the Middle East.
After the U-S-brokered Camp David summit between Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak collapsed over their rival claims to Jerusalem, Mubarak has become a key mediator.
Mubarak told French newspaper, Le Figaro, that Arafat would never succumb to pressure to make concessions on Islamic holy sites in Jerusalem.
He also said that Mideast peace must come "now or never" and that Israel needs to show willingness to make concessions.
After their meeting, Chirac said that he and Mubarak were of the same mind when it came to the Middle East.
SOUNDBITE: (French)
"President Mubarak has underlined his corner and it's the same as mine - to help to restore peace. Both of us are men of peace and both of us long for the establishment of a lasting peace in the region. This would also allow development and security to follow, with each respecting the rights of the other. We're looking for a situation where rapprochement between the Palestinians and the Israelis is possible."
SUPER CAPTION: Jacques Chirac, French President
SOUNDBITE: (Arabic)
"There is talk about dividing Jerusalem into four sections. There are lots of ideas from so-called political experts close to the Egyptians and the Palestinians, but all this does not have foundation. The truth is clear. We don't want division. We cannot accept a division that the Palestinians don't want. First of all, we are helping both parties. We are helping the Israelis as well so that the distance between the two parties can be narrowed and so that the two can reach an agreement that's satisfactory to both parties."
SUPER CAPTION: Hosni Mubarak, Egyptian President
Leaders involved in the peace process have been making whirlwind diplomatic visits ahead of September 13 - the date on which Arafat has said he could unilaterally declare a Palestinian state.
Mubarak said Egypt would recognise a Palestinian state "the day it is declared."
But he said that Arafat has been counselled relentlessly to seek an agreement and avoid making a unilateral announcement.
