Inside Story - Is Israel maintaining the status quo at Al-Aqsa Mosque?
Israeli government leaders have repeatedly said they do not want changes at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.
But the government is also accused of funding groups advocating major changes to who can pray at the sacred and sensitive site in Jerusalem.
That is provoking more tension with security forces violently cracking down on Palestinian worshippers.
It is also causing discontent in the occupied territories where Palestinians are unhappy with Israel's action and their own leadership.
So, is all this a recipe for more turmoil?

Palestinians have taken to the streets of Jerusalem al-Quds to condemn Israel’s latest assault on the al-Aqsa Mosque.
The attack has also sparked international condemnation. Jordan has accused Israel of provocation and attempts to change the status quo. Under the current situation, Jews are permitted to visit the mosque but can't pray there. Meanwhile Egypt has condemned the assault as an unacceptable escalation against Muslims' holy places in the occupied territories. Jordan and Egypt are the only two Muslim countries which officially recognize Israel as a state. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has also slammed the attack. Fierce clashe

The Al Aqsa Mosque makes a terrible danger - Jerusalem
Masjid Al Aqsa is the name of the whole area enclosed by the 4 walls surrounding the two Masajid of Masjid-e-Qibly and Qubbat-As-Sakhrah (Dome of the Rock).
Both Masajid are in the compound of Masjid Al Aqsa which is the size of 13 football pitches (35 acres). Masjid-e-Qibly is the Masjid where the 5 daily Salaah is led.
In the compound there are 200 #monuments including Masjid-e-Qibly and #Qubbat-As-Sakhrah (#Dome of the #Rock), other prayer halls, schools, fountains and libraries.
The reward of praying anywhere in the compound of Masjid Al Aqsa is increased 500 times more than any (Masjid) elsewhere.
Abu Darda (ra) relates that the Prophet (Peace be upon him) said, "A prayer in Makkah (Ka'bah) is worth 100,000 times (reward), a prayer in my Masjid (Madinah) is worth 1,000 times and a prayer in Al-Aqsa Sanctuary is worth 500 times more reward than anywhere else".
For Muslims, it holds a very important place in our heart. It is the 3rd most holy site in Islam. It is the location that the Prophetṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) was transported to during the journey of Israa and Miraaj. It was the scene for the most extraordinary gathering in the history of mankind – when every Prophet that ever lived were gathered together for a congregational prayer behind Prophet Muhammadṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him).
There are multiple mosques on the site that we know as masjid Al Aqsa. We think of masjid Al-Aqsa as the building at the southernmost corner of the Mosque. In actual fact, that is the Qibly mosque – so called because it is the closest to the Qibla. The whole mount is masjid Al Aqsa and is sometimes referred to the Haram Al-Sharif to prevent confusion. But there are other mosques present on the site which are usually connected to historical incidents e.g. the Buraq masjid, the Marwani masjid and more.
In 1967, Jerusalem left Muslim hands for the 3rd time and came under the control of Israel. The conquering Israeli soldiers flew their flag from the dome. The Israeli leadership realised that overt control of masjid Al-Aqsa would serve as a constant provocation to the Muslim world. They used the fig leaf of a Waqf in order to placate the Muslims into complacency.
In 1969, an Australian Zionist set fire to the mimbar of Nuruddin and the Qibly mosque itself. The resulting inferno enveloped the entire Qibly mosque. The Muslim world awoke to scenes from the worst of nightmares. Desperate palestinians tried to put out the flames in anyway they could. An entire Ummah hung their head in shame.
Since then, the mosque has been rebuilt and refurbished, but the assaults against the 3rd holiest site in Islam continue to this day. Excavations undermining the foundations of the entire Mosque, unauthorised visits, and daily threats to rebuild the old temple are all currently under way. Masjid Al-Aqsa still waits.

Palestinians condemn Israeli attack on al-Aqsa Mosque
Fierce clashes broke out inside the al-Aqsa Mosque on Sunday after Israeli forces stormed the compound and fired tear gas to disperse Palestinian worshippers, injuring three of them.

Clashes break out at al-Aqsa Mosque
Clashes have erupted at the al-Aqsa mosque in East Jerusalem after Israeli police entered the site.
Israeli security personnel broke into the compound to arrest what they called Palestinian 'stone throwers'.

Tensions have been at boiling point after the Israeli Defence Minister banned…

The Israeli government has barred Palestinians from entering the city of Old Jerusalem since Sunday, as tensions mounted following attacks that killed two Israelis and wounded a child.
The restrictions were put in place for two days with only Israelis, tourists, local residents, business owners and students allowed to enter the area.
Worship at the sensitive Al-Aqsa Mosque was limited to men aged 50 and over. Some women, who were refused entry to the mosque, protested outside.
Israel's decision has annoyed Palestinians, who feel subject to discrimination.

Palestinians have taken to the streets of Gaza City to protest against Israel’s raids on the al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem al-Quds.
The march comes as Israeli officials banned Palestinians from entering Jerusalem al-Quds’s Old City, where the al-Aqsa compound is located. Israeli forces have also stepped up their crackdown on Palestinian worshippers in the al-Aqsa Mosque. Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip are calling for a new Intifada or popular uprising to confront the Israeli atrocities.

Tel Aviv launched new airstrikes against the Gaza Strip and barred many Palestinian worshipers from entering the Al-Aqsa mosque in occupied East Jerusalem. Israeli forces clashed with Palestinian youth during demonstrations at Qalandia- a major checkpoint between Jerusalem and the West Bank city of Ramallah on Tuesday (October 6).
Several hundred Palestinians demonstrated over tension in Jerusalem's al-Aqsa mosque and recent bloodshed.
Some threw stones, whilst Israeli forces equipped with riot gear fired rubber bullets and threw stun grenades to disperse the crowd.
Violence has intensified in East Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank in recent weeks, raising concerns of a wider escalation, though it has not yes reached the level of past Israeli-Palestinian confrontations.
Four Israelis have been killed and three wounded since Thursday (October 1) in two stabbing and one drive-by shooting, blamed on Palestinian militants. Police shot dead two of the assailants.
Two Palestinians, one of them a teen, were killed and about 170 injured in clashes with Israeli soldiers in the West Bank.
Recent tensions have been inflamed in particular by frequent clashes between Palestinian stone-throwers and Israeli security forces at Jerusalem's al-Aqsa mosque compound, Islam's third-holiest shrine.
Palestinians fear increasing visits by Jewish groups to al-Aqsa, revered by Jews as the site of biblical temples, are eroding Muslim religious control there.

Israel bans Palestinians from Jerusalem's Old City after recent attacks
The Israeli government has barred Palestinians from entering the city of Old Jerusalem since Sunday, as tensions mounted following attacks that killed two Israelis and wounded a child.
The restrictions were put in place for two days with only Israelis, tourists, local residents, business owners and students allowed to enter the area.
Worship at the sensitive Al-Aqsa Mosque was limited to men aged 50 and over. Some women, who were refused entry to the mosque, protested outside.
Israel's decision has annoyed Palestinians, who feel subject to discrimination.
"I go there at least twice a week. So, after all those attacks that happened, they put a siege on Al-Aqsa. And, the Palestinians, such as young people like me, they can't go in. But, on the other hand, you can find the Israeli youth can go there, they can enter free, no problem," said Majd Awad, a Palestinian who holds an Israeli passport.
Awad said such action is the kind of thing that makes people so angry. "Just because one or two or five people, even, did an attack, so you implement collective punishment, and no one can enter under the name of security. It doesn't work like this," he said.
Tensions have flared between Israelis and Palestinians in recent weeks, and much of the unrest has focused on Jerusalem’s most sensitive holy site, the location of Al-Aqsa Mosque, which is known to Jews as Temple Mount and to Muslims as Noble Sanctuary.
Beyond the old city, Palestinian protesters threw stones at police and Israeli vehicles.
Political analysts say the reason for the recent conflict is clear.
"Sixty five percent of our society are the youth generation. People between 18 years old to 25 years old. They were born under occupation. They woke up to see the atrocities of the Israelis. They [have] come to see the hate culture raising and no leadership, and no guidance, and no institutions. So, you have this frustration and anger," said Mahdi Abdul Hadi, senior political analyst. Has the Third Intifada in Israel Already Begun?
A third intifada in Israel may be on the way following a recent escalation of violence in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, which has led to the death of a number of Israelis and Palestinians. Much of the conflict has arisen over clashes at the al-Aqsa Mosque, which is located on the Temple Mount. What was the cause of Second Intifada and how can increasing tensions in Israel be pacified before another uprising occurs? Watch it on the Lip News with Mark Sovel, Wes Clark Jr., and Philippe Assouline.

Palestinians march in Gaza City to protest Israel's crackdown in occupied West Bank

Tensions Escalate Between Israel and Palestine
Tensions are building between Israel and Palestine in both the Gaza Strip and the Occupied Territories. Tel Aviv launched new airstrikes against the Gaza Strip and barred many Palestinian worshipers from entering the Al-Aqsa mosque in occupied East Jerusalem. Israel escalating tensions to escape political impasse
The Palestinian president has accused Israel of escalating tensions following Tel Aviv’s introduction of new measures against Palestinians.
Mahmuod Abbas said in a statement that Tel Aviv is trying to escape its political impasse and international isolation through escalation and settler attacks at the al-Aqsa Mosque. The statement came amid continued tensions in the occupied Jerusalem al-Quds. Israeli forces deployed at the entrance of al-Quds’s Old City stopped and pushed back Palestinians trying to enter the area, which hosts the highly revered al-Aqsa Mosque. Tel Aviv has banned Palestinians from enter the Old City following the deaths of two Israelis over the weekend in al-Quds. Israeli troops have also detained a number of Palestinians in a series of raids in the northern city of Jenin. Nearly 30 Palestinians were injured in the attacks. Tensions have been on the rise in the occupied West Bank over the storming of the al-Aqsa mosque by settlers.

Turmoil at Al-Aqsa Mosque
For the first time since 1967, Israel temporarily closed Al Aqsa Mosque to worshippers and visitors because of tensions in East Jerusalem. The police reopened it later, but it was a rare and unusual move. Jordan, which holds custodial rights over Al Aqsa Mosque, responded by recalling its ambassador to Israel. Amman also said it would lodge a complaint with the United Nations against Israel. The latest escalation comes as a number of Israeli politicians and activists call for a change to the current situation. The international community does not recognise the Israeli annexation of the eastern part of Jerusalem in 1967, and under internati

Why has Israel closed al-Aqsa Mosque? - George Galloway - Comment - Press TV - 30th October 2014
Israeli forces have denied all Palestinians entry into the al-Aqsa Mosque over the death of an Israeli right-wing activist.
Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas has called the move a “declaration of war” and said the closure of the holy site would fuel “more tension and instability” in the Israeli-occupied lands.
The al-Aqsa compound, which lies in the Israeli-occupied Old City of al-Quds, is a flashpoint holy site in Islam. The location of the compound, known to Jews as the Temple Mount, is the holiest site in Judaism. The mosque is Islam’s third holiest mosque after Masjid al-Haram in Mecca and Masjid al-Nabawi in Medina.

The international community does not recognise the Israeli annexation of the eastern part of Jerusalem in 1967, and under international law it's considered occupied territory. Why is Al Aqsa Mosque so important? And could the ongoing turmoil lead to more violence?

The Threat to Al Aqsa mosque
The Palestinian Authority (PA) and the resistance movement of Hamas have warned against Israeli plans to impose "sovereignty" on the Al-Aqsa Mosque in al-Quds (Jerusalem).
PA official Mahmoud al-Habbash said on Sunday that there would be no sovereignty over Islamic and Christian holy sites other than Palestinian sovereignty. "This is the full right of the Arabs, including Muslims and Christians."
He warned that Tel Aviv is planning to "divide" the mosque, saying that such "efforts will not succeed."
Meanwhile, Hamas representative Yunis al-Astal also warned that the Israeli regime is seeking to "destroy" the mosque in order to build a temple.
The Israeli Knesset is set to discuss a proposal later this week to place the so-called Temple Mount, where Al-Aqsa Mosque is located, under Israeli sovereignty.
Tel Aviv had previously confirmed its plans to replace the Al-Aqsa Mosque with a temple.
Palestinians have denounced the plan as desecration. They say it is part of the Israeli regime's ongoing attempts to distort Arab and Islamic history.
Palestinians, however, argue that al-Quds is the capital of a future Palestinian independent state, and that its heritage should remain intact.
Over the past decades, Israel has tried to change the demographic makeup of al-Quds by constructing illegal settlements, destroying historical sites and expelling the local Palestinian population.

Until 1860, when the Jewish neighborhood Mishkenot Sha'ananim was established, this area constituted the entire city of Jerusalem. The Old City is home to several sites of key religious importance: the Dome of the Rock and al-Aqsa Mosque for Muslims, the Temple Mount and Western Wall for Jews and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre for Christians, It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site List in 1981.
Traditionally, the Old City has been divided into four uneven quarters, although the current designations were introduced only in the 19th century.[3] Today, the Old City is roughly divided into the Muslim Quarter, the Christian Quarter, the Jewish Quarter and the Armenian Quarter. The Old City's monumental defensive walls and city gates were built in the late 16th century by the Ottomans. The current population of the Old City resides mostly in the Islamic and Christian quarters. As of 2007 the total population was 36,965; the breakdown of religious groups in 2006 was 27,500 Muslims, 5,681 Christians, 790 Armenians and 3,089 Jews.[4]
Following the 1948 Israeli War of Independence, the Old City was captured by Jordan and Jewish residents were evicted. During the Six-Day War in 1967, which saw hand-to-hand fighting on the Temple Mount, Israeli forces captured the Old City along with the rest of East Jerusalem, subsequently annexing them as Israeli territory and reuniting them with the western part of the city. Today, the Israeli government controls the entire area, which it considers part of its national capital, although internationally it is recognized as part of occupied Palestinian Territory. The Jerusalem Law of 1980, effectively annexing East Jerusalem to Israel, was declared null and void by UN Security Council Resolution 478 and East Jerusalem is regarded by the international community as part of occupied Palestinian territory.[5][6]
