In 1994, the European Union declared the situation an official environmental emergency, and things have only gotten worse since then. In the city of Naples, Italy, the Mafia has controlled the waste-management industry for decades -- dumping and burning trash across its rolling hills and vineyards. In 1994, the European Union declared the situation an official environmental emergency, and things have only gotten worse since then. When we investigated the situation we found mutated sheep, poisoned mozzarella, alarming rates of cancer, and pissed off farmers ready to push back against the Camorra, Italy's most powerful and dangerous criminal organization (and the government that enables it).

Originally a mobster for the Colombo crime family, and later for the Brooklyn faction of the Gambinos, Gravano participated in the conspiracy to murder Gambino boss Paul Castellano. Gravano played a key role in planning and executing Castellano's murder; other conspirators included John Gotti, Angelo Ruggiero, Frank DeCicco, and Joseph Armone. After Castellano's death, Gotti elevated Gravano to underboss, a position he held at the time he became a government witness. At the time, Gravano was the highest-ranking member of the Five Families to break his Cosa Nostra oath and cooperate with the government. His testimony drew a wave of Cosa Nostra members to also become government witnesses.

Eng/Nat
A UN-sponsored conference on organised crime opens tomorrow (Monday) in Naples.
For decades the Roman Catholic Church in Sicily kept silent about organised crime. But now a number of priests are denouncing the Mafia and urging their parishioners to follow suit.
APTV was in Termini Imerese, Sicily, earlier this week for a candlelight march in support of priests who are fighting the Mafia.
The bell tolls for the death of the Sicilian Mafia - at least that is what some Catholic priests have decided.
As never before, priests in Sicily are risking their lives to openly challenge the Mafia bosses and encourage the people to rise up against organised crime.
Some two-thousand residents of the small town of Termini Imerese poured into the street of their town in a gesture of solidarity with Father Gino Sacchetti.
He is one of many Sicilian priests living with a death threat from the Mafia and the fifth priest living near Palermo with a permanent escort of armed guards.
Sacchetti's parishioners prayed for his life in a silent candlelight march through the streets. Their unity helped to break down the wall of fear that protects the Mafia.
Father Sacchetti works with young drug addicts. Two weeks ago, he found a sheep with its throat slit hanging outside the door of his social center.
The priest wanted to create a rehabilitation center in an area run by the Mafia and this, investigators say, is the likely reason for the death threat.
But the church will not succumb.
SOUNDBITE:
"Si possono sconfiggere I mali del mondo, la violenza, la corruzione e la Mafia stessa.''
Translation: "It is possible to defeat the evil in the world, violence, corruption and the Mafia itself.''
SUPER CAPTION: Cardinal Salvatore Pappalardo, Archbishop of Palermo
The archbishop of Palermo, Cardinal Salvatore Pappalardo, spoke about the sacrifice of Father Puglisi, who was killed last year because of his anti-mafia sermons.
He also told the congregation about Father Zambolin who the cardinal ordered to leave Palermo because he is afraid the priest will be killed.
But the cardinal said the church is not giving up.
SOUNDBITE:
"La chiesa Palermitana lungi dall abbandonare il campo raccoglie la sfida delle forze del male nessuno puo tirarsi indietro nei sacerdoti nei laici."
Translation: "The church of Palermo far from giving up, takes the challenge of the forces of evil, no one can turn back priests and lay people."
SUPER CAPTION: Cardinal Salvatore Pappalardo, Archbishop of Palermo
Father Sacchetti said he will not be intimidated. He's staying in Termini Imerese protected by his bodyguards.
SOUNDBITE:
Q: "Ha paura?''
Translation: "Are you afraid?''
A: "No absolutamente."
Translation: "Absolutely not."
Father Ennio Pintacuda was the first Sicilian priest forced to live with a permanent escort of bodyguards after receiving repeated death threats from Mafia bosses.
SOUNDBITE:
"Convivo anche con la paura. E siccome non e da ora diventa una compagna inseparable che pero non riesce a dominarci."
Translation: "I also live in fear and because it has been so long by now it has become an inseparable companion that cannot succeed in dominating us."
SUPER CAPTION: Father Ennio Pintucada
He has had to live with the isolation imposed by part of the Church in Sicily which had turned a blind eye to the Mafia for decades. Father Pintacuda hopes the mentality of accepting the Mafia will be overcome.
SOUNDBITE:
"The priest, they're going to do their job as priests, and the policemen they're going to get the Mafia. They get the Mafia. Everybody do the thing they are supposed to be, you know.''
Q: "What's the priests' job?''
A: "They got to stay in the church I guess."

Eng/French/Nat
A call for a massive international drive against organised crime has been criticised by the U-S Attorney General as over-ambitious.
Janet Reno was remarking on the U-N Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali's plea to the world to say an emphatic "no" to crime.
They're both attending a U-N crime conference in Naples, Italy which is looking at how to tackle gangs in the former Eastern bloc, as well as the U-S, Italy and Japan.
Delegates from 187 countries have come to this port city in order to forge ties against the world's growing international criminal warlords.
Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is co-hosting the conference with the UN Secretary General Boutros Boutros Ghali.
Today, the UN Chief opened the conference calling on governments to join forces to combat organised crime.
SOUNDBITE FRENCH:
" By this conference, the international community as a whole wishes to demonstrate its firm resolve to say "no" to international crime".
SUPER CAPTION: Boutros Boutros Ghali, UN Secretary General
The crime syndicates are well-known, the Sicilian Mafia, the Japanese Yakuza, the Russian Mafia and the Colombian Cartels among others.
So far, these organizations have proven much more effective than their crime-fighting counterparts.
With little co-operation and co-ordination between the nations, and the apparent failure of Interpol to police international boundaries properly, criminals move easily from border to border.
Delegates began the slow process of designing methods to work together, examining new ways to eliminate obstacles to capture criminals who quickly cross national borders.
This includes working on bilateral agreements on extradition, collecting data and establishing common laws.
Naples, the host city, is a prime example of a city in the grip of the mob. The Camorra, the local Mafia syndicate, has operated from here for decades.
To protect the delegates, the Italians secured eleven-thousand policemen to patrol the conference centre.
The original inspiration reportedly came from Judge Giovanni Falcone, who was killed two years ago after threatening to crack down on the mob.
SOUNDBITE:
"Experience has demonstrated that a policy reacting to individual crimes means that criminals will always maintain the initiative, choosing their area of criminal activity and corruption and killing at will. A war of attrition against lower level members of criminal organizations is far less effective than a strategy aimed at criminal gangs, understood as illegal enterprises, and at their profits can society gain the upper hand over criminal gangs".
SUPER CAPTION: Janet Reno, US Attorney General
That the conference is taking place is seen as a positive sign in fighting organised crime. But with the lawlessness of some of the participant countries, notably Russia and Italy, the US Attorney General has stressed the need for national rather than international laws.

Italian/Nat
A key witness at the trial of an alleged Nazi war criminal has been injured trying to flee his hotel in Rome.
84 year old Karl Hass broke his pelvis in a fall from a first floor terrace just hours before he was due to give evidence against another former German S-S officer - Erich Priebke.
Priebke, who was extradited from Argentina, is accused of the Second World War massacre of more than 300 civilians in the Italian capital.
A military ambulance stood by outside Rome San Spirito hospital this morning ready to carry former S-S Major Karl Hass to the military prison hospital.
The 84-year-old Hass arrived in Rome on Thursday and was questioned for several hours by the prosecutor in the Priebke war crimes trial.
Hass was then escorted to the Gerber hotel in the centre of Rome where he was to spend the night before appearing on the witness stand.
Several members of the secret military police were posted outside the hotel.
During the night Hass apparently climbed out of the window, clinging to the sill before sliding down to a terrace below.
On the terrace he fell into a window box, breaking his pelvis.
The agents heard the noise and rushed to his rescue.
This morning Hass' jacket was still hanging, stuck in the railing of the first floor terrace.
The attempted escape raised the tension level at Rome's military tribunal Friday morning.
Anxious authorities called in a bomb squad to investigate a suspicious looking truck parked in front of the tribunal.
Chaos and confusion filled the courtroom, causing prosecutors and defence lawyers to put off today's session.
Erich Priebke, stoic as always, was escorted out of the courtroom by police after a brief appearance.
There's rampant speculation about why Hass tried to flee.
SOUNDBITE: (Italian)
After the interrogation he had with Prosecutor Intelisano-- which lasted a long time-- he felt very disturbed and probably he also realised that his position wasn't so clear, maybe he was very afraid or during the night someone could have called him... who knows? It is a mystery.
SUPERCAPTION: Giovanni Gigliozzi, National Association of Martyrs' families.
Priebke, 82, is on trial for his role in the March 24, 1944 massacre in caves outside Rome that was ordered in retaliation for a bombing by resistance fighters that killed 32 Nazi soldiers.
More than 300 victims were machine-gunned.
Hass was on the staff of the German Embassy in Rome during the war.
Prosecutor Intelisano is due to interrogate Hass again, this time in the prison hospital.
It is not clear yet if or when Hass will testify before the court.

As legend has it, Rome, Italy, was founded by the twin brothers, Romulus and Remus, in 700 B.C. The former Caput Mundi, or Capital of the World, sits beneath Palatine Hill, where the ruins of its original incarnation are open for exploration.
No Rome tour is complete without stopping by the remains of the Temple of Saturn and Arch of Septimus, both located in the Roman Forum. Get in touch with your inner gladiator and stop by the Colosseum, a relic of Roman bloodsports and perhaps the most recognizable element of the city.
Toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain to ensure you’ll return to Rome one day; don’t toss in two coins unless you’re ready to fall in love with a Roman. Continue your Rome sightseeing in St. Peter’s Square, home of St. Peter’s Basilica. The world’s largest church, designed by Michelangelo, is both a remarkable structure and a tribute to faith. You can look down from the famous dome to the Holy Square, which is usually filled with the faithful looking to obtain a blessing from the Pope. After this, it’s just a few steps to restaurants filled with Italian food. Forget coming back to Rome – you’ll never want to leave.
What’s your favorite memory of Rome?

Travel video about destination Roma in Italy.
Roma Aeterna, eternal city and ancient centre of the world.
The Piazza Navona is situated in one of the Italian capital's most beautiful squares in a city that has always been a dream destination for travelers from all over the world. Three large fountains adorn the large oval square that was built above the ruins of a Domitian stadium that dates back to the 3rd century A.D.
The Romans had a special regard for fountains, the most famous of which is the Fontana Di Trevi. It was designed by Nicolo Salvi for the façade of the Palazzo Poli.
The Via Appia Antica was the most important street in ancient Rome. It connected the southern area with the main city and even today, one can walk over its ancient cobblestones.
Pope Gregory XIII had the Palazzo Del Quirinale built as his summer residence but it was not long after that the Italian monarchs acquired it as their Renaissance palace. Today it is the residence of Italy's President and the daily changing of the guards ceremony is still a popular attraction.
The 17th century St. Peter's Square is the most beautiful square in the world and is situated in the centre of the Vatican, an autonomous Church State in the heart of Rome that also contains the imposing and breathtaking Petersdom, the largest Christian church in the world.
The allure of this city lies in its combination of chaos and joie de vivre, elegance and creativity. Rome is a complete work of art!

Well, welcome to Italy! This week we're exploring the fashion capital of Europe. We're here in Milan. But of course there is more to do in Milan than just go shopping. So we're going to be showing you 20 attractions around town.
We had 3 days in Milan so we hit the ground running and tried to see and do as much as possible. We made time for major attractions like Il Duomo, Sforza Castle, and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, but we also veered away from the crowds in search of street art and interesting neighborhoods. This being Italy, we also tried to prioritize meals, sampling everything from pizza to risotto, and cappuccinos to aperitivos. The following travel guide will highlight 20 things to do when you visit Milan, Italy
1) Milan Catherdral (Il Duomo - Duomo di Milano - Domm de Milan)
2) Il Duomo Terrace
3) Italian Breakfast - Cappuccino and sweet Italian pastries
4) Sforza Castle - Castello Sforzesco
5) The Galleria - Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II
6) Risotto alla Milanese - Milan style risotto
7) Street Art around Porta Ticinese
8) Colonne di San Lorenzo - Columns of San Lorenzo Roman Ruins
9) Boat tour down the canal (linea traghetti gaggiano milano)
10) Dine along the canal in Milan's Navigli District
11) Aperitivo drinks and buffet - Apéritifs and digestifs
12) Shopping in Milan down Via Torino
13) Visiting Chinatown for some Chinese food
14) Ride a bicycle in Milan like a local
15) Pizza al taglio (pizza al trancio) Italian pizza by the slice
16) Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio containing relics of the 3 Magi
17) Duomo Museum covering the cathedrals history in-depth
18) New City Views with a hop-on-hop-off bus pass
19) Museum of Natural History - Museo Civico di Storia Naturale di Milano
20) Night views of Milan nearby Il Duomo
Our trip to Milan, Lombardy was part of the Blogville project where we stayed in a local apartment and experienced all of the best cultural activities, museums, restaurants, arts and entertainment the city has to offer. This city guide is our best attempt to create a mix of best attractions and off-the-beaten-path activities that you won't necessarily find in a typical Milan tourism brochure.
20 Things to do in Milan, Italy Travel Guide Video Transcript:
Our first stop was Il Duomo, which is the most recognized attraction in the city. The cathedral took nearly six centuries to complete and the exterior is covered in Candoglia marble, which gives it its off-white pinkish colour.
Now we weren't entirely sure what an Italian breakfast looks like so we did a bit of research and asked around and apparently it is just a coffee and anything sweet. So that could be pastries, bread with jam, cake or cookies. So we've sat down at a little cafe and we're going to have our first Italian breakfast with cappuccino and sweet pastries.
Something that surprised us about Milan is that there is a castle right in the middle of the city. Sforza Castle was built in the 15th century by the Duke of Milan, and it then underwent several restorations and expansions in the following centuries. Today it houses several of the city's most prized art possessions, including frescoes by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo's very last sculpture.
For some upscale designer shopping, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is the place to be. It is considered one of the world's oldest and most beautiful shopping malls, and its most impressive feature is an arching glass and cast iron roof.
So we just found a local little restaurant and we're going to be trying a traditional dish that is very popular in this city and in the Lombardy region. We are going to have Risotto alla Milanese.
The Colonne di San Lorenzo are the remains of Roman ruins that date back to the 2nd century. They are believed to have been part of a bath house.
Another fun activity to try in Milan is a boat tour of the canals. The city's canals are attributed to Leonardo Da Vinci, who in 1482 was called over by the Duke of Milan to help renovate the city’s canal system.
Milan's Navigli District is one of the liveliest parts of town especially when the sun goes down for dining al fresco.
So we've gone out for our first Italian Aperitivo. Which is kind of like a pre-dinner drinking tradition. Basically, you get yourself a cocktail for about 10 Euros and that gives you access to this massive buffet.
And that's all for our visit to Milan. We hope this video will give you some cool ideas of sights and attractions to check out around town, and if you have any other suggestions for travellers, feel free to add those to the comments below.
This is part of our Travel in Italy series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Italian culture, Italian arts, Italian foods, Italian religion, Italian cuisine and Italian people.

wn.com/Travel Guide Video 10 Things You Need Do In Tuscany, Italy
when I first saw the "Under the tucsan Sun trailer" I knew that I need to discover Toscana or Tuscany as the Italian folk says (Travel Channel Tuscany)... today after visiting Rome, Bologna, Genova, Sardinia, Florence, Verona, Venezia, Firenze, Pisa, Siena, Livorno, Padova, Viareggio, Lucca, Volterra, Chianti Barberino val de Elsa and San Gimignano ...so I decided to create this travel guide video for you! And I'm pretty excited to guide you through one of the most beautiful countries of Europe. In this video I introduce you Tuscany in Italy-The Charmed Land and the Dolce Vita Under the Tuscan Sun.
To sum up here are 10 things you should do in Tuscany:
1: sleep in a typical Tuscan Villa or Middle age like castle in Tuscany like "Villa Pitiana"
2: visit traditional italian cities like "Barberino val de Elsa" and enjoy the dolce vita
3: enjoy the view: like me in San Gimignano, Italy's Towering Hill Town
4: breath in the culture, make a guided tour in Florence (Firenze) and explore the Galleria dell Academia, make a walk on Piazza della Signoria and Palazzo Vecchio, check out the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore with the Baptistery, or discover the view from thr Campanile - Bell Tower. There are so many tourist attractions in Florence...you won't believe your eyes when crossing the Ponte Vecchio bridge. Oh and make sure to visit Boboli Garden and Pitti Palace formal seat of the Medici family. I fall in love with it as you can see in my video

Come join me on my trip to the beautiful city of Venice in Italy, which is considered t be one of the greatest tourist attractions in the world.
Veneice is a city in the north eastern part of the italian country right at the Adriatic within the province of Venetia and is often called La Serenissima.
The city counts 270.884 inhabitants, with only 62.000 people living in the historic centre, called centro storico and 30.000 more on other island in the lagoon. There are more than 100 islands in the lagoon of Venice.
The republic of Venice has been an important political and economic power in europa for about 1000 years, but lost its independence in 1897, when Napoleon set foot on the well known St. Mark's Square and forced the supreme authority to surrender.
Today the leading branch it tourism. In 2006 over 14.000.000 people visited the city to witness magnificent sights like the St. Mark's Basilica, the Campanile or the beautiful Rialto Bridge.

The gritty maze of the medieval city that makes up the core of Genoa is both beauty and the beast. The grandeur and heritage of this once great trading city lives side by side with modern vice and decrepitude. The odious smelling alleys give way to modern and chic restaurants and shops. Genoa is one of the most difficult of cities to describe and is very different from more generally travelled Italian cities like Rome, Florence or Venice.
My Grandfathers WWII RAF flight record for those that might be interested - the campaign against Genoa looks to be one of his earlier flights:

One of Italy's biggest organised crime trials in years - dubbed Mafia Capital - has opened in Rome, where councillors and gangsters allegedly stole millions of euros of public cash.
A one-eyed, neo-fascist gangster called Massimo Carminati is accused of having run the criminal network. He will be questioned via a prison video-link.
According to prosecutors, mobsters flourished under Rome's former right-wing mayor Gianni Alemanno.
It was a Mafia-type network, they say.
However, the operation was separate from southern Italy's traditional Mafia activities such as drug-running and extortion, anti-Mafia prosecutor Alfonso Sabella told Reuters news agency.
Forty-six defendants are on trial in the corruption case, which concerns millions of euros allegedly stolen from city hall. The suspects were arrested last December.
Gangsters allegedly conspired with local politicians to siphon off funds intended for migrant and refugee centres, and for rubbish collection in Rome and the surrounding Lazio region.
Ex-mayor Gianni Alemanno denies wrongdoing. He is under investigation, but is not involved in this trial.
The alleged gang members on trial include two close associates of Mr Carminati - Salvatore Buzzi and Riccardo Brugia.
Like Mr Carminati, Mr Brugia used to be in a violent, outlawed far-right group called NAR (the Armed Revolutionary Nuclei).
NAR members were implicated in the notorious bombing of Bologna train station in 1980, which killed 85 people.
Mr Carminati, in jail in Parma, lost an eye in a shoot-out with police in 1981 while trying to flee to Switzerland.
The trial will move to a court bunker at Rebibbia prison on the outskirts of Rome after the opening session.
It is expected to last until next summer.
Last week, the current mayor of Rome, Ignazio Marino, was forced to resign in an unrelated scandal involving expenses.

The Sicilian Mafia, also known as Cosa Nostra ("Our Thing"), is a criminal syndicate in Sicily, Italy. It is a loose association of criminal groups that share a common organizational structure and code of conduct. Each group, known as a "family", "clan", or "cosca", claims sovereignty over a territory, usually a town or village or a neighbourhood (borgata) of a larger city, in which it operates its rackets. Its members call themselves "men of honour", although the public often refers to them as "mafiosi". The Mafia's core activities are protection racketeering, the arbitration of disputes between criminals, and the organizing and oversight of illegal agreements and transactions.[1][2]
Following waves of emigration, the Mafia has spread to other countries such as the United States, Canada, and Australia.
A crime (or misdemeanor or felony) is an act done by a person which is against the laws of a country or region. A person who does this is called a criminal.
The basic idea of what things are called "crimes" is that they are thought to be things that might cause a problem for another person. Things like killing another person, injuring another person, or stealing from another person are crimes in most countries. Also, it can be a crime to eat some types of food, such as meat of rare exotic animals, marijuana leaves, or mushrooms that contain psychedelic drugs.
When some criminals make money from crime, they try to stop the police finding out where the money came from by money laundering.

The Mafia, a network of organized-crime groups based in Italy and America, evolved over centuries in Sicily, an island ruled until the mid-19th century by a long line of foreign invaders. Sicilians banded together in groups to protect themselves and carry out their own justice. In Sicily, the term “mafioso,” or Mafia member, initially had no criminal connotations and was used to refer to a person who was suspicious of central authority. By the 19th century, some of these groups emerged as private armies, or “mafie,” who extorted protection money from landowners and eventually became the violent criminal organization known today as the Sicilian Mafia. The American Mafia, which rose to power in the 1920s, is a separate entity from the Mafia in Italy, although they share such traditions as omerta, a code of conduct and loyalty.
In 1861, Sicily became a province of recently unified Italy. However, chaos and crime reigned across the island as the fledgling Italian government tried to establish itself. In the 1870s, Roman officials even asked Sicilian Mafia clans to help them by going after dangerous, independent criminal bands; in exchange, officials would look the other way as the Mafia continued its protection shakedowns of landowners. The government believed this arrangement would be temporary, lasting just long enough for Rome to gain control; instead, the Mafia clans expanded their criminal activities and further entrenched themselves in Sicilian politics and the economy. The Mafia became adept at political corruption and intimidated people to vote for certain candidates, who were in turn beholden to the Mafia. Even the Catholic Church was involved with Mafia clans during this period, according to Raab, who notes that the church relied on Mafiosi to monitor its massive property holdings in Sicily and keep tenant farmers in line.
In order to further strengthen themselves, Sicilian clans began conducting initiation ceremonies in which new members pledged secret oaths of loyalty. Of chief importance to the clans was omerta, an all-important code of conduct reflecting the ancient Sicilian belief that a person should never go to government authorities to seek justice for a crime and never cooperate with authorities investigating any wrongdoing.

Eng/French/Nat
The United Nations Secretary General, Boutros Boutros-Ghali, is urging police forces around the world to launch a co-ordinated offensive against organised crime.
Boutros-Ghali today (Monday) opened an international conference on crime in the Italian city of Naples.
He told officials from over 130 countries that an international convention was needed to fight the increasing power of international gangs.
Naples was chosen as the site for the United Nations conference because of its reputation as a power-base for the Italian Mafia.
The original idea for the meeting came from Giovanni Falcone, the anti-Mafia judge who was assassinated with his wife by the Cosa Nostra two years ago.
Italy's Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and U-N Chief Boutros Boutros-Ghali are co- hosting the three-day event. They hope to initiate improvements in the pooling of information between the world's police forces.
The conference has been called an admission that the international police force Interpol isn't having much success in tackling international crime.
SOUNDBITE FRENCH:
"I don't think it is necessary to outline the importance of this conference. All the world knows of the war being carried out against our states by criminal associations.
SUPER CAPTION:
Silvio Berlusconi, Italian President.
SOUNDBITE French:
"As you know, from the 1st of January, Italy becomes a member of the United Nations Security Council and will have increased responsibilities and tasks. And if you consider this international conference on crime, you will recognize the Italian government's ability to mobilize international public opinion to fight this new danger which menaces international peace. Today, we don't only have the problems of war and peace, but we also face the problems of international crime, and the mafia which represents a true danger to the harmonious development and peace of our world".
SUPER CAPTION:
Boutros Boutros Ghali, United Nations Secretary General.
The main problems on the agenda are: money laundering, drug and arms trafficking, extortion and prostitution.
Officials will consider an international convention covering prostitution, illegal immigration and the illegal trade of human body parts.

United Nations secretary general Dr Boutros Ghali told delegates in Naples, Italy, that countries should co-operate more in the fight against organised crime gangs, such as the Yakuza.
But the United States, Britain and Australia say his idea is over-ambitious.
Delegates from 187 countries have come to this port city in order to forge ties against the world's growing international criminal warlords.
Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is co-hosting the conference with the UN Secretary General Boutros Boutros Ghali.
Today, the UN Chief opened the conference calling on governments to join forces to combat organized crime.
SOUNDBITE FRENCH:
" By this conference, the international community as a whole wishes to demonstrate its firm resolve to say "no" to international crime".
SUPER CAPTION:
Boutros Boutros Ghali, UN Secretary General
The crime syndicates are well-known, the Sicilian Mafia, the Japanese Yakuza, the Russian Mafia and the Colombian Cartels among others.
So far, these organizations have proven much more effective than their crime-fighting counterparts.
With little co-operation and co-ordination between the nations, and the apparent failure of Interpol to police international boundaries properly, criminals move easily from border to border.
SOUNDBITE FRENCH:
"During the past few years, its fields of operation have been constantly expanding to its traditional spheres of activity, such as prostitution the arms trade and trafficking in drugs, organized crime has now added money laundering, trading nuclear technology and human organs and transporting illegal immigrants to its list. And these are just a few examples of the new markets which feed and enrich contemporary transnational crime".
SUPER CAPTION:
Boutros Boutros Ghali, UN Secretary General
Delegates began the slow process of designing methods to work together, examining new ways to eliminate obstacles to capture criminals who quickly cross national borders.
This includes working on bilateral agreements on extradition, collecting data and establishing common laws.
Naples, the host city, is a prime example of a mob-victimised city. The Camorra, the local Mafia syndicate, has operated from the city for decades.
To protect the delegates, the Italians secured eleven-thousand policemen to patrol the conference centre.
The original inspiration reportedly came from Judge Giovanni Falcone, who was killed two years ago after threatening to crack down on the mob.
His sister, Maria Falcone gave some advice of her own.
SOUNDBITE ITALIAN:
"To beat this phenomenon of international crime, one needs legislative commonality throughout all the nations".
SUPER CAPTION:
Maria Falcone, Sister of assassinated Judge

Janet Reno, US Attorney General

Italian/Nat
Italian police, facing a massive influx of Albanian refugees into the country from the strife-torn Balkan country, have been struggling to deal with a resulting rise in crime.
Among the estimated seven-thousand Albanians who have arrived in Italy are members of Albania's Mafia involved in drugs and prostitution rackets.
The violent anarchy in the small Albanian country has led to hundreds of thousands of weapons being released - many of which are finding their way to Italy.
The Italian government is concerned that these weapons will get into the hands of organised criminals such as the Italian Mafia.
A-P-T-V reports on how the Italian police are trying to deal with the situation in Brindisi.
Day and night, the influx of boats carrying Albanian refugees continues unabated.
Vessels ranging from rusty fishing boats to old military ships are dangerously overcrowded as refugees risk their lives to escape the violence at home.
After two days at sea with very little food and water, the refugees are weak and very dirty, with some of them needing medical attention.
But it's not the huge number of Albanians which the authorities are having to cope with - but the resulting rise in crime.
SOUNDBITE: (Italian)
"Certainly all the boats need to be checked, the people need to be searched and their bags need to be searched - this is part of Italian law.
SUPERCAPTION: Commander Angelo Roberto, Italian Coastguard
Italian authorities carefully check boats and refugees for guns - looted from arms depots in Albania by rebels - and drugs which are being brought into Italy.
This haul was found on a refugee boat which arrived in Brindisi a few days ago.
Italian police say members of Albania's Mafia involved in drugs and prostitution rackets are slipping into the country unnoticed among the thousands of refugees.
They are concerned that these weapons will get into the hands of other criminals, notably the Italian Mafia.
SOUNDBITE: (Italian)
"Loads of weapons were found. Thousands of Kalishnikovs, hundreds of guns. As there is no more control in Albania, a great worry is that the guns are going to end up here. They may be sold."
SUPERCAPTION: Lieutenant Colonel Pasquale Lavacca, Military Police Official
Checks by the Italian authorities have led to 78 criminals, already known to the Italian police, being sent back to Albania.
Before the breakdown of law and order in Albania, the Italian police were able to rely on the help of Albanian authorities to identify criminals arriving in Italian ports - but now there is no way of checking and many criminals are slipping in unnoticed.

belong to our local mafias who usually import a lot of arms from
the former Yugoslavia, especially Montenegro. That actual crisis
in Albania and the increase in military arms held in Puglia can
create a big big problem for the use and exportation of these

STORYLINE
Authorities in Italy and France said on Thursday they had broken up a criminal ring that smuggled illegal immigrants from the Middle East to Europe, with more than 50 arrests.
Italian police said the ring had made millions of euros (dollars) trafficking more than 5,000 people via Greece to Italy's Adriatic coast on rickety boats or crammed into the back of trucks that arrived by ferry.
Police said the ring was headed in Rome by a 30-year-old Iraqi Kurd named Ali Ako, also known as "Arsalan".
He allegedly managed the global strategies for the criminal group from its Rome headquarters, where he was arrested.
After gathering the illegal immigrants in the Italian capital, the group sent many of them on to France, Germany and Britain, with immigrants paying between 7,500 and 15,000 US dollars for the transfers.
The operation followed a three-year investigation, Italian police said.
Pietro Grasso, Italian special anti-Mafia prosecutor, said the investigation just completed by Italian police could also help improve intelligence of international terrorism structures.
Italian police emphasised the cooperation with their French and British counterparts, who are currently carrying out searches and arrests to stop the criminal ring in their countries.

Italian police say they have seized more than €1.6 bn ($1.76 bn) in assets from five Sicilian siblings suspected of links to the mafia.
The five are thought to have been helped by the criminal group to secure public construction contracts.
Police in the regional capital Palermo say it is one of the largest raids they have ever carried out.
Analysts say Sicily's Cosa Nostra and other mafia groups have expanded their activities during Italy's recession.
Among the assets seized are bank accounts, property and furniture.
The five - three brothers and two sisters - are all in their 60s and 70s.
They worked as labourers in the early 1980s but went on to become billionaires, Italian media reported.

This was northern Europe's St Valentine's Day massacre, the worst ever mafia bloodbath outside Italy and the United States. Suddenly, journalists across the globe were struggling with what the New York Times called an 'unpronounceable name': 'ndrangheta (en-drang-get-ah.) In the 1990s, the 'ndrangheta placed itself in a leading position in the European wholesale cocaine market by dealing direct with South American producers. It is now thought to be the wealthiest and most powerful of Italy's major criminal brotherhoods. But how, when, and why did it first emerge?

Early Life
Many New York gangsters in the early 20th Century came from impoverished backgrounds, but this was not the case for the legendary Al Capone. Far from being a poor immigrant from Italy who turned to crime to make a living, Capone was from a respectable, professional family. His father, Gabriele, was one of thousands of Italians who arrived in New York in 1894. He was thirty years old, educated and from Naples, where he had earned a living as a barber. His wife Teresina (Teresa) was pregnant and already bringing up two sons: 2-year-old son Vincenzo and infant son Raffaele. The family moved to a poor Brooklyn tenement where Alphonse Capone was born on January 17, 1899.
