John Docherty (born 29 April 1940 in Glasgow) is a Scottish former football player and manager.
Having previously been manager of Cambridge United between January 1978 and 13 December 1983 and Brentford, his spell at Cambridge United saw the club in the Second Division where they managed respectable finishes, with eighth in 1979–80 being their highest. The following season saw the side as outside contenders for promotion before a late slump saw them finish 13th.
He was appointed Millwall manager in May 1986 following the departure of George Graham to Arsenal. In his second season as manager, he guided them to the Second Division title and gained Millwall their first top division campaign.
Docherty's team performed well in the first half of the 1988–89 season, topping the table at one point. Their form in the second half of the season faded, and their position of 10th place in the final table was their lowest standing all season, but still, this remains their highest league finishing position to date.

MANCHESTER UNITED, SIR MATT, MARY AND ME...the public face of Tommy Docherty is resolutely flippant, mischievous and wholly irreverent. Alex Thomson announces publication of the transcript of David Scott's extended interview with Brian and Janice Docherty. At over 250 pages, this was a huge amount of work by Alex and his team of UK Column members, all of whom are owed a huge thanks. The transcription of the interview is available here. Please distribute it as far and wide as you can. We appreciate it is a big read, but even reading the table of contents gives a great overview of the case. Alex's team formed following our announcement that the Docherty case should be treated as an open source investigation. So far, the response has been superb, with information coming in thick and fast. That information is already being used to motivate MPs, MEPs, the police, the judiciary and other public authorities, and we must also th...

In this part of the interview Colin begins by discussing how the club moved through the 1960's and to Football League status at the beginning of the 1970's under Bill Leivers. He talks about consolidation in the Football League and how, despite new faces at the club, it retained and grew the ambition which had achieved so much already. Discussion also includes information and stories relating to the 1980's as Colin's involvement continued to develop, together with a unique behind the scenes insight on those times. Again much of the discussion focusses on the characters of that period including Ron Atkinson, John Docherty, John Beck and of course Chris Turner.
