As with your phone, you can install
3rd party keyboards on your
Android based
No.1 D5 (or K8/K8 mini/
K18) smartwatch. One
HUGE problem with most keyboards is that they are designed for rectangular screens, and they run edge to edge to make the most use of the screen space. They simply won't work on a round screen.
There are a very few exceptions, however, and those keyboards that play well on a round watch are featured here.
At the end of the video you will see the culmination of a work in progress by a
Russian developer specifically targeted to this watch. Be sure to check out that keyboard. If you decide to install it, you'll need his custom files, and the link below will get you to the page with his
XDA-Developers Forum post.
Look for message #262:

In order to get his files to work, you will need the keyboard design program installed. You can download it from the
Google Play Store here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jbak2.JbakKeyboard
Remember to install this app, then open it so it can create the necessary files and folders on your watch. Then download PaulBort's files from the
XDA Forum, unzip them on your computer, and move them to your watch after plugging your watch into your computer and linking it as a
USB storage device.
Follow the video to see exactly where to place the files and how to link them in the keyboard application.
As for the other keyboards discussed, here are direct links to download them from the Google Play Store:

If you find any other keyboards I may have missed, please leave a comment below so we can all have a look.
UPDATE: For those excited about the TouchOne round keyboard, well, the version I have that runs on
Android 4.4 loads up and looks like the TouchOne keyboard layout when installed on a phone, not the round layout for a watch. If we ever get it working correctly for the watch format (it works great for
Android Wear, but not for straight Android),
I'll do a whole video on that
. In the meantime, it doesn't work on the round watch as the corners are cut off.
UPDATE 2: OK, there’s a lot more to the MessagEase keyboard than I was able to cover here (or even knew about at the time I made this video). If you’re seriously considering this keyboard, take a look at their detailed website here: https://www.exideas.com/ME/index
