PubMed contains more than 30 million citations to articles in the biomedical literature with new material added daily. It also includes citations to a small but useful selection of online books and documents. With a foundation in clinical medicine, PubMed includes citations to literature on a wide range of biomedical and health topics including environmental health, social sciences,
microbiology, genetics, and chemical and physical sciences. The largest component of PubMed is MEDLINE, the National Library of Medicine's premier bibliographic database containing citations and author abstracts from more than 5,000 biomedical journals published around the world. There is a process to determine whether or not to include a journal in MEDLINE.
In making this decision, NLM considers the recommendations of a group of advisors known as the literature selection technical review committee.
The committee meets three times a year to evaluate journals that have applied to MEDLINE.
Journals are selected based on scope and coverage, editorial policies and processes,
scientific rigor, production and administration, and impact. PubMed also includes citations and abstracts from articles included in PubMed Central, or PMC, a free online full-text
archive of biomedical and life sciences journals also hosted by the National Library of Medicine.
To be included in PubMed Central, a journal must meet the quality criteria of the National Library of Medicine collections and meet the scientific, editorial, and technical criteria for PMC.
When research is funded by the National Institutes of Health,
or NIH, the results must be available to the public. Therefore, individual articles reporting the results of NIH-funded research are also included in PubMed Central.
PubMed Central also serves as a repository for articles reporting on research funded by other public agencies and private research funders that share a similar mission to NIH. Records for these articles in PubMed Central that share research results with the public are added to PubMed even if the article is not published in a journal selected for MEDLINE or PubMed Central.
PubMed also provides access to the National Center for Biotechnology Information's online Bookshelf.
Bookshelf is comprised of more than 7,000 technical reports, systematic reviews, clinical guidelines,
reference works, and other monographs. Most PubMed records represent one journal article
and are composed of fields that provide specific information about the article including the journal source information, title of the journal article,
names of the authors and their affiliations, abstract published with the article,
and publication type, or description of the type of article like review or letter. For articles not in English, the PubMed records will also include the language in which the article was published. When available the PubMed record will provide research funding information and associated study data.
The National Library of Medicine adds Medical Subject Headings, or MeSH, terms to records from
MEDLINE selected journals. MeSH terms provide quick access to the topics of the article.
Most PubMed records are supplied electronically by publishers and enhanced with MeSH and with links to related resources by the National Library of Medicine. In addition to providing free access to PubMed via the web, the National Library of Medicine provides access to PubMed data to researchers, commercial vendors, and the public for repurpose and reuse.
PubMed makes finding biomedical journal information easy from anywhere you can access the internet.

Hi, my name is Alex, I'm a librarian at The University of
Alabama, and in this tutorial, we're going to talk about PubMed - what it is, why you might use it, and how to get started searching for articles.
We have a series of tutorials devoted to PubMed - today's is just the introduction. We'll show you the basics of searching PubMed, and provide more advanced help in other tutorials.
PubMed is a database provided by the National ?Library of Medicine. It's one of the best options for finding peer-reviewed, scientific literature on health, medicine, nutrition, and related fields. Most, but not all, articles that you'll find in PubMed are peer-reviewed.
When you search on PubMed you'll find a huge collection of medical and biomedical ?articles. One thing to remember is that some of the articles you'll find are not available in full-text. That means you won't have immediate access to the full article. Some of the articles that you'll find on PubMed are considered open access - that means they're freely available to anyone. Some are available in full-text to you because The University of Alabama provides access to them. And some won't be available at all - at least not immediately. You can request those articles for free through interlibrary loan.
Let's go ahead and get started trying to find scholarly, scientific articles. We'll start with a simple keyword search. And here are your search results. On the left you'll see a menu of search filters that you can use. We'll explore those more in another tutorial.
When you click on an article, you'll see this page. If you want to access the full-text of the article, just look to your top right. Remember that sometimes you won't be able to immediately access the full-text. In this case, you can.
Back on this page, you'll also find more information about the article. For example, the abstract, which is just a summary of the article. You'll also see a list of related articles, which can be very helpful sometimes. And a list of articles that cited this particular article.
You can also generate a citation in multiple citation styles. And at the top of the screen, you'll see some options for saving and organizing your articles. If you're just starting out, I would recommend email. That just allows you to email this particular page to yourself, or someone you know.
And that's all for this tutorial. We have other PubMed tutorials available if you want to learn more. And if you have a question, just ask a librarian.

A brief history of Spanish - Ilan Stavans
Trace the history and evolution of the Spanish language, from its origins in the 3rd century BCE to modern day.
--
Beginning in the third century BCE, the Romans conquered the Iberian peninsula. This period gave rise to several regional languages in the area that’s now Spain, including Castilian, Catalan, and Galician. One of these would become Spanish— but not for another 1,500 years. Those years tell the origin story of what’s become a global modern language. Ilan Stavans traces the evolution of Spanish.
