The name "Ohio" originated from Iroquois word ohi-yo’, meaning "great river". The state, originally partitioned from the Northwest Territory, was admitted to the Union as the 17th state (and the first under the Northwest Ordinance) on March 1, 1803. Although there are conflicting narratives regarding the origin of the nickname, Ohio is historically known as the "Buckeye State" (relating to the Ohio buckeye tree) and Ohioans are also known as "Buckeyes".
Standard Oil was a predominant American integrated oil producing, transporting, refining, and marketing company. Established in 1870 as a corporation in Ohio, it was the largest oil refiner in the world and operated as a major company trust and was one of the world's first and largest multinational corporations until it was broken up by the United StatesSupreme Court in 1911.
John D. Rockefeller was a founder, chairman and major shareholder. As it grew exponentially and engaged in business strategies, tactics and practices that were lawful but drove many smaller businesses under, Standard Oil became widely criticized in the public eye, even as it made Rockefeller the richest man in modern history. Other notable Standard Oil principals include Henry Flagler, developer of Florida's Florida East Coast Railway and resort cities, and Henry H. Rogers, who built the Virginian Railway (VGN), a well-engineered highly efficient line dedicated to shipping southern West Virginia's bituminous coal to port at Hampton Roads.

After Abraham Lincoln was elected to office, the Southern States decided that they would not take anymore of the Union's criticism of how they lived their life with owning slaves. South Carolina was the first to leave the Union followed by 10 other states. These 11 states made up the Confederacy with their own Constitution with greater emphasis on state's rights. John Davison Rockefeller Sr. (July 8, 1839 – May 23, 1937) was an American business magnate and philanthropist. He was a co-founder of the Standard Oil Company, which dominated the oil industry and was the first great U.S. business trust. Rockefeller revolutionized the petroleum industry, and along with other key contemporary industrialists such as Andrew Carnegie, defined the structure of modern philanthropy. In 1870, he founded Standard Oil Company and actively ran it until he officially retired in 1897.
Rockefeller founded Standard Oil as an Ohio partnership with his brother William along with Henry Flagler, Jabez A. Bostwick, chemist Samuel Andrews, and a silent partner, Stephen V. Harkness. As kerosene and gasoline grew in importance, Rockefeller's wealth soared and he became the world's richest man and the first American worth more than a billion dollars, controlling 90% of all oil in the United States at his peak. Adjusting for inflation, his fortune upon his death in 1937 stood at $336 billion, accounting for more than 1.5% of the national economy, making him the richest person in US history.
Rockefeller spent the last 40 years of his life in retirement at his estate, Kykuit, in Westchester County, New York. His fortune was mainly used to create the modern systematic approach of targeted philanthropy. He was able to do this through the creation of foundations that had a major effect on medicine, education and scientific research. His foundations pioneered the development of medical research and were instrumental in the eradication of hookworm and yellow fever.
Rockefeller was also the founder of both the University of Chicago and Rockefeller University and funded the establishment of Central Philippine University in the Philippines. He was a devoted Northern Baptist and supported many church-based institutions. Rockefeller adhered to total abstinence from alcohol and tobacco throughout his life. He was a faithful congregant of the Erie Street Baptist Mission Church, where he taught Sunday school, and served as a trustee, clerk, and occasional janitor. Religion was a guiding force throughout his life, and Rockefeller believed it to be the source of his success. Rockefeller was also considered a supporter of capitalism based in a perspective of social darwinism, and is often quoted saying "The growth of a large business is merely a survival of the fittest."
Notwithstanding these varied aspects of his public life, Rockefeller may ultimately be remembered simply for the raw size of his wealth. In 1902, an audit showed Rockefeller was worth about $200 million—compared to the total national GDP of $24 billion then.[11][104] His wealth continued to grow significantly (in line with U.S. economic growth) after as the demand for gasoline soared, eventually reaching about $900 million on the eve of the First World War, including significant interests in banking, shipping, mining, railroads, and other industries. According to the New York Times obituary, "it was estimated after Mr. Rockefeller retired from business that he had accumulated close to $1,500,000,000 out of the earnings of the Standard Oil trust and out of his other investments. This was probably the greatest amount of wealth that any private citizen had ever been able to accumulate by his own efforts."[105] By the time of his death in 1937, Rockefeller's remaining fortune, largely tied up in permanent family trusts, was estimated at $1.4 billion, while the total national GDP was $92 billion.[4] According to some methods of wealth calculation, Rockefeller's net worth over the last decades of his life would easily place him as the wealthiest known person in recent history. As a percentage of the United States' GDP, no other American fortune — including those of Bill Gates or Sam Walton — would even come close.

East Cleveland was partially founded by Scottish immigrants, whose names can still be found in the city such as Shaw Ave. , McIlrath Ave. , and Eddy Rd. . East Cleveland incorporated as a village in 1895 and became a city in 1911. This charter included provisions for women's suffrage, which at the time was unheard of east of the Mississippi River. Before the charter passed, the city of Cleveland unsuccessfully attempted to annex the municipality in 1910 and in 1916.
East Cleveland includes a portion of Euclid Avenue, which from the 1860s through the 1920s was known as "Millionaire's Row." The many estates along this stretch of road in East Cleveland including the home of the late John D. Rockefeller, the Standard Oil founder and "the world’s first billionaire."

The US Justice Department and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission filed charges against BP Products North America Inc. (subsidiary of BP plc) and several BP traders, alleging they conspired to raise the price of propane by seeking to corner the propane market in 2004.[464][465][466] In 2006, one former trader pleaded guilty.[465] In 2007, BP paid $303 million in restitution and fines as part of an agreement to defer prosecution.[467] BP was charged with cornering and manipulating the price of TET propane in 2003 and 2004. BP paid a $125 million civil monetary penalty to the CFTC, established a compliance and ethics program, and installed a monitor to oversee BP’s trading activities in the commodities markets. BP also paid $53 million BP into a restitution fund for victims, a $100 million criminal penalty, plus $25 million into a consumer fraud fund, as well as other payments.[468] Also in 2007, four other former traders were charged. These charges were dismissed by a US District Court in 2009 on the grounds that the transactions were exempt under the Commodities Exchange Act because they didn't occur in a marketplace but were negotiated contracts among sophisticated companies. The dismissal was upheld by the Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit in 2011.[466]
In November 2010, US regulators FERC and CFTC began an investigation of BP for allegedly manipulating the gas market. The investigation relates to trading activity that occurred in October and November 2008.[469][470] At that time, CFTC Enforcement staff provided BP with a notice of intent to recommend charges of attempted market manipulation in violation of the Commodity Exchange Act. BP denied that it engaged in "any inappropriate or unlawful activity." In July 2011, the FERC staff issued a "Notice of Alleged Violations" saying it had preliminarily determined that several BP entities fraudulently traded physical natural gas in the Houston Ship Channel and Katy markets and trading points to increase the value of their financial swing spread positions.[471]
BP's London offices, along with those of Royal Dutch Shell and Statoil, were raided in May 2013 by regulators from the European Commission, beginning an investigation into allegations the companies reported distorted prices to the price reporting agency Platts, in order to "manipulate the published prices" for several oil and biofuel products. The EC is probing allegations the companies colluded to rig prices for more than a decade.
BP plc,[5][6] sometimes referred to by its former name British Petroleum, is a British multinational oil and gas company headquartered in London, England. It is the sixth-largest energy company by market capitalization,[7] the fifth-largest company in the world measured by 2012 revenues, and the sixth-largest oil and gas company measured by 2012 production.[8][9] It is one of the six oil and gas "supermajors".[10] BP is vertically integrated and operates in all areas of the oil and gas industry, including exploration and production, refining, distribution and marketing, petrochemicals, power generation and trading. It also has renewable energy activities in biofuels and wind power.
As of December 2013, BP has operations in approximately 80 countries,[4] produces around 3.2 million barrels per day (510,000 m3/d) of oil equivalent,[1] has total proved reserves of 17.9 billion barrels (2.85×109 m3) of oil equivalent,[11] and has around 17,800 service stations.[12][13] Its largest division is BP America in the United States. In Russia BP owns a 19.75% stake in Rosneft, the world's largest publicly traded oil and gas company by hydrocarbon reserves and production. BP has a primary listing on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index; it had a market capitalisation of £85.2 billion as of April 2013, the fourth-largest of any company listed on the exchange.[14] It has secondary listings on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange.
BP's origins date back to the founding of the Anglo-Persian Oil Company in 1908, established as a subsidiary of Burmah Oil Company to exploit oil discoveries in Iran. In 1935, it became the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company and in 1954 British Petroleum.[15][16] In 1959, the company expanded beyond the Middle East to Alaska and in 1965 it was the first company to strike oil in the North Sea. British Petroleum acquired majority control of Standard Oil of Ohio in 1978. Formerly majority state-owned, the British government privatised the company in stages between 1979 and 1987. British Petroleum merged with Amoco in 1998, becoming BP Amoco plc, and acquired ARCO and Burmah Castrol in 2000, becoming BP plc in 2001. From 2003 to 2013, BP was a partner in the TNK-BP joint venture in Russia.

Presents the years 1861 to 1870 in American history. Starting with the secession of the eleven states that would form the Confederacy to John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil Company, the first monopoly in the big business world.
Lincoln refused to let go any states or military bases in the south. The Confederacy fired upon Fort Sumpter and these were the opening shots of the Civil War.
The Homestead Act allowed pioneers to move out west to farm on federal own land that was given to them once they filed an application and were approved. This was promoted by the northern republicans and once the southern states had seceeded from the Union, Congress passed the law and Lincoln signed it in.
To Lincoln, the war was about preserving the Union and not having two independent nations, but he was about to make it about slavery. To boost the moral on the Union side, he wrote the first draft of the Emancipation Proclamation freeing all slaves in the south. He made the war about slavery and the Union now saw the purpose of their fight.
Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address over the graves of the fallen soldiers in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. This famous speech spoke out about the uniting of a nation under one government and the new freedom that everyone would share thanks to the men who were still fighting and had already lost their lives in the Civil War.
General Lee of the Confederate Army surrenders to General Sherman of the Union Army in the town of Appomattox, Virginia. This was the end of the 4 year Civil War between the northern and southern states and the Union was back together.
Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth in Ford's Theater. He was dead one week after the end of the Civil War. Everyone in the nation mourned the lost of this great president. The just reconstruciton of the south would also die with him. He was the first president to be assassinated.
The Ku Klux Klan was formed during the Southern Reconstruction after the Civil War. The Reconstruction lost its ideal way after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and the southerns took their old social structures and put them back into place with African Americans at the bottom. The Ku Klux Klan was there to make sure that the African Americans did not take advantage of any of their new found freedoms such as voting, so they would not come into power over any whites.
The carpetbaggers were northerns moving from the north to the south during Reconstruction. The southerns also called them Yankees. The carpetbaggers also try to help set up black rights in the south, trying to get the black vote.
William H. Seward was the Secretary of State under Abraham Lincoln and the Andrew Johnson after he was assassinated. Seward was a great believer in manifest destiny and believed that the United States should buy the Alaskian Territory from the
Russian Empire. He started negotiating before he even got the approval from Andrew Johnson. It was a brillant purchase on the United States behalf.
Andrew Johnson was the first president to be impeached by Congress. He was impeached on the terms of not following an act laid down by Congress. Congress came up one vote short of impeaching Johnson. It was the Radicals trying to get Johnson out of office so he would stop hindering them and stop trying to reconstruct the south in a different way then the southerns had in mind.
The Transcontinental Railroad was the first time the West was connected to the East. It opeend up the country to the era of big business and migration across the country easier. Cities were competing to be the stops along the way and towns were starting to build up because they had become stops on the railway. The economic growth increased for the nation and because the railroad crossed state boarders the federal government had to set up the Interstate Commerce Act to regulate it.
John D. Rockefeller was the founder of Standard Oil Co. of Ohio and was the first business to have a monopoly on a certain market for big buinesses. He created his business from the bottom up and turned into a multi-million oil refinery.
Presents the years 1861 to 1870 in American history. Starting with the secession of the eleven states that would form the Confederacy to John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil Company, the first monopoly in the big business world.

The Rockefellers - The Legacy Of History's Richest Man: The American Way
The Rockefeller legacy began with a 16-year-old bookkeeper in Cleveland, Ohio, whose greatest ambitions were to earn $100,000 and live 100 years. His formal business training included a ten-week class in accounting, as well as a con-artist father who was known to say, “I cheat my boys every chance I get. I want to make ‘em sharp,” according to the biography John D. Rockefeller: Anointed with Oil.
That young man was John Davison Rockefeller in 1855, who in 25 years would become the wealthiest man of his time, and arguably the wealthiest in history, reigning over a monopoly that refined as much as 90 percent of America’s oil. His flagship comp

A sunny November day allowed a friend and I the perfect opportunity to explore the CSX Indianapolis Line west of Ridgeway, Ohio -- an area that was foreign to both of us. We came home with plentiful results. Also included in this video is an action-packed night in Alliance, Ohio at the Amtrak station. Enjoy!

His flagship company, Standard Oil, was broken up in 1911 by the Sherman Anti-Trust Act, but Rockefeller’s greatest legacy – his family – lives on, spanning more than 200 surviving individuals and possessing a collective net worth of about $10 billion, according to Forbes’ list of America’s wealthiest families.
From the Manhattan skyline to the Gulf Coast, the impact of the Rockefeller family is hard to miss. One of the most visible contributions was made by John D. Rockefeller himself, who founded the University of Chicago. Intending to create the first great Baptist university, Rockefeller gave the school $80 million, equal to more than $2 billion in today’s dollars. The monopolist’s son, John D. Rockefeller Jr., comes in a close second, constructing the Rockefeller Center, an expanse of 19 commercial skyscrapers in Midtown Manhattan.
Today, members of the family continue to preside over the so-called robber baron’s philanthropic flagship, the Rockefeller Foundation, which commands more than $3.5 billion. However, the Rockefeller’s single most impactful legacy is not in the realm of philanthropy, but rather the world of business. After Standard Oil was broken up by the federal government, many of its spinoffs become today’s most powerful oil companies, including all or part of ConocoPhillips, BP, Chevron and Exxon-Mobil.
Despite the family’s immense wealth, the Rockefellers no longer stand atop America’s financial hierarchy. At $10 billion, the family ranks 24th on Forbes’ list, a far cry from the heyday of John D. Rockefeller, who became the world’s first billionaire in 1916, a sum equal to $30 billion today, adjusted for inflation. In a sense, this underestimates the oil scion’s wealth. By the time Rockefeller died in 1937, his assets equaled 1.5% of America’s total economic output. To control an equivalent share today would require a net worth of about $340 billion dollars, more than four times that of Bill Gates, currently the world’s richest man.
The Rockefeller clan is as secretive as it is influential, and the majority of the family manages to skirt the public eye. Nonetheless, there are no shortage of Rockefellers whose standalone successes would make even the Gilded Age oil baron proud. The single wealthiest family member is David Rockefeller, who was CEO of Chase National Bank (now JPMorgan Chase) and commands a fortune that Forbes values at $3 billion. Politically well connected, Rockefeller was offered – and declined – roles as Secretary of the Treasury and Chairman of the Federal Reserve. He is perhaps most infamous for helping to precipitate the Iran hostage crisis by encouraging President Jimmy Carter to admit the Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, to the U.S. for hospital treatment.
Many others in the family also made substantial inroads in politics, collectively holding enough posts to rival another clan of American blue bloods, the Kennedys. The biggest political name in the family is that of the deceased Nelson Rockefeller, brother of David, who served as Vice President under Gerald Ford. Another of David’s brothers, Winthrop Aldrich Rockefeller, became the first Republican Governor of Arkansas since reconstruction. His son, Winthrop Paul Rockefeller, continued the family legacy by serving as the state’s Lieutenant Governor until his untimely death in 2006. The only living Rockefeller policymaker is Winthrop Paul’s cousin, John Davison Rockefeller IV, who currently serves as a U.S. Senator from West Virginia.

Play-Doh is a modeling compound used by young children for art and craft projects at home and in school. Composed of flour, water, salt, boric acid, and mineral oil, the product was first manufactured in Cincinnati, Ohio, U.S., as a wallpaper cleaner in the 1930s.[1] When a classroom of children began using the wallpaper cleaner as a modeling compound, the product was reworked and marketed to Cincinnati schools in the mid-1950s. Play-Doh was demonstrated at an educational convention in 1956 and prominent department stores opened retail accounts.[2] Advertisements promoting Play-Doh on influential children's television shows in 1957 furthered the product's sales.[1] Since its launch on the toy market in the mid-1950s, Play-Doh has generated a considerable amount of ancillary merchandise such as The Fun Factory.[3] In 2003, the Toy Industry Association named Play-Doh in its "Century of Toys List".[4]
Frozen is a 2013 American 3D computer-animated musical fantasy–comedy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures.[4] It is the 53rd animated feature in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series. Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale The Snow Queen, the film tells the story of a fearless princess who sets off on an epic journey alongside a rugged iceman, his loyal pet reindeer, and a naive snowman to find her estranged sister, whose icy powers have inadvertently trapped the kingdom in eternal winter.

Esso is an international trade name for ExxonMobil and its related companies. The name is a phonetic version of the initials of the pre-1911 Standard Oil (SO = Esso), and as such became the focus of much litigation and regulatory restriction in the United States. In 1972 it was largely replaced in the U.S. by the Exxon brand after it bought Humble Oil, while Esso remained widely used elsewhere. In most of the world, the Esso brand and the Mobil brand are the primary brand names of ExxonMobil, with the Exxon brand name still in use only in the United States alongside Mobil...
In 1911, Standard Oil was broken up into 34 companies, some of which were named "Standard Oil" and had the rights to that brand in certain states (the other companies had no territorial rights). Standard Oil of New Jersey ("Jersey Standard") had the rights in that state, plus in Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and the District of Columbia. By 1941, it had also acquired the rights in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Louisiana. In those states, it marketed its products under the brand "Esso", the phonetic pronunciation of the letters "S" and "O". It also used the Esso brand in New York and the six New England states, where the Standard Oil Company of New York (Socony - Vacuum, later Socony - Mobil) had the rights, but did not object to the New Jersey company's use of the trademark[citation needed] (the two companies did not merge until November 1999). However, in the other states, the other Standard Oil companies objected and forced Jersey Standard to use other brand names. In most states the company used the trademark Enco ("Energy Company"), and in a few "Humble". The other Standard companies likewise were "Standard" or some variant on that in their home states, and another brand name in other states. Esso ranked 31st among United States corporations in the value of World War II production contracts...
In 1973, Standard Oil of New Jersey renamed itself as the Exxon Corporation, and adopted that trademark throughout the country. It maintained the rights to "Standard" and "Esso" in the states where it held those rights, by a token effort, by selling "Esso Diesel" in those states at stations that sell diesel fuel, thus preventing the trademark from being declared abandoned. It retained the "Esso" brand in Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands until 2008, when it sold its stations there to Total S.A.[4] The Enco brand name was still used on locations in the Midwest until 1977 when they were sold to Cheker Oil Co. (now part of Marathon Petroleum subsidiary Speedway LLC); Exxon continues to have a presence in Southern Ohio today (as it does throughout much of Appalachia in general), though Mobil is the company's primary brand in the Midwest...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_Oil
Standard Oil Co. Inc. was an American oil producing, transporting, refining, and marketing company. Established in 1870 as a corporation in Ohio, it was the largest oil refiner in the world. Its controversial history as one of the world's first and largest multinational corporations ended in 1911, when the United States Supreme Court ruled that Standard was an illegal monopoly.
Standard Oil dominated the oil products market initially through horizontal integration in the refining sector, then, in later years vertical integration; the company was an innovator in the development of the business trust. The Standard Oil trust streamlined production and logistics, lowered costs, and undercut competitors. "Trust-busting" critics accused Standard Oil of using aggressive pricing to destroy competitors and form a monopoly that threatened consumers.
John D. Rockefeller was a founder, chairman and major shareholder. With the dissolution of the Standard Oil trust into 33 smaller companies, Rockefeller became the richest man in the world. Other notable Standard Oil principals include Henry Flagler, developer of the Florida East Coast Railway and resort cities, and Henry H. Rogers, who built the Virginian Railway...

Standard Oil began as an Ohio partnership formed by the well-known industrialist John D. Rockefeller, his brother William Rockefeller, Henry Flagler, chemist Samuel Andrews, silent partner Stephen V. Harkness, and Oliver Burr Jennings, who had married the sister of William Rockefeller's wife. In 1870 Rockefeller incorporated Standard Oil in Ohio. Of the initial 10,000 shares, John D. Rockefeller received 2,667; Harkness received 1,334; William Rockefeller, Flagler, and Andrews received 1,333 each; Jennings received 1,000; and the firm of Rockefeller, Andrews & Flagler received 1,000. Using highly effective tactics, later widely criticized, it absorbed or destroyed most of its competition in Cleveland in less than two months in 1872 and later throughout the northeastern United States...
In 1885, Standard Oil of Ohio moved its headquarters from Cleveland to its permanent headquarters at 26 Broadway in New York City. Concurrently, the trustees of Standard Oil of Ohio chartered the Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey (SOCNJ) to take advantages of New Jersey's more lenient corporate stock ownership laws.

John D. Rockefeller: Biography, Quotes, Business, Education, Facts, Money, Legacy (1998)

Abandoned East Cleveland

The Rockefellers - The Legacy Of History's Richest Man: The American Way
The Rockefellers - The Legacy Of History's Richest Man: The American Way
The Rockefeller legacy began with a 16-year-old bookkeeper in Cleveland, Ohio, whose greatest ambitions were to earn $100,000 and live 100 years.

Drilling for Oil - How Offshore, Shale Drilling & Early Fracking occured in 1956.
Science in Action Series - Drilling for Oil - including using a divining rod! Test drilling, seismograph used to identify oil in sandstone etc, diamond drill bits, anticline and gas cap. Earl Herald interviews Howard G. Vesper, VP of Standard Oil Company of California. And a Kinkajou is shown on the show! Hydraulic fracturing was first started in 1947 but the modern fracturing technique, called horizontal slickwater fracturing, that made the extraction of shale gas economical was first used in 1998 in the Barnett Shale in Texas. The injection of a highly pressurized hydraulic fracturing fluid creates new channels in the rock, which can increase the extraction rates and ultimate recovery of hydrocarbons.

Tells the story of Standard Oil of New Jersey and the Esso brand name from a gas station owner's point of view.
Public domain film from the Prelinger Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied.
The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original).
