BBC Northern Renaissance 01 The Supreme Art
Series in which Joseph Leo Koerner argues that the Renaissance in Northern Europe - more so than its Italian counterpart - laid the foundations of modern art. In the early 15th century, the remarkable oil paintings of Flemish artist Jan Van Eyck transformed a lowly craft into the supreme art and began an image revolution that would change art forever.

Flemish painting flourished from the early 15th century until the 17th century. These painters were invited to work at foreign courts and had a Europe-wide influence. Since the end of the Napoleonic era, Flemish painters had again been contributing

Jan van Eyck (or Johaes de Eyck) (1390 -- 1441) was a Flemish painter active in Bruges and is generally considered one of the most significant Northern European painters of the 15th century. The few surviving records indicate that he was born around 1390, most likely in Maaseik. Outside of works completed with his brother Hubert van Eyck and those ascribed to Hand G —believed to be Jan— of the Turin-Milan Hours illuminated manuscript, only about 23 surviving works are confidently attributed to him, of which ten, including the Ghent altarpiece, are signed and dated.
Little is known of his early life, but his emergence as a collectable painter generally follows his appointment to the court of Philip the Good c. 1425, and from this point his activity in the court is comparatively well documented. Van Eyck had previously served John of Bavaria-Straubing, then ruler of Holland, Hainault and Zeeland. By this time van Eyck had assembled a workshop and was involved in redecorating the Binnenhof palace in The Hague. After John's death in 1425 he moved to Bruges and came to the attention of Philip the Good. He served as both court artist and diplomat and became a senior member of the Tournai painters' guild, where he enjoyed the company of similarly esteemed artists such as Robert Campin and Rogier van der Weyden. Over the following decade van Eyck's reputation and technical ability grew, mostly from his innovative approaches towards the handling and manipulating of oil paint. His revolutionary approach to oil was such that a myth, perpetuated by Giorgio Vasari, arose that he had invented oil painting.
In the earliest significant source on van Eyck, a 1454 biography in Genoese humanist Bartolomeo Facio's De viris illustribus, Jan van Eyck is named "the leading painter" of his day. Facio places him among the best artists of the early 15th century, along with Rogier van der Weyden, Gentile da Fabriano, and Pisanello. It is particularly interesting that Facio shows as much enthusiasm for Netherlandish painters as he does for Italian painters. This text sheds light on aspects of Jan van Eyck's production now lost, citing a bathing scene owned by a prominent Italian, but mistakenly attributing to van Eyck a world map painted by another. Facio records that van Eyck was a learned man, and that he was versed in the classics, particularly Pliny the Elder's work on painting. This is supported by records of an inscription from Ovid's Ars Amatoria, which was on the now-lost original frame of the Arnolfini Portrait, and by the many Latin inscriptions in van Eyck paintings, using the Roman alphabet, then reserved for educated men. Jan van Eyck likely had some knowledge of Latin for his many missions abroad on behalf of the Duke.
Jan van Eyck died in Bruges in 1441 and was buried in the Church of St Donatian, which was later destroyed during the French Revolution.

Immaculate Conception: The famous Flemish painter Jan Van Eyck (d. 1441) captured many thought provoking truths of our holy faith in his painting of the Annunciation. You can look at the painting in close detail here: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6a/Jan_van_Eyck_-_The_Annunciation_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg
This sermon attempts to show how these truths present in this painting are very edifying as well as helpful to us in understanding the need for the Immaculate Conception. She was the only one able to usher in the Incarnation, making it possible to restore all things in Christ. She succeeded where so many others had failed. We also see that by consecrating ourselves to her, we will (i) share in her power over the occult forces that are seeking to dominate the world, and (2) share with her the Lord’s victories, prefigured in the Old Testament. Gothic flourishes in the second half of the XII century and comes till the Renaissance (in Italy until the XV century). It was born in northern France, and little by little was spreading and imposing itself on Romanesque. It is called so by the Goths, as a derogatory term.
The flemish painting is very important. They began to use oil, beginning with the Van Eyck brothers. Great detail. The religious scenes make possible to also represent genre scenes.
First half of XV Century.
Van Eyck brothers: they are Jan and Hubert. Both do the Polyptych of San Bavo of Ghent.
Hubert Van Eyck: we have little about he. He did the Three Maries in the sepulchre, the Calvary and the Adoration of the Mistic Lamb.
Jan Van Eyck: we have more artworks of he. He did the Virgin of the canon Van der Paele, the Virgin of chancellor Rolin, Fountain of Life and Portrait of Giovanni Arnolfini and his wife.
Rogier Van der Weyden: pathetism. His artworks are copied in the rest of the century. He does Deposition, Crucifixion, Adoration of the Magi, the Altar of Our Lady (Miraflores), Saint Luca painting the Virgin, Calvary and Duran Madonna.
Robert Campin: also called Master Flemalle. He does the Triptych of the Annunciation. He also has portraits, like Man with turban.
Petrus Christus: disciple of the Jan Van Eyck, he mixes that influence with the influence of Van der Weyden. He does the Diptych of Berlin, Virgin with the Child, Madonna dell'albero secco, Saint Eloy, and some portraits like Portrait of woman and Head of Christ.
Dierick Bouts: he completed his artistic education with Van der Weyden. He marries in Leuven and stay there till his death. He is a nexus between the Harlem school and Brussels school. Landscape. He does the Polyptych of Leuven, the triptych of the Life of the Virgin, Justice of the Emperor Otto and Last Dinner.
Second half of XV Century.
Hans Memling: he studied in the workshop of Van der Weyden. He had great popularity in XIX century. He does the Tables of the Altar of Lübeck, the triptych of the Adoration of the Magi, Virgin with Child, Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, and Piety.
Hugo van der Goes: he influes the florentine artists. More expressive dinamism. He does the Portinary triptych, the Adoration of the Magi, and the Death of the Virgin.
Justus van Ghent: Giusto di Gand, he does the Communion of the Apostles. I also found a Calvary Triptych, but it is not included in this video.
Gerard David: the last great painter of the flemish school of XV century. Sense of verticality in his virgins, with inexpressive heads. He does the triptych of Baptism of Christ, the Judgement of Cambyses, the Transfiguration of Christ, the Rest in the flight to Egypt, and the Mistic Betrothals.
Geertgen tot Sint Jans: he does his great Nativity, very dark, and John the Baptist in the desert.
Hieronymus van Aeken Bosch: he creates original compositions, strange and fantastic ones, always with moralizing intention. His masterpiece is the Garden of Earthly Delights. Others are Tentations of Saint Anthony Abad and Christ with the cross.
Garden of Earthly Delights: great symbolic content with many interpretations. Left panel is the Earthly Paradise, where you see Adam and Eve with God. All seems pacific but you can see animals being devorated. The ponds and rocks are lairs for the devil. The central panel is the Delights Garden, a false paradise where humanity is, with sins, specially lust, so you can see all kind of sexual relations, heterosexual, homosexual, masturbation and even between animals and plants. The ponds are dirty, they are the waters where the sins take bath. The right panel is Hell. There appear musical instruments, and is not known why. In the upper part is the typical version of Hell, with fire and tortures. In center appear fantastic creatures, and below appear players being tortured by demons.

Immaculate Conception: The famous Flemish painter Jan Van Eyck (d. 1441) captured many thought provoking truths of our holy faith in his painting of the Annunciation. You can look at the painting in close detail here: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6a/Jan_van_Eyck_-_The_Annunciation_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg This sermon attempts to show how these truths present in this painting are very edifying as well as helpful to us in understanding the need for the Immaculate Conception. Please pray three Hail Mary's for this priest. http://reginaprophetarum.org

Flemish painting flourished from the early 15th century until the 17th century. Flanders delivered the leading painters in Northern Europe and attracted many promising young painters from neighbouring countries. These painters were invited to work at foreign courts and had a Europe-wide influence. Since the end of the Napoleonic era, Flemish painters had again been contributing to a reputation that had been set by the Old Masters.[1]
Main article: Early Netherlandish painting
The so-called Flemish "Primitives" were the first to popularize the use of oil paint. Their art has its origins in the miniature painting of the late Gothic period. Chief among them were Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling, Hugo van der Goes, Robert Campin and Rogier van der Weyden.
Renaissance[edit]
Main article: Dutch and Flemish Renaissance painting
From the early 16th century, the Italian Renaissance started to influence the Flemish painters. The result was very different from the typical Italian Renaissance painting. The leading artist was Pieter Brueghel the Elder, who avoided direct Italian influence, unlike the Northern Mannerists.
Baroque[edit]
Main article: Flemish Baroque painting
After the Siege of Antwerp (1584-1585), the Southern Provinces of the Netherlands ("Flanders") remained under Spanish rule and were separated from the independent Dutch Republic. Although many artists fled the religious wars and moved from the Southern Netherlands to the Dutch Republic (see Dutch Golden Age painting), Flemish Baroque painting flourished, especially in the Antwerp school, during the seventeenth century under Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, and Jacob Jordaens.
Decline[edit]
Following the deaths of major artists like Rubens in 1640 and the end of the Eighty Years War in 1648, the cultural significance of Flanders declined.
Revival[edit]
A revival of painting in this region came in the advent of the Belgian Revolution of 1830 and work around that time is often considered Flemish.[2] The painters, who flourished in the aftermath of this patriotic period, are usually referred to as Belgian rather than Flemish. That kingdom comprising Flanders, often influences also more recent artists's categorization (see List of Belgian painters).
Modern Flemish painting[edit]
Although James Ensor stood apart from his contemporaries, this innovator in 19th-century art significantly influenced such 20th-century artists as Paul Klee, Emil Nolde, George Grosz, Alfred Kubin, Wols, Felix Nussbaum, and other expressionist and surrealist painters of the 20th century.[3]
Of the expressionist (i.e. the second) 'Group of Latem', Permeke is generally best known, and for more than four years his face was most prominent on the last banknote of 1,000 Belgian francs — as a 20 Euro bill took over its role. Wikipedia

who sought that the painter was secure financially
and thus had artistic freedom, and could paint "whenever he pleased".
His work comes from the International Gothic style, but he soon eclipsed it, in part through a greater emphasis on naturalism and realism.

Although she concentrates on the personal narratives of individuals, these stories together form an insight into larger social and cultural psychologies.
