Lubec is a town in Washington County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,359 at the 2010 census. Lubec is the easternmost town in the contiguous United States (see Extreme points of the United States) and is the closest continental location to Africa in the United States.
The town is home to Quoddy Head State Park.
Located on a peninsula overlooking an excellent ice-free harbor, the town was first settled about 1775. Originally part of Eastport, it was set off and incorporated on June 21, 1811, and named for Lübeck, Germany. Following the War of 1812, Lubec was the site of considerable smuggling trade in gypsum, although principal industries remained agriculture and fisheries. By 1859, there was a tannery, three gristmills and nine sawmills; by 1886, there were also two shipyards, three boatbuilders and three sailmakers.
From 1897 to 1898, the town was the site of a swindle in the sale of stock in the Electrolytic Marine Salts Company, the brainchild of Reverend Prescott Jernegan and Charles Fisher of Martha's Vineyard. Jernegan claimed to have developed a method of using "accumulators" to get gold from sea water, and bought an old grist mill to turn it into a factory. The scheme attracted an abundance of investors, who were all too eager to funnel money into the company after being promised astronomical returns. In the summer of 1898, work was suspended without explanation at the factory. Jernegan and Smith vanished, and the fraud was gleefully exposed by newspapers across New England.
Independence Day of the United States, also referred to as Fourth of July or July Fourth in the U.S., is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, by the Continental Congress declaring that the thirteen American colonies regarded themselves as a new nation, the United States of America, and no longer part of the British Empire. Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, and political speeches and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States. Independence Day is the National Day of the United States.
During the American Revolution, the legal separation of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence that had been proposed in June by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia declaring the United States independent from Great Britain rule. After voting for independence, Congress turned its attention to the Declaration of Independence, a statement explaining this decision, which had been prepared by a Committee of Five, with Thomas Jefferson as its principal author. Congress debated and revised the wording of the Declaration, finally approving it on July 4. A day earlier, John Adams had written to his wife Abigail:

This was a project my Father Galen Sheehan was working on before his passing. He was very proud to have been from Lubec, Maine and loved the towns history. He wanted to create this project to show the history of the first moving picture the town ever had. My father spent a great deal of time gathering all this information and putting it together for everyone so I hope you all enjoy it!

That year, the town cannon was restored and put on display at the Lubec boat landing where it was fired off during the display. You can see the canon being towed behind one of the fire rescue trucks in the parade to the boat landing.

Scenes of Lubec Maine , West Quoddy lighthouse and Bay of Fundy. Having traveled on many a transatlantic flight from Ireland I have often heard the pilot announce the flight path "We are now just over the Bay of Fundy will be turning south towards Bosten and down into JFK NY". From 30,000 ft the the Bay Of Fundy looked pretty interesting and I said to myself some day I would like to visit that area.So while on a recent fishing trip on East Grandlake, Maine I decided to take a day trip over to Lubec and I was not disappointed. Well worth a visit. Wish I had more time to see more. Cheers.
Have you ever needed rest and peace so badly you didn’t even know it? Simona’s summer was rough, and mine hectic (and spring semester leading up to the summer was brutal). We were both more drained than we realized—and then we got to Quoddy Head State Park near Lubec Maine (home to the easternmost point in the United States), and our souls breathed relief. The sea crashed against the rocks. The forest breathed cool, clean air. We caught glimpses of a sea lion swimming parallel to the shore. The fog made the day even more peaceful. What a gift. === Get caught up on our Maine adventure: Maine, part one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FH24LbUUJd8&list;=UU9-VxRkB7sbxNXH9Dqd6F-w Maine, part two: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjTkumvCfzc&list;=UU9-VxRkB7sbxNXH9Dqd6F-w === CONNECT with m...

Just off the coast of Lubec, Maine, is Campobello Island, New Brunswick, home to Roosevelt Campobello International Park. The park preserves the site of Roosevelt Cottage, a summer home of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his family. The cottage was built by Roosevelt's parents in the 1890s, and the family used the property for several decades. Until 1921, Roosevelt spent most of his summers on the island. It was here in August of that year that Roosevelt was struck with polio, severely limiting his future use of the island. Much of the park remains undeveloped and features a scenic drive, hiking trails, some beaches, picnic areas, and rugged New Brunswick coastline. Storms rage over us,

Lust flows through us.
Over the land the sound

O almighty God, never let
our power fail again,
for it is so endlessly sweet and dear...
