Fukushima worker to get cancer compensation Nuclear & Energy Oct. 20, 2015 - Updated 05:02 UTC-4 Japan's labor ministry says it will provide compensation to a man confirmed to have developed cancer as a result of working at nuclear power plants including Fukushima Daiichi. The man was in his late 30s when he worked from November 2011 to December 2013 at various nuclear plants. They include the Fukushima Daiichi plant that suffered a meltdown in March 2011. The labor ministry says the man discovered he had the illness after quitting his job at Fukushima Daiichi. He applied for compensation granted to workers suffering from work-related illnesses. The ministry decided to accept the application and notified him of the decision on Tuesday. Ministry experts determined that he was likely to have contracted leukemia following cleanup work at Fukushima Daiichi. They found he had been exposed to a total of 19.8 millisieverts of radiation from his work at various plants. He was exposed to 15.7 millisieverts at the Fukushima plant. Compensation is granted if a nuclear power plant worker has been exposed to annual radiation of 5 milliseverts and has developed cancer more than a year afterward. Ministry officials say that so far, 13 nuclear plant workers have been granted compensation for work-related cancer. This is the first such case involving the Fukushima plant. About 45,000 people have been involved in work at the Fukushima plant since the accident. More than 21,000 of them have been exposed to annual radiation levels of 5 millisieverts. Workers with Tokyo Electric Power Company on Tuesday inserted cameras and other measuring instruments into a pipe leading to the inside of the reactor containment vessel. The unit suffered a meltdown in the March 2011 disaster, along with 2 other reactors. The workers found radiation levels in the vessel as high as one sievert per hour. The levels were lower than those measured in the containers of the Number 1 and 2 reactors. They also confirmed that the vessel was filled with water to a height of about 6.4 meters. The operator says Tuesday's survey found no major damage to the facility as far as it could see. TEPCO officials suspect that most of the nuclear fuel in the reactor melted through the core and dropped into the containment vessel. But the workers were not able to see the bottom of the vessel, as what appears to be accumulated dust in the water was in the way of the endoscope. Fukushima decommissioning research facility opens Nuclear & Energy Oct. 20, 2015 - Updated 01:15 UTC-4 A research facility that will aid the process of decommissioning the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant has partially opened in the town of Naraha, near where the plant is located. The Japan Atomic Energy Agency is building a complex in the Fukushima Prefecture town at a cost of some 84 million dollars. The technology developed by the engineers will be used to control robots and confirm procedures are followed in areas where the radiation levels are too high for humans to enter. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Naraha Mayor Yukiei Matsumoto and some 100 others attended the opening ceremony for one of the 2 major buildings in the complex on Monday. With the aid of special equipment and glasses, visitors were able to see a three-dimensional image of the inside of a building housing a nuclear reactor. The visitors were shown where remote-controlled robots essential for the decommissioning work will be developed.
