By Leonard Long, 23rd July, 2015. Deism is the belief that a God made the universe, and then was all hands off. Deism (Natural vs. Revealed Religion in the Enlightenment)
http://www.tomrichey.net
Deism was a religion that was popular with Enlightenment philosophes of the 18th century in Europe and America. In contrast to "revealed" religions, such as Christianity, which rely on divine revelation from religious prophets or sacred texts, Deism is a "natural" religion, relying only on what can be empirically observed in nature to construct one's belief system. The most important thing in life, you suggest, is that people dedicate their lives to be the best they can be.
Being the best a person can be is rightly one of the key aims of this life but, left to their own devices, many people get lost along the way.
Using our human reasoning to come up with the best way of living our lives, leaves us prey to personal whims and preferences.

By Leonard Long, 23rd July, 2015. Deism is the belief that a God made the universe, and then was all hands off. Deists believed in God but denied that he was active in the history of Israel or in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. The Deist debate exploded in Britain around 1700. Deism developed from the "Scientific Revolution" in the 17th century and then became the philosophical basis of Critical Liberal Theology, which broke the tie between Western academic theology and Christian theism. Deism was the isthmus between the continents of theism and atheism and developed into one-way traffic from theism to atheism during the 18th century. However, in 2005 Antony Flew, probably the most eminent atheist philosopher of the 20th century, converted from atheism to deism before his death. Is this the beginning of the reversal of flow across the isthmus of deism?
Leonard Long provides an overview of the deist debate in Britain and show its relevance to our current situation. It should help us to understand our history and the forces that have affected our culture.

In this short lecture, I contrast the revealed religion of Christianity vs. the natural religion of Deism.
This video is targeted mainly toward students taking AP US History and/or AP European History. Both courses require students to have a working knowledge of the foundations of Deist thought. I am aware that other videos out there may go more in depth and I'm okay with that.

CH argument:
There is an infinite possibility of "god-assertions" (Ra, Jehova, Huitzlopochtli, etc. up to the "personal god") that cannot be disproven. Atheists however do not deny those gods existence, which is logically impossible, they simply say there is no empirical evidence for such an assertion.
Deism, while being empirically not necessary -science offers better explanations- is also not Theism: the argument from design does not imply (and cannot) the Christian god or any interventionist god.
Further, the spiritual language of many scientists does not necessarily mean they believe in god.
Interesting for those who want to learn how to argue consistently:

The goal of life is to be happy and to feel good about oneself, and good people will go to heaven when they die. Some who profess this creed also profess to be Christian.
Muslims believe that there is a higher power, Almighty Allah, who knows better than we do how life should be lived.
By the way, before we continue, we need to understand that Allah is simply an Arabic word which means God. Christians in the Middle East use the word Allah as much as Muslims do. Allah is not some strange, special god of the Muslims.
Muslims believe that from the beginning of time God has guided human beings. After all, it was He who created the earth and everything in it, so who better than He to tell His creation how to live?
To use a trivial comparison, if we buy a vacuum cleaner we read the manufacturer's instructions before we use it. The manufacturer knows everything about the vacuum cleaner, so we don't invent our own operating instructions for its use.
In the same way, Allah is the maker of the heavens and the earth and all that is in it, so He it is who writes the operating instructions for His creation.
