How did Spain recover from the 2004 terror attacks?

One of the darkest days in recent Spanish history was March 11, 2004, when Islamists detonated bombs on three Madrid commuter trains, killing 191 people and wounding over a thousand others.

Almost twelve years later, Spanish society seems to have found proactive ways to empower itself and overcome the collective trauma. The way that both Spanish authorities and wider civil society dealt with the aftermath of the terror attacks is now considered as a model to be followed. Valérie Labonne and Sarah Morris tell us more.

A programme prepared by Patrick Lovett and Elom Marcel Toble.
