Ida Bell Wells-Barnett (July 16, 1862 – March 25, 1931) was an African American journalist, newspaper editor and, with her husband, newspaper owner Ferdinand L. Barnett, an early leader in the civil rights movement. She documented lynching in the United States, showing how it was often a way to control or punish blacks who competed with whites. She was active in the women's rights and the women's suffrage movement, establishing several notable women's organizations. Wells was a skilled and persuasive rhetorician, and traveled internationally on lecture tours.
Ida B. Wells was born in Holly Springs, Mississippi in 1862, just before President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Her father James Wells was a carpenter and her mother was Elizabeth "Lizzie" Warrenton Wells. Both parents were enslaved until freed under the Proclamation, one year after she was born.
Ida’s father James was a master at carpentry and known as a "race man", someone who worked for the advancement of blacks. He was very interested in politics, and was a member of the Loyal League. He attended public speeches and campaigned for local black candidates, but he never ran for office. Her mother Elizabeth was a cook for the Bolling household before her death from yellow fever. She was a religious woman who was very strict with her children. Wells' parents took their children's education very seriously. They wanted their children to take advantage of having the opportunity to be educated and attend school.

On the way to California
See my sister Carolina
Looking out on South Dakota
At a field of gladiolas
Gonna sell it in the summer
leave behind the floods and winters
Letting go of what they suffered
Let it fall away like rain across the plains
From a payphone on a corner
Making plans for our departure
I could wish we’d rush right over
Looking back over my shoulder
Cold December weather
Not keeping us together
It’s New Years Eve forever
We’re flying down the turnpike in the night
Looking out to the horizon
Anyone could see the swelling of your heart
All the lights that shine before you
Looks so helpless, and so far to see
Someone’s always running faster
Towards the anchor that you need
You forget again and ask her
Why the light, it had to leave
The wind pulls me around
and everything it touches turns weak
An antique or an eyelash stuck to your cheek
The paper thin skin of a crowd chasing you
Down a long and dead-end trail
With a guilt no alibi can curtail
The world is held together by the wind
That blows through Gena Rowland's hair
Land ahoy I fill my weak lungs with this joy
Dizzy on the deck I hope I last until we land
With an envelope burning a hole in my hand
Bearing the names of the winners who walked away
From the games that the slaves love to play
To replace the air and the sea
Leaving you no way to fly to me
The world is held together by the wind
That blows through Gena Rowland's hair
Through the window
the warm summer air does a two-step
I wish there was some way I could keep it
And clear away the Mission Street in my head that
Keeps this watery weariness in our bed and
Sets up more windmills that I'll waste my time missing
When it should just be your lips that I'm kissing
Don't tell me that you don't hear
The clock ticking on the shelf by our bed it's near
There's a light turning green just like fear
There's a light that turns green
and leaves us without a prayer
The world is held together by the wind
It seems like a lifetime since I saw you
Lover lover I’ve been away too long
When I see lovers holding hands and sighing
I hang my head for shame of doing wrong
Bus wheels spinning, song birds singing break my heart
Take me back to old remembered days
Remind me of the times we spent together
Times before we went our separate ways
I wish I was a fool for you again
I wish I was a fool for you again
I wish I was a fool for you again
I’m sorry for the things I’ve said, the things I’ve done
I’m sorry for the restless thief I’ve been
Please don’t make me pay for my deceiving heart
Just turn up your lamp and let me in
I wish I was a fool for you again
I wish I was a fool for you again
I wish I was a fool for you again
I wish I was a fool for you again
I wish I was a fool for you again
I wish I was a fool for you again
I wish I was a fool for you again
I wish I was a fool for you again
I wish I was a fool for you again
I wish I was a fool for you again
From day one I warned you
there's no love for free
the force of your feelings
is no guarantee
that I won't get restless
and that I won't leave but you
you would not believe me
the fact that I cheated
the fact that I strayed
is nobody business
I thought you should know anyway
that I wasn't so lonely
I wasn't so shy
I went out I had a good time
now I would have kept this
between you and me
but I saw you wearing my heart
on your booksleeve
why me why not some girl
who might want these things
like qualified flattery
in this big city of celebrities
where secrets of lovers are currency
exposing the private for press and money
like you needed any
you said I was crazy for leaving you then
back where you started with all of your yes friends
while you were in London
well I was just fine
I went out and fucked an old firend of mine
Easier to find a great pretender
Easier to lie
Thank you for your kind letter
Thank you for your kind letter
It's better just to know than find out later
It's better just to hide
Honesty always matters
Honesty always matters
Oh this fallen arrow
Never found its way to your heart
I shot it with all I had left
It was a rocket in the sky until it tumbled to the ground
It was a rocket in the sky until it fell
Wouldn't take you more than ten small paces
Wouldn't take you less
Stop by when you're feeling better
Stop by when you're feeling better
Oh this fallen arrow
Never found its way to your heart
I shot it with all I had left
It was a rocket in the sky until it tumbled to the ground
It was a rocket in the sky until it fell
It was a rocket in the sky until it tumbled to the ground
Always more than I can catch inside this jar
Lighting up the night sky
Flicker in your eye
Ladybugs crawl across your hand
In plain sight, broad daylight
I don't mind
But in the dark
Invisible and beautiful
Then gone again
When you've forgotten them
They're back again
On and off
On and off
On and off
don't do it again
don't lose your head too quickly
you could pick up the phone
don't leave me all alone
i won't look for the worst
before i've even heard what you're trying to say
but words just get in the way
i know that it's late
we're much too tired to make sense
but i'll hold you up
if i get lost along the way to meet you
if i'm more than a little late
if i get caught up in circles chasing my own tail
if i trip up and fail you
if i let you down
if i let you down
i can see that injury that accompanies the passage of you
i can try to rationalize the accumulation of fear
and the dreams that draw a song in pursuit of the end of
time
and the grace that illuminates the past
if i let you down
if i let you down
in the night the city's quiet
from the rooftop we can see the moon rise high above the
clouds
just enough light to see our faces give expression to the
words we thought but didn't speak
and then you asked me a question that i won't forget
even if i spend my life trying to live up to what it
means
if i let you down
if i let you down
don't let it break down
don't let it break down
what is this weariness that waits for you shrug
you press your ankle against my arm
this is the pressure that i love
you always recommended it
could be the door
could be the phone
for any intent or purpose
your not home
your up against the wall
no real impression like breath on glass
ive got the apple in me too
people are bluer then they ever imagined they might be
looking through the boxes in the basement
who were you then
your restlessness is emptier
then the room we used to live in
here's wishing you the best
Get out of bed or you'll sleep the whole day away
Realize I'm so in love with you
Put up your hair and I'll put on my very best shoes
We'll walk outside and see stars light up the sky
When I'm with you I dont care wherever we go
Sitting in the office
Sitting in your chair
The temporary positions
Friends that disappear
Call a toll-free number
Voicemail message clear
You might need some assistance
Sorry, no one's there
You said
You said
You caught me
In the middle of a bad time again
Meaning you are living
Leaving you alive
Like everybody else
In the middle of a bad time
Who's that call waiting
On the telephone line
And new friends can get fragile
Scrambling for time with you
A bad time
Bad time
In the middle of a bad time
How long I've been waiting
And collecting calls
Yeah don't you want to know
You got lots of messages from
All over town
Some of them know you
But most of them are just business as usual
You said
You said
You caught me
In the middle of a bad time
What's the point of trying
To begin again
Or even finding out
In the middle of a bad time
Who gonna help you
When the elevator door jams
When all you've got are contracts
Couldn't give a damn
About you
A bad time
Bad time
A sullen spent seven years
Scraping love from the dust that covers your
fingerprints
I sit around and watch the splintering
Of a trust that I never seemed to have a hand in
Well maybe it's true I'm barely there
So easily mistaken for your favorite chair
Like a perfect and graceful fading
Well I thank you
For giving me nothing
'cause who could be a witness
Who could have the patience
You like to sit there in it
Privileged and indifferent
You never come around to see my side
So i don't get to tell you that I'm doing fine
Monday comes, and Monday goes
You're my faithful, stand-by no show
'cause who could tell the story
Sit down and read it to me
Who'd reveal their memories
Be the first to say
Yeah I do see you when you're looking down
Pages scattered on the ground
You're the one who tore them out
You're the one who tore them out
Yeah I do see you
Right through
And it feels too soon to leave you
The sun was red and the sky was blue
And I went rowing on the road to ruin
How do you make a day like that?
How do you make it real?
The geese were making an evening sound
And I went raving down the crazy paving
How do you make a day like that?
How do you make it real?
And every day is just a joy to hold
The needle is new and the patterns are old
How do you make a game like that?
How do you make it real?
The sun was red and the sky was blue
And I went rowing on the road to ruin
How do you make a day like that?
I know where I will find you
In the ocean deep and blue
We know every dream is true
I know everytime you leave
The picture of you... my mind
I feel I'm drowning in your heart
There a privasea oh no
To find the sea of love
There a privasea oh no
To find the sea of love
You know I'm waiting for you there
You are somewhere in my lands
And you can find me deep and wait
Find me deeper in your heart
You are deep inside of me
Together we'll... sea
And I belong to you
There a privasea oh no
To find the sea of love
There a privasea oh no
To find the sea of love
You know I am waiting for you there
Find the sea of love
Come to dinner with me
We'll walk down the main street all dressed up
We'll make time for coffee
I know the caffiene makes you sad
Just once, won't you do it for me?
Up in heaven, you're a shoe-in
If you open up your heart to me
Let's go driving tonight
We'll take Al's Comet, he'll never know
Top it out on 95
I know my driving makes you mad
Just once, won't you do it for me?
Up in heaven, you're a shoe-in
Like glass shattering in a clean break
this is the art of a mistake
and we were like kids with a shotgun
blowing up words till there were none
and maybe i'm too young
i thought that i could destroy it
aimed shot and fired
missed the target
but you keep coming back
hand me fractured words through the lense of time
and some things cant be burned
on slow days
thoughts free to wonder
over to west hurley
and down past ashokan
the reservoir
and georgia waving
from the back of a car
sis holds your hand
she holds it so tightly
she digs in her fingernails
and later that night
she whispers a name
she says it aloud
for the last time
cutting that milkweed
bending down low
in her navy blue dress
I'll never know
which one I resemble the best
it's hard to be in love with a celebrity. you cry cos you never gonna met em'.
and usely they are much older than you.it's hard to be in love with a celebrity
it's hard to be in love with a celebrity. you cry cos you never gonna met em'.

celebrity's come and go
they are alwayd on a tv show
when you see those pretty faces
you soon will be at different places
you dream yourself away
not only for a day
they stay on your mind
it's hard to be in love with a celebrity. you cry cos you never gonna met em'.
and usely they are much older than you.it's hard to be in love with a celebrity
celebrity's are hard to find
but they will always stay on your mind

from the start
it will break your heart
it's hard to be in love with a celebrity. you cry cos you never gonna met em'.

it's hard to be in love with a celebrity. you cry cos you never gonna met em'.

it's hard to be in love with a celebrity. you cry cos you never gonna met em'.
Keeping it to yourself
Away from the ones who could help
Leaving only your reflection of
The anger that you could not claim
Drowned in the rising tide
Scared of the over-ride
Was it only your reflection up the road
Of the turning sky?
And you never saw it come
Take it away
And you never saw it come
Taking it away
And you never saw it come
Take it away
And you never saw it come
Take it away
And you never saw it come
Dreaming of what was lost
Forgetting about the cost
Just as flawless, the perfection
Of the memory of beautiful former love
Harder than any psalm
Waiting for the morning sun
Seeing only your reflection
Of the hunger that you could not brave
Seeing only your reflection of
The wonder that you could not name
And you never saw it come
Take it away
And you never saw it come
Taking it away
And you never saw it come
Take it away
And you never saw it come
Take it away
Poor dumb canary
You finally threw yourself in a glass
Treated you so badly
Gave you everything that you wanted
Poor dumb bird
You sang a song or two
You did it better than anyone else
They took it far as they could
They took it into their hands and it got to your gut
Poor dumb bird
You think you made it stop,
You think you made it good,
You think you saved your soul,
You can watch from your box as they serve up what's
left of your beak
Poor dumb bird
The sun can rise if it wants,
The rain can fall if it wants,
The fire can strike where it likes
But when one good bird chooses to fly the whole sky
starts to look better
Now that you've gone and lit up the sky And gone and
left it burning
There's no one left to do your work Though they're
already starting to try
Many sweet song that was left to come will stay on the
tip of your tongue
Many sweet song that was left to come will stay on the
tip of your tongue
After the first time we kissed
I drove for an hour in the wrong direction
Frozen in the winter wind
Where nothing could ever begin
I saw you
You were shining like a brand new sun
Shining starlight
For me
For you and me, my love
Pass a junkyard on the left
Time to catch my breath
Almost to the out-of-state line
Oh, it’ll be better
Saw a car bruning down on the side of the highway
ambulance came but I couldn't tell if it got there on
time
lights all a'flashin i could see them through the rear
view mirror
iI watched them disappear
if you gimme a ride i can take you higher
if you gimme a ride i'll do the same for you
some time
people come and go
but they fit just like pieces of puzzles
pieces of troubles
lovers come
lovers move on
I looked for you in the rubble
but i couldn't find you
I can't seem to let you go
this is where we cross that line
this is where we lost our time
abondon love every time
for something more
if you gimme a ride i can take you higher
if you gimme a ride i'll do the same for you
Pulling back the rain is wet
We’re still inside it all
And what’s yours in the morning
By the night it all could be gone
You sound so good to me
And I have to say
I’m glad it wasn’t me
Who had to walk away
Memory is heavy when you have to write
The pictures that are scattered
They swell up in your eyes
And how much becomes yours
What can you throw away
All this it matters on moving day
sweeping out from under the bed
Afraid of what you’ll find
Looking out windows for the last time
See past that face in front of you
And lift your head
This doesn't have to end,
But it should.
We used to help each other out,
Now it doesn't feel good.
So go back to your room
And hide with your cellophane.
All twisted up in two
Like Caliban you've seen it all
Without language to use.
The phonecalls stopped,
The letters, too.
Maybe we passed on the street,
Pretended we never knew.
It might be worth the effort
But we don't have the time
Or the will to intrude.
Sooner or later you have to choose
Between one set of lies and another.
It's nothing new.
But like it or not,
There's part of me in you.
I don't know if I'll ever see you again
And there's one thing I'll never understand.
It's like the words that we said
Rolled over to play dead
And we kissed them goodbye
i see you in the car in the night with your lights on
all running the cold towards the dark and the trees
there's something pulling me back under your covers
but a woman who knows better sees that it's time to
leave
there's nothing more that i could give to the center
of a place that has never stood still
there's not enough room here and there's never enough
poison
to kill the way that i really feel
but when i get home i find you
begging and scratching for more
don't force me to be cruel
find your own way to the door
'cause you have to recognize that i am justified
and i, i can break you down
you asked for this, you don't have the guts to get over
and i'm so tired that's the price of your whys
and i don't mind telling you that you made me cry too
i was won like a prize
and you don't have the guts just to tell me the truth
so i leave you in the car in the night with your lights
all running the cold past the dark and the trees
is this what you wanted, evidence of everything
Summer snapped in half
and half flippin' coffee creamers.
Twenty times, that's a good sign,
like a four-leaf clover.
Downtown
was filled with the sounds
of the full and the part time losers.
And when we stepped up to the bar,
you asked for a cigarette and
and the years just melted away right then
And I saw all the ways that we've changed
and the decisions that we made.
And I wasn't hurt or afraid.
Some skin holds night in.
Some gifts go unrequited.
I dreamed I was holding my breath.
Go down again
till I'm breathing in water and
breaking like the day,
did time take its toll did it cost too much
did it cost all the sweetness
that was the best time that you ever had
that slipped so soon from the palm of your hand
the times when you stood tall
now you're crawling with a backwards glance so strong
that you can't believe it at all
you thought that you lost such a solid love
the best friend that ever had
because the world is upside down
with too many moments you could not keep
and the places that you saw you speak
you don1t know how to see this through
but what did you miss
in the telling of all this
and how could you guess
down on your back
all your secrets collide
your rise and shine
lost in your world
just killing time
nobody knows
the gift gets so lost
behind the lies
get to the point
before you die
light coming down
to the ground
time doesn't hold up
it gets folded in your eyes
that's why you try
to write through the day
and all the night
crushed by the joy
that seeps from this site
that pulls you in
you try again
light coming down
looking out from nowhere
taking in a view
I see an endless highway
between me and you
nothing is forever
you could spend a lifetime learning that
gather your defenses
they'll always leave you alone
playng back the pictures
I can almost taste it now
memory is so sure
but is never quite what it was
everything's distorted
when you're looking through the glass
pictures change their color
impressions they always pass
markers are all scattering light
pulling shadows
falling on your eyes
we were carrying the corpse
dropped it in a well
tried to salvage something
even though we'd landed in hell
and you creep so silently
in and out of memory
so take another shot before you bend to say goodbye
after all is said and done
you won't take it right
if after all is said
its the only thing on your mind
after all is said
Fixing an eye on the hopeful
In a heartless room you'll be done soon
The snow is falling down
And the whole damn town is covered with white
It's obvious that trust is the catch and the magnet
That could pull you through this braille night
Where nothing's free and you just can't see
How to sacrifice what you need to be
You can't shake this silence still
In your heart you're just not there
You're a thousand miles from here
You just want to disappear
Winter went out with a whimper
Such a lonely sound to try to get around
Imagine yourself as a little kid
In your parents arms and then it's gone
You step to the mic almost petrified
'cause everything you feel is in your eyes
You cannot hide but you're haunted
By the early frost
By the ones you've lost
Beauty shines so bright
Vanishes from sight
Wrap yourself in the night
Love with all your might
You can't shake this silence still
In your heart you're just not there
You're a thousand miles from here
You just want to disappear
You're a thousand miles away
You're a thousand miles away
You're a thousand miles away
You're a thousand miles away
Good dog here's a biscuit
Dont bite you dont need it
With your siilky hair and tender body
posing up there you beg so nicely
Half gone from deprivation
Not a magic wand elimination
But good dog now you did it
didnt bite that dangling biscuit
its a you win situation
and a form of degradation
you're half gone from deprivation
Not a magic wand elimination
It seems like a lifetime since I saw you

i hear you
put on your coat and your hat and your gloves
and go walking
take one hand out of your glove on the street
when you're walking
look straight ahead
don't turn around when you're walking nothing can hurt
you now
don't turn around when you're walking away
your love isn't gone
its just moved on
its inside you now
it feels so heavy
your love isnt gone
its just moved on
its inside you now
Can't get a good night's sleep
It's been like this for weeks
Kissing whiskey and TV
Won't cure my malady
Driving home in your car
Listening to the Secret Stars
Can't believe how great they are
Would you say you love me
Say you love me
Hold back again
Don't deny
They always want you to
Pull the ship from out of the sky
Give out some more
It's such a steal
They only want you to
Market the way that you feel
You'll never know
How much I care
I notice the way that you look at me
When you're not there
Still having fun
In for the long run
Do you remember
Smashing up a bottle
Trying to be rudie
In a tourist town
We were so aimless
But so filled with purpose
And I got so nervous
On your wedding day
It's great to see you now
To see your eyes
You know that they're
So clear and strong
And when you look into mine
Do you still see me the same
I can still see us everywhere I look
Keeping it to yourself
Away from the ones who could help
Leaving only your reflection of
The anger that you could not claim
Drowned in the rising tide
Scared of the over-ride
Was it only your reflection up the road
Of the turning sky?
And you never saw it come
Take it away
And you never saw it come
Taking it away
And you never saw it come
Take it away
And you never saw it come
Take it away
And you never saw it come
Dreaming of what was lost
Forgetting about the cost
Just as flawless, the perfection
Of the memory of beautiful former love
Harder than any psalm
Waiting for the morning sun
Seeing only your reflection
Of the hunger that you could not brave
Seeing only your reflection of
The wonder that you could not name
And you never saw it come
Take it away
And you never saw it come
Taking it away
And you never saw it come
Take it away
And you never saw it come
Take it away
And you never saw it come
look at me
am i still the one you wanted me to be
when we were talking
did i hear you say
that you still love me
what if we could do it all again
would you still look right through me then
what if you could make another life
would you still have me by your side
look at me
everything was clear i wanted you to see
but dont answer with a word
why pick a fight or lie awake all night doubting
the worst of what you might do is half as bad as what ive done
the worst of what we might do is half as bad as what we've done
man in mind
might rob you blind
but you'll like the ride
you can hide
but im right by your side
i will try to be kind
i will try to be kind
but im taking only what i want
i want to bury my body
and i wont hurt your heart
dont build around me
cause ill only tear it down
dont build around me ill only tear it down
man in mind
might rob you blind
but you like the ride
you can hide but im right by your side
i will try to be kind
i will try to be kind
Fixing an eye on the hopeful
In a heartless room you'll be done soon
The snow is falling down
And the whole damn town is covered with white
It's obvious that trust is the catch and the magnet
That could pull you through this braille night
Where nothing's free and you just can't see
How to sacrifice what you need to be
You can't shake this silence still
In your heart you're just not there
You're a thousand miles from here
You just want to disappear
Winter went out with a whimper
Such a lonely sound to try to get around
Imagine yourself as a little kid
In your parents arms and then it's gone
You step to the mic almost petrified
'cause everything you feel is in your eyes
You cannot hide but you're haunted
By the early frost
By the ones you've lost
Beauty shines so bright
Vanishes from sight
Wrap yourself in the night
Love with all your might
You can't shake this silence still
In your heart you're just not there
You're a thousand miles from here
You just want to disappear
You're a thousand miles away
You're a thousand miles away
You're a thousand miles away
I'm not watching anyone
or listening for a sign
we all arrived too late to the party
our friends had all gone home
the listless follow up
a lexicon of days
that we created
heaven is filled
with models and pills
and all the pretty things
that make you kill
there's chances everywhere
you hear it everyday
they're asking for the best of the belated
I went to find you then
"we'll make a great escape
if nothing ever runs the way we planned it"
heaven is filled
with models and pills
and all the pretty things
Poor dumb canary
You finally threw yourself in a glass
Treated you so badly
Gave you everything that you wanted
Poor dumb bird
You sang a song or two
You did it better than anyone else
They took it far as they could
They took it into their hands and it got to your gut
Poor dumb bird
You think you made it stop,
You think you made it good,
You think you saved your soul,
You can watch from your box as they serve up what's
left of your beak
Poor dumb bird
The sun can rise if it wants,
The rain can fall if it wants,
The fire can strike where it likes
But when one good bird chooses to fly the whole sky
starts to look better
Now that you've gone and lit up the sky And gone and
left it burning
There's no one left to do your work Though they're
already starting to try
Many sweet song that was left to come will stay on the
tip of your tongue
Many sweet song that was left to come will stay on the
why do I fell like I'm almost old
I didn't want to ever let you down
once we could talk about anything
you started moving out
out of my reach
and I never felt so alone like that before
and I waited for you to call
and tell me to be strong
but you got so cold
or bold enough to turn to my tuning face
and everytime you would look at me that way
I couldn't speak
I couldn't say anything
I watch the leaves change in the fall
I didnt notice this before
you walked away when I wanted you then
to come and take me out
maybe we could try again
cause there were still things tha I wanted to say
but I was so young
It's in your failures
in your crooked teeth
they betray your glamour
they're what I believe but
you sold secrets
all that says to me
is you have an ego
I don't want to feed
pale and they're dirty an grey
excuses that you sent my way
the last thing that you heard me say
was I am not flattered
the selling of secrets
the falling of leaves
these mysteries of science
unraveled for me
but we had to try
it defy gravity
you still find it too hard
to admit defeat
so tell me what is worth to you
I risked opening myself to you
you're so far from who I knew
and the way that I loved you
You wake to the sound of the night crashing down
Sucked out of dream
Face to face with your makers
And the facts of a fall
And your faith seems so small
There's an ocean of glass
And you're moving above it
Stretching out in the sky
And your body is weightless
You're an acrobat
No one can deny it
Now we have to try to do all we can
To find you
You know that he's gone with the sun through your window
Everyday is a world that you'd never choose to visit
No one wants to cry or say their goodbyes
Looking in dreams for you
After you gave up on the world
For the first time I understood
Your words were as good to me as gold
But it's all getting old already
I care about what you see
Even though you try to take the best of me apart
And punish me for trying
I watched you hit the ground
With the luckiest smile around
With your stupid guile and your chain
I couldn't have missed you hailing cabs in the rain
I care about what you see
Even though you try to take the best of me apart
And punish me trying
Everyday the nausea hits you
You face the mirror
Wonder if you'll ever get out of here
We'll never get past the past
Staring a hole through the bottom of a dirty shot glass
I listen well to your rage
And search your face for a spark
The sun burns out his eyes
The vampire isn't suprised
He was waiting there all night
To be the first one to notice the dawn
Don't give it the weight
When you're so far out of it
You're so far out of it
I want to notice
All the changes as they come
I want the patience
Of a mother
No cleverness could make that appeal
Song less like a prayer
i could watch you sleep for hours
without noticing that it's getting really late
but last night i just wanted to wake you up
hear the city hum underneath the pink moonlight
well i drove all night to see you
and i beat the sun, but not by very much
the radiator was hissing in the kitchen
Tiger dare
tiger fall
tiger lose it all
fortune laughs
behind our backs
second chance or not
barring any unforeseen pictures in our heads
that could freeze us in our tracks
and bring this sweet unraveling
to an early end
there will be a day
undecided unaligned
under your own gun
scared to ride
scared to run
when the day comes
barring any unforesees pictures in our heads
that could freeze us in our tracks
and bring this sweet unraveling
to an early end
you'll let this fast flying train on its tornado track
shoot you someplace
there's a bird on the land
there's a bird on the bay
there's a sun in the sky
but it won't go away
and the clock on the wall says
remeber all that you've said
don't think of the dangers
you could have avoided if only he'd stayed
oh this water is making my death
every season stealing my man from my bed
and this winter should carry him through
to the next
Did we give away too much or was it right?
I just wanna go back home and hold you tight
I can't face another crowd and feel this way
Oh no, oh no
I'm falling into every little trap that I can find
Reading too much into every single sign
I can't face you with the others all around
Oh no, oh no
I need some time to breathe
I can't fix what's wrong
Well the world I see is only two lanes wide
From this midnight van to Georgia that we ride
And the toll booths become markers of the time
Oh no, oh no
We come and go so fast
its not yours but you took it away
great ideas waiting there for someone
to get into and carry them away
stealing is easy
if you're good then no one sees you
sees you do it
the victim's always busy
in another part of town
and i guess i just can't see
how you can sleep
when you go to sleep
I can't say
cause you're hidden from me now
accountable to no one
you made a killing
in your borrowed bargain clothes
when you took off running
it seemed just like you never even noticed what you'd
Pulling back the rain is wet
We’re still inside it all
And what’s yours in the morning
By the night it all could be gone
You sound so good to me
And I have to say
I’m glad it wasn’t me
Who had to walk away
Memory is heavy when you have to write
The pictures that are scattered
They swell up in your eyes
And how much becomes yours
What can you throw away
All this it matters on moving day
sweeping out from under the bed
Afraid of what you’ll find
Looking out windows for the last time
See past that face in front of you
And lift your head
Leave the saddest room
Stripped as you are you come to me
I wont deny you anything
while you need it
when you need it
i'm a faucet
when its hard to face the fear
that i wont find you
anywhere
will you find me
recognise me
stay inside me
your the velvet in my mouth
you i cannot be without
you make it so good
make it so good
love is so good
I see you in the car in the night with your lights on
I run in the cold past the dark and the trees
there's something pulling me back under your covers
but a woman who knows better sees that its time to
leave
there's nothing more I can give
to the center of a place that has never stood still
there's not enough room here
and there's never enough poison to kill
the way that I really feel
and when I get home I find you
begging and scratching for more
don't force me to be cruel
find your own way to the door
you have to recognize that I am justified
and I can break you down
you asked for this
you don't have the guts to get over
and I am so tired that's the price of your wiles
and I don't mind telling you that you made me cry too
I was won like a prize
and you don't have the guts just to tell me the truth
I'll leave you in the car in the night with your lights
I run in the cold past the dark and the trees
is this what you wanted?
evidence of everything I will plead guilty
The sun was red and the sky was blue
And I went rowing on the road to ruin
How do you make a day like that?
How do you make it real?
The geese were making an evening sound
And I went raving down the crazy paving
How do you make a day like that?
How do you make it real?
And every day is just a joy to hold
The needle is new and the patterns are old
How do you make a game like that?
How do you make it real?
The sun was red and the sky was blue
And I went rowing on the road to ruin
How do you make a day like that?
How do you make it feel?
on slow days
thoughts free to wonder
over to west hurley
and down past ashokan
the reservoir
and georgia waving
from the back of a car
sis holds your hand
she holds it so tightly
she digs in her fingernails
and later that night
she whispers a name
she says it aloud
for the last time
cutting that milkweed
bending down low
in her navy blue dress
I'll never know
which one I resemble the best
take some time out to remember
what you kept and gave away
when you came into my life
did you stop
to think twice
little things pile up and turn into bigger things
and i want you to notice (this)
and i want you to try
don't cut me off
don't cut it out
don't give away
what you can live without
don't let it sit
just spit it out
don't hide yourself
where no one can find you
don't hesitate
just let me know
don't keep it all to yourself
i'll try to understand you
don't hesitate
just let me know
don't keep it all to yourself
i'll try to understand
Some days are heavy and some days are mean
Some days fall somewhere in between
Today I would like to tear you apart at the seams
Like taking a plane its the worst kind of day
Holding your breath in the sky
You should never write a letter that high
Speaking my mind is not what I do best
But I have to get this all off my chest
Open this window and hope these words will fly
But hey what does it matter now?
Turning back pages is not something time will allow
and wait I never got to say
You were digging into me
and then you just got away
How can you say that I'm wasting your time
After all the years I have spent trying
to fill up the whole that you left
Sitting here in my heart
So I'm talking it back
I'm making it mine
looking out from nowhere
taking in a view
I see an endless highway
between me and you
nothing is forever
you could spend a lifetime learning that
gather your defenses
they'll always leave you alone
playng back the pictures
I can almost taste it now
memory is so sure
but is never quite what it was
everything's distorted
when you're looking through the glass
pictures change their color
impressions they always pass
markers are all scattering light
pulling shadows
falling on your eyes
we were carrying the corpse
dropped it in a well
tried to salvage something
even though we'd landed in hell
and you creep so silently
in and out of memory
so take another shot before you bend to say goodbye
after all is said and done
you won't take it right
if after all is said
its the only thing on your mind
after all is said
its the only
You want to have a party alright
everyone's invited tonight
sweetcake and lots of dancing for our friends
costumes cakes lets celebrate don't be late
dollface is on the telephone again
her mouth never opens her eyes never close
she throws the best ones we always have fun
nobody ever wants to leave her house
we all arrived too early
the cakes not done
here's my favorite records
lets have fun ohh ah oh yeah
nobody was dancing
didn't know how
dollface started crying
she looked so sad
dollface is hiding upstairs in the bedroom
she doesn't listen to anyone
next time the people all take dancing lessons
nobody ever wants to leave her house
what is this weariness that waits for you shrug
you press your ankle against my arm
this is the pressure that i love
you always recommended it
could be the door
could be the phone
for any intent or purpose
your not home
your up against the wall
no real impression like breath on glass
ive got the apple in me too
people are bluer then they ever imagined they might be
looking through the boxes in the basement
who were you then
your restlessness is emptier
then the room we used to live in
here's wishing you the best
the rest is always better left unsaid
