Kakuei Tanaka(田中 角栄 or 田中 角榮,Tanaka Kakuei?, 4 May 1918 – 16 December 1993) was a Japanese politician and the 64th and 65th Prime Minister of Japan from 7 July 1972 to 22 December 1972 and from 22 December 1972 to 9 December 1974 respectively. He was also the most influential member of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party until the mid-1980s, when he fell from power after a long series of scandals, leading him to be described as "that paragon of post-war corruption."
Tanaka, nicknamed Kaku-san, was known as the "Shadow Shogun" (闇将軍 Yami-shōgun. literally, "Shadow Shogun" or "Shogun of Darkness").
His political-economic direction is called construction state(土建国家,Doken Kokka?).
Tanaka was born into a rural family with seven children in Nishiyama, Niigata Prefecture. His father was involved with a disastrous venture to start Niigata's first dairy farm, and so the family scraped by in abject poverty. Kakuei left school after the equivalent of the eighth grade and went to work in the construction business, and soon moved to Tokyo.

Malaysia has suspended business and political ties with neighbouring Singapore.
The Cabinet decision was made at a meeting Wednesday night following disparaging remarks by Singapore's senior statesman Lee Kuan Yew.
However Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has played down the incident saying it would be overcome with time.
And various Singapore Ministers claim the feud has been blown out of proportion.
There's confusion over just what sort of row has broken out between Malaysia and Singapore - amid claims that contracts with Singaporean firms have been frozen by the Malaysian cabinet.

Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin's official visit to Japan is designed to have a major impact on economic relations between Israel and Japan.
Relations in the past have been strained, due to Japan's dependency on Arab oil.
In Israel, Toyota, Suzuki and Mitsubishi are relatively new names.
However the middle east nation is fast becoming a growing market for those companies after years of Japanese boycott.
In the past the Japanese have been reluctant to deal with Israel fearing an Arab boycott of Japanese business.
Until 1988 only one Japanese car maker invested in Israel, a year later the others began to follo

Manila, Philippines – Unlike Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton’s long, heated rivalry in the 2008 US presidential campaign, there are politicians in other countries who choose to take the short cut to political power by wooing the kingmaker. Instead of patiently reaching out to the electorate, these politicians seek the person or group of people who has the capacity to influence the conclusion of a political run, a method that assures the former’s promise of the future in exchange for the latter’s favor.
On a different perspective, however, a kingmaker isn’t a kingmaker for nothing. Take for example Kakuei Tanaka, the most prominent political kingmaker in Japan. He served as Japan’s Prime Minister during 1972-74. But even after his term, he remained dominant and influential. Even though he got involved in political scandals, he was able to choke the Prime Minister at will without holding a position in the cabinet.
Monetary, arms, and politics are common players in a kingmaker scenario. More often than not, these factors entail negative effects to the government. In the Philippines, however, there is another player: religion. And the effect of this kingmaker, as far as records are concerned, is unexpectedly catastrophic. It is a chain of crimes and power – behind mythical numbers yet.
Detailed here by prominent newspapers, the Supreme Court and a television station are random reports of the criminal and related activities of one such religious group, the Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) or Church of Christ, considered to be the kingmaker in the Philippine political arena. It spans contemporary times but leads back to 1954 where the founder, Felix Manalo, is featured as a rapist. Finally, it ends with Eraño Manalo’s own words about the nature of their mythical membership. Eraño, now in his early 80s, is the son of Felix Manalo.

STORYLINE:
British police investigating the poisoning death of a former KGB agent have officially requested assistance from their Russian counterparts, prosecutors said, as officers arrived in Moscow to collect information amid rising diplomatic tensions.
Alexander Litvinenko died on November 23 in London after ingesting radioactive polonium-210.
In a deathbed accusation, he blamed Russian President Vladimir Putin for the poisoning.
The Kremlin has vehemently denied the accusations.
On Tuesday the investigators were due to begin "precautionary tests" for radiation at the British Embassy in Moscow.
The officers are also planning to interview a number of potential witnesses in the inquiry, including those who met Litvinenko on the day he was allegedly poisoned with the deadly toxin.
Meanwhile on Tuesday a Russian daily newspaper reported that a potentially central witness in the case has checked into a hospital and may be unable to meet with British investigators.
Russia's Kommersant daily reported that former Russian agent Andrei Lugovoi met with Litvinenko, who he described as a business associate, in London on November 1, the day Litvinenko is believed to have fallen ill.
Lugovoi underwent tests for radiation last week in Moscow and said on Friday that he was clean, Kommersant reported.
But on Tuesday it quoted the agent-turned-businessman's lawyer Andrei Romashov as saying that Lugovoi, his wife and three children had checked into a hospital this week for further tests.
One of Mr Litvinenko's closest friends, Alex Goldfarb, said on Monday that the Scotland Yard officers in Moscow should make it their priority to contact the jailed former Russian intelligence officer Mikhail Trepashkin.
Trepashkin, who is serving a four-year sentence for revealing state secrets, reportedly said in a letter from prison that he had warned Litvinenko several years ago about a government-sponsored death squad that intended to kill him and other Kremlin opponents.
Goldfarb said that Mr Trepashkin's health was poor and warned that if police did not visit him in jail in eastern Russia they could miss out on potentially vital evidence.

SINGAPORE: MALAYSIA SUSPENDS FREEZES BUSINESS LINKS WITH SINGAPORE
English/Nat
Angered by remarks made from Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew that Malaysia's Johor state is notorious for shootings and muggings, the Malaysian Cabinet voted on Wednesday to retaliate by suspending social, cultural and sports ties with Singapore.
Singapore's Prime Minister, Goh Chok Tong, won't comment on the freeze until he's clear on the details.
However it seems there's confusion in the Malaysian Government as to the nature of their stance.
Speaking from Japan where he's on a diplomatic visit, Malaysian leader Mahathir Mohamad claimed to know nothing of the incident.
UPSOT: (English)
Q - Mr Prime Minister, Mr Prime Minister, could you please comment on your government freezing ties with Singapore.
A - I don't know anything about it, that's what you reported.
SUPER CAPTION: Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysian Prime Minister
Other senior Malaysian Ministers deny they've frozen ties with Singapore, just suspended a culture and sports agreement.
Some Ministers are denying the freeze altogether claiming the incident has been misreported by the local newspapers.
Neither country can afford to have fragile relations threatening vital rail and ferry links between the two.
Malaysia fears Singapore wants to reclaim land on which Singapore's main train station is located - land which belongs to Malaysia.

Until 1988 only one Japanese car maker invested in Israel, a year later the others began to follow.
SOUNDBITE: In Japanese.
" In recent years we have seen a phenomenon. One is that the Japanese business people have become much more interested in business in Israel. Another is that the infrastructure for promotion of relations has been created.
SUPER CAPTION: Harahiko Shibuya, Japanese ambassador to Israel..
Most of the vehicles shipped to Israel make their first stop here at the southern port Eilat.
Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin would like to see more of these.
SOUNDBITE:
"We would like to see an improvement to the relations between the two countries, therefore we believe that Japan with all its strengths, economic and otherwise, plays an important role in bringing about peace in the region. And to show that those parties that are engaged in this get a benefit in whatever way from being involved in this.
SUPER CAPTION: Yitzhak Rabin, Israel Prime Minister..
The automobile industry is only one of the growing import to penetrate Israeli markets.
The lucrative Israeli diamond industry also has its share of Japanese companies who deal with the export and sales of cut and rough diamonds.
Kimito Aida, a Japanese diamond exporter is hoping this is only the beginning of the Japanese diamond trade with Israel.
SOUNDBITE:
"I believe Japanese major companies are willing to come to Israeli industrial firms and willing to do business together but meantime it's step by step. Therefore I really believe in this peace process and afterwards I hope all the major companies in Japan will take the place of some business in Israel.

10. SOUNDBITE (English): Paul Wolfowitz, World Bank President:
"The United States needs to accept further cuts in spending on trade distorting agricultural subsidies, the European Union needs to reduce barriers to market access, and developing countries like China, India and Brazil need to cut their tariffs on manufacturers, developing countries also need to remove trade barriers that make it harder for them to trade with each other. Doha must succeed and we must make sure that the poorest countries come out winners."

STORYLINE:
Finance leaders from around the world on Tuesday pressed for reviving the Doha Round of global trade talks that fell apart in July amid persistent differences between rich and poorer nations.
Finance ministers and delegates from 184 nations gathered at the annual meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Singapore have repeatedly voiced concern over the collapse of the talks and have warned of rising protectionism, which could slow global growth.
Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong opened the IMF conference by reminding the delegates that globalisation was the best way to improve the lives of the world population.
"It's created growth and wealth and fostered trade and interdependence. It is not without its down sides but, properly managed, globalisation is a powerful force for the good," added Loong.
The IMF chief Rodrigo de Rato said the trade sector will either go forward to greater growth and broader opportunities for the world, or backward to narrow nationalism.
"We should not fool ourselves that there is a comfortable middle ground," he added.
In July, key countries in the World Trade Organisation halted more than five years of talks to liberalise commerce amid seemingly unbridgeable differences over agricultural trade.
World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz said countries could reduce barriers that make it hard to trade with each other.
"The United States needs to accept further cuts in spending and trade distorting agricultural subsidies, the European Union needs to reduce barriers to market access, and developing countries like China, India and Brazil need to cut their tariffs on manufacturers," said Wolfowitz.

Japanese wrestling champions are currently on tour in Israel.
The visit comes at a significant time for Israel-Japan relations.

July 27th 1976, "Under the ever-growing suspicion of his violation of foreign exchange and foreign trade control rules, Kakuei Tanaka - a member of the House of Representatives - was arrested by the prosecutor at the Tokyo District Public Prosecutor's Office. Japanese Archipelago Remodeling and normalized Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations were some of his works as a prime minister. He stepped down his Prime Minister position because of his money-faction problem. Now we are trying to find the truth if he violates the law or not.
