Peter Ackroyd's excellent biography of London is required reading for all Londonphils, but I bet you didn't know that he also presented a series based on the book. It's not available in the USA (or many other places for that matter). So, we've uploaded to YouTube.

Heres a virtual movie of the celebrated 17th century London Diarist Samuel Pepys reading edited extracts from his diary recollections of "The Great Plague" that afflicted London in 1665. Outbreaks of plague were not particularly unusual events in London: major epidemics had occurred in 1592, 1603, 1625, and 1636.[38] Furthermore, Pepys was not among the group of people who were most at risk: he did not live in cramped housing, he did not routinely mix with the poor, and he was not required to keep his family in London in the event of a crisis.[39] It was not until June that the unusual seriousness of the plague became apparent, and Pepys's activities in the first five months of the year were not significantly impacted by plague.[40] Indeed, Claire Tomalin writes that 'the most notable fact about Pepys's plague year is that to him it was one of the happiest of his life.' In 1665 he toiled very hard at arduous work, but the outcome was that he quadrupled his fortune.[41] On 31 December, in his annual summary, he wrote that 'I have never lived so merrily (besides that I never got so much) as I have done this plague time'.[42] Nonetheless, it was not the case that Pepys was completely unconcerned by the plague. On 16 August he wrote that: But, Lord! how sad a sight it is to see the streets empty of people, and very few upon the 'Change. Jealous of every door that one sees shut up, lest it should be the plague; and about us two shops in three, if not more, generally shut up. — Diary of Samuel Pepys, Wednesday, 16 August 1665. He also chewed tobacco as a protection against infection, and worried that wig-makers might be using the hair of dead people as a raw material. Furthermore, it was Pepys who suggested that the Navy Office should evacuate to Greenwich, although he did offer to remain in town himself. He would later take great pride in his stoicism.[43] Meanwhile, Elisabeth Pepys was sent to Woolwich.[44] She did not return to Seething Lane until January 1666, and was shocked by the sight of St Olave's churchyard, where 300 people had been buried Samuel Pepys FRS (pronounced /ˈpiːps/ "peeps") (23 February 1633 26 May 1703) was an English naval administrator and Member of Parliament, who is now most famous for his diary. Samuel (
/ˈsæm.juː.əl/;Hebrew: שְׁמוּאֶל, Modern Shmu'el Tiberian Šəmûʼēl; Greek: Σαμουήλ Samouēl; Latin: Samvel; صموئيل, Ṣamu’īl; Strong's: Shemuwel) is a leader of ancient Israel in the Books of Samuel in the Hebrew Bible. He is also known as a prophet and is mentioned in the Qur'an.
His status, as viewed by rabbinical literature, is that he was the last of the Hebrew Judges and the first of the major prophets who began to prophesy inside the Land of Israel. He was thus at the cusp between two eras. According to the text of the Books of Samuel, he also anointed the first two kings of the Kingdom of Israel: Saul and David.
Samuel's mother was Hannah and his father was Elkanah. Hannah, at the beginning of the narrative, is barren and childless, like Abraham's wife Sarah. Hannah prays to God for a child. Eli who is sitting at the foot of the doorpost in the sanctuary at Shiloh, sees her apparently mumbling and thinks Hannah is drunk, but is soon assured of her motivation and sobriety. Eli was, according to the Books of Samuel, the name of a priest of Shiloh, and one of the last Israelite Judges before the rule of kings in ancient Israel. He blesses her after she promises the child to God. Subsequently Hannah becomes pregnant; her child is Samuel. After he is weaned, she leaves him in Eli's care.

Benny Hill (21 January 1924 – 20 April 1992) was an English comedian and actor, notable for his long-running television programme The Benny Hill Show.
Alfred Hawthorne Hill was born in Southampton and attended Taunton's School. During World War II, he was evacuated to Bournemouth.[citation needed]
After leaving school, Hill worked at Woolworth's, as a milkman, a bridge operator, a driver and a drummer before he finally got a foot in the door of the entertainment industry by becoming assistant stage manager with a touring review. He was called up in 1942 and trained as a mechanic, but transferred to the Combined Services Entertainment division before the end of the war. It was there that he met his future agent, Richard Stone, then a colonel.[citation needed]
Inspired by the "star comedians" of British music hall shows, Hill set out to make his mark in show business. For the stage, he changed his first name to 'Benny', in homage to his favourite comedian, Jack Benny. Hill began appearing at working men's clubs and Masonic dinners before moving on to nightclub and theatre jobs. Hill auditioned for Soho's famed Windmill Theatre (home of Revudeville, a popular show of singers, comedians and nude girls), but he was not hired. Hill's first job in professional theatre as a performer was as Reg Varney's straight man, beating a then unknown Peter Sellers to the role.[citation needed]

This is a quick look at where Samuel Pepys, Britain's most famous diarist, lived from 1679-1688 as Secretary of the Admiralty in London. His diary ends in 1669 though he also wrote others at different times in his life, for example the one that records his visit to Tangier in 1683-1684 during the time he lived in Buckingham St. York Stairs was an access point to the river where Londoners could get on to the boats that acted as taxis to take them east or west along the Thames. It was built in 1626 originally for York House which was the home of George Villiers, Duke Of Buckingham, and favourite of James I (1603-1625). The streets in the area today commemorate him, e.g. Villiers St which runs parallel to Buckingham St - there is even an Of Alley.

Plot: Based in the 1660's of London's theaters, this film is about the rules of gender roles in theatre production, and means to change them for everyone's benefit. Ned Kynaston is the assumedly gay cross-dressing actor who has been playing female parts in plays for years, particularly Desdemona in Othello, he also has a close relationship with a member of the Royal Court, the Duke of Buckingham. One day however, the rules of only men playing women could change when aspiring actress Maria auditions as Kynaston's praised role, Desdemona, and soon enough, King Charles II decides to make the law that all female roles should be played only by women. Maria becomes a star, while Ned finds himself out of work. But after a while, Ned finds it in his nature to forgive Maria's aspiration, they may even fall in love, and Charles may proclaim women will be played by either gender.

Plot: King Charles II first meets Nell Gwyn after seeing her do a turn at Drury Lane. This is a quick look at where Samuel Pepys, Britain's most famous diarist, lived from 1679-1688 as Secretary of the Admiralty in London. His diary ends in 1669 though he also wrote others at different times in his life, for example the one that records his visit to Tangier in 1683-1684 during the time he lived in Buckingham St. York Stairs was an access point to the river where Londoners could get on to the boats that acted as taxis to take them east or west along the Thames. It was built in 1626 originally for York House which was the home of George Villiers, Duke Of Buckingham, and favourite of James I (1603-1625). The streets in the area today commemorate him, e.g. Villiers St which runs parallel to Buckingham St - there is even an Of Alley. -

Heres a virtual movie of the celebrated 17th century London Diarist Samuel Pepys reading edited extracts from his diary recollections of "The Great Plague" that afflicted London in 1665. Outbreaks of plague were not particularly unusual events in London: major epidemics had occurred in 1592, 1603, 1625, and 1636.[38] Furthermore, Pepys was not among the group of people who were most at risk: he did not live in cramped housing, he did not routinely mix with the poor, and he was not required to keep his family in London in the event of a crisis.[39] It was not until June that the unusual seriousness of the plague became apparent, and Pepys's activities in the first five months of the year were not significantly impacted by plague.[40] Indeed, Claire Tomalin writes that 'the most notable fact about Pepys's plague year is that to him it was one of the happiest of his life.' In 1665 he toiled very hard at arduous work, but the outcome was that he quadrupled his fortune.[41] On 31 December, in his annual summary, he wrote that 'I have never lived so merrily (besides that I never got so much) as I have done this plague time'.[42] Nonetheless, it was not the case that Pepys was completely unconcerned by the plague. On 16 August he wrote that: But, Lord! how sad a sight it is to see the streets empty of people, and very few upon the 'Change. Jealous of every door that one sees shut up, lest it should be the plague; and about us two shops in three, if not more, generally shut up. — Diary of Samuel Pepys, Wednesday, 16 August 1665. He also chewed tobacco as a protection against infection, and worried that wig-makers might be using the hair of dead people as a raw material. Furthermore, it was Pepys who suggested that the Navy Office should evacuate to Greenwich, although he did offer to remain in town himself. He would later take great pride in his stoicism.[43] Meanwhile, Elisabeth Pepys was sent to Woolwich.[44] She did not return to Seething Lane until January 1666, and was shocked by the sight of St Olave's churchyard, where 300 people had been buried Samuel Pepys FRS (pronounced /ˈpiːps/ "peeps") (23 February 1633 26 May 1703) was an English naval administrator and Member of Parliament, who is now most famous for his diary. Although Pepys had no maritime experience, he rose by patronage, hard work and his talent for administration, to be the Chief Secretary to the Admiralty under both King Charles II and subsequently King James II. His influence and reforms at the Admiralty were important in the early professionalisation of the Royal Navy.[1] The detailed private diary he kept during 16601669 was first published in the nineteenth century, and is one of the most important primary sources for the English Restoration period. His diary ends in 1669 though he also wrote others at different times in his life, for example the one that records his visit to Tangier in 1683-1684 during the time he lived in Buckingham St. York Stairs was an access point to the river where Londoners could get on to the boats that acted as taxis to take them east or west along the Thames. It was built in 1626 originally for York House which was the home of George Villiers, Duke Of Buckingham, and favourite of James I (1603-1625). The streets in the area today commemorate him, e.g. Villiers St which runs parallel to Buckingham St - there is even an Of Alley.

Heres a virtual movie of the great London Diarist Samuel Pepys (1633 - 1703) reading from his Diary 1666 and Early 1667 giving his recollections of "The Great Fire of London. London in the 1660s.................. Central London in 1666, with the burnt area shown in pink.By the 1660s, London was by far the largest city in Britain, estimated at half a million inhabitants, which was more than the next fifty towns in England combined. On Sunday 2nd September 1666 a fire broke out at Thomas Farriner's bakery in Pudding Lane a little after midnight . The Great Fire of London was a major conflagration that swept through the central parts of the English city of London, from Sunday, 2 September to Wednesday, 5 September 1666. The fire gutted the medieval City of London inside the old Roman City Wall. It threatened, but did not reach, the aristocratic district of Westminster, Charles II's Palace of Whitehall, and most of the suburban slums.[] It consumed 13,200 houses, 87 parish churches, St. Paul's Cathedral, and most of the buildings of the City authorities. It is estimated that it destroyed the homes of 70,000 of the City's ca. 80,000 inhabitants.[3] The death toll from the fire is unknown and is traditionally thought to have been small, as only six verified deaths were recorded. This reasoning has recently been challenged on the grounds that the deaths of poor and middle-class people were not recorded anywhere, and that the heat of the fire may have cremated many victims, leaving no recognizable remains. The great fire started at the bakery of Thomas Farriner (or Farynor) on Pudding Lane, shortly after midnight on Sunday, 2 September, and it spread rapidly west across the City of London. The use of the major firefighting technique of the time, the creation of firebreaks by means of demolition, was critically delayed due to the indecisiveness of the Lord Mayor of London, Sir Thomas Bloodworth. By the time large-scale demolitions were ordered on Sunday night, the wind had already fanned the bakery fire into a firestorm which defeated such measures. The fire pushed north on Monday into the heart of the City. Order in the streets broke down as rumours arose of suspicious foreigners setting fires. The fears of the homeless focused on the French and Dutch, England's enemies in the ongoing Second Anglo-Dutch War; these substantial immigrant groups became victims of lynchings and street violence. On Tuesday, the fire spread over most of the City, destroying St. Paul's Cathedral and leaping the River Fleet to threaten Charles II's court at Whitehall, while coordinated firefighting efforts were simultaneously mobilizing. The battle to quench the fire is considered to have been won by two factors: the strong east winds died down, and the Tower of London garrison used gunpowder to create effective firebreaks to halt further spread eastward. The social and economic problems created by the disaster were overwhelming; significant scapegoating occurred for some time after the fire. Evacuation from London and resettlement elsewhere were strongly encouraged by Charles II, who feared a London rebellion amongst the dispossessed refugees. Despite numerous radical proposals, London was reconstructed on essentially the same street plan used before the fire. Central London in 1666, with the burnt area shown in pink.By the 1660s, London was by far the largest city in Britain, estimated at half a million inhabitants, which was more than the next fifty towns in England combined. On Sunday 2nd September 1666 a fire broke out at Thomas Farriner's bakery in Pudding Lane a little after midnight . The Great Fire of London was a major conflagration that swept through the central parts of the English city of London, from Sunday, 2 September to Wednesday, 5 September 1666. The fire gutted the medieval City of London inside the old Roman City Wall. It threatened, but did not reach, the aristocratic district of Westminster, Charles II's Palace of Whitehall, and most of the suburban slums.[] It consumed 13,200 houses, 87 parish churches, St. Paul's Cathedral, and most of the buildings of the City authorities. It is estimated that it destroyed the homes of 70,000 of the City's ca. 80,000 inhabitants.[3] The death toll from the fire is unknown and is traditionally thought to have been small, as only six verified deaths were recorded. This reasoning has recently been challenged on the grounds that the deaths of poor and middle-class people were not recorded anywhere, and that the heat of the fire may have cremated many victims, leaving no recognizable remains. The great fire started at the bakery of Thomas Farriner (or Farynor) on Pudding Lane, shortly after midnight on Sunday, 2 September, and it spread rapidly west across the City of London. The use of the major firefighting technique of the time, the creation of firebreaks by means of demolition, was critically delayed due to the indecisiveness of the Lord Mayor of London, Sir Thomas Bloodworth. By the time large-scale demolitions were ordered on Sunday night, the wind had already fanned the bakery fire into a firestorm which defeated such measures. The fire pushed north on Monday into the heart of the City. Order in the streets broke down as rumours arose of suspicious foreigners setting fires. The fears of the homeless focused on the French and Dutch, England's enemies in the ongoing Second Anglo-Dutch War; these substantial immigrant groups became victims of lynchings and street violence. On Tuesday, the fire spread over most of the City, destroying St. Paul's Cathedral and leaping the River Fleet to threaten Charles II's court at Whitehall, while coordinated firefighting efforts were simultaneously mobilizing. The battle to quench the fire is considered to have been won by two factors: the strong east winds died down, and the Tower of London garrison used gunpowder to create effective firebreaks to halt further spread eastward. The social and economic problems created by the disaster were overwhelming; significant scapegoating occurred for some time after the fire. Evacuation from London and resettlement elsewhere were strongly encouraged by Charles II, who feared a London rebellion amongst the dispossessed refugees. Despite numerous radical proposals, London was reconstructed on essentially the same street plan used before the fire. Samuel Pepys, FRS (pronounced /ˈpiːps/ "peeps"; 23 February 1633 26 May 1703) was an English naval administrator and Member of Parliament, who is now most famous for his diary. Although Pepys had no maritime experience, he rose by patronage, hard work and his talent for administration, to be the Chief Secretary to the Admiralty under both King Charles II and subsequently King James II. A short drama as Samuel Pepys visits Blakesley Hall (in Birmingham UK) and recounts his experiences of stricken London, with Blakesley owner Aylmer Foliot Jnr.
Also appearing in the video are the characters who actually do the work about the place: Barfoot (from 'amble in ampsheer'); and Elizabeth (once the best dairy maid in Worcestershire).
This slightly abridged performance (in order to comply with the YouTube time limit) was filmed in Blakesley Hall's Great Parlour on 3rd November 2013. It was the first dramatic performance of the day. The dialogue contains much interesting information on human nature -- most of it still relevant today.
The drama was set in November 1666 - two months after the great fire of London - and the audience enjoyed it immensely; in particular one or two very un-seventeenth century 'alarum' moments!
The timber-framed house was built in 1590 by Richard Smalbroke, a member of one of Birmingham's leading merchant families. His family farmed at the hall and had other buildings in the surrounding area which were lost over time. After 1685, the building passed into the hands of the Greswolde family and for the next 200 years became a tenant farm. In 1899, the hall was acquired by Henry Donne who renovated the dilapidated house before selling it to the Merry family, a local paint and varnish manufacturer, who were the last family to occupy the hall.
The hall became a museum in 1935 after centuries of use as a private home and its parlour was renovated. Its purpose was to display the history of the local medieval manors which comprise Birmingham. The Hall was damaged by a bomb in November 1941 causing extensive damage and the museum did not open again until 1957. After research in the 1970s, the Hall was restored to an authentic period appearance and refurbished using furnishings drawn from the 1684 inventory of the contents.
It was last renovated in 2002 with the extension of a visitor centre and car park. Some structural work was also carried out in the hall and modern intrusive features such as the toilet block and the boiler room were removed, the former being relocated into the new visitor centre. This allowed the second smaller parlour to be placed on the ground floor next to the Great Parlour. An adjacent barn (Grade II listed) to the east of the hall has been renovated and consists of exhibition space and space for social functions.
As a Community Museum, that is a branch museum, of the Birmingham Museums & Art Gallery it is owned and run by Birmingham Museums Trust. Many of the original architectural features of the hall remain such as the herringbone floor. Among the artefacts discovered at the hall are candlesticks and pewter goblets. In the Bedchamber, paintings on the wall from 1590 were discovered after being hidden for centuries, their rediscovery partly in thanks of the bomb damage that loosened a significant amount of plaster in the hall. When renovations took place postwar, inspection of the bedchamber revealed fragments of leather and painted plaster. When the chamber was cleaned up, the walls and timbers were shown to be decorated in a Moorish design. A mock up of how the 'painted chamber' would have looked can be seen in the back bedroom at Blakesley hall.
Blakesley Hall is a Grade II listed building.
For me personally, Blakesley Hall is the jewel in the Birmingham Museums Trust's crown. Whilst their other BMT heritage buildings may shout their importance louder, this place has an understated, unforced and relaxed beauty all of its own. The staff are also wonderfully friendly, which always helps!
I would highly recommend a visit (preferably several visits) to this lovely establishment.

In Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained, a Western epic set in the pre-Civil War South, the film's various characters say the N-word more than 100 times, resulting in a major debate over the movie's historical accuracy and respect of modern social standards. In an interview with Houston's Fox TV affiliate, the actor -- who plays a house slave loyal to a plantation owner, played by Leonardo DiCaprio -- Jackson refuses to discuss the use of the N-word until his interviewer, film critic Jake Hamilton, uses the actual word. Hamilton, a white man, refuses.
"Have you ever said it? Try it! We're not going to have this conversation unless you try it," Jackson said, breaking into laughter. When Hamilton asked him to say it, Jackson said, "F--- no, it's not the same thing."
Jackson was good-spirited about the exchange, though he never did answer the question. Earlier in December, Tarantino spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the criticism over his use of the word and violence in the film.
"Not one word of social criticism that's been leveled my way has ever changed one word of any script or any story I tell," he said. "I believe in what I'm doing wholeheartedly and passionately. It's my job to ignore that."
