The National Gallery London for kids. Animal Art Trail: 18th Century Art for toddlers & children
Our 18th Century Animal Art trail features Stubb's horse in Whistlejacket by George Stubbs (about1762), Longhi's rhinoceros in Exhibition of a Rhinoceros at Venice by Pietro Longhi (probably 1751), and Hogarth's cat in The Graham Children by William Hogarth (1742).
The National Gallery London is one of the world's best museums and is a fantastic place to take your children. When taking my toddler to the museums, I have mapped out a few routes that only take about 10 minutes! We like to have a look at a few masterpieces featuring animals. This scavenger hunt approach, gives kids a connection to the art and helps them not to be overwhelmed. I recommend keeping your visits short to give your child the chance to remember what they have seen.

BBC Documentary 2015 - The Victorian era of British History (British Empire)
BBC Documentary 2015 - The Victorian era of British History (British Empire)
The Victorian era of British history (and that of the British Empire) was the period of Queen Victoria's reign from 20 June 1837 until her death, on 22 January 1901. It was a long period of peace, prosperity, refined sensibilities and national self-confidence for Britain.[1] Some scholars date the beginning of the period in terms of sensibilities and political concerns to the passage of the Reform Act 1832.
The fields of social history and literature often refer to the Victorian era as Victorianism, especially when discussing the attitudes and culture of the later two-thirds of the 19th century. The study of Victorianism is often specifically directed at Victorian morality, which refers to highly moralistic, straitlaced language and behaviour. Those who study Victorianism are Victorianists. The era was preceded by the Georgian period and followed by the Edwardian period. The later half of the Victorian age roughly coincided with the first portion of the Belle Époque era of continental Europe and the Gilded Age of the United States.
Culturally there was a transition away from the rationalism of the Georgian period and toward romanticism and mysticism with regard to religion, social values, and arts.[2] In international relations the era was a long period of peace, known as the Pax Britannica, and economic, colonial, and industrial consolidation, temporarily disrupted by the Crimean War in 1854. The end of the period saw the Boer War. Domestically, the agenda was increasingly liberal with a number of shifts in the direction of gradual political reform, industrial reform and the widening of the voting franchise.
Two especially important figures in this period of British history are the prime ministers Gladstone and Disraeli, whose contrasting views changed the course of history. Disraeli, favoured by the queen, was a gregarious Tory. His rival Gladstone, a Liberal distrusted by the Queen, served more terms and oversaw much of the overall legislative development of the era.
The population of England and Wales combined almost doubled from 16.8 million in 1851 to 30.5 million in 1901.[3] Scotland's population also rose rapidly, from 2.8 million in 1851 to 4.4 million in 1901. Ireland's population decreased rapidly, from 8.2 million in 1841 to less than 4.5 million in 1901, mostly due to the Great Famine.[4] At the same time, around 15 million emigrants left the United Kingdom in the Victorian era and settled mostly in the United States, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.[5]
During the early part of the era, the House of Commons was headed by the two parties, the Whigs and the Conservatives. From the late 1850s onwards, the Whigs became the Liberals. These parties were led by many prominent statesmen including Lord Melbourne, Sir Robert Peel, Lord Derby, Lord Palmerston, William Ewart Gladstone, Benjamin Disraeli, and Lord Salisbury. The unsolved problems relating to Irish Home Rule played a great part in politics in the later Victorian era, particularly in view of Gladstone's determination to achieve a political settlement. Southern Ireland achieved independence in 1922.

Here it is, our pilot episode!
Why am I doing this? I travel a lot. Too much. And recently I find myself rocking up in a city that I've never been to before and know very little about. On any level. Culture, language, transport, money, food, etc. But most travel shows are an hour-long, US-centric, full of bad information, and almost exclusively aimed at tourists. So I wanted to create something different. Something aimed at the frequent traveller, something portable and short-form. Something...useful.
In our pilot episode we get you in, out, and around the wonderful city of London, England. We tell you the best way to get from the airport i

This giant Ferris wheel is over 400 feet tall, and it is one of the largest structures in the city. Some 3.5 million people ride it annually, making it one of the United Kingdom’s most popular tourist attractions. The Eye operates late into the evening, making it a perfect way to cap off a busy day of sightseeing. Believe us, if you thought London was lovely in the daylight, wait till you see it from the London Eye during the night—the city, lit up, is a glittering sight you’ll never forget.

Travel video about destination London in England.
London is an exciting and pulsating metropolis of the new millennium, a melting pot of both people and culture and a fascinating city of diverse contrasts.
The City Of London contains the Tower, an historic landmark with a remarkable history. A mighty medieval fortress with 13 towers that throughout its 900 years, has served many functions and from the Middle Ages, it was a heavily fortified prison.
After the medieval St. Paul's Cathedral was destroyed by a devastating fire in 1666, Christopher Wren was ordered to re-build it with a dome. During the 36 years of its construction, its design was frequently altered until finally a wonderful masterpiece of church architecture was created.
The Monument is the city's tallest freestanding stone column and a reminder of the Great Fire of London that destroyed 80 percent of the city. In four days, more than 13,000 buildings were destroyed and the Monument was built on the site of the bakery in which the fire began.
Since the reign of Queen Victoria, Buckingham Palace has served as London's royal residence. A garden of mulberry trees once grew on the site of today's palace and the Duke of Buckingham subsequently added a simple brick built residence. Around 60 years later, George II purchased the site for his wife and George IV eventually began to design an extensive palace complex.
The highlight of any holiday in London must be the largest Ferris wheel in the world, the London Eye. Situated on the banks of the Thames, it rises high into the sky, opposite the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben.
The former centre of the largest empire in the world, London is still a city of superlatives that attracts millions of visitors each year. Exciting both day and night, London is a modern city with age old traditions and a long and colorful history.

London Travel Guide
Here it is, our pilot episode!
Why am I doing this? I travel a lot. Too much. And recently I find myself rocking up in a city that I've never been to before and know very little about. On any level. Culture, language, transport, money, food, etc. But most travel shows are an hour-long, US-centric, full of bad information, and almost exclusively aimed at tourists. So I wanted to create something different. Something aimed at the frequent traveller, something portable and short-form. Something...useful.
In our pilot episode we get you in, out, and around the wonderful city of London, England. We tell you the best way to get from the airport into the city, the best way to get around, how much things cost, and why you should ALWAYS stand on the right.
In follow up episodes we'll be adding a food and drink segment, as well as tips on how to avoid those awkward social and business faux pas.
I really appreciate you taking the time to watch this and welcome any thoughts, feedback, ideas, and suggestions for future episodes. Travel is my passion and I'm excited to share it with you.
Oh and don't forget to subscribe for new episodes in a city near you!

Vauxhall, London Travel Guide
The colourful suburb of Vauxhall is located alongside the River Thames, not far from Central London and it’s the perfect place for a day out for all the family.
Vauxhall is home to the Secret Intelligence Service building, MI6. So, it's no surprise that Vauxhall was the birth place of James Bond. There's even a local school named after the top British spy.
History has played a significant part in the story of Vauxhall and looking around today, there are signs of the area’s past everywhere. From this wall, to these shops. Even this post box was made in the past.
Vauxhall, often known locally as Voho is known for its nightlife so while in the area I decided to go out and find myself a pretty girl. I had few drinks in Area, Union, The Eagle, Fire, The Hoist, and the Royal Vauxhall Tavern but there were barely any girls in sight… perhaps it was the X Factor final night and they were all at home watching Dermot Murnaghan and the gang.
I made loads of friends though, everyone is so friendly here especially Paulo. He wants to meet up again tomorrow and has an exciting day planned for us, something to do with cottages or something.
Getting to Vauxhall is easy, planes fly to Vauxhall International Airport frequently but the lack of a runway prevents them from landing. However, train, car or tricycle is also a good option. The cost of visiting any of Vauxhall’s nightclubs varies and poppers are available at an additional cost.

London Eye Vacation Travel Guide | Expedia
http://www.expedia.com/London-Eye-London.d6047451.Vacation-Attraction
For a unique view of London, UK, enjoy some sightseeing on the London Eye.
Climb into one of the 32 air conditioned gondolas, sit down (or stand up!), and enjoy a London Eye tour. Every half-hour, the wheel completes a rotation, meaning you get a full 30 minutes to see the capital city from a height and angle previously only reachable by birds. On a clear day, you can see up to 25 miles in all directions. Now that’s a breathtaking view.
Have you ridden on the London Eye? What did you think?

Clapham, London Travel Guide
The sleepy residential suburb is conveniently located in South London and thanks to it's excellent transport links, it only takes 15 minutes to get here.
Clapham high street is a great place to buy some gifts, there's a wide range of varied and exciting shops to check out. I also visited the 24 hour market on Venn Street. It's a great place to pick up some locally grown vegetables and freshly baked goods.
Many travel to Clapham for a break from the hustle and bustle of the city and if peace and quiet is what you're after then Clapham Common is the place for you. Anglo Saxons first settled on the common in 1887, now-a-days it's used purely for recreation and hosts many music festival.
Whether you're into football or dogging, there's something for everyone on the common.
Well I had a lovely day in Clapham and I'd highly recommend it to anyone.

ANTIQUE 18thC GEORGIAN JOHN HUGH LE SAGE SOLID SILVER CUP & COVER, LONDON c 1732
Antique 18th Century Georgian extremely rare, impressive and magnificent Solid Silver ornamental cup and cover, very heavy gauge (3018 grams), campana shaped on a circular pedestal base, the part-fluted body is applied with exceptionally crisp and detailed ribbon-tied floral garlands, the matching cover in the same style is surmounted by a cast figural finial depicting a kneeling Moor. The body is applied with vine-cast handles.
Such large vases were the most fashionable interior design accessory of the late 18th Century; the silver cup and cover in form of vase was at the top end of the market fashion. This particular piece features an unusual design, very crisp and decorative.
Due to its very large size and impressive weight it can be used as a magnificent wine or champagne bottle cooler. Both parts are fully Hallmarked English silver (985 Britannia Standard, the finest English silver), London, year 1732 (R), Maker's mark "SA" (John Hugh Le Sage, one of the most important Huguenot silversmiths of the 18th Century, subordinate Goldsmith to the King). A pair of cast candlesticks by the same silversmith has been sold in Christie's for over £20,000.

Mega City London - Taming the River Thames (The Story of London and its River Thames)
The River Thames is 215 miles long and has been an important trade route throughout its history.
Some people believe that the Romans may have been influenced by the Thames when they were choosing where to build London. According to the Museum in Docklands, the river was probably only tidal to where the City of London now sits when the Romans were choosing a site.
There are 44 locks on the non-tidal Thames, which begins nears Cirencester and ends at Teddington Lock.

Jools Holland - London Calling (Full Documentary)
Jools Holland embarks on a personal journey through the streets, historical landmarks, pubs, music halls and rock 'n' roll venues of London to uncover a history of the city through its songs, the people who wrote them and the Londoners who joined in the chorus.

But there is a strain of street-wise realism that is forever present, from its world-famous nursery rhymes to its music hall traditions, and from the Broadside Ballad through to punk and beyond.

Susannah Gibson: Animal, Vegetable, Mineral? How Eighteenth Century Science Disrupted the Natural Order
Recorded in London, July 2015
Since the time of Aristotle, there had been a clear divide between the three kingdoms of animal, vegetable, and mineral. But by the eighteenth century, biological experiments, and the wide range of new creatures coming to Europe from across the world, challenged these neat divisions. Abraham Trembley found that freshwater polyps grew into complete individuals when cut. This shocking discovery raised deep questions: was it a plant or an animal? And this was not the only conundrum. What of coral? Was it a rock o

The first bridge in the capital was located where the current London Bridge stands. It has been rebuilt many times since the Romans first constructed a river crossing there around 2,000 years ago.
Before engineer Sir Joseph Bazalgette built London’s sewer system, much of the capital’s waste was dumped in the river. In 1858, the stench from the river was so overpowering that Parliament had to be suspended and the government decided to find a way to rid the Thames of sewage.
French Impressionist Claude Monet painted the Thames three times. One of the most famous of these paintings is the Thames below Westminster. It depicts the river, Westminster Bridge and the Houses of Parliament on a spring day.
In pre-19th century London, cold winter weather would sometimes freeze the surface of the Thames. ‘Frost Fairs’ would be held on the ice, with Londoners enjoying dancing and drinking. The last fair was in 1814 and it appears unlikely there will ever be another one because the river now flows too fast for the water to freeze.
The Romans developed the Port of London around 50AD when they established a settlement called Londinium on the River Thames. It later became a major trading and ship building area for the Saxons, Normans and Tudors. London was a port long before it became a great city and the capital of England.
During the 16th century London became a centre of shipbuilding and repair. In 1558 a commission was set up to select legal quays for imports and by 1576 London was the world’s foremost trading port.
In the 18th century the Port struggled to cope and Parliament authorised the building of two new docks and a range of warehouses on the Isle of Dogs. They were opened on 22 August, 1802. Later, in the 19th century, more docks opened including the East India Dock, Millwall dock and the Royal Albert Dock.
The Port of London Authority
Trade flourished on London's docks but by the end of the 19th century improvement works were desperately needed. With no clear way forward, a Royal Commission conducted a governing review. A report issued in June 1902 recommended creating a central body – the Port of London Authority – which started its duties on 31 March 1909.
Since 1909 the new Port of London authority was obliged to provide quays, wharfs and warehouses.
The PLA’s first project was a deepwater shipping channel – part of a £12m works’ programme which included the Tilbury Docks extension, and a cargo jetty at King George V Dock. These projects were delayed as a consequence of the 1912 dock strike.
The Great Dock Strike

During the 1920s and 30s further expansion and development included the King George V dock completed, the 15-acre Quebec Dock and a new group lock completed at Blackwall Reach and South Dock formerly City Canal.

Unlike Chicago blues or Memphis soul, London has no one definitive sound. Its noisy history is full of grime, clamour, industry and countless different voices demanding to be heard. But there is a strain of street-wise realism that is forever present, from its world-famous nursery rhymes to its music hall traditions, and from the Broadside Ballad through to punk and beyond.
Jools's investigation - at once probing and humorous - identifies the many ingredients of a salty tone that could be called 'the London sound' as he tracks through the centuries from the ballads of Tyburn Gallows to Broadside publishing in Seven Dials in the 18th century, to Wilton's Music Hall in the late 19th century, to the Caribbean sounds and styles that first docked at Tilbury with the Windrush in 1948, to his own conception to the strains of Humphrey Lyttelton at the 100 Club in 1957.
Along the way, he meets musicians such as Ray Davies, Damon Albarn, Suggs, Roy Hudd, Lisa Hannigan, Joe Brown and Eliza Carthy who perform and talk about such classic songs as London Bridge is Falling Down, While London Sleeps, Knocked 'Em in the Old Kent Road, St James Infirmary Blues and Oranges and Lemons.

Was it a rock or a living form? Did plants have sexes, like animals? The boundaries appeared to blur. And what did all this say about the nature of life itself? Were animals and plants soul-less, mechanical forms, as Descartes suggested? The debates raging across science played into some of the biggest and most controversial issues of Enlightenment Europe. In this book, Susannah Gibson explains how a study of pond slime could cause people to question the existence of the soul; observation of eggs could make a man doubt that God had created the world; how the discovery of the Venus fly-trap was linked to the French Revolution; and how interpretations of fossils could change our understanding of the Earth's history. Using rigorous historical research, and a lively and readable style, this book vividly captures the big concerns of eighteenth-century science. And the debates concerning the divisions of life did not end there; they continue to have resonances in modern biology.
