Oquendo was born in Puerto Rico, and had a successful amateur record before turning professional in 1997. Graduated from Carl Schurz High School in Chicago IL as did other well known boxers. Such as former World Champion David Diaz and boxer/referee Pete Podgorski both, who are former Schurz Bulldog graduates.
Oquendo had a purported amateur record of 105-5 1990 178 lb. Springfield Golden Gloves Champion 1992 178 lb. Chicago City Golden Glove Champion 1993 Chicago City Golden Glove 201 lb.+ Super Heavyweight Champion 1993 National Golden Gloves Heavyweight Champion 1995 Chicago City Golden Glove 201 lb.+ Super Heavyweight Champion
Known as "Fast Fres" and "The Big O", Oquendo won his first 22 professional bouts, including impressive victories over Duncan Dokiwari, Bert Cooper, Clifford Etienne, David Izon, and Obed Sullivan. In 2002, while at his peak, Oquendo took on David Tua. Oquendo controlled the fight until the 9th round when Tua caught him with a series of heavy blows causing the fight to be stopped. Oquendo was noticeably unsteady on his feet after the stoppage and had to hold the top rope to stay upright. <1></http://www.cyberboxingzone.com/boxingchronicle/articles_tuaoquendo.html>
Ruslan Chagaev (Tatar: Руслан Шамил улы Чагаев; Russian: Руслан Шамилович Чагаев) born 19 October 1978) is an Uzbekistani professional boxer. He is the current WBA (Regular) heavyweight champion, having previously held the full version of the title in 2007, following a majority decision victory over Nikolai Valuev; this made him the first and to date only Asian in the history of boxing to hold a major heavyweight title. He was made "champion in recess" after sustaining an injury and was forced to relinquish the title after failing to face Valuev in a scheduled rematch. In June 2009, Chagaev suffered his first career defeat to then-reigning IBF, WBO and IBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko. Chagaev won the WBA title for a second time – the organisation's "regular" title – in July 2014 by defeating Fres Oquendo.
As an amateur, fighting in the super heavyweight division, Chagaev won gold medals at the Asian and World Championships.
Shannon Briggs (born December 4, 1971) is an American professional boxer. He is a former lineal and WBO world heavyweight champion. Nicknamed "The Cannon", Briggs currently holds the record for most first-round knockouts at 36. He has also had a minor acting career, appearing in the 2003 film Bad Boys II.
Born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, Briggs was homeless for a period in his childhood. At age 17, Briggs began training at Jimmy O'Pharrow's Starrett City Boxing Club in Brooklyn, NY. He was diagnosed with asthma as a child, which made his mother skeptical of him having any success in boxing. Shannon vowed to knockout all of his opponents in the first round so his mother wouldn't have to worry about his breathing condition. He attributes the promise he made to his mother as the motivation behind him becoming the record holder for "most first round knockouts" in boxing history. Shannon's mother died due to a heroin overdose on December 4, 1986, Shannon's birthday in Brownsville, Brooklyn, NY.
David Tua (born Mafaufau Sita; 21 November 1972) is a Samoan New Zealander former professional boxer, often regarded as one of the greatest heavyweights never to win a world title. Known for his brutal punching power, especially in his left hook, he scored sixteen knockout wins inside of the first round, and finished world heavyweight champions John Ruiz and Michael Moorer within thirty seconds, as well as late stoppages of other world champions Oleg Maskaev and Hasim Rahman. Nicknamed the "Tuamanator", his fast-paced bob and weave pressure fighting style has often drawn comparisons to Mike Tyson. Tua's professional career spanned 21 years, during which he fought many of the best fighters of the era and challenged for the WBC, IBF and IBO world heavyweight titles. He currently resides in his adopted country of New Zealand, where he runs a boxing gym.
In his early career, Tua trained three days a week at a small gym in Mangere Bridge, under boxing trainer Gerry Preston. Tua became New Zealand national heavyweight champion in 1988 at age 15.
