Uzbekistan travel day one - Arriving in Andijan after crossing the border
My Uzbekistan travel day one started after crossing the Kyrgyz-Uzbek border at the Dostuk checkpoint close to the city of Osh in Kyrgyzstan. I finally managed to step into the Uzbek territory after checking my passport, visa, and doing a quick security check of my belongings. From there I took a marshrutka to Andijan (or Andijon) which is the first city you are supposed to land in after the border crossing and on your way to the capital city Tashkent.

The Terrible Aftermath of the Andijan Massacre
Andijan Massacre (2005): One year on and there is still no justice for those killed in the massacre in Andijan, Uzbekistan on 13 May 2005. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures
After an attempt by gunmen to release religious extremists in the jails, the whole town was moved to protest not simply over the men in prison but poverty and a repressive government regime. Hundreds of unarmed people were killed and injured. This film was made by the first camera crew to make it to Andijan. Having secretly entered the town via Kyrgyzstan, they interview those involved both in Andijan itself, and in the refugee camps that the tragedy created.

Remembering the Andijan Massacre
This video was originally published on May 13, 2006, on the one year anniversary of the massacre.
On May 13, 2005, Uzbek government forces killed hundreds of unarmed people who participated in a massive public protest in the eastern Uzbek city of Andijan. The scale of this killing was so extensive, and its nature was so indiscriminate and disproportionate, that it can best be described as a massacre. A Human Rights Watch field investigation in Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan recreated a comprehensive account of the events of May 13 and 14 in Andijan. Our findings clearly demonstrate the Uzbek government forces' undeniable responsibility for the massacre.

Uzbekistan: Decade of Impunity for Massacre
On May 13, 2005, government forces opened fire on thousands of mostly peaceful protesters in the central square in the town of Andijan, a city in the Fergana Valley in eastern Uzbekistan. Through The Looking Glass: The Andijan Massacre (2011) | Trailer
Through the Looking Glass is the lost story of how hundreds of peaceful demonstrators were shot dead in Uzbekistan in a massacre that still echoes through Central Asia and a much wider world.
Silent protesters had been demonstrating for 100 days in Andijan, Uzbekistan, through 2005 to call for justice in this highly repressive state. Events came to a head in a stand off between demonstrators and the army; the military opened fire killing many as they tried to run away.
Uzbekistan, to the north of Afghanistan, is strategically critical and an emerging US ally in the Afghan war. Now, for the first time in five years, a group of survivors living abroad have decided to speak out. In full knowledge that the authorities could take revenge on their children and other relatives in prison, they h...

Saipov's newspaper was investigating the infamous Andijan massacre of 2005 and the kidnapping of Uzbeks from refugee camps allegedly organised by the president of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov.
Uzbekistan's lack of democracy, repression and human rights abuses have stood out for many years. Yet only recently the European Union suspended sanctions against the country.
