In art and iconography, a motif is an element of an image. A motif may be repeated in a pattern or design, often many times, or may just occur once in a work. A motif may be an element in the iconography of a particular subject or type of subject that is seen in other works, or may form the main subject, as the Master of Animals motif in ancient art typically does. The related motif of confronted animals is often seen alone, but may also be repeated, for example in Byzantine silk and other ancient textiles.
Ornamental or decorative art can usually be analysed into a number of different elements, which can be called motifs. These may often, as in textile art, be repeated many times in a pattern. Important examples in Western art include acanthus, egg and dart, and various types of scrollwork.

Persian Motif showcases various modes of creative expression by eight Iranian artists, who despite their differences in techniques and individual style, have been equally inspired by the rich artistic heritage of persia - the classical name for Iran. The works in the exhibition exemplifies the creative manner in which traditional culture and historical identity have been transformed by these contemporary visual artists to express new parading shifts and ideas.

The Fond du Lac Visual Artists is a professional artists' collaborative devoted to art awareness and education, to the development and enhancement of artists' skills, and to strengthening the connection between the arts and commerce in Fond du Lac. The purpose of Fond du Lac Visual Artists is to create a membership base of area artists who would like to work together with other artists in a partnership capacity, to share the work, expense, effort, and time of making a profitable living in the visual art arena. The collaborative is not limited to profit, it also promotes education, mentoring, and public awareness of the visual arts.
Rudolph Hajenga (WI) is a self-taught artist who has been hanging out in Sheboygan for the past couple of years. In this time, Hajenga has gravitated towards paint and canvas. Although his subject matter varies, the work in this exhibition will focus on figures distorted through the use of color and Native American motif.
Gallery hours are Thursday & Fridays, 5-8pm; Saturdays from 11-3pm and by appointment.

Sam Briseño, Lincoln County metal sculptor, who has been crafting in steel for three decades, exhibited “Sam Briseño Designs in Steel” in November 2012 in the Coastal Oregon Visual Artists Showcase, at the Newport Visual Arts Center in Newport, Oregon.
Objects in this exhibit illustrate the surprising versatility of the medium of metal craft in his hands. Function and form come together in the fireplace tool set, gracefully capped with a calla lily motif.
Early training as a millwright gave Briseño his foundation in the craft of cutting, welding and forging steel and other metals. Inspiration then led him to work that combines beautiful artistry with long-lasting functional use. His figurative abstract subjects pay homage to Picasso and David Smith, who are principal among many artists that Briseño has admired and from whom he’s drawn inspiration.
Briseño uses the tools of a craftsman with the eye of an artist. He has created many commissioned projects. A series of Briseño’s commissioned public art benches can be found in Toledo and Newport.
To date, there are 13 art benches, as well as the larger-than-life-sized octopus at the donation station at Hatfield Marine Research Center. “The Ambassador,” a 21-foot public sculpture, has been greeting visitors to Newport’s coastal Don Davis Park near the Newport Performing Arts Center since 2005.
Briseño currently works at in his studio in an industrial building on the edge of Toledo, and exhibits his work downtown at Gallery Briseño along with the work of other local artists.
The non-profit Oregon Coast Council for the Arts (OCCA) manages the Newport Visual Arts Center and produced this video with the help of videographer Casey Miller. This video accompanied the exhibit, and embodies OCCA's mission to promote and provide high-caliber arts experiences on the central Oregon coast. As the regional arts council for the Oregon coast, and with the assistance of a grant from the Ford Family Foundation, OCCA provides this Showcase of Oregon’s mid-career, coastal visual artists.

Mind’s Eye is a conceptual film which was made in response to the concept, Art as Navigation and Documentation. I had initially chosen to explore a mental space for this body of work, however the chosen focus also leads to the navigation and documentation of physical spaces. The film explores the nature of déjà vu and other phenomena of the mind, including déjà vecu and déjà viste. These involve an eerie feeling of familiarity of surrounding places, events, even details such as smells and sounds. The origins of these strange phenomena of the mind remain a mystery, however, there are countless theories and perceptions that people have of them. The different phenomena are distinguished by whether the familiarity was over something already seen, felt or even a spatial knowledge of a new place. The theories lend themselves to the idea of dreams versus reality, as some claim an experience of déjà vu can be traced back to a previous dream of the event. Our minds have an ability to mentally visualise false moments in time, through our dreams. It is when these dreams parallel reality to the point that we believe them, that our perceptions of reality are questioned. Symbolism and video effects are used throughout the film to express these feelings and moments in time. The blurring of images is used to replicate a feeling of confusion that one feels when trying to remember a dream, also referred to through the footage of a sleeping child. These elusive, fragmented memories are separated throughout the film, and the repetition of certain shots helps to imitate the sense of familiarity of spaces and details of them. Photos are tangible evidence of reality that are contrasted with the intangible dreams that we confuse them with. Reality is warped through the lens with the continued use of shadows, moving water, unfocused shots, and both natural and unnatural light. The eyes are used to show confusion and other feelings such as curiosity. They are also offer a visual vantage point to the mind. The motif of the sleeping baby in the dark is also used to symbolise a dreamt memory of the past, an unawareness of being in a dream and to juxtapose the light associated with remembering or feeling a familiar scene played out in real life.

Art is a term that describes a diverse range of human activities and the products of those activities, but is most often understood to refer to painting, film, photography, sculpture, and other visual media. Title: Mind’s Eye Video: Georgia Burkin Music: Home by The Falls Permission was obtained from Melinda via email to use the song. Mind’s Eye is a conceptual film which was made in response to the concept, Art as Navigation and Documentation. I had initially chosen to explore a mental space for this body of work, however the chosen focus also leads to the navigation and documentation of physical spaces. The film explores the nature of déjà vu and other phenomena of the mind, including déjà vecu and déjà viste. These involve an eerie feeling of familiarity of surrounding places, events, even details such as smells and sounds. The origins of these strange phenomena of the mind remain a mystery, however, there are countless theories and perceptions that people have of them. The different phenomena are distinguished by whether the familiarity was over something already seen, felt or even a spatial knowledge of a new place. The theories lend themselves to the idea of dreams versus reality, as some claim an experience of déjà vu can be traced back to a previous dream of the event. Our minds have an ability to mentally visualise false moments in time, through our dreams. It is when these dreams parallel reality to the point that we believe them, that our perceptions of reality are questioned. Symbolism and video effects are used throughout the film to express these feelings and moments in time. The blurring of images is used to replicate a feeling of confusion that one feels when trying to remember a dream, also referred to through the footage of a sleeping child. These elusive, fragmented memories are separated throughout the film, and the repetition of certain shots helps to imitate the sense of familiarity of spaces and details of them. Photos are tangible evidence of reality that are contrasted with the intangible dreams that we confuse them with. Reality is warped through the lens with the continued use of shadows, moving water, unfocused shots, and both natural and unnatural light. The eyes are used to show confusion and other feelings such as curiosity. They are also offer a visual vantage point to the mind. The motif of the sleeping baby in the dark is also used to symbolise a dreamt memory of the past, an unawareness of being in a dream and to juxtapose the light associated with remembering or feeling a familiar scene played out in real life. -

Persian Motif showcases various modes of creative expression by eight Iranian artists, who despite their differences in techniques and individual style, have been equally inspired by the rich artistic heritage of persia - the classical name for Iran. The works in the exhibition exemplifies the creative manner in which traditional culture and historical identity have been transformed by these contemporary visual artists to express new parading shifts and ideas.

The Fond du Lac Visual Artists is a professional artists' collaborative devoted to art awareness and education, to the development and enhancement of artists' skills, and to strengthening the connection between the arts and commerce in Fond du Lac. The purpose of Fond du Lac Visual Artists is to create a membership base of area artists who would like to work together with other artists in a partnership capacity, to share the work, expense, effort, and time of making a profitable living in the visual art arena. The collaborative is not limited to profit, it also promotes education, mentoring, and public awareness of the visual arts.
Rudolph Hajenga (WI) is a self-taught artist who has been hanging out in Sheboygan for the past couple of years. In this time, Hajenga has gravitated towards paint and canvas. Although his subject matter varies, the work in this exhibition will focus on figures distorted through the use of color and Native American motif.
Gallery hours are Thursday & Fridays, 5-8pm; Saturdays from 11-3pm and by appointment.

Join us for our artist reception on February 18th from 5 to 8pm and an exhibition talk & gallery walkthrough starting at 6pm. The gallery is located at 604 Erie Avenue, Lower Level in Sheboygan. This exhibition runs from February 9 -- March 10, 2012.
The Fond du Lac Visual Artists is a professional artists' collaborative devoted to art awareness and education, to the development and enhancement of artists' skills, and to strengthening the connection between the arts and commerce in Fond du Lac. The purpose of Fond du Lac Visual Artists is to create a membership base of area artists who would like to work together with other artists in a partnership capacity, to share the work, expense, effort, and time of making a profitable living in the visual art arena. The collaborative is not limited to profit, it also promotes education, mentoring, and public awareness of the visual arts.
Rudolph Hajenga (WI) is a self-taught artist who has been hanging out in Sheboygan for the past couple of years. In this time, Hajenga has gravitated towards paint and canvas. Although his subject matter varies, the work in this exhibition will focus on figures distorted through the use of color and Native American motif.
Gallery hours are Thursday & Fridays, 5-8pm; Saturdays from 11-3pm and by appointment.

Sam Briseño, Lincoln County metal sculptor, who has been crafting in steel for three decades, exhibited “Sam Briseño Designs in Steel” in November 2012 in the Coastal Oregon Visual Artists Showcase, at the Newport Visual Arts Center in Newport, Oregon.
Objects in this exhibit illustrate the surprising versatility of the medium of metal craft in his hands. Function and form come together in the fireplace tool set, gracefully capped with a calla lily motif.
Early training as a millwright gave Briseño his foundation in the craft of cutting, welding and forging steel and other metals. Inspiration then led him to work that combines beautiful artistry with long-lasting functional use. His figurative abstract subjects pay homage to Picasso and David Smith, who are principal among many artists that Briseño has admired and from whom he’s drawn inspiration.
Briseño uses the tools of a craftsman with the eye of an artist. He has created many commissioned projects. A series of Briseño’s commissioned public art benches can be found in Toledo and Newport.
To date, there are 13 art benches, as well as the larger-than-life-sized octopus at the donation station at Hatfield Marine Research Center. “The Ambassador,” a 21-foot public sculpture, has been greeting visitors to Newport’s coastal Don Davis Park near the Newport Performing Arts Center since 2005.
Briseño currently works at in his studio in an industrial building on the edge of Toledo, and exhibits his work downtown at Gallery Briseño along with the work of other local artists.
The non-profit Oregon Coast Council for the Arts (OCCA) manages the Newport Visual Arts Center and produced this video with the help of videographer Casey Miller. This video accompanied the exhibit, and embodies OCCA's mission to promote and provide high-caliber arts experiences on the central Oregon coast. As the regional arts council for the Oregon coast, and with the assistance of a grant from the Ford Family Foundation, OCCA provides this Showcase of Oregon’s mid-career, coastal visual artists.

Mind’s Eye is a conceptual film which was made in response to the concept, Art as Navigation and Documentation. I had initially chosen to explore a mental space for this body of work, however the chosen focus also leads to the navigation and documentation of physical spaces. The film explores the nature of déjà vu and other phenomena of the mind, including déjà vecu and déjà viste. These involve an eerie feeling of familiarity of surrounding places, events, even details such as smells and sounds. The origins of these strange phenomena of the mind remain a mystery, however, there are countless theories and perceptions that people have of them. The different phenomena are distinguished by whether the familiarity was over something already seen, felt or even a spatial knowledge of a new place. The theories lend themselves to the idea of dreams versus reality, as some claim an experience of déjà vu can be traced back to a previous dream of the event. Our minds have an ability to mentally visualise false moments in time, through our dreams. It is when these dreams parallel reality to the point that we believe them, that our perceptions of reality are questioned. Symbolism and video effects are used throughout the film to express these feelings and moments in time. The blurring of images is used to replicate a feeling of confusion that one feels when trying to remember a dream, also referred to through the footage of a sleeping child. These elusive, fragmented memories are separated throughout the film, and the repetition of certain shots helps to imitate the sense of familiarity of spaces and details of them. Photos are tangible evidence of reality that are contrasted with the intangible dreams that we confuse them with. Reality is warped through the lens with the continued use of shadows, moving water, unfocused shots, and both natural and unnatural light. The eyes are used to show confusion and other feelings such as curiosity. They are also offer a visual vantage point to the mind. The motif of the sleeping baby in the dark is also used to symbolise a dreamt memory of the past, an unawareness of being in a dream and to juxtapose the light associated with remembering or feeling a familiar scene played out in real life.
