Out of the chaos of Syria's civil war, Kurdish leftists have forged a radical, multi-ethnic mini-state. But with ISIS attacking them at every opportunity, how long can this idealistic social experiment last?
"It's not about religion here. We protect all sects" says a Kurdish soldier. Made up of enclaves across Northern Syria, Rojava is built on the principles of equality, providing sanctuary to a spectrum of minorities as well as refugees on the run from ISIS. Described by Aldar Xalil, member of the Rojava Government Council, as a “consensus based, democratic way of life”, the state enjoys a political liberty unfamiliar to other areas of the Middle East. Here, no religious restrictions are imposed on public behaviour and women are encouraged to engage in running municipalities and combat. But a close association with the PKK, a Turkish militant group with a similar ideology yet brutal past, has earned Rojava inhabitants the scornful label of “terrorists” and a cautionary approach from international players. As YPG spokesmen Redur Khalil explains, however, the national army of Syrian Kurdistan could be key in the fight against ISIS: “for the American and European plans to succeed, they will need allies on the ground”.

Al-Hasakah has been ripped apart by President Assad and IS-terrorist troops. But Kurdish militia now control the area. This report follows the Kurds as they struggle to maintain their fragile grip on the war-torn city.
"Victory or death!" chants a member of Assad's anti-terrorist unit. He's one of the fighters fiercely loyal to Syria's original regime, but who now works hand in hand with the Kurdish militia. A tenuous peace has been reached between the two, enabling a semblance of normal life in the south of the city. But evidence of the recent fighting remains a constant presence. At a roundabout on the city limits a portrait of Syria's president, Hafez al-Assad, still stands, his eyes riddled with bullets. A mother grieves over her son, lost to the conflict. "You should be proud that your son has died", a Kurdish commander tells her. He has become one of the countless martyrs to the cause. "God willing", she responds, "his blood will be avenged".

The town, along the Syria/Turkey border had been under ISIL control for 14 months - until U.S airstrikes helped the Kurds force ISIL out.

The northeastern city of Hasakah is one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse in Syria. Its population of Kurds, Sunni Arabs, and Christians was until recently politically divided between equal zones of Kurdish and Assad regime control. Immediately following the fall of the strategic border town of Tal Abyad from Islamic State (IS) fighters to Kurdish YPG forces in June, however, IS hit back with a sudden shock offensive on the regime-held half of Hasakah, causing regime forces to crumble in a matter of days.
As the Syrian army and loyalist militias relinquished control to IS, the YPG entered the battle, first encircling IS positions and then launching a ground offensive supported by pounding coalition airstrikes. Despite IS using their elite forces in the offensive, the combination of airstrikes and YPG ground troops proved too much and IS fled its recent gains in the city, leaving behind only ruined buildings and mangled bodies.
With IS pushed back from Hasakah's southern outskirts, VICE News follows the YPG as they become masters of areas of the city that until a few weeks ago had always been held by the Syrian regime. With government forces and the YPG facing off across this disputed territory, the future status of Hasakah is now unclear.

Kurdish forces are gaining more ground against the ISIL in northern Syria.
Kurds have seized the town of Ain Issa, hours after they took a nearby military base. Ain Issa is 50 kilometers north of Raqqah. The city is the ISIL’s main stronghold in Syria. Raqqah is also the de facto capital of the ISIL’s self-proclaimed caliphate. Last week, they retook Tal Abyad, another town in Raqqah province on the Turkish border. The ISIL had used Tal Abyad as a major supply line from Turkey. Syria’s Kurdish fighters have been making significant advances against the ISIL in the past months. Back in January, they liberated the city of Kobani.

Syrian Kurds say the Turkish army has attacked their fighters and positions in northern Syria. They’ve urged Ankara to immediately stop what they call its aggression.
The Kurdish People’s Protection Units say the Turkish army is attacking their positions instead of targeting ISIL-held areas. Kurdish sources say Turkish tanks heavily pounded their positions in two Aleppo villages overnight, leaving several people injured. A Turkish government official has denied the attack, saying the Kurds’ positions remain outside the scope of Ankara’s military action. Tensions rise between Syrian Kurds and ethnic Arabs
There is fear of yet another conflict within Syria's war. Tensions between Kurds and ethnic Arabs are growing in the northeastern corner of the country. The main Syrian Kurdish military force, the YPG, is being accused of ethnic cleansing by deliberately displacing ethnic Arabs. Out of the chaos of Syria's civil war, Kurdish leftists have forged a radical, multi-ethnic mini-state. But with ISIS attacking them at every opportunity, how long can this idealistic social experiment last?
"It's not about religion here. We protect all sects" says a Kurdish soldier. Made up of enclaves across Northern Syria, Rojava is built on the principles of equality, providing sanctuary to a spectrum of minorities as well as refugees on the run from ISIS. Described by Aldar Xalil, member of the Rojava Government Council, as a “consensus based, democratic way of life”, the state enjoys a political liberty unfamiliar to other areas of the Middle East. Here, no religious restrictions are imposed on public behaviour and women are encouraged to engage in running municipalities and combat. But a close association with the PKK, a Turkish militant group with a similar ideology yet brutal past, has earned Rojava inhabitants the scornful label of “terrorists” and a cautionary approach from international players. As YPG spokesmen Redur Khalil explains, however, the national army of Syrian Kurdistan could be key in the fight against ISIS: “for the American and European plans to succeed, they will need allies on the ground”.

Al-Hasakah has been ripped apart by President Assad and IS-terrorist troops. But Kurdish militia now control the area. This report follows the Kurds as they struggle to maintain their fragile grip on the war-torn city.
"Victory or death!" chants a member of Assad's anti-terrorist unit. He's one of the fighters fiercely loyal to Syria's original regime, but who now works hand in hand with the Kurdish militia. A tenuous peace has been reached between the two, enabling a semblance of normal life in the south of the city. But evidence of the recent fighting remains a constant presence. At a roundabout on the city limits a portrait of Syria's president, Hafez al-Assad, still stands, his eyes riddled with bullets. A mother grieves over her son, lost to the conflict. "You should be proud that your son has died", a Kurdish commander tells her. He has become one of the countless martyrs to the cause. "God willing", she responds, "his blood will be avenged".

The northeastern city of Hasakah is one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse in Syria. Its population of Kurds, Sunni Arabs, and Christians was until recently politically divided between equal zones of Kurdish and Assad regime control. Immediately following the fall of the strategic border town of Tal Abyad from Islamic State (IS) fighters to Kurdish YPG forces in June, however, IS hit back with a sudden shock offensive on the regime-held half of Hasakah, causing regime forces to crumble in a matter of days.
As the Syrian army and loyalist militias relinquished control to IS, the YPG entered the battle, first encircling IS positions and then launching a ground offensive supported by pounding coalition airstrikes. Despite IS using their elite forces in the offensive, the combination of airstrikes and YPG ground troops proved too much and IS fled its recent gains in the city, leaving behind only ruined buildings and mangled bodies.
With IS pushed back from Hasakah's southern outskirts, VICE News follows the YPG as they become masters of areas of the city that until a few weeks ago had always been held by the Syrian regime. With government forces and the YPG facing off across this disputed territory, the future status of Hasakah is now unclear.

Kurdish sources say Turkish tanks heavily pounded their positions in two Aleppo villages overnight, leaving several people injured. A Turkish government official has denied the attack, saying the Kurds’ positions remain outside the scope of Ankara’s military action. Turkey claims its ongoing military campaign is against P-K-K militants in Iraq and ISIL terrorists in Syria.

The People's Protection Units commonly known as the YPG, is the armed wing of the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) in Syrian Kurdistan. The group is one of the armed Kurdish forces in Syria and has so far taken a defensive position in the Syrian Civil War, fighting against any group that tries to take control of the Kurdish areas.
The group was founded by the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) after the 2004 Qamishli clashes, but it was not active until the Syrian Civil War. Following the signing of the 2012 Arbil Agreement by PYD and the Kurdish National Council (KNC), the YPG came under the formal command of the Kurdish Supreme Committee. However in reality it is almost exclusively still the armed wing of the PYD. The KNC has accused the PYD of using its armed wing as a way to intimidate other Kurdish parties, these allegations include kidnapping, assassinations and the removal of other party flags from public buildings.
The YPG is composed of men and women from communities across the Kurdish region of Syria. The YPG considers itself a democratic people's army and conducts internal elections as a method of appointing officers. Though predominantly Kurdish, the group has attracted increasing numbers of Arabs, including fighters defecting from the mainstream opposition as well as locals from mixed or Arab villages in YPG-controlled territory who see the group as the best guarantor of regional security; a number of non-Kurdish Christians also fight in YPG ranks, and the militia has close ties to the Assyrian/Syriac Sutoro and Syriac Military Council. They are known for their large number of women fighters.

The U.S. continues its scattered approach to Syria

WHEN HE was asked why the Obama administration announced the dispatch of a contingent of Special Operations forces to Syria on the same day a multinational conference was discussing diplomatic solutions to the country’s civil war, Secretary of State John F. Kerry responded that it was a “coincidence.” The remark was more revealing than he intended. A flurry of U.S. actions on Syria in recent days not only failed to add up to a coherent strategy, but also did not even support one another.
Mr. Kerry was in Vienna trying to win agreement on a plan for a political transition in Syria that would include the creation of a transition government, the drafting of a constitution and U.N.-supervised free elections. That broad idea won support, but Mr. Kerry’s proposal for a timeline under which Syrian President Bashar al-Assad would be removed in four to six months and elections held in 18 months was flatly rejected by Russia and Iran, according to the Wall Street Journal. That means the cease-fire the diplomats called for is unlikely to happen, since rebels will not accept an end to the war that leaves the blood-drenched dictator in power.
Mr. Kerry rightly insisted that the removal of Mr. Assad is necessary to end the civil war and defeat the Islamic State. But he also acknowledged that the military measures announced Friday by the White House, which will send 50 or fewer Special Operations troops to northern Syria and increase air assets in Turkey, will not advance that aim. “It is not an action or a choice focused on Assad,” he said Saturday. Instead, the measure is aimed at weakening the Islamic State by supporting an alliance of Syrian Kurds and Arabs that intends to capture territory and supply routes near the Islamic State capital of Raqqa.
Any action that increases U.S. military pressure on the terrorist entity is welcome, but the steps Mr. Obama approved are incremental and underpowered. By the account of U.S. officials, they are not consequential enough to lead to the fall of Raqqa anytime soon. And Mr. Obama set aside other plans developed by the Pentagon, such as one to back Iraqi forces with Apache helicopters and front-line advisers to enable advances against the Islamic State from the east as well as the north.
On Saturday, the administration announced $100 million in new nonlethal aid to the Syrian opposition. But the Syrian forces receiving the new U.S. military support not only are not fighting the Assad regime but also do not necessarily share the political goal endorsed by the Vienna conference of reuniting the country while leaving “state institutions . . . intact.” Syrian Kurds, who have a de facto truce with the regime, are attempting to carve out their own autonomous territory.
Russia and Iran are using military forces they have dispatched to Syria to back their political goal, which is to keep the Assad regime in power indefinitely. Because Mr. Obama refuses to endorse steps that would place more pressure on Mr. Assad, Mr. Kerry lacks the leverage to reject that agenda. U.S. military force meanwhile is being applied to a tactical objective that, if achieved, might do as much to help the Russo-Iranian cause as it would to achieve U.S. political aims. Given the disconnect between U.S. military and diplomatic efforts, it will not be surprising if both are failures.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says Ankara won’t allow Kurdish groups to take control of northern Syria, accusing them of trying to grab land there.
Erdogan slammed the Kurds for merging the Syrian town of Tal Abyad into the autonomous Kurdish government. Speaking to a crowd of people in Zerve, the president said Ankara would never allow Syria to become a victim of the Kurdish plot, adding that such moves pose a threat to Turkey. He also criticized those that have provided PYD Kurdish fighters with arms and assistance, without naming any specific country. Back in June, PYD fighters recaptured Tal Abyad, located on the Syrian border with Turkey. They have in the past denied accusations of wanting to establish their own state. But Turkey says they have deep links to the PKK militants.

Turkey is alarmed by territorial gains for the Kurds in Syria's civil war, which it fears could stir separatism among its own Kurdish minority.
Tel Abyad, on the border with Turkey, was captured in June from Islamic State by Kurdish YPG militia with help from U.S.-led air strikes. Last week, a local leadership council declared it part of the system of autonomous self government established by the Kurds.
Syrian Kurds have established three autonomous zones, or "cantons', across northern Syria since the civil war broke out in 2011. They deny aiming to establish their own state.
The YPG's capture of Tel Abyad linked up the Kurdish-controlled canton of Kobani, which was besieged by Islamic State last year, with the bigger canton of Jazeera, which is further east and borders Iraq.
Turkey has for the past three decades been trying to end an insurgency by fighters of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which is classified as a terrorist organisation by the United States and European Union.
The PKK has been staging almost daily attacks in the southeast since July, when a ceasefire fell apart.
Ankara accuses the Syrian Kurds' political arm, the PYD, of deep links to the PKK. It has been incensed by the role the Kurds have carved out for themselves, with U.S. support, in the fight against Islamic State in northern Syria.

In June 2015, Kurdish forces — supported by the Free Syrian Army and US-led coalition airstrikes — drove out the Islamic State (IS) from the northern Syrian town of Tal Abyad — a strategically important gain in the battle against the jihadists. Yet the fighting also forced waves of refugees to cross the border into the Turkish town of Akcakale.
The advance on Tal Abyad, containing a diverse population of Arabs, Turkmen, and Kurds, provoked the Turkish government and a coalition of rebel groups to accuse Kurdish forces of “ethnic cleansing” and displacing Arabs and Turkmen — an accusation strongly denied by the Kurdish forces.
Yet allegations of forcible displacement persist among refugees, with some telling VICE News that their hometown is now under another hostile occupation, and others stating that life under IS rule was better.
Many refugees in Akcakale have had to set up camp in parks, or rent overcrowded housing. There is a lack of food and a number of children require immediate medical attention.
VICE News meets the refugees and activists of Tal Abyad, where they describe their new life in Turkey, as well as their fears for the future.

Captagon, a highly addictive amphetamine, is the drug of choice for Syria's revolutionaries. We trace the drug trail, from its users on battlefields, along Lebanese smuggling routes, to the kingpins at the top of the chain.
"If the commander told me to attack a military barracks, I will do it with a brave heart and without any fear", a Syrian fighter describers the powerful and intoxicating effects of Captagon. Combatants on both sides are reportedly turning to the stimulant to help them keep fighting. Tracing the smuggling routes back to Lebanon and unique access to a factory where the drug is produced reveals the scale of the drug's popularity. Although they risk life sentences, workers at the Captagon factory are producing "half a million to a million pills per week", a large proportion destined for Syria's fighters. And at the very top of the chain, a wealthy kingpin explains how the "800 million dollar industry" is directly fuelling the Syrian conflict, as profits are funnelled back to militias on the front lines.

As Syria's bloody civil war enters its third year, fighting has reached the country's Kurdish-dominated northeast, a region until recently almost untouched by the conflict. The Kurdish PYD party and its YPG militia, which is affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in neighboring Turkey, took over control of much of Hassakeh province from the Assad regime in the summer of 2012, and with it control of Syria's precious oilfields.
But the PYD's hopes of staying neutral in the conflict and building an autonomous Kurdish state were dashed when clashes broke out with Syrian rebel forces in the strategic border city of Ras al-Ayn. That encounter quickly escalated into an all-out war between the Kurds and a powerful alliance of jihadist groups, including the al-Qaeda affiliates ISIS and Jabhat al-Nusra.
In September of 2013, VICE crossed the border into Syria's Kurdish region to document the YPG's counteroffensive against the jihadists, who had struck deep into rural Hassakeh in an attempt to surround and capture Ras al-Ayn. With unparalleled access to the Kurdish and Syrian Christian fighters on the frontlines, we found ourselves witnessing a bitter and almost unreported conflict within the Syrian war, where the Assad regime is a neutral spectator in a life or death struggle between jihadist-led rebels and Kurdish nationalists, pitting village against village and neighbor against neighbor.
