Arabic pronunciation (help·info)), is a country in Western Asia, bordering Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea to the West, Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, and Israel to the southwest.
In English, the name Syria was formerly synonymous with the Levant, known in Arabic as Sham, while the modern state encompasses the sites of several ancient kingdoms and empires, including the Eblan civilization of the third millennium BC. In the Islamic era, its capital city, Damascus, the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world, was the seat of the Umayyad Caliphate, and a provincial capital of the Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt.
The population of Syria is 74% Sunni, 12% Alawi, 10% Christian, and 3% Druze. Combined, 87% of the Syrian population is Muslim, while the other 10% is Christian, which includes mainly Arab Christians but also Assyrians and Armenians. Major ethnic minorities in Syria include Kurds (9%), Assyrians, Armenians, Turkmens and Circassians. The majority of the population is Arab (90%).

The Syrian uprising is an ongoing, violent internal conflict in Syria. It is part of the wider Arab Spring, a wave of upheaval throughout the Arab world. Public demonstrations across Syria began on 26 January 2011 and developed into a nationwide uprising. Protesters demanded the resignation of President Bashar al-Assad, the overthrow of his government, and an end to nearly five decades of Ba’ath Party rule.
Since spring 2011, the Syrian government has deployed the Syrian Army to quell the uprising. Several cities have been besieged, but nevertheless the unrest continues. According to witnesses, soldiers who refused to open fire on civilians were summarily executed by the Syrian Army. The Syrian government denied reports of defections, and blamed "armed gangs" for causing trouble. Since early autumn 2011, civilians and army defectors began forming fighting units, which began an insurgency campaign against the Syrian Army. The insurgents unified under the banner of the Free Syrian Army and fought in an increasingly organized fashion; however, the civilian component of the armed opposition lacks an organized leadership.

Sono molte le donne e gli uomini che si sono uniti alla fiera resistenza delle "Unità Di Difesa Popolari - YPG" ed alle "Unità Di Protezione Delle Donne - YPJ" contro i continui attacchi delle milizie dello Stato Islamico ed i suoi alleati nel territorio del Rojava.
Molti e molte di loro hanno perso la propria vita in questa battaglia, arrivando da ogni angolo del mondo, in particolar modo dalla Turchia.
Il governo della Repubblica di Turchia, da svariato tempo, vieta alle famiglie di alcuni combattenti di poter recuperare i corpi dei propri cari, impedendone di fatto lo svolgimento dei funerali. Lo stato turco detiene i copri dei martiri al confine tra Turchia e Syria, da Luglio del 2014, continuando a non offrire risposte chiare ai familiari che, grazie alla solidarietà di rivoluzionari della sinistra turca e curda, continuano da svariato tempo a fare pressione sul governo. Il breve reportage racconta la storia di alcune di queste famiglie, conosciute tra Luglio e Settembre del del 2015, nel periodo più intenso della loro battaglia .

Giacomo Sini, uno dei primi Italiani a raggiungere la Rojava dopo la prima proclamazione di autogoverno del 2014, ha vinto recentemente, con il suo reportage su Kobane, il primo premio come miglior progetto editoriale al mondo per la categoria "conflict editorial" al Moscowphoto Award - La sua storia fotografica cerca di raccontare attraverso diversi scatti, lo sguardo delle persone che si trovano all'interno della città distrutta di Kobane ed il punto di vista di quelli che, invece, sono scappati dalla città durante l' assedio di IS, molti dei quali stanno tentando l'arrivo in Europa. Alcuni di essi,invece, oggi vivono in Turchia e stanno cercando lentamente di rientrare lentamente e con difficoltà nella città di Kobanê, nel Kurdistan in territorio siriano (Rojava). Le sue fotografie cercano di mostrare, attraverso un viaggio visivo, la storia di queste persone, partendo dall'incontro con chi ha liberato la città ed è ancora in prima linea per difendere la popolazione dei cantoni curdi nel Nord della Syria, il Rojava.

The Kalaa Citadel is situated on the periphery of the old town that was once surrounded by huge walls and it was from there that Saladin fended off the attacks of the Crusaders. The Khan As´Ad Pasha is often referred to as being the most beautiful caravansary in the Near East. Its inner courtyard is covered by eight mighty and partly painted cupolas each of which is supported by four pillars. Set amid the desert savannah of Syria are the proud remains of a unique and mysterious metropolis, Palmyra, a legendary ancient city that was built due to the existence of the Tadmur Oasis. The shortest and fastest route from the Mediterranean to Mesopotamia and Persia travels directly past the Tadmur Oasis thus it was only a question of time until an important trading post was founded there. Around a quarter of a million Bedouins live in Syria’s desert areas. They are nomads who speak Arabic and belong to the Muslim faith and their income is derived from sheep, goats and camels which produce both milk and meat. Among the ruined city's Roman and Christian structures, the fortified amphitheater is probably the greatest.
This deep, stadium-like building is mostly intact and gives a taste of what Bosra may once have been like.

Then came Persian, Roman and Islamic emperors followed by the Crusaders and Mongols. The Kalaa Citadel is situated on the periphery of the old town that was once surrounded by huge walls. It was from here that Saladin fended off the attacks of the Crusaders. The Romans built a fort here that was constantly extended with impressive walls and towers and located directly outside the city wall, the River Barada was also of strategic importance. Although the Mongols destroyed the inner buildings, the fortress walls survived. The Suq is an important part of every Islamic city, a market that originated in ancient times. Thousands of shops in numerous interconnected lanes form the commercial heart of Damascus. In the Gold Suq everything glitters, bracelets, rings and even a large variety of kitchen utensils. Damascus has for thousands of years been a place desired by the powerful. Yet it has managed to survive and is still the most beautiful capital city in the Near East.

Syria, officially the Syrian Arab Republic, is a country in Western Asia, bordering Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea to the west, Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, and Israel to the southwest. Its capital Damascus is among the oldest continuously-inhabited cities in the world. A country of fertile plains, high mountains, and deserts, it is home to diverse ethnic and religious groups, including the Arab, Greeks, Armenians, Assyrians, Kurds, Circassians, Mhallami, Mandeans and Turks. Religious groups include Sunni, Christians, Alawite, Druze religion, Mandeanism and Yezidi. Sunni Arabs make up the largest population group in Syria.
In English, the name "Syria" was formerly synonymous with the Levant (known in Arabic as al-Sham) while the modern state encompasses the sites of several ancient kingdoms and empires, including the Eblan civilization of the 3rd millennium BC. In the Islamic era, Damascus was the seat of the Umayyad Caliphate and a provincial capital of the Mamluk Sultanate in Egypt.
The modern Syrian state was established after World War I as a French mandate, and represented the largest Arab state to emerge from the formerly Ottoman-ruled Arab Levant. It gained independence in April 1946, as a parliamentary republic. The post-independence period was tumultuous, and a large number of military coups and coup attempts shook the country in the period 1949–1971. Between 1958-61, Syria entered a brief union with Egypt, which was terminated by a military coup. The Arab Republic of Syria came into being in 1963, transforming from the Republic of Syria in the Ba'athist coup d'état. Syria was under Emergency Law from 1963 to 2011, effectively suspending most constitutional protections for citizens, and its system of government is considered to be non-democratic. Bashar al-Assad has been president since 2000 and was preceded by his father Hafez al-Assad, who was in office from 1970 to 2000.

The Romans soon recognized the strategic importance of Palmyra as it was a vital centre of trade in the Near East. Palmyra’s fine buildings such as its Amphitheatre were typical of its impressive architecture. Most of the Tetrapylon has been restored. It towers high above the ancient ruins and the Great Colonnade was once the main street of the historic metropolis. Beyond the city walls in the Valley Of Tombs the mystic atmosphere of the former caravan city becomes apparent. Several well preserved mausoleums give the surreal looking desert landscape a truly ghostly atmosphere. The architecture of these multi-floored burial places are unique in the world. The view from the Arabian fortress extends across the picturesque ruins of the city to the endless horizons of the desert. The oasis and ancient remains of Palmyra look almost surreal as if in a dream yet the old ruins and the mighty fortress really do exist in very tangible and resplendent form.

A young couple from Mississippi faces federal charges after the pair was arrested over the weekend for conspiring and attempting to provide material support and resources to the Islamic State (ISIS) group.
The arrested couple, Jaelyn Delshaun Young, 20, and Muhammad Oda Dakhlalla, 22, had been in fact revealing their plans of joining ISIS to covert FBI agents online since May, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Young allegedly said her skills in math and chemistry and work experience at an analytical lab as well as her partner’s computer science skills would be useful to ISIS. The couple also expressed that they would love to provide medical aid, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Young said the wedding took place in June and the couple would travel to Istanbul and eventually enter Syria to join ISIS using honeymoon as their cover story, CNN reported.
The couple was arrested at the Golden Triangle Regional Airport Saturday morning, just before boarding a plane to Istanbul. They could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted, Reuters reported.

(ASI) Torna a fare capolino 'Sguardi sul Mondo', la nostra rubrica di politica internazionale, realizzata in compagnia di Andrea Fais, direttore della rivista "Scenari Internazionali" e nostro collaboratore per gli Esteri. Abbiamo affrontato la caldissima situazione siriana, dove i russi sono da pochi giorni scesi direttamente in campo per aiutare le truppe dell'Esercito Arabo Siriano di Assad ad affrontare l'ISIS e gli altri gruppi integralisti attivi nel Paese. Siamo poi passati a parlare dell'allarmante flusso di rifugiati provenienti dall'Africa e dal Medio Oriente, che stanno destabilizzando l'Europa e dividendo molti Paesi membri dell'Unione sia per quel che riguarda la definizione delle quote da assegnare ad ogni Stato sia per la gestione complessiva del problema migratorio. During his state of the Union Address President Obama mentioned the completed US withdrawal from Iraq, the return of some US troops from Afghanistan and the accomplishments against the Taliban and al-Qaeda including the deaths of Osama bin Laden and Anwar al-Awlaki. Obama underscored Americas commitment to Israel, Americas determination to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon and explained during his Arab Spring section the US position regarding the uprising in Syria by saying: "while it is ultimately up to the people of the region to decide their fate, we will advocate for those values that have served our own country so well. We will stand against violence and intimidation. We will stand for the rights and dignity of all human beings -- men and women; Christians, Muslims, and Jews. We will support policies that lead to strong and stable democracies and open markets, because tyranny is no match for liberty." The president discussed the economic situation in America before and after his Inauguration and said with respect to the Income inequality in the United States and the 2012 presidential election: "We can either settle for a country where a shrinking number of people do really well, while a growing number of Americans barely get by. Or we can restore an economy where everyone gets a fair shot, everyone does their fair share, and everyone plays by the same set of rules." Obama reiterated his call for Congress to extend the payroll tax cut through the end of the year, a benefit to working-class families, urged Congress in his speech to make college more affordable and warned colleges and universities that they risk losing federal funding if they do not keep tuition costs down. The President called upon Congress to deny tax breaks to companies that outsource and provide a tax credit to companies that bring jobs back into the United States. He also called for better job training and education and proposed to use one half of the savings from the completed Iraq War and the winding down Afghanistan War for public-works projects and the other half for deficit reduction. Obama pushed Congress to make it easier for Americans to refinance their homes if their interest rates are above market rates, by using revenue from the administration's proposed fee on banks to help finance the initiative. During the speech, Obama announced the creation of a Unit on Mortgage Origination and Securitization Abuses, which will operate as part of the Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force, to investigate misconduct that contributed to the subprime mortgage crisis. The unit will be headed by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. The president also proposed a new trade enforcement unit that would add to the number of government investigators pursuing unfair trade practices and that would be responsible for filing lawsuits against foreign countries, namely China. Obama also renewed his call for the institution of the Buffett Rule, whereby people making more than $1 million a year would pay a minimum effective tax rate of at least 30 percent in income taxes, and to let the high-end Bush-era tax cuts expire. During his state of the Union Address President Obama mentioned the completed US withdrawal from Iraq, the return of some US troops from Afghanistan and the accomplishments against the Taliban and al-Qaeda including the deaths of Osama bin Laden and Anwar al-Awlaki. Obama underscored Americas commitment to Israel, Americas determination to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon and explained during his Arab Spring section the US position regarding the uprising in Syria by saying: "while it is ultimately up to the people of the region to decide their fate, we will advocate for those values that have served our own country so well. We will stand against violence and intimidation. We will stand for the rights and dignity of all human beings -- men and women; Christians, Muslims, and Jews. We will support policies that lead to strong and stable democracies and open markets, because tyranny is no match for liberty." The president discussed the economic situation in America before and after his Inauguration and said with respect to the Income inequality in the United States and the 2012 presidential election: "We can either settle for a country where a shrinking number of people do really well, while a growing number of Americans barely get by. Or we can restore an economy where everyone gets a fair shot, everyone does their fair share, and everyone plays by the same set of rules." Obama reiterated his call for Congress to extend the payroll tax cut through the end of the year, a benefit to working-class families, urged Congress in his speech to make college more affordable and warned colleges and universities that they risk losing federal funding if they do not keep tuition costs down. The President called upon Congress to deny tax breaks to companies that outsource and provide a tax credit to companies that bring jobs back into the United States. He also called for better job training and education and proposed to use one half of the savings from the completed Iraq War and the winding down Afghanistan War for public-works projects and the other half for deficit reduction. Obama pushed Congress to make it easier for Americans to refinance their homes if their interest rates are above market rates, by using revenue from the administration's proposed fee on banks to help finance the initiative. During the speech, Obama announced the creation of a Unit on Mortgage Origination and Securitization Abuses, which will operate as part of the Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force, to investigate misconduct that contributed to the subprime mortgage crisis. The unit will be headed by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. The president also proposed a new trade enforcement unit that would add to the number of government investigators pursuing unfair trade practices and that would be responsible for filing lawsuits against foreign countries, namely China. Obama also renewed his call for the institution of the Buffett Rule, whereby people making more than $1 million a year would pay a minimum effective tax rate of at least 30 percent in income taxes, and to let the high-end Bush-era tax cuts expire. Reportage dalla Giordania sui rifugiati siriani (di Daniela Sala)
Duyuf in arabo significa 'ospiti'. Ed è così che a volte in Giordania ci si riferisce ai ai siriani e agli iracheni che hanno cercato rifugio dalla guerra nel paese.
La Giordania infatti non ha mai siglato la Convenzione di Ginevra del 1951 sui rifugiati. E se è unanimemente condiviso un generico dovere di ospitalità, dal punto di visto giuridico e pratico, soprattutto con i flussi di persone in entrata in costante aumento le cose non sono così semplici.
Il regno giordano conta poco meno di sei milioni di abitanti. Stando ai dati dell'Unhcr, l'agenzia delle Nazioni unite che registra e assiste i rifugiati nel paese, gli asilanti attuali sarebbero 811mila, pari insomma al 13% della popolazione. Per la fine del 2015 si prevede di superare quota un milione. Insomma è come se in Italia ci fossero 8 milioni di rifugiati.
In Giordania la maggior parte dei siriani (7 su 10) vive nelle aree urbane, ma a differenza di quanto previsto dalla Convenzione di Ginevra, i siriani non sono automaticamente autorizzati a lavorare: c'è bisogno di un permesso ad hoc da parte delle autorità che al momento è quasi impossibile da ottenere. Inoltre la legge giordana stabiliste che solo i cittadini giordani abbiano accesso a determinate professioni (vale ad esempio nei settori della sanità, dell'istruzione, delle costruzioni, dell'amministrazione e dell'ingegneria).
La vita però in Giordania costa cara, quasi quanto in Italia e come inevitabile conseguenza la maggior parte dei siriani nel paese lavora in nero, contendendo i lavori più umili ai lavoratori stranieri, soprattutto egiziani ed asiatici che già vivono nel paese, e alimentando le tensioni sociali.
Le preoccupazioni del governo e l'insofferenza dei cittadini verso un così alto numero di stranieri si fa sempre più tangibile: non è raro che i giornali e la politica puntino il dito contro i rifugiati che 'ruberebbero' il lavoro ai cittadini giordani e che, sopratutto, abbasserebbero il costo della manodopera.
Quello che è certo è che il massiccio afflusso di siriani nelle città ha già fatto lievitare i prezzi degli affitti. Inoltre un così alto numero di persone (tra cui molti bambini) si è tradotto quasi immediatamente in un carico difficilmente sostenibile per le scuole e gli ospedali. Molte scuole fanno ora doppi turni, per poter accogliere anche i bambini rifugiati, ma resta comunque molto difficile trovare un posto nelle scuole pubbliche.
Il settore della sanità, invece, è quasi completamente privato e se all'inizio i siriani avevano accesso gratuito alle cure, da alcuni mesi a questa parte il governo a stabilito che i rifugiati vadano considerati come cittadini giordani non assicurati: se hanno bisogno di cure mediche, devono pagare.
Di fatto, molti rifugiati vivono sotto la soglia di povertà e la dipendenza dall'Unhcr o da altre organizzazioni umanitarie è per molti di loro già un fatto. Si stima che dallo scorso anno circa 10mila siriani siano tornati nel proprio paese e certo non per un miglioramento delle condizioni interne, quanto per l'impossibilità di sopravvivere negli altri paesi dell'area.
Alcuni sono tornati a vivere nei campi profughi vicino al confine, città di container o tende in mezzo al deserto, ma dove almeno non si paga l'affitto.
In Giordania i più noti sono due: Zaatari, che è il secondo campo profughi più grande del mondo, e Azraq, il nuovo campo inaugurato ad aprile e progetto per ospitare tutti i nuovi arrivati, fino a 130mila persone.
Il nostro reportage parte proprio da Zaatari, poche decine di chilometri dalla citta siriana di Dara'a. Siamo stati poi al centro di registrazione dell'Unchr ad Amman, a Khalda, che è il più grande centro di registrazione per richiedenti asilo al mondo. Con la Caritas giordana abbiamo poi visitato una scuola, dove si organizzano delle attività pomeridiane per i bambini siriani, e un centro medico gratuito, dove quindi si recano quotidianamente decine di siriani, iracheni o anche giordani senza assicurazione sanitaria.
Infine abbiamo incontrato ed intervistato anche i responsabili di Echo, la missione dell'Unione europa per la protezione civile e gli aiuti umanitari all'estero, di Human rights watch, di ActionAid e dell'Unione delle donne giordane.
