Dozens of families have found shelter in ancient Roman ruins in Syria's north, fleeing continuous bombardment and shelling.
Some of the families fled their homes in Kafer Rouma south of the city of Idlib over three months ago.
They now live in what is left of the 1,500-year-old settlements known to the locals as "The Forgotten Cities."
Looking weary and malnourished, a baby girl could hardly open her eyes.
Fatima was born just a month ago amongst the ancient ruins outside Kafer Rouma, a village in northern Syria, Idlib province, which has come under shelling by President Bashar Assad's forces during the country's civil war.
Her family fled their home in the village to the giant stone blocks and centuries-old walls so Fatima's mother could give birth in relative safety.
"We left because of the planes dropping TNT (trinitrotoluene) barrels and because of the shelling," said Fatima's father, who agreed to give only his nickname of Abu Ahmed for fear of reprisals.
Some two million people have fled Syria since the country's uprising against President Assad erupted in March 2011, according to the United Nations.
Over that time, more than four million Syrians have also been internally displaced within the country, including Ahmed, his wife and six children.
Ahmad's family is among dozens of people who have found shelter amid a cluster of lichen-covered ruins outside of Kafer Rouma.
Ahmed held a bottle filled with a greenish liquid to feed his baby daughter.
It was water mixed with herbs because there was no milk, he said.
There is also no running water and no electricity.
Basic food and medicines are lacking.
"I pray to God to curse this pig (Assad) for making us live in caves like in the ancient times," said one woman named Fatima, who said she fled to the ruins with her seven children.
"They open fire on us and they shell us these pigs," she said, giving only her first name for fear of her safety.
The villagers moved their property from their old houses to their temporary accommodation.
They brought with them what they could carry - pots and pans, stoves, torches, plastic tarpaulins.
Children scamper amongst the household goods and ancient stones.
The Syrian army has shelled the ruins from time to time, although no one was killed in the bombardment.
"We never thought we'd have to live with our families in old ruins and caves just to be safe," said one villager, Youssef Ismail.
The ruins in Kafer Rouma are part of some 700 such settlements that dot northwest Syria.
The ancient buildings - usually houses, churches and baths - date from the 1st to the 7th century AD and were abandoned afterwards as trade routes changed.

(Beirut, AFP, 5 Jul 2015) - The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) group on Saturday released a video showing 25 Syrian government soldiers being executed by teenagers in the ancient amphitheatre in the city of Palmyra.
The video documented an execution that reportedly happened shortly after the militant group captured the city on May 21.
It shows the soldiers in green and brown military uniforms being shot dead on the amphitheatre's stage in front of an enormous version of the group's black and white flag.
The executioners all appear to be children or teenagers and are wearing desert camouflage and brown bandanas.
The killings are carried out in front of a relatively sparse crowd of men and some children watching from the ancient theatre's seats.
ISIS reportedly carried out more than 200 executions, including of civilians, in and around Palmyra in the period when it captured the city.
The executions in the Palmyra amphitheatre were first reported on May 27 by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor, less than a week after ISIS captured the city.
At the time, Syria's antiquities director Mamoun Abdelkarim said he feared the killings could signal the start of "the group's barbarism and savagery against the ancient monuments of Palmyra".
"Using the Roman theatre to execute people proves that these people are against humanity," he told AFP.
The Greco-Roman ruins at Palmyra are listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site, and the city's capture by ISIS prompted international concerns for the fate of its spectacular ancient treasures.
So far, ISIS is not reported to have damaged the actual ruins, although it has blown up and desecrated Muslim graves in the city and destroyed a statue outside the Palmyra Museum.
ISIS has regularly released videos of its mass executions, with slick production and gruesome violence that experts say is a key propaganda tool for the group.

(BBC News, 5 Jul 2015) - A video apparently released by the Islamic State group shows 25 men being shot dead in the ancient city of Palmyra, in Syria.
IS said the men were soldiers captured in the city of Homs. They were shot dead inside Palmyra's amphitheatre.
Stills from the video showed the killers to be young males, possibly even as young as 13 or 14.
IS captured the site and the neighbouring city of Palmyra in late May.
The video was distributed by accounts known to be linked with Islamic State militants. It is not clear when it was filmed.
The killings took place on a stage at the front of the amphitheatre before a large black IS flag.
Several hundred men in civilian clothes are filmed sitting on steps watching the shootings. Among them was a young boy.
In close-up shots of the men waiting to be killed, they appear to have been beaten on the face.
Days after IS claimed Palmyra, it executed 20 men in the same amphitheatre.
At the time, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said residents near the site were rounded up and forced to watch the killings.
In May, Mamoun Abdelkarim, Syria's head of antiquities, said: "Using the Roman theatre to execute people proves that these people are against humanity."
Mr Abdulkarim said most of the museum's antiquities had been transferred to Damascus before IS approached the city.
Since then, there have been reports that mines have been planted among some of Palmyra's ruins, and there were claims this week that militants destroyed an ancient sculpture outside Palmyra's museum.
Since capturing the city, IS has also taken control of a military airbase and a notorious prison nearby.
The ancient ruins are situated in a strategically important area on the road between the capital, Damascus, and the contested eastern city of Deir al-Zour.
Fighters with IS started claiming vast swathes of Syria and Iraq in 2014, aided in part by the insecurity generated by Syria's civil war.
More than 230,000 Syrians have died in the war, which began after President Bashar al-Assad's forces tried to put down anti-government protests in March 2011.

PALMYRA, SYRIA — A new video from the bloodthirsty death cult ISIS allegedly shows 25 captured Syrian soldiers executed at the site of ancient Roman ruins in Syria.
The so-called Islamic state gained control of the Syrian town of Palmyra — home to ancient Roman ruins considered archaeological treasures by the United Nations — sometime around May 21.
While some predicted the fundamentalist group would destroy the ruins, ISIS leadership reportedly announced that as the ruins themselves were not "idols" or statues depicting human or animal forms, so the site was spared. Though, a famous statue of a lion and statues at the ruins featuring human faces were reportedly wrecked with sledgehammers.
In a video reportedly released on July 4, the ancient Roman ruins became the backdrop of a murder scene in which 25 ISIS followers who appeared to range in age between 12 and 20 are seen hurting 25 captured Syrian soldiers on to the amphitheater's stage.
After a long reading of the "justifications" for executing the soldiers, the video then shows all 25 soldiers killed by a gunshot to the back of the head. The execution was public and open to all males, including young children.
The new video comes hot on the heels of other sensational ISIS videos that seem to be competing for some sort of "most barbaric" execution competition. Other recent clips from the group have shown victims drowned to death, blown up with a bazooka, beheaded and shot.
For their part, ISIS released video and images showing alleged harsh prisons in Palmyra when it was under the control of the the Syrian regime. ISIS maintains it has liberated the people of the area from the Assad regime, though reports claim up to 400 men, women and children were butchered by the extremist group as they "liberated" Palmyra.

Palmyra (Tadmor تدمر in Syria) at sunset and sunrise...
Palmyra was in ancient times an important city of central Syria, located in an oasis 215 km northeast of Damascus and 120 km southwest of the Euphrates. It has long been a vital caravan city for travellers crossing the Syrian desert and was known as the Bride of the Desert. The earliest documented reference to the city by its pre-Semitic name Tadmor, Tadmur or Tudmur, is recorded in Babylonian tablets found in Mari.
In the mid-first century, Palmyra, a wealthy and elegant city located along the caravan routes linking Persia with the Mediterranean ports of Roman Syria and Phoenicia, came under Roman control. During the following period of great prosperity, the Aramaean inhabitants of Palmyra adopted customs and modes of dress from both the Iranian Parthian world to the east and the Graeco-Roman west.
Palmyra was made part of the Roman province of Syria during the reign of Tiberius. It steadily grew in importance as a trade route linking Persia, India, China, and the Roman empire. In 129, Hadrian visited the city and was so enthralled by it that he proclaimed it a free city and renamed it Palmyra Hadriana. Beginning in 212, Palmyra's trade diminished as the Sassanids occupied the mouth of the Tigris and the Euphrates. Septimius Odaenathus, a Prince of Palmyra, was appointed by Valerian as the governor of the province of Syria. After Valerian was captured by the Sassanids and died in captivity in Bishapur, Odaenathus campaigned as far as Ctesiphon (near modern-day Baghdad) for revenge, invading the city twice. When Odaenathus was assassinated by his nephew Maconius, his wife Septimia Zenobia took power, ruling Palmyra on the behalf of her son, Vabalathus. Zenobia rebelled against Roman authority with the help of Cassius Longinus and took over Bosra and lands as far to the west as Egypt, establishing the short-lived Palmyrene Empire. Next, she attempted to take Antioch to the north. In 272, the Roman Emperor Aurelian finally retaliated and captured her and brought her back to Rome. He paraded her in golden chains but allowed her to retire to a villa in Tibur, where she took an active part in society for years. This rebellion greatly disturbed Rome, and so Palmyra was forced by the empire to become a military base for the Roman legions. Diocletian expanded it to harbor even more legions and walled it in to try and save it from the Sassanid threat. The Byzantine period only resulted in the building of a few churches and much of the city was in ruin.

Travel video about destination Syria.
Syria is an ancient country of culture located between the Mediterranean and the desert. Its ancient desert metropolises, old villages, impenetrable fortresses and biblical harbour towns have witnessed the rich and fascinating history of bygone times.Damascus is the capital of Syria and symbol of culture in the Near East and located a hundred kilometres from the Mediterranean coast. The Kalaa Citadel is situated on the periphery of the old town that was once surrounded by huge walls and it was from there that Saladin fended off the attacks of the Crusaders. The Khan As´Ad Pasha is often referred to as being the most beautiful caravansary in the Near East. Its inner courtyard is covered by eight mighty and partly painted cupolas each of which is supported by four pillars. Set amid the desert savannah of Syria are the proud remains of a unique and mysterious metropolis, Palmyra, a legendary ancient city that was built due to the existence of the Tadmur Oasis. The shortest and fastest route from the Mediterranean to Mesopotamia and Persia travels directly past the Tadmur Oasis thus it was only a question of time until an important trading post was founded there. Around a quarter of a million Bedouins live in Syria’s desert areas. They are nomads who speak Arabic and belong to the Muslim faith and their income is derived from sheep, goats and camels which produce both milk and meat. They travel the desert accompanied by their animals. Further north on the edge of the fertile Al Ghab Ditch is the ancient metropolis of Apameia, one of the most beautiful cities in the Near East. Apart from Bosra and Palmyra this huge city of ruins is one of the most important Hellenist regions in Syria. Syria is the Pearl Of The East. With deserts, wadis and mountains, castles and crusader fortresses, Roman ruins, palaces and mosques. A legendary country between both past and future whose cultural treasures still survive today.

With deserts, wadis and mountains, castles and crusader fortresses, Roman ruins, palaces and mosques. A legendary country between both past and future whose cultural treasures still survive today.

Take a tour of Ancient City of Bosra in Bosra, Syrian Arab Republic -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
The half-standing ruins of this dark-stoned city rise out of the southern Syrian landscape.
Nearly deserted today, Bosra has a great deal of history from thousands of years of habitation by different cultures.
The city is at least old enough to have appeared in historical documents from the fourteenth century BC.
Early in the first millennium AD, Bosra became a part of the Roman Empire, which is the strongest influence seen at work in the ruins.
Since then, it has been the territory of the Byzantine Empire and the Arabs who swept in during the seventh century.
Among the ruined city's Roman and Christian structures, the fortified amphitheater is probably the greatest.
This deep, stadium-like building is mostly intact and gives a taste of what Bosra may once have been like.

Travel video about destination Damascus in Syria.
Damascus is the capital of Syria and is a symbol of culture in the Near East. A hundred kilometres from the Mediterranean coast, the strategically located city was once the capital of the Umayyad.Cannons, the busts of various presidents and military vehicles are displayed in the large courtyard of the Takiyeh Mosque, an ancient Dervish monastery complex. Built in 1554 and designed by Ottoman master architect, Sinan, it also includes an adjoining inn for the numerous pilgrims who travelled to Mecca. Damascus has always been much prized: by the pharaohs and the Babylonian monarch, Nebukadnezar, and later, Alexander The Great. Then came Persian, Roman and Islamic emperors followed by the Crusaders and Mongols. The Kalaa Citadel is situated on the periphery of the old town that was once surrounded by huge walls. It was from here that Saladin fended off the attacks of the Crusaders. The Romans built a fort here that was constantly extended with impressive walls and towers and located directly outside the city wall, the River Barada was also of strategic importance. Although the Mongols destroyed the inner buildings, the fortress walls survived. The Suq is an important part of every Islamic city, a market that originated in ancient times. Thousands of shops in numerous interconnected lanes form the commercial heart of Damascus. In the Gold Suq everything glitters, bracelets, rings and even a large variety of kitchen utensils. Damascus has for thousands of years been a place desired by the powerful. Yet it has managed to survive and is still the most beautiful capital city in the Near East.

Syria, officially the Syrian Arab Republic, is a country in Western Asia, bordering Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea to the west, Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, and Israel to the southwest. Its capital Damascus is among the oldest continuously-inhabited cities in the world. A country of fertile plains, high mountains, and deserts, it is home to diverse ethnic and religious groups, including the Arab, Greeks, Armenians, Assyrians, Kurds, Circassians, Mhallami, Mandeans and Turks. Religious groups include Sunni, Christians, Alawite, Druze religion, Mandeanism and Yezidi. Sunni Arabs make up the largest population group in Syria.
In English, the name "Syria" was formerly synonymous with the Levant (known in Arabic as al-Sham) while the modern state encompasses the sites of several ancient kingdoms and empires, including the Eblan civilization of the 3rd millennium BC. In the Islamic era, Damascus was the seat of the Umayyad Caliphate and a provincial capital of the Mamluk Sultanate in Egypt.
The modern Syrian state was established after World War I as a French mandate, and represented the largest Arab state to emerge from the formerly Ottoman-ruled Arab Levant. It gained independence in April 1946, as a parliamentary republic. The post-independence period was tumultuous, and a large number of military coups and coup attempts shook the country in the period 1949–1971. Between 1958-61, Syria entered a brief union with Egypt, which was terminated by a military coup. The Arab Republic of Syria came into being in 1963, transforming from the Republic of Syria in the Ba'athist coup d'état. Syria was under Emergency Law from 1963 to 2011, effectively suspending most constitutional protections for citizens, and its system of government is considered to be non-democratic. Bashar al-Assad has been president since 2000 and was preceded by his father Hafez al-Assad, who was in office from 1970 to 2000.

Travel video about destination Palmyra in Syria.
The ancient city of Palmyra is located in the Tadmur Oasis in the very heart of the Syrian savannah. Surrounded by arid desert it was once a proud and pulsating trading metropolisand everywhere can be seen relics of a bygone age that was full of myth and mystique. The influence of the legendary oasis city grew due to it having been regarded as a province of Rome. The Romans soon recognized the strategic importance of Palmyra as it was a vital centre of trade in the Near East. Palmyra’s fine buildings such as its Amphitheatre were typical of its impressive architecture. Most of the Tetrapylon has been restored. It towers high above the ancient ruins and the Great Colonnade was once the main street of the historic metropolis. Beyond the city walls in the Valley Of Tombs the mystic atmosphere of the former caravan city becomes apparent. Several well preserved mausoleums give the surreal looking desert landscape a truly ghostly atmosphere. The architecture of these multi-floored burial places are unique in the world. The view from the Arabian fortress extends across the picturesque ruins of the city to the endless horizons of the desert. The oasis and ancient remains of Palmyra look almost surreal as if in a dream yet the old ruins and the mighty fortress really do exist in very tangible and resplendent form.

A young couple from Mississippi faces federal charges after the pair was arrested over the weekend for conspiring and attempting to provide material support and resources to the Islamic State (ISIS) group.
The arrested couple, Jaelyn Delshaun Young, 20, and Muhammad Oda Dakhlalla, 22, had been in fact revealing their plans of joining ISIS to covert FBI agents online since May, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Young allegedly said her skills in math and chemistry and work experience at an analytical lab as well as her partner’s computer science skills would be useful to ISIS. The couple also expressed that they would love to provide medical aid, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Young said the wedding took place in June and the couple would travel to Istanbul and eventually enter Syria to join ISIS using honeymoon as their cover story, CNN reported.
The couple was arrested at the Golden Triangle Regional Airport Saturday morning, just before boarding a plane to Istanbul. They could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted, Reuters reported.

I walked the alley and found an unusual cafe. It is the story cafe. The storyteller is telling the old story cafe. Gore Syrian people to read because they can not understand even more, but people cheer and rejoice. Is it because the atmosphere ... Tourists are easy to indulge in their own Arabian Nights. Tip Trays, laid down in the story is chidatneun towards the climax. "Already I came in third place, very unique. It's one of the places you should see just once and you come to Syria. You can get a feeling of antiquity as if to return. It likes on very old Medina. I'll be a unique and interesting experience. "Finally, my travel story cafe out the end of the night Damascus also goes deeper.

BEIRUT (AP) — Suspected Russian warplanes bombed the outskirts of Islamic State-held Palmyra on Monday, sending smoke rising out of an area that includes a historic castle overlooking the Syrian city's Roman ruins, activists said.

An activist in Palmyra who goes by the name Nasser al-Thaer said at least eight airstrikes struck the area of the Islamic-era castle, sending smoke and clouds of dust rising from the hill where the castle is located. An earlier round of airstrikes on Sunday hit behind the castle, al-Thaer told The Associated Press in a series of telephone messages.
He said it was difficult to assess damage because of the ongoing airstrikes.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 10 suspected Russian airstrikes targeted the castle area in Palmyra, causing damage. The group, which relies on a network of activists inside Syria, did not provide further details.
Palmyra, seized by the IS group in May, is home to world-famous Roman ruins and was one of Syria's most attractive tourist destinations. The Islamic State group has destroyed a number of its renowned sites, including the Temple of Bel and the iconic Arc of Triumph, because it believes ancient artifacts promote idolatry.
Activists also reported suspected Russian airstrikes on a nearby town, Qaryatain, which was seized by IS fighters in August. The Observatory said at least 10 people were killed in the central town. The Local Coordination Committees, another monitoring group, said at least 15 civilians were killed after the airstrikes hit a bread distribution center.

There was no immediate comment from Russian officials. In comments to the Syrian state news agency SANA, a military official said the Russian Air Force, in cooperation with the Syrian Air Force, carried out 131 sorties which resulted in destroying 237 terrorist targets during the past 48 hours, including "destroying fortified bases, shelters, and a heavy machinegun sites used by (IS) in the surroundings of Palmyra."
The airstrikes come a day after Islamic State fighters expanded their presence in the central Homs province. IS fighters seized the town of Mahin, east of Qaryatain, on Sunday, and attacked the majority-Christian town of Sadad. The new expansion brings the IS group closer to a highway linking Damascus to the central Homs province, threatening to endanger government supply routes.
IS strongholds lie in the northern Aleppo province and the eastern Raqqa, Deir el-Zour and Hassakeh provinces. Beyond its presence in central Palmyra, a city that in ancient times served as a caravan route between the Roman Empire and South Asia, the group has a limited presence in the central Hama province and on the outskirts of the capital Damascus.
Russia has said its air campaign is aimed at helping the Syrian government defeat the IS group and other "terrorists," but many of its airstrikes have hit Syrian rebel groups and areas where IS is not present.
Also on Monday, the IS group claimed responsibility for last week's slaying of two Syrian activists in Turkey.
Ibrahim Abdul-Qadir and Fares Hamadi were found dead in an apartment in the Turkish city of Sanliurfa on Friday. Abdul-Qadir was a founding member of "Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently," a collective of activists who document the Islamic State group's atrocities in its de facto Syrian capital. Both men are from Raqqa.
A video posted on social media warns "apostates" that "the arm of the Islamic State will reach you, wherever you are." The video shows Hamadi's body, with his throat slit, in a dark room. Abdul-Qadir was not shown. The video does not make clear whether it was shot in Sanliurfa. It's unclear when the two were killed.

Between 1984 and 1994 I have visited this mysterious city in the Syrian desert a couple of times.
In former times Palmyra was a prosperous trading city between the Orient and the Occident. Here met the traders from the silk road with the Roman traders because Palmyra was part of the Roman Empire.
However, in 273 the city was destroyed by the Romans because the self-constituted empress Zenobia became too powerful to the Romans.

We have seen then that the “little horn of the goat” arose from the Grecian Seleucid Empire in the north based in Syria; this is interpreted for us in Daniel 8 as being the “king of fierce countenance”, which Jesus shows is the Roman power who came and destroyed the temple and caused the daily sacrifice to cease. The “little horn of the goat” is a Greco-Roman power with roots in Babylonian culture, just like the temple of Bel in Syria that ISIS has just destroyed. This power is to “prosper till the indignation be accomplished”. As Syria is the original heartland of the Greco-Roman little horn power on the Grecian goat, events in Syria today are of great interest to students of Bible prophecy.
In Syria today we see a total breakdown of order into complete anarchy. None of the warring groups have the power to establish law and order in the country, while the ferocious fanaticism on all sides does not lead to nation building.
Syria has been a traditional ally of Russia for decades and has a naval facility and base at Tartus in Syria. How far Russia would go to keep this port and its influence in Syria time will tell. At the end of June the National Post reported that, "Putin calls on Middle East nations to unite behind Assad in fight against ‘evil’ in Syria”. Interestingly this week on August 31, the Israel news site YNET reported under the headline, "Russian Jets in Syrian Skies”, that,
"Russia has begun its military intervention in Syria, deploying an aerial contingent to a permanent Syrian base, in order to launch attacks against ISIS and Islamist rebels; US stays silent.
"Russian fighter pilots are expected to begin arriving in Syria in the coming days, and will fly their Russian air force fighter jets and attack helicopters against ISIS and rebel-aligned targets within the failing state.
"According to Western diplomats, a Russian expeditionary force has already arrived in Syria and set up camp in an Assad-controlled airbase. The base is said to be in area surrounding Damascus, and will serve, for all intents and purposes, as a Russian forward operating base.
"In the coming weeks thousands of Russian military personnel are set to touch down in Syria, including advisors, instructors, logistics personnel, technical personnel, members of the aerial protection division, and the pilots who will operate the aircraft.”
Apparently Russia does not want to give up its naval base in Syria! A bold move into Syria by the Russians to fight ISIS will be greeted with silence by the west, who can hardly object when they too are taking pot shots at ISIS from the air. More importantly a bold move into Syria by the Russians would place Russia firmly upon the heartland of the little horn of the Grecian goat.
This little horn power is to be “broken without hand” - Daniel 8:25, just as the image of the kingdom of men seen by Nebuchadnezzar in his dream was broken by a stone cut out of the mountains without hands. So these powers will be broken in an extraordinary manner - by divine intervention.

slamic State (ISIS) militants have destroyed a temple at Syria's ancient ruins of Palmyra, activists said Sunday, realizing the worst fears archaeologists had for the 2,000-year-old Roman-era city after the extremists seized it and beheaded a local scholar.
Palmyra, one of the Middle East's most spectacular archaeological sites and a UNESCO World Heritage site, sits near the modern Syrian city of the same name. Activists said the militants used explosives to blow up the Baalshamin Temple on its grounds, the blast so powerful it also damaged some of the Roman columns around it.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Sunday night that the temple was blown up a month ago. Turkey-based activist Osama al-Khatib, who is originally from Palmyra, said the temple was blown up Sunday. Both said the extremists used a large amount of explosives to destroy it.
Both activists relied on information from those still in Palmyra and the discrepancy in their accounts could not be immediately reconciled, though such contradictory information is common in Syria's long civil war.
The fate of the nearby Temple of Bel, dedicated to the Semitic god Bel, was not immediately known. ISIS supporters on social media also did not immediately mention the temple's destruction.

As the news reports Islamic State militants blow up temple in ancient city of Palmyra.
DAMASCUS - Islamic State militants on Sunday blew up the ancient temple of Baal Shamin in the UNESCO-listed Syrian city of Palmyra, an official said, the latest in a series of cultural relics to be destroyed by the jihadist group.
Famed for well-preserved Greco-Roman ruins, Palmyra was seized from government forces in May, fueling fears the IS jihadists might destroy its priceless heritage as it had done in other parts of Syria and Iraq.
Until Sunday, most of Palmyra's most famous sites had been left intact, though there were reports IS had mined them and the group reportedly destroyed a famous statue of a lion outside the city's museum.
"Daesh placed a large quantity of explosives in the temple of Baal Shamin today and then blew it up causing much damage to the temple," Syria's antiquities chief Maamoun Abdulkarim told AFP, using another name for IS.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based group that monitors the country's civil war, confirmed the destruction of the temple.
IS, which controls swathes of Syria and neighboring Iraq, captured Palmyra on May 21, sparking international concern about the fate of the heritage site described by UNESCO as of "outstanding universal value".
Baal Shamin was built in 17 AD and it was expanded under the reign of Roman emperor Hadrian in 130 AD.
Known as the "Pearl of the desert", Palmyra, which means City of Palms, is a well-preserved oasis 210 kilometers (130 miles) northeast of Damascus.
Its name first appeared on a tablet in the 19th century BC as a stopping point for caravans travelling on the Silk Road and between the Gulf and the Mediterranean.
But it was during the Roman Empire -- beginning in the first century BC and lasting another 400 years -- that Palmyra rose to prominence.
Before the arrival of Christianity in the second century, Palmyra worshiped the trinity of the Babylonian god Bel, as well Yarhibol (the sun) and Aglibol (the moon).
ISIS had mined the ancient site in June before destroying the Lion Statue of Athena -- a unique piece made of limestone that stood more than three meters high (10 feet) that stood outside a museum.
Funerary busts were also destroyed by IS in Palmyra.
Most of the pieces in the museum were evacuated by antiquities staff before IS arrived, though the group has blown up several historic Muslim graves.
IS's harsh version of Islam considers statues and grave markers to be idolatrous, and the group has destroyed antiquities and heritage sites in territory under its control in Syria and Iraq.
The latest developments come just days after IS jihadists beheaded the 82-year-old retired chief archaeologist of Palmyra.
"Our darkest predictions are unfortunately taking place," said Abdulkarim.
"The cella (inner area of the temple) was destroyed and the columns around collapsed," he said.
IS had mined the ancient site in June before destroying the Lion Statue of Athena -- a unique piece made of limestone that stood more than three meters high (10 feet) that stood outside a museum.
Funerary busts were also destroyed by IS in Palmyra.

German chieftain Ballomar 180 AD... Gaius Julius Sohaemus, also known as Sohaemus of Armenia and Sohaemo (Armenian: Սոհեմոս, Greek: Γάϊος Ἰούλιος Σόαιμος, Sohaemus is Arabic for little dagger, flourished 2nd century) was an Emesene Prince and Aristocrat from Syria who served as a Roman Client King of Armenia.
Sohaemus was a prominent person in the Roman Empire in the 2nd century from the Syrian Roman Client Emesene Dynasty. He was a monarch of Assyrian, Greek, Armenian, Medes, Berber and Roman ancestry. The novelist of the 2nd century, his contemporary Iamblichus claims Sohaemus has his fellow-countryman. Iamblichus calls Sohaemus as an Arsacid and Achaemenid, in his lineage and was a descendant of the Median Princess Iotapa, who was once betrothed to the Ptolemaic Prince Alexander Helios. Little is known on Sohaemus’ family and early life prior to becoming King of Armenia. Before becoming King, Sohaemus had been a Roman Senator and served as a Consul in Rome at an unknown date.
In the year 144, Sohaemus succeeded Vologases I as King of Armenia. The circumstances leading to his appointment to the Armenian throne is unknown. Sohaemus was a contemporary to the rule of the Roman emperors: Antoninus Pius, Marcus Aurelius, Lucius Verus and Commodus of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. In the first reign, he ruled from the years from 144 until 161. Not much is known of about his first reign. The novelist Iamblichus living in Armenia at the time of his rule describes his reign as ‘in succession to his ancestors’. This statement can also refer to his former ancestor Sohaemus of Emesa who lived in the 1st century.
In 161 Vologases IV of Parthia, son of the legitimate King Mithridates IV of Parthia, dispatched his troops to seize Armenia and eradicated the Roman legions stationed in the country under the legatus Gaius Severianus. Encouraged by the Spahbod Osroes, Parthian troops marched further West into Roman Syria. After Armenia was seized by the Parthians, Sohaemus became a former ruling monarch living in political exile, possibly living in Rome. Sohaemus was well known in Rome and there were rumors in some quarters that he was not the right man in the right place.
On Roman terms, Parthia had made peace with Rome, Sohaemus was installed as King of Armenia by Lucius Verus in either 163 or 164. The ceremony for Sohaemus in becoming Armenian King for the second time, may have took place in Antioch or Ephesus. In 164, Latin coinage were struck in Armenia with the inscription L. Verus. Aug. Armeniacus and on the reverse Rex Armen(ii)s datus. The time of his second reign is unknown. Sohaemus reigned from 163 perhaps up to 186. Sometime during his reign, Sohaemus was expelled by elements favorable to Parthia. Sohaemus was expelled because a man called Tiridates stirred up trouble in Armenia who had murdered the King of the Osroenes and had thrust his sword in the face of Publius Martius Verus, the Roman Governor of Cappadocia when he rebuked for it. Tiridates only punishment for his crimes was to be exiled to Roman Britain, by Marcus Aurelius.
As a result of Sohaemus’ second expulsion from Armenia; Roman forces went to war with Parthian soldiers. Parthia retook most of their lost territory in 166, as Sohaemus from his expulsion retreated to Syria. After Marcus Aurelius, Lucius Verus and the Parthian rulers intervened in the conflict, the son of Vologases IV of Parthia, Vologases II assumed the Armenian throne in 186.
It has been suggested that the Garni Temple in Armenia, may have been the tomb probably belonging to Sohaemus, based on the construction date as the temple was probably built in 175. The Emesene prince, Julius Alexander may have been the possible son of Sohaemus. Sohaemus is played by Omar Sharif in the 1964 film The Fall of the Roman Empire

Two thousand years ago, the world was ruled by Rome. From England to Africa and from Syria to Spain, one in every four people on earth lived and died under Roman law.
The Roman Empire in the first century AD mixed sophistication with brutality and could suddenly lurch from civilization, strength and power to terror, tyranny and greed.
Leader of the pack
At the head of the pack were the emperors, a strange bunch of men (always men). Few were just OK: some were good - some even were great - but far too many abused their position and power. They had a job for life, but that life could always be shortened. Assassination was an occupational hazard.
The emperors sat at the top of Rome's social order. This was as finely graded as flour. Specific qualifications were needed for Romans to be admitted as equestrians or senators. Even freed slaves had different rights from citizens.
Daily life in ancient Rome
What's more, the social status of any citizen governed the life they led. While all Romans enjoyed the baths and made a feature of the evening meal, their clothes and food, homes and hobbies, were a product of their class.
Those that tried to climb the ranks too quickly were savagely mocked by Petronius, just one of many Roman writers whose observation and wit still breathes life into a society long since dead.
More than a city
Petronius knew his city well, but Rome itself was much more than just one city. Its empire was a vast collection of states, backed up by force. It was not always peaceful. Enemies and rebels like Cleopatra and Boudicca revealed the Roman steel that lay behind its civilization.
Even allowing for the occasional revolt, the empire was an enormous achievement. It was a huge marketplace in which citizens could trade and travel unhindered. This helped the spread of foreign religions like Judaism and early Christianity as far as Rome itself. Slowly, these religions encroached on traditional Roman spirits and gods.
By the end of the first century AD, Rome was even ruled by a Spaniard, Trajan. He was the first of many foreign emperors that showed the Roman Empire to be a vast, multi-cultural melting pot that still has relevance, more than 2,000 years later.

The Roman province of Africa Proconsularis was established after the Romans defeated Carthage in the Third Punic War. It roughly comprised the territory of present-day northern Tunisia, the northeast of modern-day Algeria, and the small Mediterranean Sea coast of modern-day western Libya along the Syrtis Minor.
It was the richest province in the western part of the empire. The Arabs later named roughly the same region as the original province Ifriqiya, a rendering of Africa, from the Latin language.
The African provinces were amongst the wealthiest regions in the Empire (rivaled only by Egypt, Syria and Italy itself) and as a consequence people from all over the Empire migrated into the Roman Africa Province, most importantly veterans in early retirement who settled in Africa on farming plots promised for their military service. Historian Theodore Mommsen estimated that under Hadrian nearly 1/3 of the eastern Numidia population (roughly modern Tunisia) was descended from Roman veterans.
Even so, the Roman military presence of North Africa was relatively small, consisting of about 28,000 troops and auxiliaries in Numidia and the two Mauretanian provinces. Starting in the 2nd century AD, these garrisons were manned mostly by local inhabitants. A sizable Latin speaking population developed that was multinational in background, sharing the north African region with those speaking Punic and Berber languages. Imperial security forces began to be drawn from the local population, including the Berbers

From the Arabian Peninsula, we look at an ancient caravan route through the desert to Syria. ; Along the way, several lush oases in the otherwise barren Syrian desert come to our rescue in the form of Marib and Petra, cite of the great tomb of Aaron that is carved out of a rock face, along with the beautiful city of Palmyra in Syria.
Early development
The period from the middle of the 2nd millennium BCE to the beginning of the Common Era saw societies in Western Asia, the Mediterranean, China and the Indian subcontinent develop major transportation networks for trade.
One of the vital instruments which facilitated long distance trade was portage and the domestication of beasts of burden. Organized caravans, visible by the 2nd millennium BCE, could carry goods across a large distance as fodder was mostly available along the way. The domestication of camels allowed Arabian nomads to control the long distance trade in spices and silk from the Far East to the Arabian Peninsula. Caravans were useful in long-distance trade largely for carrying luxury goods, the transportation of cheaper goods across large distances was not profitable for caravan operators. With productive developments in iron and bronze technologies, newer trade routes—dispensing innovations of civilizations—began to rise.
Maritime trade
Evidence of maritime trade between civilizations dates back at least two millennia. Navigation was known in Sumer between the 4th and the 3rd millennium BCE, and was probably known by the Indians and the Chinese people before the Sumerians. The Egyptians had trade routes through the Red Sea, importing spices from the "Land of Punt" (East Africa) and from Arabia.
Evolution of Indian trade networks. The main map shows the routes since Mughal times, Inset A shows the major prehistorical cultural currents, B: pre-Mauryan routes, C: Mauryan routes, D: routes c. 1st century CE, and E: the "Z" shaped region of developed roads.
Maritime trade began with safer coastal trade and evolved with the manipulation of the monsoon winds, soon resulting in trade crossing boundaries such as the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. South Asia had multiple maritime trade routes which connected it to Southeast Asia, thereby making the control of one route resulting in maritime monopoly difficult. Indian connections to various Southeast Asian states buffered it from blockages on other routes. By making use of the maritime trade routes, bulk commodity trade became possible for the Romans in the 2nd century BCE. A Roman trading vessel could span the Mediterranean in a month at one-sixtieth the cost of over-land routes.
Visible trade routes
The peninsula of Anatolia lay on the commercial land routes to Europe from Asia as well as the sea route from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea. Records from the 19th century BCE attest to the existence of an Assyrian merchant colony at Kanesh in Cappadocia (now in modern Turkey). Trading networks of the Old World included the Grand Trunk Road of India and the Incense Road of Arabia. A transportation network consisting of hard-surfaced highways, using concrete made from volcanic ash and lime, was built by the Romans as early as 312 BCE, during the times of the Censor Appius Claudius Caecus. Parts of the Mediterranean world, Roman Britain, Tigris-Euphrates river system and North Africa fell under the reach of this network at some point of their history.
