Syria (/ˈsɪriə/ (

Arabic pronunciation (help·info)), is a country in Western Asia, bordering Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea to the West, Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, and Israel to the southwest.
In English, the name Syria was formerly synonymous with the Levant, known in Arabic as Sham, while the modern state encompasses the sites of several ancient kingdoms and empires, including the Eblan civilization of the third millennium BC. In the Islamic era, its capital city, Damascus, the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world, was the seat of the Umayyad Caliphate, and a provincial capital of the Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt.
The population of Syria is 74% Sunni, 12% Alawi, 10% Christian, and 3% Druze. Combined, 87% of the Syrian population is Muslim, while the other 10% is Christian, which includes mainly Arab Christians but also Assyrians and Armenians. Major ethnic minorities in Syria include Kurds (9%), Assyrians, Armenians, Turkmens and Circassians. The majority of the population is Arab (90%).

The Khan As´Ad Pasha is often referred to as being the most beautiful caravansary in the Near East. Its inner courtyard is covered by eight mighty and partly painted cupolas each of which is supported by four pillars. Set amid the desert savannah of Syria are the proud remains of a unique and mysterious metropolis, Palmyra, a legendary ancient city that was built due to the existence of the Tadmur Oasis. The shortest and fastest route from the Mediterranean to Mesopotamia and Persia travels directly past the Tadmur Oasis thus it was only a question of time until an important trading post was founded there. Around a quarter of a million Bedouins live in Syria’s desert areas. They are nomads who speak Arabic and belong to the Muslim faith and their income is derived from sheep, goats and camels which produce both milk and meat. They travel the desert accompanied by their animals. Further north on the edge of the fertile Al Ghab Ditch is the ancient metropolis of Apameia, one of the most beautiful cities in the Near East. Around a quarter of a million Bedouins live in Syria’s desert areas. They are nomads who speak Arabic and belong to the Muslim faith and their income is derived from sheep, goats and camels which produce both milk and meat. They travel the desert accompanied by their animals. Further north on the edge of the fertile Al Ghab Ditch is the ancient metropolis of Apameia, one of the most beautiful cities in the Near East. Apart from Bosra and Palmyra this huge city of ruins is one of the most important Hellenist regions in Syria. Syria is the Pearl Of The East. With deserts, wadis and mountains, castles and crusader fortresses, Roman ruins, palaces and mosques. A legendary country between both past and future whose cultural treasures still survive today.

Then came Persian, Roman and Islamic emperors followed by the Crusaders and Mongols. The Kalaa Citadel is situated on the periphery of the old town that was once surrounded by huge walls. It was from here that Saladin fended off the attacks of the Crusaders. The Romans built a fort here that was constantly extended with impressive walls and towers and located directly outside the city wall, the River Barada was also of strategic importance. Although the Mongols destroyed the inner buildings, the fortress walls survived. The Suq is an important part of every Islamic city, a market that originated in ancient times. Thousands of shops in numerous interconnected lanes form the commercial heart of Damascus. In the Gold Suq everything glitters, bracelets, rings and even a large variety of kitchen utensils. Damascus has for thousands of years been a place desired by the powerful. Yet it has managed to survive and is still the most beautiful capital city in the Near East.

Syria, officially the Syrian Arab Republic, is a country in Western Asia, bordering Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea to the west, Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, and Israel to the southwest. Its capital Damascus is among the oldest continuously-inhabited cities in the world. A country of fertile plains, high mountains, and deserts, it is home to diverse ethnic and religious groups, including the Arab, Greeks, Armenians, Assyrians, Kurds, Circassians, Mhallami, Mandeans and Turks. Religious groups include Sunni, Christians, Alawite, Druze religion, Mandeanism and Yezidi. Sunni Arabs make up the largest population group in Syria.
In English, the name "Syria" was formerly synonymous with the Levant (known in Arabic as al-Sham) while the modern state encompasses the sites of several ancient kingdoms and empires, including the Eblan civilization of the 3rd millennium BC. In the Islamic era, Damascus was the seat of the Umayyad Caliphate and a provincial capital of the Mamluk Sultanate in Egypt.
The modern Syrian state was established after World War I as a French mandate, and represented the largest Arab state to emerge from the formerly Ottoman-ruled Arab Levant. It gained independence in April 1946, as a parliamentary republic. The post-independence period was tumultuous, and a large number of military coups and coup attempts shook the country in the period 1949–1971. Between 1958-61, Syria entered a brief union with Egypt, which was terminated by a military coup. The Arab Republic of Syria came into being in 1963, transforming from the Republic of Syria in the Ba'athist coup d'état. Syria was under Emergency Law from 1963 to 2011, effectively suspending most constitutional protections for citizens, and its system of government is considered to be non-democratic. Bashar al-Assad has been president since 2000 and was preceded by his father Hafez al-Assad, who was in office from 1970 to 2000.

The view from the Arabian fortress extends across the picturesque ruins of the city to the endless horizons of the desert. A young couple from Mississippi faces federal charges after the pair was arrested over the weekend for conspiring and attempting to provide material support and resources to the Islamic State (ISIS) group.
The arrested couple, Jaelyn Delshaun Young, 20, and Muhammad Oda Dakhlalla, 22, had been in fact revealing their plans of joining ISIS to covert FBI agents online since May, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Young allegedly said her skills in math and chemistry and work experience at an analytical lab as well as her partner’s computer science skills would be useful to ISIS. The couple also expressed that they would love to provide medical aid, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Young said the wedding took place in June and the couple would travel to Istanbul and eventually enter Syria to join ISIS using honeymoon as their cover story, CNN reported.
The couple was arrested at the Golden Triangle Regional Airport Saturday morning, just before boarding a plane to Istanbul. They could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted, Reuters reported.

Danijel è un poliziotto serbo e Anja una giovane pittrice musulmana. Questo non impedisce loro di trovarsi bene insieme e di flirtare. Finché, nel 1992, scoppia la guerra e i due si trovano su fronti opposti. Danjiel è infatti figlio di un generale al comando delle truppe che operano rastrellamenti e violenze di ogni genere sui musulmani e si trova ad arrestare Anja insieme ad altre donne che verranno umiliate e violentate. La presenza della donna però lo mette in crisi e cerca di proteggerla come può. Fino a quando suo padre verrà a sapere che ha una relazione con un 'nemica'.
Angelina Jolie per la sua opera prima sceglie un tema spinoso come quello del conflitto della ex Jugoslavia e lo fa con il massimo rispetto per la materia trattata al punto di girare il film in serbo. Questo finisce con il costituire uno dei pregi ma anche il principale difetto del film. Perché la Jolie ha scritto e diretto una storia a forti tinte che mette in scena l'orrore di un conflitto che ha scatenato ogni più aberrante pulsione, da parte di chi deteneva la forza delle armi, nei confronti della popolazione e in particolare delle donne.
È di questo che le interessa parlare e di come degli odi atavici possano covare sotto la cenere anche per secoli per poi esplodere distruggendo qualsiasi sentimento pregresso o, comunque, mettendolo in una crisi estrema. Se l'amato o l'amata diventano il nemico lo sguardo sul mondo cambia e ci si trova con la necessità, come fa uno dei militari, di giustificare a se stessi l'orrore con la volontà di costruire un futuro sereno per i propri figli mentre si massacrano quelli degli altri. In Europa abbiamo già avuto modo di vedere film in materia scritti e realizzati da chi questa fase storica l'aveva vissuta sulla propria pelle.
Ci può sembrare quindi che la Jolie abbia la pretesa di raccontare, scegliendo un soggetto che ha in sé una forte carica melodrammatica, una realtà che conosce solo da lontano. Lo spirito che sembra animarla però è diverso. Ciò che le interessava era far conoscere al vasto pubblico americano, grazie alla forza del suo nome di star, un inferno che ha avuto luogo sulla Terra in una nazione (la ex Jugoslavia) che molti suoi concittadini non avrebbero, all'epoca, saputo neppure individuare sulla carta geografica e di cui oggi non ricordano il martirio.
Qui torniamo al pregio/difetto del film. Non girandolo in inglese ma sottotitolandolo, Angelina lo ha di fatto reso distante rispetto proprio dal target a cui mirava, che non vuole vedere film che non siano nella sua lingua madre. È un peccato perché quando, grazie alla passione contrastata che coinvolge i due protagonisti, ci viene mostrato come il mondo sia stato a guardare per anni i più orribili massacri senza intervenire, si vede la Bosnia ma si pensa alla Siria dove la Storia si sta tragicamente ripetendo. "La vita eterna è un'altra vita, in un'altra dimensione". I risorti "saranno come gli angeli, e vivranno in uno stato diverso, che ora non possiamo sperimentare e nemmeno immaginare". Così il Papa riprendendo il Vangelo domenicale, dove Gesù in risposta ai Sadducei, che vogliono ridicolizzare la fede nella resurrezione dei morti, afferma "Dio non è dei morti, ma dei viventi; perché tutti vivono per Lui"
"E questo è il legame decisivo, l'alleanza fondamentale, l'alleanza con Gesù: Lui stesso è l'Alleanza, Lui stesso è la Vita e la Risurrezione, perché con il suo amore crocifisso ha vinto la morte".
E grazie a Gesù, ha spiegato Francesco, tutti "hanno la speranza di una vita ancora più vera di questa."
"La vita che Dio ci prepara non è un semplice abbellimento di questa attuale: essa supera la nostra immaginazione, perché Dio ci stupisce continuamente con il suo amore e con la sua misericordia".
Dunque "non è questa vita -- ha ricordato il Papa - a fare da riferimento all'eternità, ma è l'eternità a illuminare e dare speranza alla vita terrena di ciascuno di noi!
"Se guardiamo solo con occhio umano, siamo portati a dire che il cammino dell'uomo va dalla vita verso la morte".
Ma "Gesù capovolge questa prospettiva":
"e afferma che il nostro pellegrinaggio va dalla morte alla vita: la vita piena! Noi siamo in cammino, in pellegrinaggio verso la vita piena e quella vita piena è qualla che ci illumina nel nostro cammino! Quindi la morte sta dietro, alle spalle, non davanti a noi. Davanti a noi sta il Dio dei viventi...."
Ed ha concluso:
"sta la definitiva sconfitta del peccato e della morte, l'inizio di un nuovo tempo di gioia e di luce senza fine."
Dopo la recita dell'Angelus, il Papa oltre a pregare la Madonna per le vittime del Tifone nelle Filippine, ha voluto ricordare un tragico anniversario, quello della 'notte dei cristalli':
"le violenze della notte tra il 9 e il 10 novembre 1938 contro gli ebrei, le sinagoghe, le abitazioni, i negozi segnarono un triste passo verso la tragedia della Shoah. Rinnoviamo la nostra vicinanza e solidarietà al popolo ebraico, i nostri fratelli più grandi, maggiori. E preghiamo Dio affinché la memoria del passato, la memoria dei peccati passati ci aiuti ad essere sempre vigilanti contro ogni forma di odio e di intolleranza".
Francesco ha quindi reso omaggio alla madre Maria Teresa Bonzel, vissuta nell800, fondatrice delle Povere Suore Francescana dell'Adorazione Perpetua, che sarà beatificata oggi pomeriggio a Paderborn in Germania: una vita la sua di "carità instancabile" verso i più deboli.
Poi ancora Francesco, nell'odierna Giornata del Ringraziamento, celebrata in Italia, ha espresso la sua "vicinanza al mondo agricolo, specialmente ai giovani che hanno scelto di lavorare la terra"
"Incoraggio quanti si impegnano perché a nessuno manchi un'alimentazione sana e adeguata".
Tra i fedeli presenti in piazza San Pietro, il Papa ha rivolto un indirizzo particolare ai fedeli liguri accompagnati dal cardinale Angelo Bagnasco.

Diamante è una piccola località della Calabria la cui unica peculiarità è l'assenza di qualsiasi avvenimento degno di essere raccontato. I tre giovani protagonisti del film, che sognano di sfondare nel mondo del cinema, lo sanno bene. Così come sanno bene che non sarà facile portare a termine il loro cortometraggio, frutto di una storia d'amore - sognata per trent'anni - fra una vecchia zia e un giovane emigrante sparito nel nulla. Nella frenetica ricerca di un attore, i tre - accompagnati da una spigliata fanciulla in cerca di successo - si spingeranno fino a Roma, dove scoprono sulla loro pelle che le amicizie, i contatti e le conoscenze, contano molto di più della voglia di fare. Matrimoni e funerali, partenze e ritorni, forse addii.
L'inno della provincia di Mimmo Calopresti è un'operazione ardimentosa, il cinema che parla di cinema ha perso fascino, non ha più appeal, eppure, dopo aver visto questi tre giovani aspiranti registi affannarsi per portare a termine il loro film, si ha l'impressione di aver visto qualcosa di nuovo, di vitale, di genuino. Questa abbuffata di cinema, vissuta nei suoi luoghi e raccontata dagli occhi dei suoi personaggi dividerà forse la critica, ma rappresenta bene il desiderio atavico di un cinema che ogni tanto ricorda a se stesso i propri vizi e le proprie virtù, parlando di ciò che è stato e di ciò che sarà, con il tocco leggero della commedia all'italiana che non esiste più: non per decorrenza dei termini, ma per manifesta incapacità dei nostri registi contemporanei.
Calopresti no, conosce bene i rischi del caso, li evita tutti e, quando proprio non ne può fare a meno, ammicca quasi scusandosene. Critica feroce al sistema televisivo che fu già del Fellini di Ginger e Fred, non a caso i personaggi divi dei reality show vengono descritti come corpi senza materia, anime votate al delirio di onnipresenza.
La pellicola ricorda di tanto in tanto che ognuno ha i suoi ruoli e le sue competenze, ma rovesciarli è una deriva inevitabile. Registi che fanno gli attori, attori che fanno i registi, critici - televisivi e non - che farneticano dall'alto di un pulpito inesistente. Il viaggio a Roma, nei luoghi sacri del cinema, ormai templi della peggiore delle degenerazioni sociali (la cosiddetta tv), porta a un affrettato rientro a casa.
Ma nulla è perduto: il sud, il sole e il gusto per la buona tavola, convinceranno un grandissimo attore - nientemeno che il divo Depardieu - a recarsi lì in pellegrinaggio per permettere ai tre giovani di coronare il loro sogno. Nella speranza che l'abbuffata, cosi com'è, non si trasformi in bulimia. Delizioso.
