Thousands of people packed the renown Sambadrome, where samba legends Zeca Pagodinho and Martinho da Vila performed classic tunes for the city's guest of honour. Silva is ending his second four-year term. He is legally barred from seeking a consecutive third term. "You should not be thanking me ... it is I who should humbly say thank you to you, the people of Rio de Janeiro, for all the affection and respect you gave me during this whole period," Silva told the crowd on Monday. Silva is going out on January 1st as Brazil's most popular leader, boasting 87 percent approval ratings in one poll. But Brazil's popular leader hinted he may run for the presidency again - less than two weeks before his hand-chosen successor takes office. Silva said during an interview broadcast by Rede TV that he could not deny he might vie again for the leadership of Latin America's largest nation. Many of the social projects implemented during Silva's eight-year government took place in Rio de Janeiro's shantytowns. Silva was also one of the main lobbyists during the city's 2016 Olympic bid, which it won last year. Silva is scheduled to inaugurate a cable car system in the city's Alemao shantytown on Tuesday, as part of his Accelerated Growth Program (PAC). Silva's handpicked successor, Dilma Rousseff, is expected to follow many of Silva's social policies in Rio de Janeiro ahead of the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games.
