Paris Attacks: ISIS Claims Responsibility, France Vows 'Merciless' Response
French President Francois Hollande vowed a "merciless" response to the deadliest attacks on the country's soil since World War II as ISIS claimed responsibility Saturday for a coordinated assault on Paris.
A state of emergency was declared and France deployed 1,500 troops after a near-simultaneous series of explosions and shootings brought the city to a horrified standstill overnight. The death toll rose to 127 and 200 other people were wounded, officials said.
French police were hunting possible accomplices of eight assailants, who attacked concert-goers, cafe diners and soccer fans in at least six locations in the French capital. Authorities said that seven attackers blew themselves up, while the eighth was killed by police.
Speaking early Saturday, Hollande pointed the finger at ISIS for orchestrating the "cowardly" attacks which he described as an "act of war committed by a terrorist army" and organized from abroad. He said France remained "unbreakable," calling for "unity and courage."
Hollande added: "We will work alongside our allies to fight this terrorist menace ... France is strong and even if she is wounded she will get up always and nothing will hold her down, even if we are feeling the grief now ... We will defend ourselves."
Earlier, Hollande vowed to be "merciless" with the nation's foes.

“And what happened in France yesterday cannot be separated from what happened in Beirut two days ago, because this is terrorism. That’s why you shouldn’t look at terrorism as separate arenas, like looking at Syria’s arena, Yemen, Libya, France. Actually, it’s one arena all around the world.”
Asked about where the Syrian intelligence services have any indication or information that either the people who committed this act came from Syria or were in contact with any group in Syria, the President said “No, we don’t have any information about what happened, but it’s not about the names, and who went and who didn’t. We warned about what’s going to happen in Europe three years ago, and we said don’t mess with the fault line in Syria. It’s going to be like an earthquake that will reverberate around the world, and unfortunately the European officials didn’t pay attention to what we said. They thought that we are threatening, and they didn’t learn from what happened at the beginning of this year, from Charlie Hebdo.”
He added “Just giving statements that you are against terrorism means nothing. You have to go and fight terrorism, you have to pursue the correct and right policies, that’s what they have to do.”
In his response to a question whether Syria is ready to fight with France against terrorism if they ask and help the French intelligence services, President Assad said
“They don’t have to ask; they only have to be serious. This is where we are ready to fight terrorism with them.”
“We are ready to fight terrorism with whoever wants to really fight terrorism, and the French government is not serious yet,” he added.
In a message he was asked to send to the French President Francois Hollande, President al-Assad said “Work for the sake and the interest of your people. And the question that any Frenchman would ask today: did the French policy during the last five years do any good to the French people? Actually, no. So, the first thing I’ll ask is to work for the interest of the French people, and if he wants to do that, he has to change his policy.”
Asked about the condition for the Syrian government and the French government to work together, or for the Syrian intelligence services to work with the French intelligence services, President Assad said “You cannot talk about intelligence cooperation without political cooperation. You cannot talk about intelligence cooperation in order to fight terrorism while at the same time your policies, the policies of the same government, are going in the direction of supporting terrorism. That’s what I meant by being serious.”

►PRESIDENT OBAMA SPEAKS ON PARIS TERROR ATTACKS◄
President Obama was briefed late Friday afternoon by his counter-terrorism adviser Lisa Monaco on a wave of attacks in Paris that has killed dozens, the White House said.
Hours before the attacks, Mr. Obama had spoken by phone with French President Francois Hollande about an upcoming climate summit to be held in Paris beginning on Nov. 30. Mr. Obama is planning to attend that gathering.
The two leaders also spoke about their attendance starting Sunday at a G-20 meeting in Turkey, where the civil war in Syria and the fight against the Islamic State are on the agenda. Mr. Obama is slated to depart Washington on Saturday for a week-long trip to Turkey, the Philippines and Malaysia.
Mr. Hollande was attending a soccer match between the French national team and Germany Fridaynight in Paris when explosions rocked the stadium, and he was evacuated.
Speaker Paul Ryan, Wisconsin Republican, said on Twitter, “All of Paris needs our prayers tonight.”

In the immediate aftermath of the savage attacks by cowards upon Paris, France’s President Francois Hollande true to his oath of office announced France will be merciless in their pursuit of these savage murders and their supporters.
Within twenty-four hours French jets bombed ISIS locations in Syria. As soon as the savages attacked Paris, the French locked down their borders. Now contrast that to the USA when on September 11th, 2001 no borders were locked down, but erased.
Maybe one day in the USA we will get a president who understands and maintains fidelity to his or her oath of office.

Saleh is one of three brothers believed to be involved in the attacks.
On Sunday,... several AK-47s were found in an abandoned car which is believed to have been used by the attackers.
Police have also named one of the attackers as French citizen Omar Ismail Mostefai .
He was apparently known to security services.
Mostefai is believed to be one of seven suspects killed during the attacks.
Away from the investigation,... there are reports French President Francois Hollande wants a three-month state of emergency.
An extension beyond 12 days requires parliamentary approval.
And to remember the innocent civilians killed in Friday′s attacks,... thousands of mourners gathered outside Notre Dame Cathedral.

Nicolas Sarkozy suggested that France could work with Russia to destroy ISIL. Speaking after a meeting with French president Francois Hollande at the Elise Palace, he said there can’t be two coalitions in Syria. The former president, who now leads the conservatives, added that he’s told Hollande that drastic security changes and a new European policy on immigration are required to ensure the safety of French people.

On Friday evening, eight heavily armed gunmen wearing suicide vests opened fire and detonated bombs at locations across Paris, killing at least 129 people and injuring more than 300 in Europe’s deadliest terrorist attack in over a decade. Soon after, the French government declared a state of emergency and put the capital city on lockdown. Residents of Paris were warned not to leave their homes.
On Saturday, the Islamic State claimed responsibility for the coordinated assaults. A Syrian passport was found near one of the suicide attackers, and a Greek official later told reporters it belonged to a man entered Europe through Greece in October. French President Francois Hollande referred to the massacre as “an act of war that was committed by a terrorist army, a jihadist army.”
Hours after the attack, VICE News went out into the streets and witnessed a city in mourning. At the Place de la République, reaction to the mass killings was mixed. Some French citizens issued pleas for tolerance and unity in the days ahead. Many expressed fear about future Islamic State attacks. And others argued the shootings would inspire a backlash against the ongoing flow of refugees into Europe.

On the evening of 13 November 2015 a series of coordinated terrorist attacks—consisting of mass shootings, suicide bombings and hostage-taking—occurred in Paris, France and Saint-Denis, its northern suburb. Beginning at 21:16 CET, six mass shootings and three separate suicide bombings near the Stade de France occurred.[12][13] The deadliest attack was at the Bataclan theatre, where attackers took hostages and engaged in a stand-off with police which ended at 00:58 on 14 November.
At least 129 people were killed, 89 of them at the Bataclan theatre. A further 352 people were injured by the attacks, including 99 people described as being in a critical condition. In addition to the civilian casualties, seven attackers were killed and authorities continued to search for any accomplices that remained at large.[2] Prior to the attack, France had been on high alert since the January 2015 attacks in Paris that killed 17 people, including civilians and police officers French President François Hollande announced a state of emergency, the first since the 2005 riots, and placed temporary controls on the country's borders. The first citywide curfew in Paris since 1944 was also put in place.[19]
On 14 November, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS) claimed responsibility for the attacks.[5][20][21] Their motive was retaliation for French involvement in the Syrian Civil War and Iraqi Civil War.[10][22] Hollande said the attacks were organised from abroad by ISIS, "with internal help", and described them as "an act of war." The attacks were the deadliest in France since the Second World War and the deadliest in the European Union since the Madrid train bombings in 2004.

France is a country at war. That was the view of French President Francois Hollande in the immediate aftermath of the Paris attacks on Friday.
A warning that has been reiterated by Prime Minister Manuel Valls, who says France has been at war for months - and remains at risk from new attacks.
Their comments raise important questions about what France and Europe should do next.
If France is at war, is it war with the ideas driving these kind of attacks or with the people carrying them out? Should that war focus on what's happening in France or the Middle East?
The French reaction includes carrying out more air strikes in Syria and rounding up dozens of suspects related to Friday's attacks.
But what comes next?

Great vintage footage and interviews of veteran French men who were drafted, of Harkis (Algerians fighting for the French) and European settlers who had to leave Algeria after it became independent again in 1962. Many Algerians in turn immigrated to France and all who were involved one way or another in the fight bear the scars of the conflict even to this day.
Until 1999 this war was unacknowledged by the French government. It was only after Jacques Chirac recognized it officially that the oppressive silence was lifted and people concerned started to talk about it.
What strikes me the most is to see old men weep? Men are supposed not to let their emotions out but how good is it for a society when mental agony remains a taboo subject? How good can such a man be to his wife and children? To society at large? What values will he transmit to the generation that is following him if essential issues of human rights expressed through war and foreign policy cannot be addressed?
This conflict bears striking similarities with the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. People, men, fight to free their country from foreign occupation. As simple as that. They are "irregulars" because they are not part of a state-ruled army but what if their leader is corrupt and a traitor, then who will fight to free their country? Are they supposed to accept the occupation? Of course not! But by joining the resistance they become "unlawful combatants" and are not protected by the Geneva Convention. The French used this reasoning, just like Busk Jr did after the invasions in Iraq and Afghanistan.
History repeats itself, .

It is the story of the French General Charles de Gaulle's election as French President and his role in the Algerian War.
About the Algerian War:
The Algerian War, also known as the Algerian War of Independence or the Algerian Revolution (Arabic: الثورة الجزائرية), was a war between France and the Algerian independence movements from 1954 to 1962, which led to Algeria gaining its independence from France. An important decolonization war, it was a complex conflict characterized by guerrilla warfare, maquis fighting, terrorism, the use of torture by both sides, and counter-terrorism operations. The conflict was also a civil war between loyalist Algerians supporting a French Algeria and their insurrectionist Algerian Muslim counterparts.
Effectively started by members of the National Liberation Front (FLN) on November 1, 1954, during the Toussaint Rouge ("Red All Saints' Day"), the conflict shook the foundations of the weak and unstable French Fourth Republic (1946–58) and led to its replacement by the Fifth Republic with a strengthened Presidency, with Charles de Gaulle acting in the latter role. Although the military campaigns led against Algerian nationalists were complete successes, with most prominent FLN leaders killed or arrested and terror attacks effectively stopped, the brutality of the methods employed failed to win hearts and minds in Algeria, alienated support in Metropolitan France and discredited French prestige abroad.
In 1961, President Charles de Gaulle decided to give up Algeria, although it was regarded as an integral part of France, after conducting a referendum showing huge support for Algerian independence. The planned withdrawal led to a state crisis, to various assassination attempts on de Gaulle, and some attempts of military coups. Most of the former were carried out by the Organisation de l'armée secrète (OAS), an underground organization formed mainly from French military personnel supporting a French Algeria, which committed a large number of bombings and murders in both Algeria and the homeland to stop the planned independence.
Upon independence, in 1962, 900,000 European-Algerians (Pieds-noirs) fled to France, in fear of the FLN's revenge, within a few months. The majority of Algerian Muslims who had worked for the French, were disarmed and left behind as the treaty between French and Algerian authorities declared that no actions could be taken against them. However, the Harkis in particular, having served as auxiliaries with the French army, were regarded as traitors by the FLN and between 50,000 and 150,000 Harkis and family members were murdered by the FLN or lynch-mobs, often after being abducted and tortured.

France has vowed to scale up its military campaign to destroy ISIS following last week′s deadly attacks in Paris.

Amid all this... ISIS has released a new video, threatening further attacks.

French President Francois Hollande says France is intensifying its military campaign in Syria to root out terrorism.
"We are at war against jihadist terrorists who threaten the whole world, not only France."
Addressing a special joint session of parliament on Monday, Hollande called for a meeting of the UN Security Council to respond to the deadly Paris attacks and to prevent future terrorism.
The French leader is expected to sit down with U.S. President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin in the coming days to form a united coalition.
Hollande also said he would seek to ammend the French constitution so the nation can better deal with modern terrorist threats on top of extending the current national state of emergency by three months.
A government source told AFP that the French government is also considering conducting surveillance on citizens returning from Syria.
Threats of terrorism are not isolated to France...
ISIS also released a new video Monday, saying that countries conducting air strikes on Syria would suffer a similar fate... and promised specifically to target Washington, D.C.

President Barack Obama is expected to address the G20 Summit Monday morning in Turkey.
President Obama on Monday stressed solidarity with the French people after deadly attacks rocked that nation.
"ISIS is the face of evil," Obama said at the conclusion of the G20 summit in Antalya,Turkey. "Our goal is to destroy this barbaric organization."
Three teams of terrorists — all outfitted with suicide vests and armed with Kalashnikovs — swarmed six locations in Paris on Friday night and killed 129 people in a spree of shootings and explosions. France's president called the attacks — which ISIS claimed responsibility for — an "act of war" and on Sunday night launched airstrikes on the terror group's de facto capital of Raqqa, Syria.
Obama underscored that the wave of terror attacks in Paris and the fight against ISIS necessitate that the two nations work more closely together to share intelligence — efforts that are currently underway.
"Paris is not alone," Obama said highlighting attacks in Beirut, Turkey and Iraq.
Obama also pushed back against the assertion that his administration's policy in Syria is problem-plagued.
"We play into the ISIL narrative when we act as if they are a state and we use routine tactics used to fight a state that is not a state," Obama said using the alternative name for the terrorist group. "That's not what is going on here. These are killers with fantasies of glory."
Last month, the White House announced that the U.S. will send a small number of U.S. special operations forces into Syria as part of a strategy shift in Syria.Obama and his administration have come under mounting pressure amid signs the anti-ISIS coalition has stalled or at least failed to turn the tide against the militants — including the recent Pentagon decision to abandon a failed program to train and equip Syrian rebels.

However, senior defense officials tell NBC News there are no active plans to put U.S. ground troops into Iraq and or Syria in the war against ISIS. In addition the US military, including Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Joe Dunford and the past chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey have made no recommendations to the president to launch a ground war and, according, to one senior defense official there is no inclination among military leadership to do so.

The president also pushed back against calls to reject Syrian refugees. Earlier this year the Obama administration said the U.S. would take in at least 10,000 Syrian refugees in the next fiscal year as European nations grapple with the surge of thousands of people from war-torn regions in the Middle East and Africa.
Over the weekend the governors of Michigan and Alabama said they would work to bar Syrian refugees from entering their states.
"Slamming the doors in their faces would be a betrayal of our values," Obama said. Syrian "refugees are the victims of terrorism."
