EDUCATION IN SYRIA
The latest attack by Syrian regime forces on a nursery school in Aleppo killing 11 children has once again drawn attention to the issue of the future of the young generation Syrians. The question of how those students will be able to earn a living if they can not be educated because their schools are being targeted by a regime that is supposed to protect them is a hard one to answer. About 3.5 million Syrian children have been deprived of a proper education inside and outside the country. More than 8 thousand Syrian schools have been destroyed and another 6 thousand 320 are closed or rendered uninhabitable. Other schools are used as shelters for the millions of people who are internally displaced in the country. Regime airstrikes have targeted the schools in opposition-controlled regions and claimed the lives of innocent students and teachers. Syrian families therefore must often choose whether to take the risk their children may die or will be illiterate.
A PARTIAL SOLUTION
Turkey has made huge efforts to overcome the problem faced by the 1 million 700 hundred thousand Syrians it hosts in camps or cities in getting an adequate education for their children. The Turkish government has founded hundreds of schools all over the country for Syrian students. Temporary schools have also been established inside refugee camps in Turkey for Syrians. Moreover, Syrian students are welcome in Turkish schools as well if they wish to continue their education. More than 8000 Syrian students are studying in Turkish schools currently. Germany praised the policy of providing education to Syrians in Turkey and promised to provide assistance. However, the situation for Syrian refugees in other countries may be less positive.
A FUTURE OF UNCERTAINTY
Since the beginning of the Syrian civil war more than 3 million 442 hundred thousand Syrians have become refugees in neighbouring countries such as Turkey, Lebanon, Iraq, and Egypt as well as some European countries. Even in the medium to long-term the situation for Syrians may not be considerably better than it is now, as the country’s future will depend on a generation who have suffered from a lack of education and been separated worldwide. As all children they have aims in life but due to many being killed, wounded or exiled, they face difficulty in fulfilling their dreams and rebuilding Syria.Vast efforts are still required to educate thousands of Syrian students, which will remain a challenge in the years to come.
