Assyrian Christians fight to defend their communities in Syria
The Syriac Military Council (MFS) was established in January 2013 to protect the marginalised Assyrian Christian communities in Syria.
They have fought to defend themselves from the Islamic State, Al-Nusra Front and Ahrar al-Sham and frequently work in tandem with the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG).

Mathew grew up in Australia, but he is truly Assyrian! Please listen to his plea for help for his people! While many still suffer to this day! This has been an on going fight for the Assyrian people.
There have been 33 genocides since 339 A.D., all but three committed by Muslims. This averages to one every 50 years. In other words, for the past 1675 years there has been genocide in the living memory of every Assyrian generation.
In 2014 the Islamic State (IS or ISIS) started committing genocide against the Assyrians of North Iraq and Syria. It began by IS issuing new Sharia rules for Mosul's residents. And it is still going on to this day!
Please Help the Assyrian people by at the least sharing this video!

BIBLEBOOKCLUB: OT: 2 Kings 17:1-18:12, NT: Acts 20:1-38, Psalm:148:1-14, Proverbs: 18:6-7
In today's OT scripture, the King of Assyria replaced Israel with foreigners who didn't know how worship the God of Israel and didn't know his requirements, so many were killed by Lions. They asked the King to Assyria to send them people who knew how to serve the God of Israel. They king of Assyria sent a Jewish exiled Priest and let them teach them how to serve and worship God. But God said to the descendants of Jacob "YOU MUST NEVER FORGET THE COVENANT I MAD WITH YOU; YOU MUST WORSHIP ONLY THE LORD AND HE WILL SAVE YOU FROM ALL OUR ENEMIES" FRIENDS, ALL THE PEOPLE THAT COME INTO OUR COUNTRIES BRING AND SERVE THEIR OWN GODS. BUT WE MUST ONLY SERVE THE LORD GOD OF ISRAEL! THEN GOD WILL FIGHT FOR US AND WE WILL HAVE THE VICTORY!

Assyrian Music has started to make a turn for the better.
How many times have you wanted to listen to Assyrian music but have told yourself, I really don't want to hear the same old Assyrian rhythm with the irritating horn and that overpowering drum, with the lyrics of someone walking up a mountain killing a bear with his rifle.
Does that Assyrian music have it's time and place?
Yes I believe it does.
Do I still listen to that kind of Assyrian Music?
Yes I do
Do you remember the times when you used to go to an Assyrian weddings and the band used to consist of a real drummer, bass player, guitar player, real percussion player, 2 keyboard players and possibly even a saxophone?
Now I realise that the bands are getting smaller and louder.
To all the 2 - 3 piece Assyrian bands out there: Turn it down PLEASE, my ears are still ringing! :)
No it doesn't sound better when it's louder and no, people don't shake their shoulder more. By the way that was a joke.
In this podcast we interview creative Assyrian Musician from the band Azadoota Robin Zarwanda.
Would you like to see an Assyrian band that has 3 piece horn section, bongoes, timbales, bass guitar, solid drums, guitar with awesome patriotic Assyrian lyrics, playing funky, afro cuban, brazilian with a twist of salsa?
Then look no further because Azadoota will get you excited and once again enjoy listening to Assyrian music. Youtube has been a great place for Robin to get his name and band out there and he has been quite savvy when it comes to getting his music out there over the internet.
Check out Azadoota's YouTube channel:
Azadoota's web page:
How does Azadoota create awareness through their Assyrian music?
Robin has been doing his activism in another way and the thing is, he just does it without even realising. He has such a passion and love for Assyrians that he will go to extremes to educate people not only Assyrians but other nationalities on Assyrians, Assyrian music and other Assyrian cultures.
In one instance he was on a television segment showing the public how to cook Shirwa ooRizza. Although I couldn't find the footage but here's the blog written by Adelaide Independent News, http://indaily.com.au/food-and-wine/2014/02/25/taste-world-shirwa-oorizza-lamb-stew/

My interview with George Maragolof over the current genocide taking place in Iraq. There are a host of problems facing Assyrian Christians today. In my interview, I discuss how the government of Iraq is currently rejecting funds aimed at helping Assyrians. I also stress the importance of “unity” and how everyone, regardless of country or denomination, need to take a stand against these atrocities.
“I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment.” 1 Corinthians 1:10

The interview with Sean Hannity that the pastor references is located here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6ZgNf0T7Gg
I had a great discussion with Pastor Cliff Lawton about the genocide that is being perpetuated against the Assyrian Christians in both Iraq and Syria. We both voiced our frustrations over this administration's lack of action. We need our own province. We have the beginnings of a military force that will protect the region - the Nineveh Plain Protection Units (NPU). But, we desperately need funding. Please continue to pray for all of those who are being persecuted within the Near East. And, please contact your representatives about “arming the Assyrian Christians.” It is vital that you call us by name in your communications with public officials. I also ask for you to please continue both volunteering and donating to the following charities:

Directed By: John-Roger, Dss & Jsu Garcia, Dss
Aramaic (Classical Syriac: ܐܪܡܝܐ Aramaya) is a family of languages or dialects, belonging to the Semitic family. More specifically, it is a part of the Northwest Semitic subfamily, which also includes Canaanite languages such as Hebrew and Phoenician. The Aramaic script was widely adopted for other languages and is ancestral to both the Arabic and modern Hebrew alphabets.
During its over 3,000 years of written history,[2] Aramaic has served variously as a language of administration of empires and as a language of divine worship. It was the lingua franca of the Neo-Assyrian Empire, Neo-Babylonian Empire and Achaemenid Empire, the day-to-day language of Yehud Medinata and of Judaea (539 BC – 70 AD), the language that Jesus probably used the most,[3][4][5] the language of large sections of the biblical books of Daniel and Ezra, and is the main language of the Talmud and Syriac Christianity, in particular the Assyrian Church of the East, the Chaldean Catholic Church, the Ancient Church of the East, the Saint Thomas Christian Churches in India, the Syriac Orthodox Church and the Maronite Church.[6] However, Jewish Aramaic was different from the other forms both in lettering and grammar. Parts of the Dead Sea Scrolls are in Jewish Aramaic showing the Jewish lettering, related to the Hebrew script. Aramaic was also the original language of the Bahrani people of Eastern Arabia.[7]
Aramaic's long history and diverse and widespread use has led to the development of many divergent varieties, which are sometimes considered dialects, though they are distinct enough that they are sometimes considered languages. Therefore, there is not one singular, static Aramaic language; each time and place rather has had its own variation. Aramaic is retained as a liturgical language by certain Eastern Christian churches, in the form of Syriac, the Aramaic variety by which Eastern Christianity was diffused, whether or not those communities once spoke it or another form of Aramaic as their vernacular, but have since shifted to another language as their primary community language.
Modern Aramaic is spoken today as a first language by many scattered, predominantly small, and largely isolated communities of differing Christian, Jewish, and Mandean ethnic groups of West Asia[8]—most numerously by the Assyrians in the form of Assyrian Neo-Aramaic and Chaldean Neo-Aramaic—that have all retained use of the once dominant lingua franca despite subsequent language shifts experienced throughout the Middle East. The Aramaic languages are now considered endangered.[9]

The Assyrian people lived in Ancient Mesopotamia and contributed majorly in that they invented many things and had a powerful army. This video teaches students many things about the Assyrian people, focusing mainly on their clever inventions and their extremely powerful army. The army focused on siege warfare, using fear as their main weapon. When people would hear the Assyrians were coming, many would simply surrender to the Assyrians, due to their reputation for painfully killing and gruesomely slaughtering whoever came in their way. One tactic they used was to throw an enemy's limb over the city-state's wall that they were invading to strike fear in their enemies hearts. They also had battering rams with iron tips and wheels to knock down the walls of opposing city-states. Another reason the Assyrian army was so powerful was that they were some of the only people to use iron weapons, which were much stronger than the other weapons of the time. Students will also learn about Assyrian inventions. One invention they had was the first written language, Cuneiform. Cuneiform used wedge-shaped symbols. Also, they will learn about the first set of written laws, Hammurabi's code, which basically said an eye-for-an- eye. Another Assyrian invention was the use of flood irrigation which was a way to water their crops very efficiently. Altogether, they will learn about many things like Assyrian inventions and warfare.

Three Armies in Hasakah Join Forces to Fight against Extremists

Three armies, namely the Syrian government forces, the People's Protection Units (YPG) and the Assyrian Sootoro in Hasakah are fighting together against Islamic State (IS) extremists.
The YPG, formed to protect Kurdish areas, has become a major opponent of the IS. Originally it was co-operated with Syrian opposition fighters, but now it is fighting with the government forces.
"We don't have a definite number of our troops. Our troops are scattered in different areas, from Singar on the Iraq border to Kobane on the Turkish border, and are active in the northern part of Syria whose width reaches 700 kilometers," said Rawand Rojava, Military Relations Leader of YPG in Hasakah.
During the Hasakah siege, the YPG cut down the supplement for the IS extremists, and it played a vital role.
However, the YPG still faces a lot of problems if it wants to fight by itself.
"We are in dire short of weapons and ammunition. We could buy them from the black market or through other channels. But the price is very high and it is very difficult. The quality also cannot be guarranteed, and the phenomenon like the stuck of bullets can happen," said Rawand Rojava.
And there’s another force called the Assyrian Sootoro. Though there’s only around 200 people, it still plays a significant role.
"In Assyrian, Sootoro means shield, the shield for Assyrian Christians. We, like other fighting units, are one of the Syrian government forces, and we are fighting under the same flag," said Razouk Elia, Leader of Sootoro.
The Assyrian Sootoro is a troop that is well-trained and is very flexible. With the invasion of IS extremists, Assyrian people were under genocide, and their traditional culture was facing devastating blows.
"As an Assyrian, I have a power in my heart urging me to fight on this land. We have a long history, and once built an ancient empire. We must fight to protect this culture, and be ready to sacrifice ourselves," said Razouk Elia.
Three armies and one surrounded city, under the attack of Islamic State (IS) extremists. Only Hasakah residents know who will be the winner and who will be the real loser.

Around 200 Assyrians gathered in a church in Beirut on Thursday to express their solidarity after Islamic State militants abducted at least 70 Assyrian Christians in Syria earlier that week.
Assyrians are indigenous Iraqi or Syrian Christians who trace their roots back to the ancient Mesopotamians.
Some of those living in Lebanon have recently fled their homes in Iraq and Syria amid fears of violence by Islamic State militants.
Others came to Lebanon to work, before the conflict started.
The Sunni extremists, who follow a radical interpretation of Islam, have repeatedly targeted religious and ethnic minorities in Syria and Iraq since seizing control of large swaths of both countries.
One child at the gathering held a banner reading " Assyrian Genocide 1915 Never Again".
A few young men said they were preparing to go to Syria to defend their homes against the Islamic State group.
Islamic State militants snatched more hostages from homes in northeastern Syria over the past three days, bringing the total number of Christians abducted to over 220 in the one the largest hostage-takings by the extremist group, activists said Thursday.

A century on from the Assyrian Genocide ('Seyfo'), the Assyrian people again find themselves confronting an existential threat in the face of the turmoil, violence and uncertainty being unleashed across the region.
Writer Mardean Isaac spoke at Oxford University, where he once studied, discussing issues including the ethnic cleansing of the Assyrians of Syria and Iraq by the Islamic State and other extremist groups, the relationship between Assyrians and the Iraqi and Syrian states as well as the Kurdistan Regional Government and the emergent Kurdish led administration in north-east Syria, the role and position of the Syriac Churches (principally the Chaldean Catholic and Syriac Orthodox Churches and the Assyrian Church of the East) in relation to the crisis facing Assyrians, the direction of Assyrian political parties and security forces and the dynamic between the Assyrian diaspora and homeland populations.
The fate of the Assyrian people in their ancestral homelands is of course tied to the crisis facing the region as a whole, which forms the context of Mardean's discussion.

The Arameans, or Aramaeans, (Aramaic: ܐܪ̈ܡܝܐ, ארמיא ; ʼaramáyé) were a Northwest Semitic semi-nomadic and pastoralist people who originated in what is now modern Syria (Biblical Aram) during the Late Bronze Age and the Iron Age. Large groups migrated to Mesopotamia where they intermingled with the native Akkadian (Assyrian and Babylonian) population. A large proportion of Syriac Christians in modern Syria still espouse an Aramean identity to this day, though few now speak the Western Aramaic language.
The Arameans never had a unified nation; they were divided into small independent kingdoms across parts of the Near East, particularly in what is now modern Syria. After the Bronze Age collapse, their political influence was confined to a number of Syro-Hittite states, which were entirely absorbed into the Neo-Assyrian Empire by the 8th century BC.
By contrast, the Aramaic language came to be the lingua franca of the entire Fertile Crescent, by Late Antiquity developing into the literary languages such as Syriac and Mandaic. Scholars have used the term "Aramaization" for the process by which the Akkadian/Assyro-Babylonian peoples became Aramaic-speaking during the later Iron Age.
Assyrian genocide

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aramean_Genocide
The Assyrian Genocide (also known as Sayfo or Seyfo, Syriac: ܩܛܠܐ ܕܥܡܐ ܣܘܪܝܝܐ or ܣܝܦܐ) refers to the mass slaughter of the Assyrian population of the Ottoman Empire during the 1890s and the First World War, in conjunction with the Armenian genocide and Greek genocide. The Assyrian civilian population of upper Mesopotamia (the Tur Abdin region, the Hakkâri, Van, and Siirt provinces of present-day southeastern Turkey, and the Urmia region of northwestern Iran) was forcibly relocated and massacred by the Muslim Ottoman (Turkish) army, together with other armed and allied Muslim peoples, including Kurds, Chechens and Circassians, between 1914 and 1920, with further attacks on unarmed fleeing civilians conducted by local Arab militias. Estimates on the overall death toll have varied. Providing detailed statistics of the various estimates of the Churches' population after the genocide, David Gaunt accepts the figure of 275,000 deaths as reported at the Treaty of Lausanne and ventures that the death toll would be around 300,000 because of uncounted Assyrian-inhabited areas, leading to the elimination of half of the Assyrian nation.
The Assyrian genocide took place in the same context as the Armenian and Pontic Greek genocides. In these events, close to three million Christians of Syriac, Armenian or Greek Orthodox denomination were murdered by the Young Turks regime.
Since the "Assyrian genocide" took place within the context of the much more widespread Armenian genocide, scholarship treating it as a separate event is scarce, with the exceptions of the works of David Gaunt and Hannibal Travis. In 2007, the International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS) reached a consensus that "the Ottoman campaign against Christian minorities of the Empire between 1914 and 1923 constituted a genocide against Armenians, Assyrians, and Pontian and Anatolian Greeks. The IAGS referred to the work of Gaunt and Travis in passing this resolution. Gregory Stanton, the President of the IAGS in 2007--2008 and the founder of Genocide Watch, endorsed the "repudiation by the world's leading genocide scholars of the Turkish government's ninety-year denial of the Ottoman Empire's genocides against its Christian populations, including Assyrians, Greeks, and Armenians.
