http://democracynow.org - This week marks the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide. On April 24, 1915, the Young Turk government of the Ottoman Empire began a systematic, premeditated genocide against the Armenian people — an unarmed Christian minority living under Turkish rule. An estimated 1.5 million Armenians were exterminated through direct killing, starvation, torture and forced death marches. Another million fled into permanent exile. Today, the Turkish government continues to deny this genocide, and since becoming president, President Obama has avoided using the term "genocide" to describe it. We’re joined by Peter Balakian, professor of humanities at Colgate University and author of "The Burning Tigris: The Armenian Genocide and America’s Response"; Anahid Katchian, whose father was a survivor of the 1915 Armenian genocide; and Simon Maghakyan, an activist with Armenians of Colorado. We also play a recording of Armenian broadcaster and writer David Barsamian’s mother recalling her experience during the Armenian genocide as a young girl. Araxie Barsamian survived, but her parents and brothers did not.

Exactly one century ago, a crime against humanity took place in what was then the Ottoman Empire. Despite being carried out on an enormous scale, there is still no atonement or official recognition for that campaign of terror and death. During WWI, Armenian people faced a deliberate massacre intended to annihilate their whole nation. An atrocity that inspired Hitler and whose victims are, even to this day, denied justice. It was genocide.

The following speech is a call to the Armenian people, to fight for freedom, to liberate Historical Armenia from the barbarian Turkish government who keeps on denying the Armenian Genocide where they killed over 2 million of our nation.
Between 1894-1896 they massacred 600,000 Armenians.
On April 24, 1915 they declared & started the first Genocide of the 20th century, from 1915 until 1923 they killed over 1,500,000 defensless Armenians of all ages including children, women & elderly people...
They are a barbarian & violent nation which occupies the lands of our forefathers where we lived over 4000 years...
They ravished our own homes & businesses, our wealth & treasures, our fields & rivers and our mountains...
They also ravished more than 2300 churches & cathedrals, historical palaces & castles which were all built by Armenians...
We are the children of survived Armenians living as immigrants around the world because of their barbarian acts, because of their greed, because they wanted to build a new country by stealing our nation and neighboring nations...
They removed the crosses from the top of all christian churches and replaced them with their Islamic Moon symbol and converted most of the Christian cathedrals to Mosques...
What a dirty nation...
A nation which invents nothing but stealing, even their language is not theirs, even their alphabet is not theirs, even their country is not theirs, everything in their culture is not theirs, they stole everything from other nations, but we must admit that they invented agressive types of crimes & used for beheadings with a criminal barbarian acts...
Open the Historical archives of World War One, read the Historical evidences, watch the photos of the Armenian Genocide, read the testimony of all Ambassadors & Consuls which served at Ottoman Empire during world war one, read the testimonies of the Missionaries & Doctors which were serving at that period on our Historical Lands, and listen to their testimonies as eye witnesses , and for sure you will acknowledge the Armenian Genocide...
Let all Nation acknowledge the Armenian Genocde just like the 21 Nations which already did.
You cant forgive these kind of barbarian crimes, its a massacre, its a genocide...
We ask all nations to support the Armenian people to Liberate our Historical Country and to punish the Turkish government for its crimes, guilts & wrong doings...
The time has arrived for all Armenians to cultivate the most powerful qualities as freedom fighters, to be ready mentally , spiritually and physically as soldiers to liberate the lands of our forefathers our Historical Armenia.
Get ready all to join us soon to shake the world, get ready for sacred war to bring justice, to protect our rights, and our fatherland forever...
Get ready to see the Armenian flag shining on mount Ararat.

Amal Clooney accuses Turkey of hypocrisy on freedom of speech in Armenian genocide trial.
Amal Clooney, the human rights barrister, has accused Turkey of double standards on freedom of expression for defending a Turkish Leftist who described the Armenian genocide an "international lie".
Mrs Clooney, who is representing Armenia on behalf of Doughty Street Chambers along with Geoffrey Robertson QC, said Turkey's stance was hypocritical "because of its disgraceful record on freedom of expression”, including prosecutions of Turkish-Armenians who campaign for the1915 massacres to be called a genocide.
She took on the case against Doğu Perinçek, chairman of the Turkish Workers' Party and an MP, who was found guilty of genocide denial and racial discrimination in Switzerland in 2007, but had his conviction overturned by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) after being defended by Turkey's government.

The documentary film by Nicolas Jallot portrays two main characters, whose backgrounds could not be more different: Hasan Cemal, a Turk and grandson of one of the ‘architects’ of the crime against the Armenian people in 1915 and Fetiye Cetin, the Armenian-Turkish granddaughter of one of the victims. What connects the two is the attempt to break the silence and enable an honest discussion about the bloody history – in a country where the use of the word genocide is still a criminal offence.

Armenia lost Armenian Genocide case to Perinchek & Turkey in ECHR. Final Judgement Armenian Genocide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUX1kP1hU-U S Armenian Genocide, Turkey ,European Court Of Human Rights ,Armenia ,Ottoman Empire, Armenians, Armenian American, ECHR, case of perinçek v switzerland, Strasbourg, Հայոց ցեղասպանություն, Մեծ Եղեռն, Medz Yeghern
The European Court of Human Rights has said a Turkish politician who denied so called "armenian genocide" allegations had his right to freedom of expression breached. The case, referred last year to the ECHR, concerns Dogu Perincek, chairman of the Turkish Patriotic Party.
Perincek had been found guilty of racial discrimination in Switzerland for describing the armenian propaganda around events in 1915 in Ottoman empire as an "international lie"
On Thursday, the ECHR decided by a majority that there had been a violation of Article 10 (freedom of expression) of the European Convention on Human Rights.
"The Court concluded that it had not been necessary, in a democratic society, to subject Mr. Perincek to a criminal penalty in order to protect the rights of the Armenian community at stake in the case," read the ruling. In the events that led to the present case, Perincek, at various conferences in Switzerland in 2005, rejected allegations that the events of 1915 and the following years in the Ottoman Empire amounted to so called genocide of the Armenian people.
The Switzerland-Armenia Association filed a criminal complaint against him. Perincek was tried by the Lausanne Police Court in March 2007, found guilty of racial discrimination, and fined. A Swiss Appeals Court subsequently confirmed Perincek's sentence. Perincek then appealed to the Federal Tribunal, the highest court in Switzerland, which also confirmed the sentence. In 2008, Perincek appealed to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, claiming that the Swiss courts had violated his rights, including that to freedom of expression.
Many Armenians argue that denying allegations that the events of 1915 constituted so called armenian genocide should be a crime, just as negating the Holocaust is. In 2003, the National Council of Switzerland, the country's parliament, recognized the events of 1915 as "genocide."
The 1915 events occurred during World War I when a part of the Armenian population living in the Ottoman Empire sided with the invading Russians and revolted. The relocation of Armenians by the Ottomans in eastern Anatolia following the revolts resulted in numerous casualties.
Turkey does not dispute that there were casualties on both sides, but rejects calling the events genocide. Instead, it calls for a joint commission of historians to be established and archives to be opened in order to study and uncover what happened between the Ottoman Empire and its Armenian citizens which Armenians constantly refuse.

Armenians are an ethnic group native to the Armenian Highland.
The Republic of Armenia and the unrecognized de facto independent Nagorno-Karabakh Republic are the two countries where Armenians form a majority, both with a nearly homogeneous population. Because of a wide-ranging and long-lasting diaspora, an estimated total of 5-7 million people of full or partial Armenian ancestry live outside of Armenia. As a result of the Armenian Genocide, a large number of survivors fled to many countries throughout the world. The largest Armenian populations today exist in Russia, the United States, France, Georgia, Iran, Lebanon, and Syria.
Christianity began to spread in Armenia soon after Jesus's death, due to the efforts of two of his apostles, St. Thaddeus and St. Bartholomew. In the early 4th century, the Kingdom of Armenia became the first nation to adopt Christianity as a state religion
Total population: 8 millions

"The Ethnic Origins of Beauty" (Les origines de la beauté) is a non-profit, artistic, documentary and research project about the ethnic diversity of mankind, presented through the beauty of women of all ethnic groups of the world.
The objectif of this project is to show the real scale of ethnocultural diversity in a full, systematic and creative way; to illustrate each and every distinctive ethnicity, however small it is, and whatever its official status.
It is the ethnicities put on the base of the project, rather than countries, to show the picture of human diversity vividly, which we do not see when focusing only at racial or national typologies that are characteristic for the most international competitions or other events. Limiting only by civil affiliation, 90% of existing peoples stay invisible, because they are not presented as independent countries.
The project “The Ethnic Origins of Beauty” received the acknowledgment of UNESCO and was first officially presented at an exhibition devoted to international women’s day in March 2014, at its Parisian headquarters.
Apart of Internet publishing, broadcasting on TV, exhibitions, publications of books, DVDs and other are planned all along and at the end of the project
The project started in 2012, but it is only in the early stages of its realisation and in constant need of help. We would appreciate any kind of support, cooperation or partnership.

The Armenian genocide at the hands of the Ottoman Empire during WWI took the lives of more than a million people. Despite the testimonies of countless eye witnesses and survivors as well as photographic and documentary evidence, the Turkish government still declines to acknowledge that it ever took place. The world’s ambiguity to horrific crimes inspired Hitler to launch the Holocaust in WWII. Every year on 24 April, Armenians around the world remember those who died during the genocide. They do it to for justice and for humanity, to ensure that nothing like it can ever happen again.

Tragedi Armenia

The Armenian genocide at the hands of the Ottoman Empire during WWI took the lives of more than a million people. Despite the testimonies of countless eye witnesses and survivors as well as photographic and documentary evidence, the Turkish government still declines to acknowledge that it ever took place. The world’s ambiguity to horrific crimes inspired Hitler to launch the Holocaust in WWII. Every year on 24 April, Armenians around the world remember those who died during the genocide. They do it to for justice and for humanity, to ensure that nothing like it can ever happen again.

In recognizing the Genocide of the Arameans (Syriacs), the Armenian Parliament refers to “Asori.” In Armenian, “Asori” and “Asoreren” are well-acknowledged terms to mean “Syrian” people and “Syriac” language, which are originally Greek terms for the Semitic (Hebrew and Aramaic) names of the “Aramean” people and “Aramaic” language. Historians, linguists and scholars of Armenian Studies widely confirm the historical and linguistic fact that “Asori” should be translated as “Syrian; Aramean.” They have also clearly clarified the confusing and inaccurate translation of the resembling English term “Assyrian,” which itself is actually “Asorestants’i” in Armenian.

Armenian Americans (Armenian: ամերիկահայեր) are citizens or residents of the United States who have total or partial Armenian ancestry. They form the second largest community in the Armenian diaspora after Armenians in Russia. The first major wave of Armenian immigration to the US took place in late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Between the 1960s and 1980s Armenians from the Middle Eastern nations of Turkey, Iran and Lebanon migrated to America as a result of political instability in those countries. At around the same time immigration from Soviet Armenia began. It accelerated in the late 1980s and has continued after Armenia's independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 due to socio-economic reasons.
The 2011 American Community Survey estimated that 483,366 Americans held full or partial Armenian ancestry. Various organizations and media criticize these numbers as an underestimate, proposing 800,000 to 1,500,000 Armenian Americans instead. The highest concentration of Americans of Armenian descent is in the Greater Los Angeles area, where 166,498 people have identified themselves as Armenian to the 2000 Census, comprising over 40% of the 385,488 people who identified Armenian origins in the US at the time. Glendale, California is widely thought to be the center of Armenian American life.

The word "genocide" is no longer taboo, but the word still remains forbidden ...
A documentary about the atrocities committed against the Armenian people during World War II.
1915: After a series of defeats, the Ottoman Empire entered the First World War. The state, which had already lost 80% of its European territory, collapsed.
The nationalist ideology won the Ottoman elite, revealing internal tensions throughout the empire.
The Armenian people, who settled in eastern Anatolia for 3000 years, has quickly become the enemy. Between April 1915 and July 1916, more than a million Armenians were deported and massacred. This was the first genocide in a century which, unfortunately, attend more events of this kind.
In Turkey, the discussion on this subject has always avoided and hidden and using the word "genocide" prohibited. However, it is precisely Turkey that arise voices that claim to speak on this subject.
This documentary gives voice to two people who could not be more discordant: Hasan Cemal, a Turkish and grandson of one of the perpetrators, and Fetiye Cetin, one Turkish-Armenian and granddaughter of one of the victims. Together, they will lift the veil of this bloody page of history and speak of the urgent need of the truth.

The Arameans, or Aramaeans, (Aramaic: ܐܪ̈ܡܝܐ, ארמיא ; ʼaramáyé) were a Northwest Semitic semi-nomadic and pastoralist people who originated in what is now modern Syria (Biblical Aram) during the Late Bronze Age and the Iron Age. Large groups migrated to Mesopotamia where they intermingled with the native Akkadian (Assyrian and Babylonian) population. A large proportion of Syriac Christians in modern Syria still espouse an Aramean identity to this day, though few now speak the Western Aramaic language.
The Arameans never had a unified nation; they were divided into small independent kingdoms across parts of the Near East, particularly in what is now modern Syria. After the Bronze Age collapse, their political influence was confined to a number of Syro-Hittite states, which were entirely absorbed into the Neo-Assyrian Empire by the 8th century BC.
By contrast, the Aramaic language came to be the lingua franca of the entire Fertile Crescent, by Late Antiquity developing into the literary languages such as Syriac and Mandaic. Scholars have used the term "Aramaization" for the process by which the Akkadian/Assyro-Babylonian peoples became Aramaic-speaking during the later Iron Age.

The Assyrian Genocide (also known as Sayfo or Seyfo, Syriac: ܩܛܠܐ ܕܥܡܐ ܣܘܪܝܝܐ or ܣܝܦܐ) refers to the mass slaughter of the Assyrian population of the Ottoman Empire during the 1890s and the First World War, in conjunction with the Armenian genocide and Greek genocide. The Assyrian civilian population of upper Mesopotamia (the Tur Abdin region, the Hakkâri, Van, and Siirt provinces of present-day southeastern Turkey, and the Urmia region of northwestern Iran) was forcibly relocated and massacred by the Muslim Ottoman (Turkish) army, together with other armed and allied Muslim peoples, including Kurds, Chechens and Circassians, between 1914 and 1920, with further attacks on unarmed fleeing civilians conducted by local Arab militias. Estimates on the overall death toll have varied. Providing detailed statistics of the various estimates of the Churches' population after the genocide, David Gaunt accepts the figure of 275,000 deaths as reported at the Treaty of Lausanne and ventures that the death toll would be around 300,000 because of uncounted Assyrian-inhabited areas, leading to the elimination of half of the Assyrian nation.
The Assyrian genocide took place in the same context as the Armenian and Pontic Greek genocides. In these events, close to three million Christians of Syriac, Armenian or Greek Orthodox denomination were murdered by the Young Turks regime.
Since the "Assyrian genocide" took place within the context of the much more widespread Armenian genocide, scholarship treating it as a separate event is scarce, with the exceptions of the works of David Gaunt and Hannibal Travis. In 2007, the International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS) reached a consensus that "the Ottoman campaign against Christian minorities of the Empire between 1914 and 1923 constituted a genocide against Armenians, Assyrians, and Pontian and Anatolian Greeks. The IAGS referred to the work of Gaunt and Travis in passing this resolution. Gregory Stanton, the President of the IAGS in 2007--2008 and the founder of Genocide Watch, endorsed the "repudiation by the world's leading genocide scholars of the Turkish government's ninety-year denial of the Ottoman Empire's genocides against its Christian populations, including Assyrians, Greeks, and Armenians.

AGHET -- A Genocide [produced by NDR (German public television)] is a new award-winning documentary made by German filmmaker Eric Friedler which compellingly proves the truth of the genocide of the Armenian people. Using the actual words of 23 German, American and other nationals who witnessed the events, and armed with archival materials, AGHET expertly takes on the challenge that PM Erdogan hurled at the world by stating: »Prove it.«
AGHET incorporates never-before-seen footage and documents -- making it one of the best researched and presented documentaries on the Armenian Genocide. More than just a historic retelling of the Genocide, the film also delves into the ongoing campaign of denial that the Turkish government has mounted since these events occurred in World War I.
AGHET was debuted on NDR in April, 2010. Friedler has assembled an impeccable cast, who bring to life the original texts of German and U.S. diplomatic dispatches and eyewitness accounts, interspersed with never-before-seen footage of the Genocide and its political aftermath. The film, applauded by Nobel Prize laureate Gunter Grass, has sparked renewed debate throughout Europe. It is now being showcased around the world on television, in major film festivals and has been seen by members of the U.S. Congress.
AGHET represents a significant contribution to political and cultural awareness not only for Armenians worldwide, but also more importantly for the non-Armenian world community.

Marina Merrel and Dr Sarah Larsen: What is the Armenian Genocide?
Countries like France, Argentina, Greece, and Russia, recognize what happened in the Ottman Empire during between the years 1915 and 1918 as the Armenian Genocide. Genocide by definition is the organized killing of a people for the express purpose of putting an end to their collective existence.
Today, it is important to understand that the Turkish government carried out an event against the entire Armenian population of the Ottoman Empire. The Armenian people were subjected to deportation, expropriation, abduction, torture, massacre, and starvation. The great bulk of the population was forcibly removed from Armenia and Anatolia to Syria.
Large numbers especially women and children were abducted and horribly abused. The entire wealth of the Armenian people was expropriated. After the end of W.W.I, the atrocities were renewed between 1920 and 1923, and the remaining Armenians were subjected to further massacres and expulsions.
In 1915, thirty-three years before UN Genocide Convention was adopted, the Armenian Genocide was condemned by the international community as a crime against humanity.
Who was responsible for the Armenian Genocide?
The decision made by the political party in power in the Ottoman Empire. This was the Committee of Union and Progress (CUP) (or Ittihad ve Terakki Jemiyeti), popularly known as the Young Turks. Three figures, Mehmet Talaat, Minister of the Interior in 1915 and Grand Vizier (Prime Minister) in 1917; Ismail Enver, Minister of War; Ahmed Jemal, Minister of the Marine and Military Governor of Syria. The Young Turk conspirators, other leading figures of the wartime Ottoman government, members of the Committee of Union and Progress (CUP) Central Committee, and many provincial administrators responsible for atrocities against the Armenians were indicted for their crimes at the end of the war. They were tried in absentia and found guilty of capital crimes. The massacres, expulsions, and further mistreatment of the Armenians between 1920 and 1923 were carried by the Turkish Nationalists, who represented a new political movement opposed to the Young Turks, but who shared a common ideology of ethnic exclusivity.
How many people died in the Armenian Genocide?
Estimated that one and a half million Armenians perished between 1915 and 1923.
Were there witnesses to the Armenian Genocide?
Many witnesses to the Armenian Genocide. Among them were U.S. diplomatic representatives and American missionaries. Some of their reports made headline news in the American and Western media. Many Turkish officials were witnesses as participants in the Armenian Genocide. A number of them gave testimony under oath during the post-war tribunals.
What was the response of the international community to the Armenian Genocide?
The international community condemned the Armenian Genocide. In May 1915, Great Britain, France, and Russia advised the Young Turk leaders that they would be held personally responsible for this crime against humanity. There was a strong public outcry in the United States. At the end of the war, the Allied victors demanded that the Ottoman government prosecute the Young Turks accused of wartime crimes. Relief efforts were also mounted to save "the starving Armenians." The American, British, and German governments sponsored the preparation of reports on the atrocities and numerous accounts were published
Why is the Armenian Genocide commemorated on April 24?
That night the Turkish government placed under arrest over 200 Armenian community leaders in Constantinople. Hundreds more were apprehended soon after. True intentions revealed and implemented. As the persons seized everyone was alerted about the dimensions of the policies being entertained and implemented by the Turkish government. Their death presaged the murder of an ancient civilization. April 24 is, therefore, commemorated as the date of the unfolding of the Armenian Genocide.
Are the Armenian massacres acknowledged today as a Genocide according to the United Nations Genocide Convention?
The United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide describes genocide as "acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group." Clearly this definition applies in the case of the atrocities committed against the Armenians. Because the U.N. Convention was adopted in 1948, thirty years after the Armenian Genocide, Armenians worldwide have sought from their respective governments formal acknowledgment of the crimes committed during W.W.I. Countries like France, Argentina, Greece, and Russia, where the survivors of the Armenian Genocide and their descendants live, have officially recognized the Armenian Genocide. However, as a matter of policy, the present-day Republic of Turkey adamantly denies that a genocide was committed against the Armenians during W.W.I.

A historic ecumenical gathering was held at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels on Tuesday, April 14, 2015. The service was hosted by the Most Reverend José H. Gomez, the Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
The evening's keynote message was delivered by LA Mayor Eric Garcetti, who courageously reaffirmed the importance of recognizing the Armenian Genocide. "Today, in solidarity with the people of Armenia and the Armenian Diaspora, we speak of a Genocide" said Mayor Garcetti. "We heard what Pope Francis said and the courage that he had. But it shouldn't take courage to speak the truth," he continued.
"In Los Angeles we can speak the truth that a genocide occurred...that 1.5 million souls were erased from this earth...that we have a responsibility to make sure that everybody on this earth recognizes it. As Mayor of the Great City of Los Angeles, I will always stand with the Armenian people and I will always stand for truth. It is a genocide and in Los Angeles, we accept that and we move forward with the responsibility to make sure that every lie is answered with the truth."
In his speech, Mayor Garcetti reflected on the impact of the Armenian Genocide on the international level. "A hundred years ago, while slaughter happened in Anatolia, where we lost soul after soul, after soul, it did not go unnoticed. The New York Times ran 145 stories on the race extermination of the Armenians. The coverage was so prolific that it led Herbert Hoover to state probably Armenia was known to the American school child only a little less than England."
More than 150 religious leaders joined civic officials and over three thousand faithful in honoring the memory of the 1.5 million Armenian martyrs who perished during the Armenian Genocide of 1915.

The Armenian Genocide (Armenian: Հայոց Ցեղասպանություն, [hɑˈjɔtsʰ tsʰɛʁɑspɑnuˈtʰjun]), also known as the Armenian Holocaust, the Armenian Massacres and, traditionally among Armenians, as the Great Crime (Armenian: Մեծ Եղեռն, [mɛts jɛˈʁɛrn]; English transliteration: Medz Yeghern [Medz/Great + Yeghern/Crime]) was the Ottoman government's systematic extermination of its minority Armenian subjects from their historic homeland in the territory constituting the present-day Republic of Turkey. It took place during and after World War I and was implemented in two phases: the wholesale killing of the able-bodied male population through massacre and forced labor, and the deportation of women, children, the elderly and infirm on death marches to the Syrian Desert. The total number of people killed as a result has been estimated at between 1 and 1.5 million. The Assyrians, the Greeks and other minority groups were similarly targeted for extermination by the Ottoman government, and their treatment is considered by many historians to be part of the same genocidal policy.
It is acknowledged to have been one of the first modern genocides, as scholars point to the organized manner in which the killings were carried out to eliminate the Armenians, and it is the second most-studied case of genocide after the Holocaust. The word genocide was coined in order to describe these events.
The starting date of the genocide is conventionally held to be April 24, 1915, the day when Ottoman authorities arrested some 250 Armenian intellectuals and community leaders in Constantinople. Thereafter, the Ottoman military uprooted Armenians from their homes and forced them to march for hundreds of miles, depriving them of food and water, to the desert of what is now Syria. Massacres were indiscriminate of age or gender, with rape and other sexual abuse commonplace. The majority of Armenian diaspora communities were founded as a result of the Armenian genocide.
Turkey, the successor state of the Ottoman Empire, denies the word genocide is an accurate description of the events. In recent years, it has faced repeated calls to accept the events as genocide. To date, twenty countries have officially recognized the events of the period as genocide, and most genocide scholars and historians accept this view.
