Lawrence in Syria (1911 - 1914)
If this seems a peculiar setting for the place where a young Lawrence first came to his appreciation of the Arab world, the answer actually lies about a mile east of the village. There, on a promontory above a ford of the Euphrates sits the ruins of the ancient city of Carchemish. While human habitation on that hilltop dates back at least 5,000 years, it was a desire to unlock the secrets of the H

STORYLINE:
The Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad slammed Arab leaders on Sunday for putting pressure on Syria, mocking them for their talk of democracy.
Ahmadinejad was speaking at the start of an international conference in Tehran on youth and Islamic awakening.
In his speech the Iranian president scoffed at Arab leaders and claimed that after the US and other world powers finished off Syria, they would come after them.
"Today they are planning to strike Syria and if it is done, then it is your turn," Ahmadinejad said.
Ammar al-Hakim, a powerful cleric and leader of the Supreme Islamic Iraqi Council, Ibrahim Jafari, the former Iraqi Prime Minister, and Palestinian Islamic Jihad Secretary General Ramadan Abdullah were among those attending.
Ahmadinejad said: "Democracy will not come out through the guns of America and American allied countries. They will not bring and impose anything but poverty and humiliation for nations. Do they enjoy democracy themselves so that they can present it to others as gift?"
The Arab League halted its observer mission in Syria on Saturday because of escalating violence that killed nearly 100 people the past three days.
The rising bloodshed has added urgency to new attempts by Arab and Western countries to find a resolution to the 10 months of violence that according to the United Nations has killed at least 5,400 people as President Bashar Assad seeks to crush persistent protests demanding an end to his rule.
The United Nations is holding talks on a new resolution on Syria and next week will discuss an Arab peace plan aimed at ending the crisis.
However the initiatives face two major obstacles: Damascus' rejection of an Arab peace plan which it says impinges on its sovereignty, and Russia's willingness to use its U-N Security Council veto to protect Syria from sanctions.

Voice of America - News Arts & Entertainment / Carolyn Weaver New York - A few days after Syrian-American pianist and composer Malek Jandali (http://www.MalekJandali.com) performed his song, "Watani Ana" ("I Am My Homeland"), outside the White House, Assad security forces burst into his parents’ home in Homs and beat them brutally. (http://goo.gl/G1j6ph)
“That was the first time ever realizing the ‘soft’ power of music,” Jandali said in New York, the week of his debut at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall. He moved his parents to the U.S. soon after the incident in July 2011, but four years into the Syrian conflict, Jandali remains focused on using his music to raise awareness and, he hopes, help bring down the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
“It is their music,” he said, referring to those resisting Assad. “I’m inspired by their courageous acts, by their memories, by their history. You have an 8,000-year-[old] culture here. And I am honored to have this opportunity to be their voice.”
Jandali describes his music, which has been performed by the Royal Philharmonic and other major orchestras, as “American neo-classical,” incorporating Middle Eastern melodies, rhythms and modes into new symphonies, sonatas, chamber works and other forms.
At Carnegie Hall, Jandali premiered new chamber works for piano, cello and oud, with cellist Laura Metcalf and oud player Abdulrahim Alsiadi.
He said that Syria's ancient culture inspired the works. “Each one is a story, a story of beautiful counterpoint, between the call of prayer from a minaret and the church bells in Damascus — or a child’s cry in Homs,” he said.
Classically trained at the Arab Institute of Music in Damascus, Jandali became interested in ancient Syrian music when he learned of Ugarit, an ancient city near where he had grown up in Homs.
“This is the city that invented the oldest form of musical notation. It dates back to 1400 B.C.,” Jandali said, holding a replica of a carved stone tablet about the size of an iPhone. “It has both words and music, and instructions on tuning the lyre. It is a song about a woman who couldn’t have a child, asking the moon god at the time to help her bear a child so her civilization could continue.”
The song became the basis for his first album, "Echoes from Ugarit." (http://goo.gl/sXc1Yl) available on iTunes (http://goo.gl/m7bwCj)
Oud player Alsiadi said that Jandali was inventing a new musical language, and rescuing an old one: “He is saving the Syrian collective memory. With Malek, I would say this is the first time we see a composer taking the oud to the maximum limits. It’s very complex, and actually, we have now a different pronunciation on this instrument that we never had before.”
Jandali also released the CDs of his new Syrian Symphony at the concert, another gift to his people, he said, including the Syrian children growing up in refugee camps. (http://goo.gl/WZ5Gfd)
“You know, the question is why a Syrian symphony at this time, where people are in need of medicine, food, shelter,” he said. “And I’m envisioning someone a hundred years from today, looking back, saying, 'What did the Syrian people do during their revolution? Ah, here’s a Syrian symphony!' Similar to what Shostakovich did, for example, in his Leningrad Symphony. So what I’m trying to do is preserve and present my culture that is being destroyed today.”

If this seems a peculiar setting for the place where a young Lawrence first came to his appreciation of the Arab world, the answer actually lies about a mile east of the village. There, on a promontory above a ford of the Euphrates sits the ruins of the ancient city of Carchemish. While human habitation on that hilltop dates back at least 5,000 years, it was a desire to unlock the secrets of the Hittites, a civilization that reached its apogee in the 11th century B.C., that first brought a 22-year-old Lawrence here in 1911.
Even before Carchemish, there were signs that the world might well hear of T.E. Lawrence in some capacity. Born in 1888, the second of five boys in an upper-middle-class British family, his almost-paralyzing shyness masked a brilliant mind and a ferocious independent streak.
Learning Arabic, he took to quizzing members of the local work crew on their family histories, on the region’s complex clan and tribal affiliations, and often visited the laborers in their homes to glimpse their lives up close. To the degree that these workmen had dealt with Westerners before, it had been in the master-servant form; to meet someone who took a genuine interest in their culture, joined to Lawrence’s very un-Western tolerance for hardship and hard work, drew them to the young Briton as a kindred spirit. “The foreigners come out here always to teach,” he wrote his parents from Carchemish, “whereas they had much better learn.”
The dig in northern Syria, originally funded for one year, stretched into four. He wrote a friend in 1913, extolling his comfortable life in Carchemish, that he intended to remain as long as the funding lasted and then go on to “another and another nice thing.” That plan abruptly ended with the onset of World War I in August 1914, and Lawrence, back in England on leave, was destined never to see Carchemish again.

Thomas Hoepker is a renowned Magnum Photos photographer who began his career in 1960. He visited the Korean volcanic island of Jejudo along with Korean underwater photographer Y.Zin. They explore Jejudo′s geo-trails, which combine the island′s unique geological resources and the history and culture of local villages. On the Gimnyeong-Woljeong Geo-trail the two photographers visit lava tubes and local villages. On the Suwolbong Peak Geo-Trail, which was formed 18,000 years ago, they witness the fascinating traces of ancient volcanic activities. On the Seongsan-Ojo Geo-Trail, the two photographers meet Jejudo′s women-divers and also discover the awe-inspiring beauty of the Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak. Jejudo Island is recognized by UNESCO for its breathtaking scenery and unique volcanic geological features. Through this trip, Thomas Hoepker witness the mystery of Mother Nature and the wisdom of Jeju residents.

Russia is sending more troops and now tanks into Syria as part of a continued military buildup in the war-torn country.
U.S. officials say several transport planes have taken off from a base in southern Russia during the past week to ferry equipment to Syria.
Russian T-90 tanks and artillery have also been spotted at an airfield near the city of Latakia , a stronghold of Russia′s old ally,... President Bashar al Assad.
Syria denies Russian troops are invovled in combat, but has admitted to having Russian ″experts″ on the ground.
U.S. officials worry that a Russian presence in Syria could seriously complicate the U.S.-led coalition′s air strikes against Islamic State fighters in the country.

Pious Gifts, Lamp Story - Learn the history of giving mosque lamps in Islamic traditions, and inspect an earthenware bowl for a lesson in hospitality.
Belief in divine reward, combined with traditional ideas of benevolence and kindness, as well as personally and politically motivated obligation and compensation, helped shape an Islamic model of giving Pious Gifts to a mosque, shrine, or other religious institution.

The dedication of lighting fixtures to religious institutions, which was an especially widespread practice throughout the Islamic world, has its basis in one of the most revelatory sections of the Qur'an, the Surat al-Nur, or Chapter of Light. The act itself of providing light, as in the donation of a lamp, is significant: "He who shines up a light in a mosque for seven nights running, God will keep him away from the seven doors of Hell and illuminate his tomb." This enameled glassware from the Mamluk period in Egypt likely hung in a religious institution in Cairo until becoming a state-level gift to Leopold II, King of Belgium, to commemorate the inauguration of the Suez Canal in 1869.
"As is well-known to us in Qatar, the concept of generosity is ingrained in our faith, culture, and society. But what comes as a surprise is that it also led to the creation and dissemination of so many great works of art, as this outstanding exhibition demonstrates."

Gifts of the Sultan: The Arts of Giving at the Islamic Courts focuses on a practice shared by all cultures—gift exchange—and the delight in receiving gifts and satisfaction in performing acts of generosity. Bringing together over 200 objects associated with the great Islamic courts from Spain to India, this exhibition is the first systematic investigation of the impact of gift giving, for diplomatic to personal to pious purposes, on the development of Islamic art.
Made of rare and precious materials and commissioned from the best artists and craftsmen of the day, these gifts have "Life Stories" just under their surfaces, including narratives of intricate making, thoughtful sharing, and extensive traveling.

About 100 Syrian children have recently painted a lot of pictures of their beloved country as a way to express their desire for peaceful life and hatred towards IS militants who have torn apart their homeland.
Organizers of the public welfare event in the Syrian National Museum in Damascus say they aimed at showing their concerns for the ancient city of Palmyra, which was captured by IS this May.
"The activity is to deepen the next generation's impression of the cultural relics. Unfortunately, Syria is now in turmoil. But we are launching another war in the field of culture apart from the military field," said Muhsen Alarfi, a member of the public welfare organization.
Joud Abdel Kareem, a 10-year-old pupil, drew a picture of the sites of Palmyra as he felt very sad as so many ancient sites have fallen into the hands of the IS militans.
The Syrian National Museum has been told that IS has buried a large amount of explosives in Palmyra and destroyed some tombs and sculptures with explosives.
Palmyra, a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization World Heritage site, contains monumental ruins of a city that was one of the most important cultural centers in ancient times.

For nearly twenty years, anthropologist and photographer Lars Krutak has been on a mission to document the vanishing world of Indigenous tattooing culture. His research explores these ancient human traditions, revealing how this language of the skin exposed individual desires and fears as well as cultural values and ancestral ties that were written the body.
Lars Krutak is a tattoo anthropologist, author and television host who has spent the last two decades traveling the world, learning about unique tattoos and the meanings behind them. Lars has a special interest in preserving Indigenous knowledge of tattooing, as this ancient culture has begun to vanish quickly around the globe. Having published several books on the subject, and hosting a Discovery Channel series, entitled “Tattoo Hunter”, Lars has worked to reveal the cultural diversity of tattoos, the biographies they represent and what they say about being human. Lars’ latest project is a recently published book highlighting the Indigenous tattoo history of the North American continent.

Syria is an ancient country of culture located between the Mediterranean and the desert. Its ancient desert metropolises, old villages, impenetrable fortresses and biblical harbour towns have witnessed the rich and fascinating history of bygone times.Damascus is the capital of Syria and symbol of culture in the Near East and located a hundred kilometres from the Mediterranean coast. The Kalaa Citadel is situated on the periphery of the old town that was once surrounded by huge walls and it was from there that Saladin fended off the attacks of the Crusaders. The Khan As´Ad Pasha is often referred to as being the most beautiful caravansary in the Near East. Its inner courtyard is covered by eight mighty and partly painted cupolas each of which is supported by four pillars. Set amid the desert savannah of Syria are the proud remains of a unique and mysterious metropolis, Palmyra, a legendary ancient city that was built due to the existence of the Tadmur Oasis. The shortest and fastest route from the Mediterranean to Mesopotamia and Persia travels directly past the Tadmur Oasis thus it was only a question of time until an important trading post was founded there. Around a quarter of a million Bedouins live in Syria’s desert areas. They are nomads who speak Arabic and belong to the Muslim faith and their income is derived from sheep, goats and camels which produce both milk and meat. They travel the desert accompanied by their animals. Further north on the edge of the fertile Al Ghab Ditch is the ancient metropolis of Apameia, one of the most beautiful cities in the Near East. Apart from Bosra and Palmyra this huge city of ruins is one of the most important Hellenist regions in Syria. Syria is the Pearl Of The East. With deserts, wadis and mountains, castles and crusader fortresses, Roman ruins, palaces and mosques. A legendary country between both past and future whose cultural treasures still survive today.

Take a tour of Ancient City of Bosra in Bosra, Syrian Arab Republic -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
The half-standing ruins of this dark-stoned city rise out of the southern Syrian landscape.
Nearly deserted today, Bosra has a great deal of history from thousands of years of habitation by different cultures.
The city is at least old enough to have appeared in historical documents from the fourteenth century BC.
Early in the first millennium AD, Bosra became a part of the Roman Empire, which is the strongest influence seen at work in the ruins.
Since then, it has been the territory of the Byzantine Empire and the Arabs who swept in during the seventh century.
Among the ruined city's Roman and Christian structures, the fortified amphitheater is probably the greatest.
This deep, stadium-like building is mostly intact and gives a taste of what Bosra may once have been like.

Damascus is the capital of Syria and is a symbol of culture in the Near East. A hundred kilometres from the Mediterranean coast, the strategically located city was once the capital of the Umayyad.Cannons, the busts of various presidents and military vehicles are displayed in the large courtyard of the Takiyeh Mosque, an ancient Dervish monastery complex. Built in 1554 and designed by Ottoman master architect, Sinan, it also includes an adjoining inn for the numerous pilgrims who travelled to Mecca. Damascus has always been much prized: by the pharaohs and the Babylonian monarch, Nebukadnezar, and later, Alexander The Great. Then came Persian, Roman and Islamic emperors followed by the Crusaders and Mongols. The Kalaa Citadel is situated on the periphery of the old town that was once surrounded by huge walls. It was from here that Saladin fended off the attacks of the Crusaders. The Romans built a fort here that was constantly extended with impressive walls and towers and located directly outside the city wall, the River Barada was also of strategic importance. Although the Mongols destroyed the inner buildings, the fortress walls survived. The Suq is an important part of every Islamic city, a market that originated in ancient times. Thousands of shops in numerous interconnected lanes form the commercial heart of Damascus. In the Gold Suq everything glitters, bracelets, rings and even a large variety of kitchen utensils. Damascus has for thousands of years been a place desired by the powerful. Yet it has managed to survive and is still the most beautiful capital city in the Near East.

Damascus is the capital of Syria and is a symbol of culture in the Near East. Syria, officially the Syrian Arab Republic, is a country in Western Asia, bordering Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea to the west, Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, and Israel to the southwest. Its capital Damascus is among the oldest continuously-inhabited cities in the world. A country of fertile plains, high mountains, and deserts, it is home to diverse ethnic and religious groups, including the Arab, Greeks, Armenians, Assyrians, Kurds, Circassians, Mhallami, Mandeans and Turks. Religious groups include Sunni, Christians, Alawite, Druze religion, Mandeanism and Yezidi. Sunni Arabs make up the largest population group in Syria.
In English, the name "Syria" was formerly synonymous with the Levant (known in Arabic as al-Sham) while the modern state encompasses the sites of several ancient kingdoms and empires, including the Eblan civilization of the 3rd millennium BC. In the Islamic era, Damascus was the seat of the Umayyad Caliphate and a provincial capital of the Mamluk Sultanate in Egypt.
The modern Syrian state was established after World War I as a French mandate, and represented the largest Arab state to emerge from the formerly Ottoman-ruled Arab Levant. It gained independence in April 1946, as a parliamentary republic. The post-independence period was tumultuous, and a large number of military coups and coup attempts shook the country in the period 1949–1971. Between 1958-61, Syria entered a brief union with Egypt, which was terminated by a military coup. The Arab Republic of Syria came into being in 1963, transforming from the Republic of Syria in the Ba'athist coup d'état. Syria was under Emergency Law from 1963 to 2011, effectively suspending most constitutional protections for citizens, and its system of government is considered to be non-democratic. Bashar al-Assad has been president since 2000 and was preceded by his father Hafez al-Assad, who was in office from 1970 to 2000.

Travel video about destination Palmyra in Syria.
The ancient city of Palmyra is located in the Tadmur Oasis in the very heart of the Syrian savannah. Surrounded by arid desert it was once a proud and pulsating trading metropolisand everywhere can be seen relics of a bygone age that was full of myth and mystique. The influence of the legendary oasis city grew due to it having been regarded as a province of Rome. The Romans soon recognized the strategic importance of Palmyra as it was a vital centre of trade in the Near East. Palmyra’s fine buildings such as its Amphitheatre were typical of its impressive architecture. Most of the Tetrapylon has been restored. It towers high above the ancient ruins and the Great Colonnade was once the main street of the historic metropolis. Beyond the city walls in the Valley Of Tombs the mystic atmosphere of the former caravan city becomes apparent. Several well preserved mausoleums give the surreal looking desert landscape a truly ghostly atmosphere. The architecture of these multi-floored burial places are unique in the world. The view from the Arabian fortress extends across the picturesque ruins of the city to the endless horizons of the desert. The oasis and ancient remains of Palmyra look almost surreal as if in a dream yet the old ruins and the mighty fortress really do exist in very tangible and resplendent form.

A young couple from Mississippi faces federal charges after the pair was arrested over the weekend for conspiring and attempting to provide material support and resources to the Islamic State (ISIS) group.
The arrested couple, Jaelyn Delshaun Young, 20, and Muhammad Oda Dakhlalla, 22, had been in fact revealing their plans of joining ISIS to covert FBI agents online since May, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Young allegedly said her skills in math and chemistry and work experience at an analytical lab as well as her partner’s computer science skills would be useful to ISIS. The couple also expressed that they would love to provide medical aid, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Young said the wedding took place in June and the couple would travel to Istanbul and eventually enter Syria to join ISIS using honeymoon as their cover story, CNN reported.
The couple was arrested at the Golden Triangle Regional Airport Saturday morning, just before boarding a plane to Istanbul. They could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted, Reuters reported.

I walked the alley and found an unusual cafe. It is the story cafe. The storyteller is telling the old story cafe. Gore Syrian people to read because they can not understand even more, but people cheer and rejoice. Is it because the atmosphere ... Tourists are easy to indulge in their own Arabian Nights. Tip Trays, laid down in the story is chidatneun towards the climax. "Already I came in third place, very unique. It's one of the places you should see just once and you come to Syria. You can get a feeling of antiquity as if to return. It likes on very old Medina. I'll be a unique and interesting experience. "Finally, my travel story cafe out the end of the night Damascus also goes deeper.

The innumerable fools have made the learned very scarce.
Use your intellect to understand something when you hear about it-the intellect that examines, that is, and not just the intellect that repeats what it hears, for surely there are many who repeat the knowledge that they hear, and there are few who examine it.

Sufism today has gained widespread interest mainly through its music and poetry, but also through its contrast with orthodox scriptural Islam. Sufism stands for an inclusive Islam focused on personal love of God and spiritual guidance within a wide range of devotional practices. Music and mystical poetry are the sonic embodiment of Sufism and its worldwide placeholder in the search for spiritual goals. Sufi, thus, can designate a broader spectrum of vernacular devotional and ritual identities. The core idea for this workshop allows us to approach this near-global vogue of a Sufi Imaginary through its music.
“Islam and Sufism” also brings into conversation a range of ideascapes and practices, from the traditional South Asian spiritual lineages to a new generation of Muslim popular culture. Sufi music is founded in ritual and its constraints, but its practice is also open to creative agency. Reaching for the gift of the sublime enables embodied engagement on multiple levels—through rhythm, repetition of words, even ecstatic dance, to reach for the gift of the sublime, individually or collectively.

Nigerian comedy has boomed in the last decade, and Bright "Basketmouth" Okpocha is, arguably, the country's most successful stand-up comic.
Born and bred in the notorious Lagos slum Ajegunle, he discovered his gift for comedy by chance and has never looked back.
"Basketmouth means somebody who doesn't hold anything back, which is like a basket. A basket doesn't hold water. And when I decided to go with the name Basketmouth, it actually defined my kind of art, my kind of delivery, because I just say it the way it comes, I do not have any filtering system, and that's how Basketmouth came to life," he says.
His take on Lagos, West Africa's most vibrant city, is upbeat, irreverent and challenging.
"Lagos is real and grimy, and I like grimy places.... Lagos is very hard so you have to be on top of your game. Everyone wants to outsmart the next person. Lagos never sleeps. Lagos is a place where you can get rich in a second and get poor in a second."

The earliest civilizations in history were established in the region now known as the Middle East around 3500 BC by the Sumerians, in Mesopotamia (Iraq), widely regarded as the cradle of civilization. The Sumerians and the Akkadians (later known as Babylonians and Assyrians) all flourished in this region.
"In the course of the fourth millennium BC, city-states developed in southern Mesopotamia that were dominated by temples whose priests represented the cities' patron deities. The most prominent of the city-states was Sumer, which gave its language to the area and became the first great civilization of mankind. About 2340 BC, Sargon the Great (c. 2360--2305 BC) united the city-states in the south and founded the Akkadian dynasty, the world's first empire."
Soon after the Sumerian civilization began, the Nile valley of ancient Egypt was unified under the Pharaohs in the 4th millennium BC, and civilization quickly spread through the Fertile Crescent to the west coast of the Mediterranean Sea and throughout the Levant. The Elamites, Hittites, Amorites, Phoenicians, Israelites and others later built important states in this region.
Assyrian empires
Mesopotamia was home to several powerful empires that came to rule almost the entire Middle East—particularly the Assyrian Empires of 1365--1076 BC and the Neo-Assyrian Empire of 911--605 BC. The Assyrian Empire, at its peak, was the largest the world had seen. It ruled all of what is now Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, Kuwait, Jordan, Egypt, Cyprus, and Bahrain—with large swathes of Iran, Turkey, Armenia, Georgia, Sudan, and Arabia. "The Assyrian empires, particularly the third, had a profound and lasting impact on the Near East. Before Assyrian hegemony ended, the Assyrians brought the highest civilization to the then known world. From the Caspian to Cyprus, from Anatolia to Egypt, Assyrian imperial expansion would bring into the Assyrian sphere nomadic and barbaric communities, and would bestow the gift of civilization upon them."
Persian empires
From the early 6th century BC onwards, several Persian states dominated the region, beginning with the Medes and non-Persian Neo-Babylonian Empire, then their successor the Achaemenid Empire known as the first Persian Empire, conquered in the late 4th century BC. by the very short-lived Macedonian Empire of Alexander the Great, and then successor kingdoms such as Ptolemaic Egypt and the Seleucid state in Western Asia.
After a century of hiatus, the idea of the Persian Empire was revived by the Central Asian Iranian Parthians in the 3rd century BC—and continued by their successors, the Sassanids from the 3rd century AD. This empire dominated sizable parts of what is now the Asian part of the Middle East, and continue to influence the rest of the Asiatic and African Middle East region, until the Arab Muslim conquest of Persia in the mid-7th century CE. Eastern Rite, Church of the East Christianity took hold in Persian-ruled Mesopotamia, particularly in Assyria from the 1st century AD onwards, and the region became a center of a flourishing Syriac--Assyrian literary tradition.
Roman Empire
In the 1st century BC, the expanding Roman Republic absorbed the whole Eastern Mediterranean, which included much of the Near East. The Roman Empire united the region with most of Europe and North Africa in a single political and economic unit. Even areas not directly annexed were strongly influenced by the Empire, which was the most powerful political and cultural entity for centuries. Though Roman culture spread across the region, the Greek culture and language first established in the region by the Macedonian Empire continued to dominate throughout the Roman period. Cities in the Middle East, especially Alexandria, became major urban centers for the Empire and the region became the Empire's "bread basket" as the key agricultural producer.
As the Christian religion spread throughout the Roman and Persian Empires, it took root in the Middle East, and cities such as Alexandria and Edessa became important centers of Christian scholarship. By the 5th century, Christianity was the dominant religion in the Middle East, with other faiths (gradually including heretical Christian sects) being actively repressed. The Middle East's ties to the city of Rome were gradually severed as the Empire split into East and West, with the Middle East tied to the new Roman capital of Constantinople. The subsequent Fall of the Western Roman Empire therefore, had minimal direct impact on the region.
