The jawbones and a few isolated teeth of the new hominin (that’s us and our extinct ancestors) are described in Nature this week.
On March 4, 2011, a left upper jaw complete with a few teeth (pictured above) was discovered on top of sandstone in the Burtele area of Woranso-Mille in the central Afar region of Ethiopia. Later that day and the day after, two lower jaws were discovered: one was found in the Burtele area in two pieces (the left half is pictured below to the right), the other was found at a locality called Waytaleyta about two kilometers away. Based on the geology, radiometric dating, paleomagnetic data, and the rate of sediment deposition, the layer the fossils had weathered out of was between the ages of 3.3 and 3.5 million years. The area is just 35 kilometers north of Hadar, where Lucy was discovered.

This is the left maxilla of Australopithecus anamensis. This fossil was found in the excavation of site 261-1 at Alia Bay, East Turkana.
Although the Allia Bay fossils are slightly younger, they most closely represent those from Kanapoi and are attributed to Australopithecus anamensis. At Allia Bay, most of the hominids were found at the 261-1 site and this specimen KNMER 30745 came from within the excavation itself. This site lies approximately 5 m below the Moiti Tuff, which is dated elsewhere to 3·940·03 Ma.

Vitals:
Holotype: KT12/H1, Paratype: KT12/H2
Found: January 1995
By: French and Chadian Team of Palaeontologists
Locality: Bahr El Ghazal, Koro Toro, northern Chad
Comprising: A distorted cranium and third premolar
Lived: 3 - 3.5 million years
Species Attribution: Australopithecus bahrelghazali
Alternative Attribution: Australopithecus afarensis
Diet: Predominantly C4 Plants (Sedges, Grasses)
Characteristics that set it apart from Au. afarensis: Thicker enamel than Ardipithecus ramidus and gracile symphysis.

Welcome to Eventlog, the place to find the events, people and fossils that shaped the world of Palaeoanthropology. This is the second Fossil Shout out of the series.
Today’s fossil is codenamed KT12/H1. This partial jaw was lifted from a gravel desert surface, along what was once the shores of Lake Megachad, Koro Toro, Chad, north Africa. It was found at 08:45 am, local time on the 23rd of January 1995 by a French-Chadian team of fossil prospectors, led by Michel Brunet, French Palaeoanthropologist. The fossil was found in the vicinity of layers which were dated to between 3 and 3.5 million years of age. The teeth of KT12/H1 were isotopically analysed producing results that suggested this hominin ate mainly C4 sedges with associated root tubers. Sedges such as Cyperus which still grow around the shores of a much smaller Lake Chad today, may have been on this hominins menu, over 3 million years ago.
So, how does this fossil relate to the other hominins of it’s time. The French team simply concluded that the new species is more derived than Praeanthropus afarensis. Praeanthropus was first proposed in 1955 as a new genus by Musaffer Senyurek, Turkish Palaeoanthropologist to classify the Laetoli Maxilla found by Ludwig Kohl-Larsen, physician, Nazi Party member and amateur palaeontologist in 1939. It was not until 1978, that afarensis was introduced by Donald Johanson, American Palaeoanthropology. The Laetoli maxilla is considered an Australopithecus afarensis and is thus the earliest-found afarensis fossil, many decades before A.L. 288-1.
Though the derived features of KT12/H1 were what spurred a new species name, today, the majority of palaeoanthropologists are quite happy to consider the fossil a member of Australopithecus afarensis, though 2,500 km from Ethiopia, the heartland of that species. The animals that lived in eastern Africa and Koro Toro were of the same variety and so this showed faunal exchanges had taken place between those two areas and by extension lends credence to KT 12/H1 being Au. afarensis.

What Makes us Human? By any measure, humans are an outlier species, albeit a very successful one. We dominate the planet and live in more sophisticated, complex societies than any other creature. All animals are unique, but humans are the most unique of all. Why?
Dr. Donald Johanson, noted anthropologist and discoverer of the famous 3.2 million year old skeleton named Lucy (Australopithecus afarensis), whose discovery lead to the redrawing of our family tree, believes the time has come to define the evolutionary roots of what it means to be human. The powerful paradigm of evolution explains why humans look the way they do. How can we apply this same paradigm to explain why we have become the preeminent species on the planet?
Dr. Johanson believes that humanness has resulted from three attributes unique to us, which have interacted in a powerful manner: our reliance on cumulative culture, our symbolically constructed world, and our unsurpassed capacity for cooperation.
In addition to Lucy's ongoing importance to human origins studies, she led Dr. Johanson to his questions about humanness in today's world, and believing that, more than ever before, it is critical that we reflect on how the three attributes contribute to our place in nature and assess our responsibilities to the planet.

The nonprofit FreeThought Fort Wayne, a chapter of American Humanist Association, will be hosting Dr. Lawrence Kuznar to present on human evolution and the significance of the recent discovery of Homo naledi, followed by a Q&A.; Homo naledi is welcomed as a new member to the human evolutionary tree because it shares traits with both pre-humans like Australopithecus afarensis (“Lucy”) and Homo erectus.
Dr. Kuznar is a well-published anthropology professor at IPFW who specializes in the ecological and economic features of traditional pastoral societies. He has done extensive research among Aymara herders in southern Peru, and is currently working with Navajo sheepherders and cattle ranchers. At Indiana University- Purdue University Fort Wayne, he teaches introductory Biological Anthropology, South American Indians, Economic Anthropology, Ecology and Culture, Andean Peoples, and Gender in Cross-Cultural Perspective.
This will educate viewers the basics of human evolution and how recent findings fit into the human evolutionary family. This will bring greater appreciation to our ancestry, how we are connected, and that we as a species have more in common to celebrate. We seek to foster dialogue and fellowship among thoughtful people in our community who will find common ground with us.
