Created as part of an ongoing partnership between Desert Pea Media and Leader In Development @ The Apollo House in Dubbo, NSW.
This project was written, recorded and filmed in four days by Desert Pea Media artists, and co-written/ directed/ performed by students from Mian School in Dubbo, which runs alternative education programs for disengaged young people. They're the Last Chance Crew.
Attendance rates for Indigenous young people in Central West NSW are alarmingly lower than non-Indigenous students, and this program sought to create dialogue around these issues.
What prevents Indigenous young people engaging at school? Where does it come from? What does it mean for their future? How can it change? Will it change? Whose choice is it? What are YOU gunna do?

This production was written, recorded and filmed over 5 days in July 2015 in the community of Dubbo - in Wiradjuri Country (Central Western NSW) as part of a Desert Pea Media (DPM) collaboration with Mission Australia.
The project came about through Mission Australia staff identifying a need for creating genuine community dialogue and creating awareness around mental health across the region.
With the support of specialist consultants Don Finlayson (psychologist) and Frank 'Riverbank Frank' Doolan (Wiradjuri Elder), DPM was able to frame a difficult but important conversation about how to identify and support loved ones who have mental health issues, and where to turn for help in your community.
This information was then directed into a narrative structure by local young people and Desert Pea Media staff. We then crafted the narrative into this awesome song, which was filmed immediately on location.
The fantastic staff at Mission Australia feature in the chorus including Sam Orth, Ray Fuller and Dylan Hill.

LYRICS
Sister, brother, what’s the go?
We’re talkin’ health, mental. Ya know?
Trust, reflect now take the time
Gotta change your thinkin one step at a time
We got lots at stake, Dubs to the Gate
Drugs and grog all over the state
Guilt and shame, got lots on my plate
Grief and trauma, high suicide rates
Blood pumps in my veins, direct to my brain
Central West over the mountain range
Pain and guilt got it up in the game
Doin life in the prison of shame
Everybody know it but don’t wanna talk
Hard make sense of ya negative thoughts
Hard to make change when ya comin up short
Hard to get help with no support.
I’m here for you
I’m here for you
I won’t pretend to understand what you’re going through
Your point of view belongs to you and that’s the truth
We remember the ones that are left behind
Still livin in the shadow of suicide
PTSD yep, traumatized
Feel fear in everyday life
Sometimes ya need real support, a place to go
Take ya bro speak to a pro
Everybody on earth got feelings yo
Stay safe whey a feeling low
I got ya back my sister my brother
Common unity means looking out for one another
For ya uncle and ya aunty and cousins and ya nanna and ya pop
Got real community hip hop
Shout out to the mob from Mission
Those who gotta deal with a difficult position
Helping with the mental health conditions
Guiding us in this life we’re living

Our recent trip to Dubbo Zoo, lots of native and African animals. Dubbo Zoo is owned by Taronga Zoo and is 6 hour (with short stops at Katoomba and Mudgee) drive from Sydney in NSW, Australia.
Get up reasonably early the Zoo is open form 9am to 4pm, main gate shuts at 5pm. The Zoo is set in 1000's of acres of bush land just on the western side of Dubbo. The animals looked well cared for and had plenty of space to roam around in. I must say it was a bit weird looking at animals that are usually found in Africa in and Aussie landscape.
The Zoo has plenty of things for children including a kids play area surrounded by monkeys and lemurs, bikes with little carts for the kids to ride in (around the zoo). They also had some Zoo styled golf buggies (fit 6 adults), although I can't see why you would get one of these if you have your car. The bike is a healthy alternative as long as its not raining!
For that special occasion you could stay at the Zoo and do a Zoofari Lodge experience and there is also a Billabong with over night tents it make that stay all the more authentic. These have early morning walks and night walks with a sneak look at the behind the scenes of the Zoo, costly but I'm told very much worth it.
There are toilets and a couple of refreshment areas (food is sold) around the driving course and plenty of picnic breakout areas for your own food. The shop and cafe were clean and well appointed with menus at a reasonable price.
Make sure you locate two days for the visit and take your time. One family pass is good for two days and is quite reasonable as long as you take advantage of the second day.
The trip from Sydney is just manageable in a care with young kids. Allow 3 days minimum for a trip otherwise you will completely knacker yourself and your kids.
