VANCOUVER — The cat with alien eyes of Instagram fame started having swollen eyes after turning 1 year old due to a genetic disorder known as spontaneous lens luxation. Matilda the cat had to see an eye specialist, who told her owners that their pet might eventually have to undergo surgery to remove both eyes. When the owners adopted Matilda, the cat had regular eyes, but then her eyes started having noticeable problems. The lenses in both of the cat's eyes detached, making them blind and swollen. Matilda's owners took the cat to several veterinarians and used different treatments before they could identify the disorder. The owners started a GoFundMe page to pay for the cat's medical treatment, and reached the goal of $2,500 in a few days. Ectrodactyly Ectrodactyly involves the deficiency or absence of one or more central digits of the hand or foot and is also known as split hand/split foot malformation. The hands and feet of people with ectrodactyly are often described as "claw-like" and may include only the thumb and one finger (usually either the little finger, ring finger, or a syndactyly of the two) with similar abnormalities of the feet. 4. Epidermodysplasia verruciformis Epidermodysplasia verruciformis is an extremely rare disorder that makes people prone to widespread human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. This infection causes scaly macules and papules to grow on the hands, feet, and even face. These skin “eruptions” appear as wart-like lesions — and even wood-like and horn-like growths. The most famous sufferer from this disease is a guy who is nicknamed tree-man because he looks so much like a tree. 3. Mermaid Syndrome This is when a child is born with his or her legs fused together and it gives the impression of a mermaid’s tail. The babies born with this defect will die within a day or two because of complications in the development of their bladders and kidneys. There are only a handful of births that did not have the complications that came along with this condition. The girl in the photo was actually operated on and is doing great! 2. Progeria Progeria is extremely, extremely rare, and is estimated to only affect 1 in 8 million people. The disease causes accelerated aging and most patients don't make it past 14. The disease is caused by a mutation in the LMNA gene, a protein that provides support to the cell nucleus. 1. Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva Imagine your skeletal system slowly turning you into what essentially amounts to stone. That’s the horror of fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva, a disease of the connective tissue that causes the body to ‘repair’ damaged tissues by re-growing them as bone. There is no cure and what it boils down to is that your body slowly turns into a statue with limited to no flexibility. Presentation on some basic ideas in genetics and how these can effect our role in health care.Ultimately, all aspects of anatomy and physiology depend on, and derive from our genes. It is the genes which carry all of the information needed to construct the body, in the genetic code. Genetic disorders are those caused wholly by abnormalities in the genes. Numerous individual genetic disorders exist. They are normally classified by their mode of inheritance, this may be autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive or sex linked. Autosomal dominant disorders Autosomes are the 44 non-sex chromosomes present in cell nuclei. Autosomal dominant disorders will be manifest if there is a single copy of the abnormal gene present in the individual’s genotype. This means that when one parent is affected by a dominant disorder, any children have a 50% chance of inheriting the condition. For example, achondroplasia which is a form of dwarfism, is transmitted by a dominant gene. Huntington’s disease is also dominant and leads to psychiatric symptoms, abnormal movements and eventual dementia. Hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) leads to an abnormal increase in the thickness of the myocardium and is a cause of sudden death. Neurofibromatosis causes numerous small tumours to develop from the sheaths of peripheral and cranial nerves. The BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes significantly predispose to the development of breast and ovarian cancer and are also transmitted in an autosomal dominant pattern.

Adrian Bird CBE FMedSci FRS is the Buchanan Chair of Genetics at the University of Edinburgh. The human genome sequence has been available for more than a decade, but its significance is still not fully understood. While most human genes have been identified, there is much to learn about the DNA signals that control them. This lecture described an unusually short DNA sequence, just two base pairs long, CG, which occurs in several chemically different forms. Defects in signalling by CG are implicated in disease. For example, the autism spectrum disorder Rett syndrome is caused by loss of a protein that reads methylated CG and affects the activity of genes. The Royal Society GlaxoSmithKline Prize Lecture is awarded for original contributions to medical and veterinary sciences published within ten years from the date of the award.

This bleeding can damage your organs and tissues and may be life threatening. Dr. High and her team have developed a gene-repair kit that treats the blood-clotting disorder hemophilia in animal models. The technique replaces a defective gene with a corrected version. Nazmi is 15 years old and lives in Malaysia. Nazmi has Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type II so he has a progressive degeneration of his muscles. Nazmi tells us “SMA makes me weak physically but it doesn’t affect me mentally.” “He has been in a wheelchair since he was eight so he loses his power of his lower limbs and he gradually will lose power of his upper limbs so right now he can’t comb his hair or wash his hair but he is able to brush his teeth or feed himself. That will slowly deteriorate and so he will not be able to do a lot of things for himself later on as time goes by.” Dr Chong “We are very proud of him, he is a very intelligent child” Nazmi’s mother Hamidah Abdul Aziz tells us, “very cleaver and smart, it’s so easy for us to care for him, we would follow his wishes.” “With SMA I try to remain happy and play chess to forget about my illness.” Nazmi tells us. “Very good chess player. He is a very good chess player. When I saw his books, it was alien to me the things that he was doing. I’m not very good in chess. I just play basic. When I saw this, “Oh you are very good Nazmi” and he said “I practiced this.” Devaki Krishnah, Nazmi’s Teacher. “He is a really hardworking person and he follows instructions very well. That's why he was top of the class in English last year. Then I had to teach the hearing impaired students I used to ask him, “What do you say? How do you sign for this?” Now he communicates with them like normal daily every day easy for him. He doesn't find anything difficult in it, so he will learn very fast. That was very interesting.” Devaki Krishnah, Nazmi’s Teacher. “He knows his life will be shortened and yet he has chosen to challenge himself. He has only picked up chess two years ago and in two years he has won a medal for the country.” Dr Chong “Then that's not enough, he goes on to learn blind chess. I mean how incredible is that? Matilda the cat had to see an eye specialist, who told her owners that their pet might eventually have to undergo surgery to remove both eyes. When the owners adopted Matilda, the cat had regular eyes, but then her eyes started having noticeable problems. The lenses in both of the cat's eyes detached, making them blind and swollen. Matilda's owners took the cat to several veterinarians and used different treatments before they could identify the disorder. The owners started a GoFundMe page to pay for the cat's medical treatment, and reached the goal of $2,500 in a few days.
