Along busy Hamra street, in west Beirut, Syrians fleeing their country's civil war have opened up scores of shops that compete with older ones run by Lebanese already hurting because of a sharp drop in tourism.
Restaurants run by Syrians offer menus that rival Lebanon's famed Mediterranean cuisine, selling traditional dishes from the Syrian cities of Aleppo and Damascus.
On street corners, Syrians now sell everything from vegetables, falafel and flower arrangements, assembled and wrapped Syrian style.
Indeed, many of the neighbourhood shops' employees, lorry drivers, and delivery boys are Syrian - as increasingly are the city's doormen.
"Lebanon is in need of labourers," Nabil, a Syrian waiter, told The Associated Press. "Syrian labourers are prepared to work longer hours than Lebanese."
But the influx of Syrian refugees in desperate search of work is posing additional problems to an economy that's long struggled with spillover from the Syrian conflict.
More than a million Syrians have fled to Lebanon - a country of 4.5 million before the Syrian crisis.
And that's put a strain on its already dilapidated infrastructure and health, education and electricity services.
The influx of Syrians has also aggravated social tensions, with many Lebanese merchants and workers grumbling about the competition for jobs and business.
Many Lebanese businesses compensate by hiring Syrians who will work for very little salary, and Lebanese workers claim their bosses can now ignore their demands.
Kamel Wazne, a professor of finance at the American University of Beirut, says Syrian merchants and workers are competing head-to-head for jobs with the Lebanese.
He says the Syrian workers do not pay taxes, open businesses illegally and work at half the price of their Lebanese competitors.
"It is competing with the Lebanese and forcing the Lebanese business community to shut down," said Wazne.
Perhaps more worryingly, he says that the economic competition could fuel long-existing political tensions.
The Lebanese government is "divided between the people who are supporting the regime and people who are against the regime," he explains.
"Lebanon is a volcano waiting to explode," he adds ominously.
Wedged between Syria and Israel, and with a weak central government, Lebanon has long been a casualty of regional politics and its own perpetual sectarian strife.
The country has been without a government since March, and parliament is all but paralysed because of political disputes.
Lebanon has also borne the brunt of the war next door for the past two years.
Not only has the country seen episodes of sectarian violence and kidnappings, it has also witnessed multiple bombings in recent months.
The latest of those attacks - in the northern city of Tripoli in August - killed 47 people and injured more than 400.
In particular, the spillover has devastated the tourism sector, a mainstay of the Lebanese economy.
This summer saw few of the Gulf Arabs who normally pack restaurants and cafes to enjoy Lebanon's cuisine, smoke fragrant water-pipes and hit its beach fronts.
The slowdown in tourism hasn't helped the Lebanese economy, which was already suffering before the war in Syria.
Lebanon has a public debt estimated at 58 billion dollars US dollars - or about 135 percent of its GDP.
Typifying the tension over the influx of Syrian refugees has been an ongoing series of strikes this summer at Lebanon's state-owned electricity company.
One worker said that the company tried to hire Syrians at a power plant north of Beirut.
"They tried to bring Syrian workers to the Zouk power plant but we stopped them and we are pretty sure they will not do it again," he said.
Indeed, unemployment rates are to double to more than 20 percent.

Fleeing refugees. Millions of people from the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, are fleeing the unrest in their homelands, and are looking for a better place to live. For example, since 2011, about one fifth of the population of Syria, over 4 million Syrians, have been uprooted because of a long civil war. More than 2 million are children. Many have fled to neighboring countries. But it’s not that easy, and no good deed goes unpunished. Turkey has taken in about 2 million people. What the old fashioned media doesn’t mention is that afterwards, Turkey’s economy, tourist industry, and infrastructure, suffered unimaginable losses and setbacks. The country of Lebanon has taken in over a million refugees. Amazing since Lebanon only had 4 million Lebanese people to begin with. But the old fashioned media never asks, how’s that worked out for you? So we asked, how has that worked out, and the Lebanese Social Affairs Minister, Derbas, said Lebanon’s infrastructure, which was projected to last a decade and a half, has been so worn out and damaged by increased use by refugees, that it will have to be completely rebuilt in less than two years. He also said that Lebanon is suffering enormous economic losses since refugees are using up natural resources, as well as an enormous amount of electricity, without any ability to pay for anything they consume. The already beleaguered people of Lebanon are stuck paying the bill for their new guests. Worse yet, a reported 500,000 tourists have cancelled plans to visit Lebanon, creating even more economic hardship and losses for the Lebanese people. Think about it. Then we visit with the sad people of Greece, already suffering from the worst economic crisis in Greece’s history. They are now being overrun by refugees as well. Today, new refugees joined the 13,000 refugees already on the Greek island of Lesvos. Many refugees reportedly grew impatient at what they perceived as the lack of welcoming, and the slow registration process, and began rioting, fighting, beating, destroying property, and throwing rocks at residents and the police. We were told by our European desk that the panicked mayor called for a state of emergency, as police tried to protect their Greek town, and had to resort to tear gas and flash grenades to regain control of the streets from the crazed and rampaging refugees. At the same time, refugees swarmed the country of Hungary as Hungarian officials seemed woefully overwhelmed. Refugees expressed anger for the Hungarians lack of ability to help them, and broke out of camps and destroyed property, as they forced their way through Hungary. Reportedly often chanting, roving groups of refugees refused to cooperate with the authorities of the country that they had trespassed into, and often refused food and water offered to them by police officers and civilians, pushing the food away with screams of “No food! No Hungary!” Hungarian prime minister vowed not to let Europeans become. Quote. a minority on our own continent. End quote. In the meanwhile, thousands and thousands of refugees continued marching on foot through Hungary towards Austria and Germany.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced she was opening the doors of her country to refugees, and Germany expects between 5 and 10 thousand refugees today alone, and some 800,000 refugees and migrants in total this year. We’ll ask, how’s that working out for you, in a follow up report. In contrast, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel started building a fence to protect itself from refugees and other illegal immigrants. Netanyahu said. Quote. We will not allow Israel to be submerged by a wave of illegal migrants and terrorist activists. End quote. Israel. Our only friend and ally in the Middle East. Full of really smart people. And the Israeli prime minister calls the refugees. quote. illegal migrants and terrorist activists. End quote. How very very interesting. Is Israel warning us that the refugees may include terrorists? If Israel isn’t willing to risk their country’s people, why are so many European leaders not taking their lead? Does Israel know something we don’t know about the potential terrorist tendencies and violent nature of some of these refugees? Think about it. Conspiracy Boulder News will return after this break.

Travel video about destination Syria.
Syria is an ancient country of culture located between the Mediterranean and the desert. Its ancient desert metropolises, old villages, impenetrable fortresses and biblical harbour towns have witnessed the rich and fascinating history of bygone times.Damascus is the capital of Syria and symbol of culture in the Near East and located a hundred kilometres from the Mediterranean coast. The Kalaa Citadel is situated on the periphery of the old town that was once surrounded by huge walls and it was from there that Saladin fended off the attacks of the Crusaders. The Khan As´Ad Pasha is often referred to as being the most beautiful caravansary in the Near East. Its inner courtyard is covered by eight mighty and partly painted cupolas each of which is supported by four pillars. Set amid the desert savannah of Syria are the proud remains of a unique and mysterious metropolis, Palmyra, a legendary ancient city that was built due to the existence of the Tadmur Oasis. The shortest and fastest route from the Mediterranean to Mesopotamia and Persia travels directly past the Tadmur Oasis thus it was only a question of time until an important trading post was founded there. Around a quarter of a million Bedouins live in Syria’s desert areas. They are nomads who speak Arabic and belong to the Muslim faith and their income is derived from sheep, goats and camels which produce both milk and meat. They travel the desert accompanied by their animals. Further north on the edge of the fertile Al Ghab Ditch is the ancient metropolis of Apameia, one of the most beautiful cities in the Near East. Apart from Bosra and Palmyra this huge city of ruins is one of the most important Hellenist regions in Syria. Syria is the Pearl Of The East. With deserts, wadis and mountains, castles and crusader fortresses, Roman ruins, palaces and mosques. A legendary country between both past and future whose cultural treasures still survive today.

Take a tour of Ancient City of Bosra in Bosra, Syrian Arab Republic -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
The half-standing ruins of this dark-stoned city rise out of the southern Syrian landscape.
Nearly deserted today, Bosra has a great deal of history from thousands of years of habitation by different cultures.
The city is at least old enough to have appeared in historical documents from the fourteenth century BC.
Early in the first millennium AD, Bosra became a part of the Roman Empire, which is the strongest influence seen at work in the ruins.
Since then, it has been the territory of the Byzantine Empire and the Arabs who swept in during the seventh century.
Among the ruined city's Roman and Christian structures, the fortified amphitheater is probably the greatest.
This deep, stadium-like building is mostly intact and gives a taste of what Bosra may once have been like.

Travel video about destination Damascus in Syria.
Damascus is the capital of Syria and is a symbol of culture in the Near East. A hundred kilometres from the Mediterranean coast, the strategically located city was once the capital of the Umayyad.Cannons, the busts of various presidents and military vehicles are displayed in the large courtyard of the Takiyeh Mosque, an ancient Dervish monastery complex. Built in 1554 and designed by Ottoman master architect, Sinan, it also includes an adjoining inn for the numerous pilgrims who travelled to Mecca. Damascus has always been much prized: by the pharaohs and the Babylonian monarch, Nebukadnezar, and later, Alexander The Great. Then came Persian, Roman and Islamic emperors followed by the Crusaders and Mongols. The Kalaa Citadel is situated on the periphery of the old town that was once surrounded by huge walls. It was from here that Saladin fended off the attacks of the Crusaders. The Romans built a fort here that was constantly extended with impressive walls and towers and located directly outside the city wall, the River Barada was also of strategic importance. Although the Mongols destroyed the inner buildings, the fortress walls survived. The Suq is an important part of every Islamic city, a market that originated in ancient times. Thousands of shops in numerous interconnected lanes form the commercial heart of Damascus. In the Gold Suq everything glitters, bracelets, rings and even a large variety of kitchen utensils. Damascus has for thousands of years been a place desired by the powerful. Yet it has managed to survive and is still the most beautiful capital city in the Near East.

Syria, officially the Syrian Arab Republic, is a country in Western Asia, bordering Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea to the west, Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, and Israel to the southwest. Its capital Damascus is among the oldest continuously-inhabited cities in the world. A country of fertile plains, high mountains, and deserts, it is home to diverse ethnic and religious groups, including the Arab, Greeks, Armenians, Assyrians, Kurds, Circassians, Mhallami, Mandeans and Turks. Religious groups include Sunni, Christians, Alawite, Druze religion, Mandeanism and Yezidi. Sunni Arabs make up the largest population group in Syria.
In English, the name "Syria" was formerly synonymous with the Levant (known in Arabic as al-Sham) while the modern state encompasses the sites of several ancient kingdoms and empires, including the Eblan civilization of the 3rd millennium BC. In the Islamic era, Damascus was the seat of the Umayyad Caliphate and a provincial capital of the Mamluk Sultanate in Egypt.
The modern Syrian state was established after World War I as a French mandate, and represented the largest Arab state to emerge from the formerly Ottoman-ruled Arab Levant. It gained independence in April 1946, as a parliamentary republic. The post-independence period was tumultuous, and a large number of military coups and coup attempts shook the country in the period 1949–1971. Between 1958-61, Syria entered a brief union with Egypt, which was terminated by a military coup. The Arab Republic of Syria came into being in 1963, transforming from the Republic of Syria in the Ba'athist coup d'état. Syria was under Emergency Law from 1963 to 2011, effectively suspending most constitutional protections for citizens, and its system of government is considered to be non-democratic. Bashar al-Assad has been president since 2000 and was preceded by his father Hafez al-Assad, who was in office from 1970 to 2000.

Travel video about destination Palmyra in Syria.
The ancient city of Palmyra is located in the Tadmur Oasis in the very heart of the Syrian savannah. Surrounded by arid desert it was once a proud and pulsating trading metropolisand everywhere can be seen relics of a bygone age that was full of myth and mystique. The influence of the legendary oasis city grew due to it having been regarded as a province of Rome. The Romans soon recognized the strategic importance of Palmyra as it was a vital centre of trade in the Near East. Palmyra’s fine buildings such as its Amphitheatre were typical of its impressive architecture. Most of the Tetrapylon has been restored. It towers high above the ancient ruins and the Great Colonnade was once the main street of the historic metropolis. Beyond the city walls in the Valley Of Tombs the mystic atmosphere of the former caravan city becomes apparent. Several well preserved mausoleums give the surreal looking desert landscape a truly ghostly atmosphere. The architecture of these multi-floored burial places are unique in the world. The view from the Arabian fortress extends across the picturesque ruins of the city to the endless horizons of the desert. The oasis and ancient remains of Palmyra look almost surreal as if in a dream yet the old ruins and the mighty fortress really do exist in very tangible and resplendent form.

A young couple from Mississippi faces federal charges after the pair was arrested over the weekend for conspiring and attempting to provide material support and resources to the Islamic State (ISIS) group.
The arrested couple, Jaelyn Delshaun Young, 20, and Muhammad Oda Dakhlalla, 22, had been in fact revealing their plans of joining ISIS to covert FBI agents online since May, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Young allegedly said her skills in math and chemistry and work experience at an analytical lab as well as her partner’s computer science skills would be useful to ISIS. The couple also expressed that they would love to provide medical aid, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Young said the wedding took place in June and the couple would travel to Istanbul and eventually enter Syria to join ISIS using honeymoon as their cover story, CNN reported.
The couple was arrested at the Golden Triangle Regional Airport Saturday morning, just before boarding a plane to Istanbul. They could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted, Reuters reported.

I walked the alley and found an unusual cafe. It is the story cafe. The storyteller is telling the old story cafe. Gore Syrian people to read because they can not understand even more, but people cheer and rejoice. Is it because the atmosphere ... Tourists are easy to indulge in their own Arabian Nights. Tip Trays, laid down in the story is chidatneun towards the climax. "Already I came in third place, very unique. It's one of the places you should see just once and you come to Syria. You can get a feeling of antiquity as if to return. It likes on very old Medina. I'll be a unique and interesting experience. "Finally, my travel story cafe out the end of the night Damascus also goes deeper.
