In our last lesson from the Book of Acts, Paul concluded his ministry at Athens. His next stop will be the city of Corinth where he will meet Aquila and Priscilla, who, like him were tentmakers.
Corinth was the capital of Achaia—on of the two provinces the Romans had divided Greece into when they conquered it. The peninsula which formed the southern part of Greece was at that time known as the province of Achaia. There was a rocky neck of land, about eight miles long and three miles wide, known as the Isthmus which connected Achaia with the continent. The city of Corinth was located on the southern portion of the Isthmus between the Aegean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean with a harbor opening to each of these major bodies of water.
Corinth was therefore an important city a commercial center of Paul’s day. Most of
the commerce passed through Corinth from the eastern and western regions of the Roman Empire. Ship owners preferred to transport their cargo across the narrow isthmus rather than make the dangerous voyage around the southern tip of the Grecian peninsula.
Engineers had invented a device by which small ships could be taken across the Isthmus on
rollers without unloading them. Corinth during the first century was similar to the Panama
Canal of today. Such a city naturally attracted men from all parts of the empire and became one of the wealthiest cities of the ancient world. As usual, riches brought with them luxury and sin. The very name of the city had become a synonym for immorality.
The majority of Corinth’s citizens were worshipers of Aphrodite, the goddess of love. To the south of the city stood a rock rising to the height of more than a thousand feet. On the summit of the hill stood the beautiful Temple of Aphrodite. Serving this goddess were a thousand priestesses, who served as temple prostitutes accommodating the sinful lusts of the men of that city. It was into this Satanic stronghold that Paul entered when Luke wrote, “Paul left Athens and went to Corinth” (Acts 18:1, NIV).

Year of the Bible
Church in the First Degree
Romans
Written to a church that he didn’t start, Paul details what we believe, why we believe it, and how we should live it.
More than likely, Paul wrote this letter while in Corinth, with a possible date of 56-57 A.D. Paul visited Corinth after a three year stay in Ephesus (Acts 20:31). His reference to sending the letter with Phoebe (16:1-2- who was from nearby Cenchrea), and his host Gaius (16:23) are key pieces of this proof. Gaius was a key convert to Christ in Corinth (1 Corinthians 1:14).
Paul had seen amazing impact in this part of Roman empire for the Gospel of Christ, but was yearning to go West to Rome and beyond (Romans 15:22-24). Some have wondered why he wrote such a complete guide and teaching to Rome since he was planning to visit.
On commentator points out that attempts on Paul’s life had already occurred and that the intensity of those against him was only growing. Later in Acts, church leaders in Ephesus had wept over the idea of Paul returning to Jerusalem, believing that it would ultimately lead to his death. The Holy Spirit had also told Paul that imprisonment and suffering was before him (Acts 20:23). So, in light of this, could Romans have been Paul writing it all down, so that if he died, instructions for how to take the Gospel of Christ onward were now in written form. The same commentator said this could be seen as a type of last will and testament. “If I die and can’t come to you personally, read this and you will know what to do”.
The Purpose of the Gospel of Christ (Romans 1:1-7)
Paul, a servant[a] of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 2 which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning his Son, who was descended from David[b] according to the flesh 4 and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, 6 including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ,
7 To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints:
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
To Proclaim Jesus as the Resurrected Lord, and call people to a salvation that produces an obedient faith.
