Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has defended his government's actions in the region since the uprising against his rule, which erupted in 2011.
In an exclusive interview with the BBC's Middle East Editor Jeremy Bowen, Mr Assad denied that his forces had dropped barrel bombs indiscriminately on rebel-held areas, killing thousands of civilians, and dismissed as propaganda a statement by the UN that his government often blocks access to besieged areas for relief organisations.
The Syrian leader also denied that there was a direct dialogue with the US-led coalition fighting Islamic State but confirmed that "general messages" were sometimes passed via third parties.

In statements to the journalists following the meeting with a French delegation, including a number of parliamentarians, intellectuals, and media men, headed by member of the French National Assembly Thierry Mariani, President al-Assad said, in response to a question about his reaction on what happened in Paris on Friday “First of all, we offer our condolences to the French families that lost dear members yesterday, and we are the closest people to this situation to understand what happened yesterday in France, because we have been suffering from this kind of terrorism for the last five years in Syria.
“And what happened in France yesterday cannot be separated from what happened in Beirut two days ago, because this is terrorism. That’s why you shouldn’t look at terrorism as separate arenas, like looking at Syria’s arena, Yemen, Libya, France. Actually, it’s one arena all around the world.”
Asked about where the Syrian intelligence services have any indication or information that either the people who committed this act came from Syria or were in contact with any group in Syria, the President said “No, we don’t have any information about what happened, but it’s not about the names, and who went and who didn’t. We warned about what’s going to happen in Europe three years ago, and we said don’t mess with the fault line in Syria. It’s going to be like an earthquake that will reverberate around the world, and unfortunately the European officials didn’t pay attention to what we said. They thought that we are threatening, and they didn’t learn from what happened at the beginning of this year, from Charlie Hebdo.”
He added “Just giving statements that you are against terrorism means nothing. You have to go and fight terrorism, you have to pursue the correct and right policies, that’s what they have to do.”
In his response to a question whether Syria is ready to fight with France against terrorism if they ask and help the French intelligence services, President Assad said
“They don’t have to ask; they only have to be serious. This is where we are ready to fight terrorism with them.”
“We are ready to fight terrorism with whoever wants to really fight terrorism, and the French government is not serious yet,” he added.
In a message he was asked to send to the French President Francois Hollande, President al-Assad said “Work for the sake and the interest of your people. And the question that any Frenchman would ask today: did the French policy during the last five years do any good to the French people? Actually, no. So, the first thing I’ll ask is to work for the interest of the French people, and if he wants to do that, he has to change his policy.”
Asked about the condition for the Syrian government and the French government to work together, or for the Syrian intelligence services to work with the French intelligence services, President Assad said “You cannot talk about intelligence cooperation without political cooperation. You cannot talk about intelligence cooperation in order to fight terrorism while at the same time your policies, the policies of the same government, are going in the direction of supporting terrorism. That’s what I meant by being serious.”

Russia's foreign minister says Bashar Assad is the legitimate president of Syria and that his troops are the only forces fighting against Daesh Takfiri militants in the war-torn country. Sergey Lavrov has said that the anti-terrorism fight in Syria would become efficient only after demand for Assad’s resignation is withdrawn. He rejected the resignation call by the Syrian opposition and some foreign countries as a QUOTE totally unrealistic and counterproductive precondition. Lavrov said the current conflict should be brought to an end through dialogue among Syrian parties, an issue which he said was raised during his recent meeting with representatives of Syrian opposition groups in Moscow. He added that the ISIL terrorism has been the product of foreign interference in the Middle East region.

Bashar al-Assad is the President of the Syrian Arab Republic, Regional Secretary of the Baath Party, and the son of former President Hafez al-Assad.
Originally trained as a doctor, Assad attended medical school at the University of Damascus Faculty of Medicine. He then went on to get subspecialty training in ophthalmology in London's academic hospitals. Initially Assad had few political aspirations; his father had been grooming Bashar's older brother, Basil al-Assad, to be the future president. However, Basil's death in an automobile accident in 1994 suddenly made Bashar his father's new heir apparent. When the elder Assad died in 2000, Bashar was elected President unopposed with apparent massive popular support, after Syria's Majlis Al Shaa'b (Parliament) swiftly voted to lower the minimum age for candidates from 40 to 34.
Upon becoming President, Bashar al-Assad promised economic and political reforms to Syria, but he has so far delivered little change from the status quo. The Baath Party remains in control of the parliament, and is constitutionally the "leading party" of the state.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad says terrorists have managed to capture a number of regions in Syria because they're being supported by certain foreign countries.
In an interview with China's Phoenix TV, Assad said that all kinds of support to the ISIL Takfiri terrorists pass through Turkey in coordination with Saudi Arabia and Qatar. He added that such assistance is actually being overlooked by the United States and Western countries. Assad slammed the US-led coalition for its failure to contain the terrorists, adding that the US-led campaign in Syria has yielded no results other than helping the terrorists gain more ground and recruit more members from around the world. The Syrian President hailed Russia's military involvement, adding that since the beginning of the Russian campaign, terrorists have begun to retreat and flee in thousands. .

President Obama said in 2012 that if the Assad regime in Syria carried out a chemical weapons attack, it would be a "red line" whose crossing would bring "enormous consequences."
So when Assad appeared to cross that line in August of 2013, Obama ordered the U.S. military to get ready.
But as FRONTLINE details in this excerpt from "Obama at War," the president had second thoughts.

Syria is an ancient country of culture located between the Mediterranean and the desert. Its ancient desert metropolises, old villages, impenetrable fortresses and biblical harbour towns have witnessed the rich and fascinating history of bygone times.Damascus is the capital of Syria and symbol of culture in the Near East and located a hundred kilometres from the Mediterranean coast. The Kalaa Citadel is situated on the periphery of the old town that was once surrounded by huge walls and it was from there that Saladin fended off the attacks of the Crusaders. The Khan As´Ad Pasha is often referred to as being the most beautiful caravansary in the Near East. Its inner courtyard is covered by eight mighty and partly painted cupolas each of which is supported by four pillars. Set amid the desert savannah of Syria are the proud remains of a unique and mysterious metropolis, Palmyra, a legendary ancient city that was built due to the existence of the Tadmur Oasis. The shortest and fastest route from the Mediterranean to Mesopotamia and Persia travels directly past the Tadmur Oasis thus it was only a question of time until an important trading post was founded there. Around a quarter of a million Bedouins live in Syria’s desert areas. They are nomads who speak Arabic and belong to the Muslim faith and their income is derived from sheep, goats and camels which produce both milk and meat. They travel the desert accompanied by their animals. Further north on the edge of the fertile Al Ghab Ditch is the ancient metropolis of Apameia, one of the most beautiful cities in the Near East. Apart from Bosra and Palmyra this huge city of ruins is one of the most important Hellenist regions in Syria. Syria is the Pearl Of The East. With deserts, wadis and mountains, castles and crusader fortresses, Roman ruins, palaces and mosques. A legendary country between both past and future whose cultural treasures still survive today.

Take a tour of Ancient City of Bosra in Bosra, Syrian Arab Republic -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
The half-standing ruins of this dark-stoned city rise out of the southern Syrian landscape.
Nearly deserted today, Bosra has a great deal of history from thousands of years of habitation by different cultures.
The city is at least old enough to have appeared in historical documents from the fourteenth century BC.
Early in the first millennium AD, Bosra became a part of the Roman Empire, which is the strongest influence seen at work in the ruins.
Since then, it has been the territory of the Byzantine Empire and the Arabs who swept in during the seventh century.
Among the ruined city's Roman and Christian structures, the fortified amphitheater is probably the greatest.
This deep, stadium-like building is mostly intact and gives a taste of what Bosra may once have been like.

This deep, stadium-like building is mostly intact and gives a taste of what Bosra may once have been like.

Travel video about destination Damascus in Syria.
Damascus is the capital of Syria and is a symbol of culture in the Near East. A hundred kilometres from the Mediterranean coast, the strategically located city was once the capital of the Umayyad.Cannons, the busts of various presidents and military vehicles are displayed in the large courtyard of the Takiyeh Mosque, an ancient Dervish monastery complex. Built in 1554 and designed by Ottoman master architect, Sinan, it also includes an adjoining inn for the numerous pilgrims who travelled to Mecca. Damascus has always been much prized: by the pharaohs and the Babylonian monarch, Nebukadnezar, and later, Alexander The Great. Then came Persian, Roman and Islamic emperors followed by the Crusaders and Mongols. The Kalaa Citadel is situated on the periphery of the old town that was once surrounded by huge walls. It was from here that Saladin fended off the attacks of the Crusaders. The Romans built a fort here that was constantly extended with impressive walls and towers and located directly outside the city wall, the River Barada was also of strategic importance. Although the Mongols destroyed the inner buildings, the fortress walls survived. The Suq is an important part of every Islamic city, a market that originated in ancient times. Thousands of shops in numerous interconnected lanes form the commercial heart of Damascus. In the Gold Suq everything glitters, bracelets, rings and even a large variety of kitchen utensils. Damascus has for thousands of years been a place desired by the powerful. Yet it has managed to survive and is still the most beautiful capital city in the Near East.

Syria, officially the Syrian Arab Republic, is a country in Western Asia, bordering Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea to the west, Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, and Israel to the southwest. Its capital Damascus is among the oldest continuously-inhabited cities in the world. A country of fertile plains, high mountains, and deserts, it is home to diverse ethnic and religious groups, including the Arab, Greeks, Armenians, Assyrians, Kurds, Circassians, Mhallami, Mandeans and Turks. Religious groups include Sunni, Christians, Alawite, Druze religion, Mandeanism and Yezidi. Sunni Arabs make up the largest population group in Syria.
In English, the name "Syria" was formerly synonymous with the Levant (known in Arabic as al-Sham) while the modern state encompasses the sites of several ancient kingdoms and empires, including the Eblan civilization of the 3rd millennium BC. In the Islamic era, Damascus was the seat of the Umayyad Caliphate and a provincial capital of the Mamluk Sultanate in Egypt.
The modern Syrian state was established after World War I as a French mandate, and represented the largest Arab state to emerge from the formerly Ottoman-ruled Arab Levant. It gained independence in April 1946, as a parliamentary republic. The post-independence period was tumultuous, and a large number of military coups and coup attempts shook the country in the period 1949–1971. Between 1958-61, Syria entered a brief union with Egypt, which was terminated by a military coup. The Arab Republic of Syria came into being in 1963, transforming from the Republic of Syria in the Ba'athist coup d'état. Syria was under Emergency Law from 1963 to 2011, effectively suspending most constitutional protections for citizens, and its system of government is considered to be non-democratic. Bashar al-Assad has been president since 2000 and was preceded by his father Hafez al-Assad, who was in office from 1970 to 2000.

Travel video about destination Palmyra in Syria.
The ancient city of Palmyra is located in the Tadmur Oasis in the very heart of the Syrian savannah. Surrounded by arid desert it was once a proud and pulsating trading metropolisand everywhere can be seen relics of a bygone age that was full of myth and mystique. The influence of the legendary oasis city grew due to it having been regarded as a province of Rome. The Romans soon recognized the strategic importance of Palmyra as it was a vital centre of trade in the Near East. Palmyra’s fine buildings such as its Amphitheatre were typical of its impressive architecture. Most of the Tetrapylon has been restored. It towers high above the ancient ruins and the Great Colonnade was once the main street of the historic metropolis. Beyond the city walls in the Valley Of Tombs the mystic atmosphere of the former caravan city becomes apparent. Several well preserved mausoleums give the surreal looking desert landscape a truly ghostly atmosphere. The architecture of these multi-floored burial places are unique in the world. The view from the Arabian fortress extends across the picturesque ruins of the city to the endless horizons of the desert. The oasis and ancient remains of Palmyra look almost surreal as if in a dream yet the old ruins and the mighty fortress really do exist in very tangible and resplendent form.

A young couple from Mississippi faces federal charges after the pair was arrested over the weekend for conspiring and attempting to provide material support and resources to the Islamic State (ISIS) group.
The arrested couple, Jaelyn Delshaun Young, 20, and Muhammad Oda Dakhlalla, 22, had been in fact revealing their plans of joining ISIS to covert FBI agents online since May, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Young allegedly said her skills in math and chemistry and work experience at an analytical lab as well as her partner’s computer science skills would be useful to ISIS. The couple also expressed that they would love to provide medical aid, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Young said the wedding took place in June and the couple would travel to Istanbul and eventually enter Syria to join ISIS using honeymoon as their cover story, CNN reported.
The couple was arrested at the Golden Triangle Regional Airport Saturday morning, just before boarding a plane to Istanbul. They could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted, Reuters reported.

I walked the alley and found an unusual cafe. It is the story cafe. The storyteller is telling the old story cafe. Gore Syrian people to read because they can not understand even more, but people cheer and rejoice. Is it because the atmosphere ... Tourists are easy to indulge in their own Arabian Nights. Tip Trays, laid down in the story is chidatneun towards the climax. "Already I came in third place, very unique. It's one of the places you should see just once and you come to Syria. You can get a feeling of antiquity as if to return. It likes on very old Medina. I'll be a unique and interesting experience. "Finally, my travel story cafe out the end of the night Damascus also goes deeper.

Democratic Virginia Senator Tim Kaine said on MSNBC Thursday that he believed President Barack Obama‘s legal authority to wage war against ISIL in Syria was “very, very questionable.”The president started the battle August 8, 2014, unilaterally, since Congress was in recess…” Kaine said on Meet the Press Daily. “The president said ‘I want to protect the embassy and protect Mt. Sinjar Yazidis from a humanitarian crisis, this is what we’re going to do.’”
“What has happened since then, in nearly 16 months, this war against ISIL has mutated,” he said. “It’s not just Iraq and Syria, it’s also ISIL presence in Afghanistan, Yemen, Somalia, Libya, now potentially the Sinai. We’ve even deployed troops to Cameroon to be positioned against Boko Haram.”
“We’ve lost American hostages, American service members not in combat, and now a combat death. That’s cost $4.7 billion, and Congress has still not had a vote to authorize a war,” he said. “I view of the legal authority of it as very, very questionable now.”

Lt. Col. Ralph Peters (Ret.) said on "The O'Reilly Factor" tonight that President Obama's deployment of 50 special ops forces to combat ISIS in Syria shows that the president isn't trying to defeat radical Islam, he's just trying to get to the end of his presidency.
"It's getting worse and worse and worse, and he's trying to do the absolute minimum to stave off an open catastrophe," Peters said.
He asserted that Obama's inner circle knows nothing about history or military affairs, living in "fantasy world" where radical Islam isn't a threat and 50 U.S. troops make a major difference in a civil war.
"We have a president whose vision of the world has been, remains and will remain divorced from reality," Peters said. "At this point, I think the American people see the Islamic State is a threat, the president doesn't see it [and] he's not acting."
"The leftist response is always, 'Well, you know, the American people are tired of war.' No! They're tired of losing. They're tired of seeing their sons and daughters killed and maimed for the vanity, the vanity of an inept and ineffective and cowardly president."

When President Barack Obama dramatically shifted his Syria policy last week and announced he would station Special Operations forces in the war-plagued country, Republicans were quick to criticize the move.
They derided his decision to send fewer than 50 troops to northern Syria to "advise and assist" Kurdish and Arab fighters battling ISIS as half-hearted and woefully insufficient.
"I think we have a president who doesn't know what he is doing," Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump told CNN over the weekend. "You either do it or you don't do it."
House Armed Services Chairman Mac Thornberry, a Texas Republican, warned that, "these steps may prove to be too little, too late."
So can such a small contingent of troops, even if they're from the elite Special Operations units, have an impact? Yes and no.
The White House says these Special Operations forces will be able to assess the situation on the ground and help local fighters with operational planning, tactics and logistics.

"The President does expect that they can have an impact in intensifying our strategy for building the capacity of local forces inside of Syria for taking the fight on the ground to ISIL in their own country," White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said last week, using another acronym for ISIS.
He also called the elite soldiers an "important force multiplier anywhere around the world they are deployed."
Nicholas Heras of the Center for a New American Security's Middle East Security Program, said that can be true -- and in this case, the small number stands to make the most impact if its deployment is viewed as part of the bigger strategy.
The plan is really about applying a workable strategic model along the lines Earnest outlined that can be scaled up, Heras said.
This deployment is merely the first test to see if the U.S. forces can "play a coordinating role that has an impact on the ground," according to Heras.
By embedding Special Forces with local Sunni anti-ISIS groups, Heras said the administration hopes to build up a multi-ethnic democratic Syrian coalition and facilitate coordination with Kurdish fighters to bring the fight to ISIS.

Russia's president has described fighting terrorism as what his government is seeking in Syria and the wider world. Vladimir Putin stressed Moscow's readiness to cooperate with all forces in this regard.
Vladimir Putin made the remarks in Moscow where he took part in an opening ceremony of a cultural exhibition. Earlier on Monday Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova echoed the Kremlin’s stance saying the future of President Bashar al-Assad can only be decided by the people of Syria. She said Syria is a sovereign country and its people can decide on its fate. The future of the Syrian president has remained a bone of contention in the talks to resolve the country’s crisis, especially last week’s negotiations in Vienna on the issue.

When asked about previous statements that the U.S. would not be putting “boots on the ground” in Syria, President Barack Obama says he has “been consistent throughout.” The president was asked by NBC News on Monday about the decision to deploy U.S. Special Operations forces in northern Syria. Lester Holt asked Obama,“ Many will look at that and say you’ve broken your promise about boots on ground. Have you?”
“Well keep in mind we have run special ops already and really this is just an extension of what we are continuing to do,” Obama said. “We are not putting U.S. troops on frontlines fighting firefights with ISIL. But I’ve been consistent throughout that we are not going to be fighting like we did in Iraq with battalions and occupations. That doesn’t solve the problem.” On many occasions over the past two years President Obama has said that his administration has not been considering a “boots on the ground” approach in Syria. On Friday, the White House announced the deployment of "less than 50" Special Operations forces to assist rebel forces combating ISIS in Syria.

Russia back tracks on demands to retain Syrian President Bashar al-Assad
In an apparent effort to set the stage for transition talks, a Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman said on Tuesday that Moscow does not consider it a matter of principle that Syrian President Bashar Assad should stay in power.
Asked whether it was crucial for Moscow that Assad stays, Maria Zakharova said on the Ekho Moskvy radio station: "Absolutely not, we've never said that."
"What we did say is a regime change in Syria could become a local or even regional catastrophe," she said, adding that "only the Syrian people can decide the president's fate."
Russia is believed to be Assad's strongest backer and has previously balked at the West's suggestions that the Syrian president should be ousted.
Russia in September began carrying out air strikes at Islamic State fighters in Syria at Assad's request.
Earlier on Tuesday, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov told Russian news agencies that Moscow is aiming to host a round of talks between Syrian officials and opposition leaders next week.
Bogdanov said the Syrian government has agreed to participate, but that it is unclear which opposition groups might come. He did not give a specific date for the proposed talks.
The talks are expected to be discussed Wednesday at a meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and U.N. Syrian envoy Staffan de Mistura, Bogdanov said.
Assad made a surprise visit to Moscow last month, which was viewed as a signal that Russia ultimately seeks a political settlement after weeks of heavy airstrikes in Syria, although the terms of such an arrangement are uncertain.
In a surprising about face, the Russian Foreign Ministry has said that it is not crucial to retain President Bashar al-Assad's position in Syria, a reversal of its earlier intentions to preserve his presidency using military power. Russia's previous insistence on keeping Assad put the country at odds with the United States and its allies. In the announcement, reported by Reuters and Russia's RIA Novosti news agency, Russia said it would be inviting representatives from the Syrian government and opposition groups to Moscow for peace talks.
Last week, more than a dozen parties, including the United States and Russia, agreed to work toward establishing a nationwide cease-fire in Syria, with the eventual goal of holding internationally supervised free and fair elections. At the time, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the decision as to who would lead Syria would be left up to the Syrian people.

Russian's president has described fighting terrorism as what his government is seeking in Syria and the wider world.
The future of Syrian president has remained a bone of contention in talks to resolve the country’s crisis, especially last week’s negotiations in Vienna on the issue.

Republican Carly Fiorina says she's glad the president has decided to send around 50 Special Operations troops into Syria to fight Islamic State terrorists. The White House announcement on Friday is a "recognition that you cannot have a successful bombing campaign without people on the ground telling you where to place the bomb. So, he's sort of come to reality," Carly Fiorina told "Fox News Sunday." "On the other hand, it's also too little too late. I think this is a reflection of the reality, that when America does not act, when we do not lead as we have not the last three years under this president, our options become very constrained and the situation becomes more dangerous.
"I'm glad he did this, but we still do not have a strategy in Syria. We do not have a strategy to deal with ISIS...And so, as a result, the situation is far more complicated than it was three years ago when he started talking big about Bashar al Assad must go and red lines cannot be crossed, and now we have Russia and Iran in the middle of Syria calling the shots. "When we do not lead, the world becomes a much more dangerous and tragic place, and we are seeing that in Syria." Host John Roberts asked Fiorina what the president should do if U.S. troops are hit in a Russian bombing attack. "Well, you know, the president has said he doesn't believe in no-fly zones, for example, and, of course, no-fly zones are very effective. They have been effective in the past. And we need to establish one. We need to makes crystal clear to Vladimir Putin that our jets will fly when and where they want, that our troops cannot be threatened in any way by Russia.
"But so far, this president has done none of that, although he and his secretary of state continue to talk to Russia, which is inexplicable to me, because it's pretty clear that the Russians, while they're talking to us are also lying to us. We need to act now, in the way that sends an unmistakable message. "And it is why, as president of the United States, in addition to having a strategy in Syria and for ISIS, I would also be rebuilding the Sixth Fleet, right under Vladimir Putin's nose, rebuilding the missile defense program in Poland, so he must see strength and resolve from the United States of America. And he has not."

Obama and his administration proclaimed "NO Boots on the Ground in Syria" -
Obama came got elected in 2008 with the promise of change and a moral anti-war stand. What happened?
Obama is known as the drone president, far exceeding Bush's use of drones.
Obama has authorized the assassination of American citizen abroad with no trial. Just a presidential decree - 'kill him.'
"Habeas corpus - Latin: a court petition, which orders that a person being detained be produced before a judge for a hearing to decide whether the detention is lawful. Habeas corpus was one of the concessions the British Monarch made in the Magna Carta and has stood as a basic individual right against arbitrary arrest and imprisonment."
Gitmo detainees held for years and more than a decade in some instance without charges or trial.. see Shaker Aamer no charges ever filed, and no evidence presented and tested at a trial.
Now the Obama administration is - IS - putting American boots on the ground in Syria with no declaration of war, no request by Syria, no UN mandate. This is being done to support so called moderate rebels...WTF are moderate rebels? Are they so moderate that Obama would let them immigrate to the USA if things went bad for them in Syria? I bet NO...
On top of all this BS war stuff, the administration of Obama is blowing through huge wads of US money that could go to schools and education, infrastructure, policing, cities, healthcare...pick it, billions wasted on a war with no end in sight.

Barack Obama G20 Speech 2015 FULL Barack Obama News Conference G20 Summit Antalya, Turkey Barack Obama G20 Speech Antalya, Turkey FULL Barack Obama News Conference G20 Summit Barack Obama G20 Speech FULL Barack Obama News Conference G20 Summit Antalya, Turkey U.S. President Barack Obama doubled down on his foreign policy strategy toward Syria Monday, saying during a closing speech at the Group of 20, or G-20, summit in Antalya, Turkey, that the efforts in the region to combat the growing threat of the Islamic State are accelerating but that he does not plan on altering the overall strategy. After Russia and the United States reached an agreement to mediate a ceasefire between Syria's opposition and ruling regime, Obama said his administration would not put more troops on the ground in Syria.
His remarks come after a tumultuous weekend in the wake of a
Obama asked that people keep in mind that the threat posed by terrorist groups is not new, and that his administration has been worried about attacks like those that took place in Paris Friday since he took office nearly seven years ago. On Monday, he said the threat of terrorism is difficult to approach because the enemy is willing to kill themselves during attacks.
“If you have a handful of people who don’t mind dying they can kill a lot of people. That’s one of the challenges of terrorism,” Obama said. “It’s not their sophistication or the particular weaponry they possess, but it is the ideology they carry with them and their willingness to die.” His remarks can be seen below:
Responding to criticism in his own country, the Obama said Republicans seeking his office when he leaves his second term in January 2017 generally didn’t have differing strategy ideas than his. He said that they present it in a way that implies some false level of strength, which he would not do.
“What I do not do is to take actions either because it is going to work politically or it’s going to somehow in the abstract make America look tough or make me look tough,” he said.
Obama continued to denounce the assertion by some that the conflict in the Middle East is a war with the religion of Islam. He repeated the message he has made before, saying that ISIS does not represent the whole of Muslims across the globe. He invoked statements made by former President George W. Bush, a Republican, soon after the 9/11 attacks that the U.S. was “not at war with Islam or Muslims.”
“Whether you are European or American, you know, the values that we are defending, the values we’re fighting against [ISIS] for are precisely that we don’t discriminate against people because of their faith,” Obama said. “It is good to remember that the United States does not have a religious test and we are a nation of many peoples of different faiths. Those are the universal values we stand for. That’s what my administration intends to stand for.”
The G-20 summit is a congregation of the leaders of the world's 20 major economies that tends to focus on economic issues, but over the past two days, leaders have focused pledging to ramp up the fight the Islamic State group, even as they offered few precise details on a plan for doing so. They also discussed the influx of refugees into Europe as a result of fighting in Syria and other countries.
The summit's focus on refugees and the Islamic State group, also known as ISIS or ISIL, came after the militant group claimed responsibility for a series of attacks in Paris Friday night that left 129 dead and more than 350 injured. It also took responsibility for twin suicide bombings in Beirut Thursday that killed at least 43 people.

VICE News filmmaker Medyan Dairieh gains exclusive access to the Syrian branch of al Qaeda, al Nusra, a jihadist group fighting against President Bashar al-Assad’s forces and the Islamic State (IS).
Spending more than a month with al Nusra and exploring their expanding territory, Dairieh meets the highest-ranking members of the organization, who reveal their identity on screen for the first time and discuss their military doctrine.
Al Nusra, which swore allegiance to al Qaeda two years ago and is now emerging as a powerful force to rival IS in Syria, has seized several strategic towns in the northwestern province of Idlib. While it supplies water, electricity, and food to the local population, a school run by al Nusra is also grooming young boys to become the next generation of al Qaeda and preparing them for jihad.
VICE News also secures exclusive access to the frontlines of the battle for Abu Al-Duhur airport in Idlib, a major airbase held by Assad’s forces, besieged by al Nusra for two years. Aided by dust storms during the attack, the airport was the last remaining government stronghold in the region. Dozens of government soldiers were subsequently executed, according to the monitoring group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Democracynow.org - President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin held their first formal meeting in two years on Monday in New York to discuss Syria and Ukraine. During the 90-minute meeting, Obama and Putin agreed that their armed forces should hold talks to avoid coming into conflict in Syria, where fighting has killed more than 200,000 people and displaced millions. Both leaders addressed the United Nations Monday, with Putin defending Russia’s support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and Obama expressing willingness to work with Russia to resolve the crisis in Syria. According to reports, however, the United States ignored a Russian offer in 2012 to have Assad step aside at some point after peace talks had started between the regime and the opposition. And former Finnish president and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Martti Ahtisaari has said Western powers failed to seize on the 2012 proposal because the United States, Britain and France were convinced that the Syrian dictator was about to fall. Since then, tens of thousands more have been killed, and militants from ISIL have seized swaths of Syria. We talk about the crisis in Syria and the Obama-Putin meeting with Vijay Prashad, professor of international studies at Trinity College and columnist for the Indian magazine Frontline. He also is the author of several books, including "Arab Spring, Libyan Winter."
