The Alamo was built by Spanish missionaries around 1718.
This also when they added its basement.

It was originally named the Mission of San Antonio de Valero. It was later used to house Spanish soldiers who called it “El Alamo” because of the trees that surrounded it.
Alamo in Spanish translates to cottonwood trees. Military troops stayed there throughout the War for Mexico’s Independence from Spain.
In the summer of 1821, Stephen Austin
As in Stone Cold Steve Austin?!
No. This Stephen Austin arrived in San Antonio along with some 300 U.S. families that the Spanish government had allowed to settle in Texas. The migrations of US citizens outraged and annoyed many Mexicans who claimed the land was theirs.
Mexico wanted their land back.
By December 1835, the Texans had control of the Alamo and were sent reinforcements under the command of Colonel James Bowie...
NOT to be confused with David Bowie
Sam Houston, the commander of the Texas troops, believed Bowie should abandon the fort. Bowie disagrees and asks for reinforcements. Houston only sends 200, including the legendary Davy Crockett.
Finally, on February 23, General Santa…
Fine. that Santa (not that Santa). His name is Santa Anna. He was the General of Mexican Army. He arrives with over 1,5000 troops and sieges the fort. The Texans last over 13 day repealing over two assaults. However, on March 6, the third assault, was successful and the Mexican army broke through.
So, the Texans must have been on the naughty list...
Santa Anna was frustrated that the Texans would not surrender and were frankly, just wasting his time. He ordered his men to take no prisoners and executed every Texan in the fort.
Only a small amount of women and children were spared. They were sent to Sam Houston to let them know the Mexican Army was coming for them. It is estimated that the Mexican army lost around 600 troops and the Texans lost around 200.
A few weeks later, Sam Houston defeated General Santa Anna at San Jacinto, uttering the battle-cry that would come to be famous around the world:
“Taco Tuesday!”
“Remember the Alamo!”
Santa Anna is captured later in the war. He is caught hiding in a swamp wearing a disguise. The Texans force him to sign a treaty to end the war and allow Texas to be its own country - which its not now, no matter what it thinks.
But, the Mexican Government goes all Mission Impossible and says Santa Anna was never a general in their army and his treaty is therefore null and void.
The US have no idea what to do with this guy, so they keep him as a prisoner of war and eventually he is allowed to return to Mexico in 1837.
Fun Fact: The Alamo has housed five different countries: The Republic of Texas, The United States, Spain, Mexico, and the Confederate States of America.

The Texas Revolution or Texas War of Independence was an armed conflict between Mexico and settlers in the Texas portion of the Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas. The war lasted from October 2, 1835, to April 21, 1836. However, a war at sea in the Gulf of Mexico between Mexico and Texas would continue into the 1840s.
Animosity between the Mexican government and the settlers in Texas, including many settlers of Mexican ancestry, began with the Siete Leyes of 1835, when Mexican President and General Antonio López de Santa Anna abolished the federal Constitution of 1824 and proclaimed the more centralizing 1835 constitution in its place. The new laws were unpopular throughout Mexico, leading to secession movements and violence in several Mexican states.
War began in Texas on October 2, 1835, with the Battle of Gonzales. Early Texan Army successes at La Bahía and San Antonio (Battle of Goliad, Siege of Béxar) were soon met with crushing defeat at the same locations a few months later (Battle of Coleto, Battle of the Alamo). The war ended at the Battle of San Jacinto where General Sam Houston led the Texan Army to victory over a portion of the Mexican Army under Santa Anna, who was captured shortly after the battle. The conclusion of the war resulted in the creation of the Republic of Texas in 1836.

Texas (
i/ˈtɛksəs/) (Alibamu: Teksi ) is the second most populous and the second most extensive of the 50 United States, and the most extensive state of the 48 contiguous United States. The name, based on the Caddo word "Tejas" meaning "friends" or "allies", was applied by the Spanish to the Caddo themselves and to the region of their settlement in East Texas. Located in the South Central United States, Texas shares an international border with the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas to the south, and borders the US states of New Mexico to the west, Oklahoma to the north, Arkansas to the northeast, and Louisiana to the east. Texas has an area of 268,820 square miles (696,200 km2), and a growing population of 25.7 million residents.
During the Spanish colonial rule, the area was officially known as the Nuevo Reino de Filipinas: La Provincia de Texas. Antonio Margil de Jesús was known to be the first person to use the name in a letter to the Viceroy of Mexico in July 20, 1716. The name was not popularly used in daily speech but often appeared in legal documents until the end of the 1800s.

The Alamo was built by Spanish missionaries around 1718.

It was originally named the Mission of San Antonio de Valero. It was later used to house Spanish soldiers who called it “El Alamo” because of the trees that surrounded it.
Alamo in Spanish translates to cottonwood trees. Military troops stayed there throughout the War for Mexico’s Independence from Spain.
In the summer of 1821, Stephen Austin
As in Stone Cold Steve Austin?!
No. This Stephen Austin arrived in San Antonio along with some 300 U.S. families that the Spanish government had allowed to settle in Texas. The migrations of US citizens outraged and annoyed many Mexicans who claimed the land was theirs.
Mexico wanted their land back.
By December 1835, the Texans had control of the Alamo and were sent reinforcements under the command of Colonel James Bowie...
NOT to be confused with David Bowie
Sam Houston, the commander of the Texas troops, believed Bowie should abandon the fort. Bowie disagrees and asks for reinforcements. Houston only sends 200, including the legendary Davy Crockett.
Finally, on February 23, General Santa…
Fine. that Santa (not that Santa). His name is Santa Anna. He was the General of Mexican Army. He arrives with over 1,5000 troops and sieges the fort. The Texans last over 13 day repealing over two assaults. However, on March 6, the third assault, was successful and the Mexican army broke through.
So, the Texans must have been on the naughty list...
Santa Anna was frustrated that the Texans would not surrender and were frankly, just wasting his time. He ordered his men to take no prisoners and executed every Texan in the fort.
Only a small amount of women and children were spared. They were sent to Sam Houston to let them know the Mexican Army was coming for them. It is estimated that the Mexican army lost around 600 troops and the Texans lost around 200.
A few weeks later, Sam Houston defeated General Santa Anna at San Jacinto, uttering the battle-cry that would come to be famous around the world:
“Taco Tuesday!”
“Remember the Alamo!”
Santa Anna is captured later in the war. He is caught hiding in a swamp wearing a disguise. The Texans force him to sign a treaty to end the war and allow Texas to be its own country - which its not now, no matter what it thinks.
But, the Mexican Government goes all Mission Impossible and says Santa Anna was never a general in their army and his treaty is therefore null and void.
The US have no idea what to do with this guy, so they keep him as a prisoner of war and eventually he is allowed to return to Mexico in 1837.
Fun Fact: The Alamo has housed five different countries: The Republic of Texas, The United States, Spain, Mexico, and the Confederate States of America.
