Belfast and the Best of Northern Ireland
We start in bustling Belfast's City Hall and Ulster Museum, then head out to Northern Ireland's favorite resort: Portrush, along the Antrim Coast, where we taste-test Irish whiskey, scramble over some six-sided geology in the Giant's Causeway, drop in on a world-class golf course, and stomp our feet to some traditional music.

Pro-UK Unionist marching bands are due to parade across Belfast on Monday, July 13, as the Unionist community celebrates the anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne, when Protestant William of Orange defeated Catholic King James II in 1690. Festivities have been moved forward one day as July 12 falls on a Sunday this year.
The celebration has caused much controversy in Northern Ireland in recent years as the pro-Irish Nationalist community believes the bonfires and parades to be both provocative and contentious. The celebrations are often accompanied by clashes between Unionists and Nationalists at interfaces across the country.

Belfast, located on the northeast coast of Ireland, is an eclectic mixture of history and modernity. Scattered throughout the countryside you’ll find Iron Age forts, medieval castles, and more modern construction dating to the 20th century. Belfast got on the fast track to modernizing in the 19th century, when it became known as a shipbuilding mecca. Among the famous vessels built at Belfast through the decades are the RMS Titanic and its sister ships, Olympic and Britannic.
A great deal of Belfast’s modern identity stems from over three decades of political and religious strife. These issues have influenced much of the city’s public art, as a great number of murals and statues depict people and events from those times. A walk around this easily accessible city is a walk through that troubled past.
You’ll probably be hungry after exploring so much of the city’s history on your Belfast tour, so swing on down to one of the local pubs to drink a pint and share a meal with some of the locals. Just walk down the street and head into what venue catches your eye; the city is easily navigable on foot, and you never know what sort of delightful gallery, park, or restaurant you’re going to find just around the bend.

Welcome to Belfast Castle, a striking former home perched atop the rolling green hills of Cavehill County Park.
When you tour Belfast Castle, you’ll learn that the structure is actually the third castle to bear that moniker. The original Belfast Castle was constructed by the Normans in the 12th century; Sir Arthur Chichester built a replacement over its bones in the 1600s. That building burned down in 1708, and this version did not begin construction until 1811. It took over 60 years to finish the third incarnation of Belfast Castle, with the final bricks being laid in 1870.
Anyone sightseeing at Belfast Castle will notice its striking sandstone walls, which give the castle its distinctive reddish-brown hue. Meander through the quiet, peaceful gardens, and stop to snap some photos of downtown Belfast and the stunning Belfast Lough. Enjoy a meal at the restaurant, or just share a quiet cup of tea with some traveling companions.
After a day of tourism at Belfast Castle, head into Belfast proper for a pint at a pub, or wander through the art collections at Ulster Museum. Don’t forget to spend a few hours in the Botanic Gardens, which are sure to dazzle you.
What will you do at Belfast Castle?

Meet the locals as the Overlander travels around Ireland - Complete Program
See the beauty and hospitality of Ireland, through the eyes of it's people.
Stories include:
In Dublin I interviewed Niamh Ni Mhir who works for Hostel World,a local IT business that rode the Celtic Tiger to become the biggest Hostel booking website online Niamh explains how Ireland has changed since my last visit, in the early 1990 s and also tells us what it is she likes about living in Dublin.
I interview Kathleen Moran about the Kilkenny Craft Centre and how Kilkenny established itself as Ireland's craft capital.
In Belfast I interviewed Sean McKernan, a photographer who in 1983 set up a photo exhibition called Belfast Exposed, featuring a lot of images from the height of the troubles.
On the Aran Islands I interviewed Teresa Millane, an old style (Sean Nos) singer.
In Galway I interviewed actor Diarmuid de Faoite about the flourishing arts scene.
The small fishing Village of Dingle on the West Coast of Ireland is home to a friendly Dolphin called Fungi, who seems to prefer the company of humans to his own kind.
In Doolin I interviewed Banjo player, Kevin Griffin about why Doolin has become the traditional music capital of Ireland.
Sean now runs an multifunction arts centre called BX Arts.
Sean discusses how Belfast has changed since the 1997 ceasefire.
In Cork I try and trace my Irish ancestors (O'Shea), and look at the modern day immigration of Polish workers to Ireland.
For my final Irish story, I visit Cahersiveen where there are some Stone Forts that may well been the home of my Shea ancestors.

English/Nat
Three decades of sectarian violence in Belfast had traditionally served to keep the tourists away.
But now it seems the legacy of those very troubles may in fact be Northern Ireland's main attraction.
Tour guides are catering to tourist demands to see the sites that for so long dominated television news.
And some residents are even turning their homes into bed & breakfasts to cash in on the new tourist boom.
Shankhill Road - Belfast's Protestant area and domain of the Ulster Loyalist paramilitaries.
For nearly three decades, sectarian killings and violence deterred even the most adventurous tourist.
But since the ceasefire, the number of visitors venturing to Northern Ireland has increased.
Many seem to be keen to witness the scenes where much of the trouble that kept them away for so long took place.
Northern Ireland is renowned for its spectacular coastline, but some tourists are looking for something that only Belfast can offer.
George Grimley is one bus driver who operates tours to bring tourists to some of the city's infamous hot spots.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Well, Belfast unfortunately, having the history that it has, you'll find a lot of the tourists want to go into the areas that they've seen on their televisions over the years. So our aim is to bring the tourists into that area and give an unbiased view of both sides."
SUPER CAPTION: George Grimley, bus driver and tour operator
The twice-weekly bus tours of the Catholic and Protestant areas have become a must-see and are even recommended in travel guide books.
The tourists seem to enjoy the drive through some of Belfast's notorious areas.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"To actually drive down there and see the way these people live, it's just crazy living behind barbed wire and bricks."
SUPER CAPTION: David Edwards, Australian tourist
VOXPOP: (English)
"It's just chilling to think of all the people who have died here because of this conflict."
SUPER CAPTION: Jean Stewart, tourist from Denver, Colorado, U-S
Taxi drivers have also been cashing in, offering more individualised tours.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"You can tell it's a Protestant area. You'll see all the pavements are painted red, white and blue."
SUPER CAPTION: Michael Johnston, taxi driver and tour guide
The murals around Belfast are becoming something of an art form.
Even so, the tours are not for the faint hearted since the sites mark the scenes of atrocities still very real to local residents.
On the site of this wallpaper shop in the Shankhill Road stood a fish shop which was bombed by the I-R-A in 1993.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"That was one of the worst bomb attacks on the Shankhill Road, a lot of women and kids were killed. An I-R-A man left the bomb on the floor."
SUPER CAPTION: Michael Johnston, taxi driver and tour guide
The Catholic-Republican area is only a stone's throw from the Shankhill Road.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"These are the famous peace gates between the Falls and the Shankhill and they separate both sides from rioting and fighting."
SUPER CAPTION: Michael Johnston, taxi driver and tour guide
Milltown Cemetery gained notoriety when it was the scene of a deadly shooting in 1988.
Loyalist paramilitary Michael Stone attacked and killed three mourners attending the funerals of three I-R-A members shot by the British military in Gibraltar.
Within the cemetery are plots dedicated to fallen Republicans, including those killed in Gibraltar.
There is also a plaque commemorating the death of Bobby Sands and other inmates of the Maze Prison who died while on hunger strike protesting for political rights.

wn.com/Northern Ireland Tourists Returning To Belfast

The IRA has claimed responsible for planting the under-car booby trap bomb on the serving British soldier’s VW Transporter which was discovered after a security alert at Linden Gardens on the Cliftonville Road in north Belfast on Thursday.
In a statement to the Irish News which was accompanied by a codeword, The IRA claimed responsible for planting the under-car booby trap bomb on the serving British soldier’s car in north Belfast,
The IRA said it fell off the soldier’s VW Transporter and had made several attempts to kill the soldier who was based in Palace Barracks, Co Down.
The IRA said the device used new directional technology which is intended to send a blast in a specific direction, It included semtex and was to be triggered by a mercury tilt switch, It also had a timer attached which meant it could not be set off for 60 minutes after it was placed.
They also revealed that the device was attached to the British soldier’s car on three different occasions using magnets but fell off on each, and that on the third attempt a metal plate was attached to the bottom of the van using adhesive and a jack to help hold it in place.
Several hours later when the adhesive had hardened volunteers returned to the area, removed the jack, and attached the device using magnets despite this the device fell off for a third time, on two separate occasions an active service unit from the IRA Belfast brigade previously waited in the Linden Gardens area in a bid to shoot the soldier but he failed to appear.
It was later established that the soldier did not keep a regular routine the active service unit remained on stand by for ten consecutive nights but he again failed to show up, It was then decided to use a bomb to target the soldier, They would not have seen anything like this before, This is new technology, The components are similar but the make up of the unit is different and the end result would be significantly different, ie more directional. We only have to be lucky once in relation to all this.
The IRA statement ends.

Construction of Belfast, the first Royal Navy ship to be named after the capital city of Northern Ireland, and one of ten Town-class cruisers, began in December 1936. She was launched on St Patrick's Day, 17 March 1938. Commissioned in early August 1939 shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, Belfast was initially part of the British naval blockade against Germany. In November 1939 Belfast struck a German mine and spent more than two years undergoing extensive repairs. Belfast returned to action in November 1942 with improved firepower, radar equipment and armour. Belfast saw action escorting Arctic convoys to the Soviet Union during 1943, and in December 1943 played an important role in the Battle of North Cape, assisting in the destruction of the German warship Scharnhorst. In June 1944 Belfast took part in Operation Overlord supporting the Normandy landings. In June 1945 Belfast was redeployed to the Far East to join the British Pacific Fleet, arriving shortly before the end of the Second World War. Belfast saw further combat action in 1950–52 during the Korean War and underwent an extensive modernisation between 1956 and 1959. A number of further overseas commissions followed before Belfast entered reserve in 1963.
In 1967, efforts were initiated to avert Belfast 's expected scrapping and preserve her as a museum ship. A joint committee of the Imperial War Museum, the National Maritime Museum and the Ministry of Defence was established, and reported in June 1968 that preservation was practical. In 1971 the government decided against preservation, prompting the formation of the private HMS Belfast Trust to campaign for her preservation. The efforts of the Trust were successful, and the government transferred the ship to the Trust in July 1971. Brought to London, she was moored on the River Thames near Tower Bridge in the Pool of London.
