Hasidic Judaism from the Hebrew: חסידות (Sephardic pronunciation: IPA: [ħasiˈdut]; Ashkenazic pronunciation: IPA: [χaˈsidus]), meaning "piety" (or "loving-kindness"), is a branch of Orthodox Judaism that promotes spirituality through the popularization and internalization of Jewish mysticism as the fundamental aspect of the faith. It was founded in 18th-century Eastern Europe by Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov as a reaction against overly legalistic Judaism. His example began the characteristic veneration of leadership in Hasidism as embodiments and intercessors of Divinity for the followers.[1] Contrary to this, Hasidic teachings cherished the sincerity and concealed holiness of the unlettered common folk, and their equality with the scholarly elite. The emphasis on the Immanent Divine presence in everything gave new value to prayer and deeds of kindness, alongside rabbinical supremacy of study, and replaced historical mystical (kabbalistic) and ethical (musar) asceticism and admonishment with Simcha, encouragement, and daily fervor.[2]
Hasidism comprises part of contemporary Haredi Judaism,[citation needed] alongside the previous Talmudic Lithuanian-Yeshiva approach and the Sephardi and Mizrahi traditions. Its charismatic mysticism has inspired non-Orthodox Neo-Hasidic thinkers and influenced wider modern Jewish denominations, while its scholarly thought has interested contemporary academic study. Each Hasidic dynasty follows its own principles; thus, Hasidic Judaism is not one movement but a collection of separate groups with some commonality. There are approximately 30 larger Hasidic groups, and several hundred smaller groups. Though there is no one version of Hasidism, individual Hasidic groups often share with each other underlying philosophy, worship practices, dress (borrowed from local cultures), and songs (borrowed from local cultures).

Since Israel's inception, the Haredi — ultra-Orthodox adherents of Judaism —have been exempt from the country's military conscription laws. But their growing population, coupled with their high unemployment rate and dependence on state benefits, sparked outrage within the country's secular majority. After years of demanding that the Haredi share the responsibility of serving in the armed forces, the Israeli government passed an unprecedented law in March 2014 that requires Haredi men to serve in the military.
The decision resulted in major opposition from the Ultra Orthodox community, from violent protests to religious leaders demanding that no one should comply. VICE News travels to Israel to speak with hardline members and leaders of the Ultra Orthodox community as well as soldiers in the Netzah Yehuda, the IDF's Ultra Orthodox Battalion, to get their take on the government's decision.

NEW CITY - Federal investigators are seeking the person behind a threatening photograph sent to Rockland County Legislator Aron Wieder.
The photo sent shows an ISIS hostage about to be beheaded with Wieder's picture placed over the victim's face. The photo also shows Wieder’s name, Arabic writing and an ISIS flag.
A member of Rockland's Orthodox Jewish community, Wieder was appalled after seeing the picture, which was sent to his county office.
"This was clearly sent to intimidate – be it someone sympathetic to ISIS or someone directing hate towards the Orthodox community, towards me. It’s equally disturbing," said Wieder.
A spokesperson for the FBI confirmed that the agency is working with the Rockland County Sheriff's Office into what may be considered a terrorist threat.
The investigation has not yet determined the motive behind the letter.

WILLIAMSBURG, Brooklyn — The Hasidic community is one that typically shies away from on-camera interviews but Friday night there was concern along Driggs Avenue and beyond after a Hasidic man was hit in the head with a glass bottle in an apparent bias crime.
The attack happened about 1 a.m. Monday. A surveillance camera captured a picture of the culprit. No words were exchanged.
The police are investigating it as a possible hate crime.
“Is this going to be a lone wolf attack or will there be more attacks on Jews by more and more suspects?” Isaac Abraham, a community leader in Williamsburg, asked PIX 11 News.
Abraham is concerned because he says there have been several previous incidents targeting Orthodox Jews with paintballs starting in March.
The most recent target was a 62-year-old Hasidic man walking on Lee Avenue, also early Monday.
In the glass bottle attack, a cap believed to belong to the attacker was left behind and sent to an NYPD lab for DNA test, according to JPupdates.com.
The culprit is described as a 35-year-old man, 5 feet 9 inches tall and about 180 pounds, wearing a white shirt and dark-colored pants.
A $2,500 reward is being offered by Crime Stoppers. Anyone with information in the case is urged to call 800-577-TIPS.

This week on Up Close, memoirs from two men who blazed a trail by being different from what many expected of them.
Congressman Barney Frank was the first member of Congress to voluntarily come out as gay, and the first to marry someone of the same sex while in office. He also developed a reputation as a confrontational speaker and legislator, who fought for what he believed in. We discuss his book, "Frank: A Life in Politics From the Great Society to Same-Sex Marriage."
And then, we see a lot of writing these days from ultra-Orthodox Jews who are leaving or who have left their communities and occasionally their families. But one man started that genre under the blog name "Hasidic Rebel." He's now got a memoir out, and Shulem Deen stopped by to discuss "All Who Go Do Not Return."

Shulem Deen is a former Hasidic Jew. Since leaving that world, he’s founded the website Unpious which is a voice for other ultra-Orthodox Jews who may be rethinking their faith. His new memoir is called All Who Go Do Not Return.
We spoke with Shulem about the hypocrisy of Hasidic Jews regarding modern technology, how that community reacted to an episode of This American Life focusing on them, and how America Online became his gateway to the outside world.
Notes:
Shulem was featured in a recent episode of the podcast Reply All.
He is also on the Board of Directors for an organization called Footsteps, which helps Orthodox Jews leave the fold.

Hasidic tales are often read as charming, timeless expressions of Jewish spirituality. The best-known versions of these stories, however, have been rewritten for audiences outside traditional Judaism and few works have explored Hasidic tales as they were created by Hasidic Jews. In "Imagining Holiness", Justin Lewis offers a radical reappraisal of how we think of Hasidic tales, calling into question received notions of authenticity. He focuses his study on the neglected Hasidic literature of the early twentieth century - primarily the work of Israel Berger and Abraham Hayim Michelson - and the literary and historical dynamics of its emergence, posing questions about its place in Hasidic society, the attitude of the Hasidim towards this literature, and orality in Hasidic tradition as manifested in these Hasidic books. Berger and Michelson wrote in the decade before the First World War, a time of loss and decline for Hasidism. Their books resisted modernity and positioned Hasidism as authentic Judaism but also reflected modern literary trends, expressed tensions within Hasidism itself, and depicted struggles between the soul and body. "Imagining Holiness" - a timely study, given the growing influence of Hasidism - will help readers understand the inner motivations of this religious culture at an important moment in its history.

BROOKLYN - The NYPD is now offering a $2,500 reward leading to an arrest in connection with recent suspected hate crimes in Williamsburg.
One of the most recent incidents happened June 29 at the corner of Rodney Street and Lee Avenue. Surveillance video from the scene appears to show two Jewish men in front of a store when paintballs are shot at them, hitting an awning.
The shop's owner says it happened at around 1:45 a.m. No one was hurt, but the paintball left a dent in front of the store.
Another incident occurred a few minutes later, about a half-mile away at the corner of Lee Avenue and Rutledge Street. A 62-year-old man was walking when a paintball struck his left shoulder.
Police say similar incidents took place in Williamsburg in March, but they have not confirmed whether they are connected.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.

Lawsuit Against (Kaparot) Slaughter of Chickens for Hasidic Jewish Ritual in New York City

There are claims of animal abuse in Brooklyn and now a group of residents is trying to stop the systematic and bloody slaughter of chickens right in the streets.
But they're facing an obstacle: this is an annual religious ritual practiced by Hasidic Jews.
The annual ritual is known as "Kaporos" is when many ultra-orthodox Jews seek to absolve themselves of sin by slaughtering chickens.
But critics say what was once a discrete, private religious ceremony has become a grotesque public spectacle.
An estimated 50,000 chickens are slaughtered every year, many of them on public streets in Williamsburg, Crown Heights, and Borough Park.
"People are visibly upset by it, the stench is overpowering, right in front of women and children and the general public the slaughterer cuts the neck of the bird," said Rina Deych, a Borough Park resident.
Rina Deych, who is Jewish, is one of dozens of residents filing a lawsuit to stop the annual ritual. It is conducted in September, in the days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
"There's health codes that are being broken, there's New York State Agriculture and Markets sections of the laws that are being broken, there are street activity permits that are not being adhered to, there is animal cruelty laws that are being violated, it's like a free-for-all," said Nora Marino, the plaintiffs' attorney
Lisa Ranz says the ritual is entirely unregulated by any city agency.
"And they say it does not require a permit because it's a religious event and that is incorrect," Ranz said.
But supporters of the ritual insist the claims are exaggerated.
"I have never seen what they describe, but is there a situation where someone does it the wrong way, just like any other practice that people don't do it the right way, that of course is unacceptable, but I have no idea what these people are talking about," said Assemblyman Dov Hikind, (D) Brooklyn.
There is no comment from the city's Law Department, which is said to be reviewing the lawsuit.
But any attempt to ban the ritual is certain to be challenged on Constitutional grounds.

A police officer who the NYPD says was its first Hasidic Jewish officer when he joined the department in 2006 was promoted to sergeant on Friday. NY1's Dean Meminger filed the following report.
Joel Witriol had a big smile on his big day. The officer was promoted to the rank of sergeant on Friday.
"It's a good job. Just take it," Witriol said.
That's what he did back in 2006. At that point, the New York City Police Department says he was the first Hasidic Jewish officer, a trailblazer for his community.
"I was a little surprised about it, but it's a good thing, hopefully, to have more followers, bringing the community into it," Witriol said.
The department has plenty of officers who are Jewish, but just a handful are members of the Hasidic community. That includes Witriol's brother, who didn't want to appear on camera.
Their parents are proud their sons are a part of the NYPD family, although they know it is a dangerous job.
"If they are going to be late, they let us know because my wife is a very nervous lady. She just wants to make sure they come home safe," said Louis Witriol, their father. "It's a little work, but it's OK."
During his work as a police officer with the transit bureau in Brooklyn, Joel Witriol sometimes worked undercover. Well, sort of. He dressed in his religious clothing to catch fare-beaters and people committing other crimes.
"Every day is a different day," he said. "Different people, different things happening. Getting involved with a lot of stuff you never thought you were going to get involved."
Joel Witriol started as an auxiliary officer in 2003 and said he realized joining the police department full-time would change his life for the better. He said he hasn't any issues with the NYPD because of his religion.
During official ceremonies, he wears his payess side curls tucked behind his ears, which he proudly did as he was promoted to sergeant. He's now headed to work at the 13th Precinct in Manhattan.

From Hasidic punk rockers, Yiddish street performers, African-American Jewish activists, this film covers politics, art, fashion, and religion like you have never seen before. Punk Jews explores a rising trend among committed Jews who are sincerely asking and expressing what it really means to be Jewish in the 21st century while smashing stereotypes. The term ‘punk’ is usually used to describe a group of singers with Mohawks and safety pins in their ears but the true essence of punk are people that don’t conform to the established expectations, who express themselves freely regardless of the opinions of others. This documentary is about ‘punk’ Jews.
Like most religious cultures, Judaism is struggling to bridge the gap between tradition and the modern world. There seem to be many different contradictory interpretations of Jewish traditions and many wrestle to find the answers to common questions regarding the stereotypes, rules, and regulations. This film takes us to New York City where there’s a new movement of young Jewish people expressing Judaism in unconventional ways. They are defying the norm at any cost as they embrace their Jewish identity in their own rediscovered ways.

In this lecture/discussion video from my Spring 2014 Religion in America class at Marist college, we explore the themes discussed in the textbook for the class (America's Religions: From Their Origins to the Twenty-first Century 3rd. ed., by Peter Williams), focusing on Chapter 46, "Traditions and Structures in the American Jewish Community" and Chapter 47, "Jewish Identity and Jewish Culture in 20th Century America"
Having discussed Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox Judaism as denominations, we now bring in the smaller groups of Reconstructionist Judaism and Hasidic Judaism, discussing the distinctive beliefs, practices, and emphases of both of these. We then examine some important demographic trends in American Judaism which, if continued, will change the balance between these denominations significantly, as numbers of Reconstructionist,, Reform, and Conservative Jews decline and numbers of Hasidic and other Orthodox Jews increase.
Then we turn to Jewish involvement and contributions in American culture in the 20th century, beginning from the problematic situation many Jews found themselves in, where they were effectively barred from participation in many organizations, colleges, and firms. The response was, on the one hand, to create a parallel set of Jewish organizations and industries, and on the other hand, to move into areas of new development, where these barriers did not exist, like the motion picture industry. We finish by discussing Jewish contributions in literature, intellectual life, and politics in America.
Since videos discussing religion tend to get a number of polemical, poorly informed, and off-topic comments, I've set comments to require review and approval before they'll be publicly posted.

Once exclusively reserved for study by ultra-religious male scholars of Judaism, Kabbalah has recently become known as a multi-million dollar, celebrity-endorsed phenomenon. SECRETS OF KABBALAH strips away the hype and demystifies the writings that have been studied by Jewish scholars for thousands of years. Is the Kabbalah of the stars the same Kabbalah that Jewish scholars have studied for generations? Even as more and more people are seen wearing the red string bracelets associated with Kabbalah, the original teachings behind this seemingly new fad are in fact understood by precious few.
Kabbalah (Hebrew: קַבָּלָה, literally "receiving/tradition"; also transliterated Cabala, Qabbālâ etc.; different transliterations now tend to denote alternative traditions) is an esoteric method, discipline, and school of thought that originated in Judaism. A traditional Kabbalist in Judaism is called a Mekubal (Hebrew: מְקוּבָל).
Kabbalah's definition varies according to the tradition and aims of those following it,[2] from its religious origin as an integral part of Judaism, to its later Christian, New Age, and Occultist syncretic adaptations. Kabbalah is a set of esoteric teachings meant to explain the relationship between an unchanging, eternal, and mysterious Ein Sof (no end) and the mortal and finite universe (God's creation). While it is heavily used by some denominations, it is not a religious denomination in itself. It forms the foundations of mystical religious interpretation. Kabbalah seeks to define the nature of the universe and the human being, the nature and purpose of existence, and various other ontological questions. It also presents methods to aid understanding of these concepts and thereby attain spiritual realisation.
Kabbalah originally developed entirely within the realm of Jewish thought, and kabbalists often use classical Jewish sources to explain and demonstrate its esoteric teachings. These teachings are held by followers in Judaism to define the inner meaning of both the Hebrew Bible and traditional Rabbinic literature and their formerly concealed transmitted dimension, as well as to explain the significance of Jewish religious observances.
Traditional practitioners believe its earliest origins pre-date world religions, forming the primordial blueprint for Creation's philosophies, religions, sciences, arts, and political systems. Historically, Kabbalah emerged, after earlier forms of Jewish mysticism, in 12th- to 13th-century Southern France and Spain, becoming reinterpreted in the Jewish mystical renaissance of 16th-century Ottoman Palestine. It was popularised in the form of Hasidic Judaism from the 18th century onwards. Twentieth-century interest in Kabbalah has inspired cross-denominational Jewish renewal and contributed to wider non-Jewish contemporary spirituality, as well as engaging its flourishing emergence and historical re-emphasis through newly established academic investigation.
