Over two million Poles now live abroad. Few are planning to return, while the numbers joining them are growing. The principal reasons for emigration are connected to Poland’s lower wages. The most popular destinations are Germany, Britain, Scandinavia, the Netherlands and the US. From blue collar to white collar, Poland is suffering a significant labor drain - despite having a booming economy. The mass emigration is also taking its toll on the older generation; traditionally sons and daughters would take care of their parents - a tradition that is waning.

Poland was the only EU country whose economy continued to grow uninterrupted through the recent financial crisis. Whilst other countries have hit disaster, it has developed into a vibrant European metropolis.
In the university town of Krakow, young students are optimistic about their future in Poland."Warsaw is a truly fantastic place for business and the people are hungry for success". Whilst the youth in other European countries were rioting in the streets, Polish students were partying. They might be looking beyond the borders at the "new horizons" offered by the EU, yet they remain patriotic:"Poland has given me my education for free. I must return this investment". With the economy steadily growing, a prosperous nation of entrepreneurs is emerging."Young people want to succeed in business; they really fight for it. This is because for a long time this hasn't been possible for us Poles."

The leader of Poland's new, pro-business political movement says that a strong economy in Poland would breathe new energy into the European Union and help it compete on the global level.
Ryszard Petru spoke to The Associated Press Friday after a news conference in which he sought online donations from supporters as a novel, transparent way of financing politics.
His movement, ModernPl Association, is hoping for some 20 percent of the votes in the fall general elections. Poland's political scene seems poised for a reshuffle, following the surprise win of opposition candidate Andrzej Duda in May's presidential election.

Polish/Nat
Poland's shipyards have responded very differently to the challenges of a free market economy.
In the north western city of Stettin, the most successful shipyard in Europe, employs more than 7-thousand people and produces 22 ships a year.
The situation is very different in the Gdansk shipyard, where Polish democracy was born - it faces closure.
APTV presents the situation in two shipyards in Poland as they adjust to the change from a Communist to a free market system.
It was in Poland's shipyards in Stettin, Gdansk and Gdynia that the solidarity movement was born in the 1980s.
The one in Stettin is held up as a model of how a shipyard should be run.
Workers here earn twice the average Polish wage. And the shipyard runs two training schools for apprentices.
There is very little overtime and employees only have to work one Saturday in every four, and the Stettin shipbuilders have never gone on strike.
The process which saw the transformation of the yard from an inefficient communist dinosaur to one recording only a small loss, was not a painless one.
SOUNDBITE: (Polish)
"In the first stage of restructuring it was necessary to lay off a certain number of workers. This was a gradual process, it was not done abruptly, that would have been too costly."
SUPER CAPTION: Krzysztof Piotrowski, Managing Director, Stettin Shipyards
Over 5,000 jobs have been lost at the yard since 1989.
But ships built here are exported throughout the world.
SOUNDBITE: (Polish)
"And the other shipyards, why are they unable, or unwilling to do it? Simply because they relied on political solutions, on bonuses on historical merits. This was unacceptable for us, because we did not have a strong sponsor who could take care of us, which was better for us in the long run."
SUPER CAPTION: Krzysztof Piotrowski, Managing director Stettin Shipyard
But in the Gdansk shipyard, the cradle of the solidarity movement, the situation is very different.
Whereas other yards used government subsidies to invest in new machinery and restructure their organisation, the Gdansk yard is owned 60 per cent by the government and 40 per cent by the unions.
It resisted any job losses, using money to subsidize prices and therefore to guarantee jobs.
SOUNDBITE: (Polish)
"There are 7,300 people working here, we want to reduce the number to 5,300. We will reduce the number of people working in management, and have the majority of workers involved directly in production."
SUPER CAPTION: Ryszard Goluch, Manager Gdansk shipyards
Unhappy with the management's plans for reconstruction, the post Communist government which replaced Walesa advertised in international newspapers for a buyer to take over its share in the yards.
SOUNDBITE: (Polish)
"We would accept any willing investor and will talk and negotiate with each and every one."
SUPER CAPTION: Ryszard Goluch, Manager Gdansk Shipyards
Investors will have to deal with 130 (m) million U-S dollar worth of debt. The unions have relinquished their right to strike in order to save the yard. The next few weeks will be crucial for the workers in Gdansk.

In February 2015, fDi Magazine will publish its inaugural Polish Cities of the Future ranking for 2015/16.
“Polish cities have proven their attractiveness for foreign direct investment and are competitive on not just a regional but also a global scale," says Courtney Fingar, Editor-in-Chief, fDi Magazine, the Financial Times Group. “Now it is time to see how they measure up against each other and what the respective merits of Poland’s many thriving cities are,” she adds.
In order to analyse the most recent FDI promotion activities of cities, we are inviting local, regional and national levels of investment promotion agencies, economic development units, governments, governors and mayors to supply additional information regarding their current investment promotion activities in order to help enhance their city’s competitiveness in the rankings.
Results will be published in the February/March 2015 issue of fDi Magazine, which will have special distribution at the MIPIM international property event in Cannes in March 2015.
The latest European cities and regions of the future ranking featured Wroclaw, Katowice and Poznan in the Top 10 Eastern European Cities.
