The Indian National Congress (abbreviated INC, and commonly known as the Congress) is one of the two major political parties in India, the other being the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). It is the largest and one of the oldest democratic political parties in the world. The party's modern liberal platform is largely considered center-left in the Indian political spectrum. Founded in 1885 by members of the occultist movement Theosophical Society—Allan Octavian Hume, Dadabhai Naoroji, Dinshaw Wacha, Womesh Chandra Bonnerjee, Surendranath Banerjee, Monomohun Ghose, Mahadev Govind Ranade and William Wedderburn—the Indian National Congress became the leader of the Indian Independence Movement, with over 15 million members and over 70 million participants in its struggle against British rule in India. After independence in 1947, it became the nation's dominant political party, led by the Nehru-Gandhi family for the most part; major challenges for party leadership have only recently formed.
In the 2009 general elections, the Congress emerged as the single largest party in the Lok Sabha, with 205 of its candidates getting elected to the 543-member house. Consequently it, along with a coalition of allies called the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), was able to gain a majority and form the government.

Youth suicide is when a young person deliberately ends his or her own life. Rates of attempted and completed youth suicide in Western societies are high. For example, in Australia suicide is second only to motor vehicle accidents as the leading cause of death for people aged 15–24, and according to the National Institute for Mental Health, suicide is the third leading cause of death among teens in the United States. It is a much bigger problem in other countries: in India, one-third of suicides are young people 15–29. In 2002, 154,000 suicides were recorded in India.
According to research carried out by the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian in 2007, 39% of all youth suicides are completed by young people who have lost someone of influence or significance to them to suicide. The Commission terms this suicide contagion and makes several recommendations as to the importance of safe guarding young people and communities from suicide contagion.
In 2011 the Australian Federal Parliament Standing Committee for Health and Ageing Inquiry into Youth Suicide met in a round table forum with young representatives from three organisations at the forefront of preventing youth suicide, including Sunnykids, Inspire, and Boys Town. The Standing Committee has since released a discussion paper highlighting the findings of their inquiry and will seek to make final recommendations on the most effective means for reducing youth suicide at the conclusion of their inquiry.

Sunny Leone (born May 13, 1981) is an Indo-Canadian pornographic actress, actress, businesswoman and model of dual Canadian/American nationality. She was named Penthouse Pet of the Year in 2003 and was a contract star for Vivid Entertainment. Named by Maxim as one of the 12 top porn stars in 2010, she has also played roles in independent mainstream films and television shows.
Leone was born in Sarnia, Ontario to Sikh Punjabi parents from India. Her father was born in Tibet and raised in Delhi, while her mother (who died in 2008) was from a small town named Nahan in Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh. As a young girl, she was very athletic and played street hockey with the boys, enjoyed ice skating on a nearby frozen lake and drinking hot chocolate in front of a fire after playing in the snow all day.
Though she was raised as a Sikh, her parents enrolled her in a Catholic school, as it was felt to be unsafe for her to go to public school. There she had her first kiss at 11, lost her virginity to a basketball player at another school at 16, and discovered that she was bisexual at 18. When she was 13, her family moved to Fort Gratiot, Michigan, then to Lake Forest, California a year later, fulfilling her grandparents' dream that the family be together in one place. She graduated from high school in 1999 and enrolled in college.

NEW DELHI, AUGUST 17:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s criticism of the UPA regime while on a visit to the UAE on Monday has once again incited sharp criticism from the Congress on Monday.
Modi lamented the “lethargy” of his predecessor governments, provoking the Congress, which maintained that insulting the Opposition on foreign soil has become routine for the Prime Minister.
Modi, while addressing business leaders of the UAE in Masdar City, said his government had “legacy problems” and that his immediate priority would be to kick-start projects which were stalled by the “indecisiveness and lethargy” of the past governments.
“I have got some problems in legacy. I cannot take only the good points and leave aside the problems... Some things were stalled due to the indecisiveness and lethargy of the governments (in the past)... It is my priority to kick-start those things,” he said.
Addressing a press conference at the Congress headquarters, party spokesperson RPN Singh said: “Whenever the PM goes abroad, he takes pot shots at his own country, by shaming previous governments.”
“There is a pattern – the PM humiliated previous governments in Germany, Canada, Japan, China and now, he has done it in the UAE,” he said.
“He has done it again,” said former Commerce Minister Anand Sharma. Sharma said the PM “has inherited an India that he should be proud of”. “He should be cautious of the dignity of his office.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s criticism of the UPA regime while on a visit to the UAE on Monday has once again incited sharp criticism from the Congress on Monday.
Modi lamented the “lethargy” of his predecessor governments, provoking the Congress, which maintained that insulting the Opposition on foreign soil has become routine for the Prime Minister.
Modi, while addressing business leaders of the UAE in Masdar City, said his government had “legacy problems” and that his immediate priority would be to kick-start projects which were stalled by the “indecisiveness and lethargy” of the past governments.
“I have got some problems in legacy. I cannot take only the good points and leave aside the problems... Some things were stalled due to the indecisiveness and lethargy of the governments (in the past)... It is my priority to kick-start those things,” he said.
Addressing a press conference at the Congress headquarters, party spokesperson RPN Singh said: “Whenever the PM goes abroad, he takes pot shots at his own country, by shaming previous governments.”
“There is a pattern – the PM humiliated previous governments in Germany, Canada, Japan, China and now, he has done it in the UAE,” he said.
“He has done it again,” said former Commerce Minister Anand Sharma. Sharma said the PM “has inherited an India that he should be proud of”. “He should be cautious of the dignity of his office.”

A protest called by Congress in Lucknow led to violent scenes amidst a lathicharge by police and stone -pelting by the workers of the opposition party, who claimed that their senior leaders were hurt in the police action.
Congress said that its state unit president Nirmal Khatri and the AICC in-charge of state affairs, Madhusudan Mistry, were among those injured in the lathicharge near Laxman Mela grounds in the state capital.
The Congress workers wanted to march towards the Uttar Pradesh Assembly in protest over issues like the poor law and order situation and corruption in the Samajwadi Party-ruled state.
"Several Congress workers and leaders, like UPCC president Nirmal Khatri, AICC in-charge of state affairs Madhusudan Mistry, Sanjay Singh, among others, were injured in police's lathicharge to foil the programme to gherao the Assembly over various problems confronting the state," said Congress Legislature Party leader, Pradip Mathur.
Senior Congress leaders like Sriprakash Jaiswal, Raj Babbar, Rita Bahuguna Joshi, Pramod Tewari and all party MLAs took part in the protest, he said, adding that doctors have been summoned and medical aid being provided to those injured.
The protesters were prevented by policemen, who were deployed in large numbers, from moving towards the state Assembly and were later taken to the Police Lines.
Meanwhile, eyewitnesses said that the Congress workers retaliated to the police action by engaging in brick-batting.
They claimed that some scribes and photo-journalists, too, were injured during the incident.
Congress had asked party workers to gather at the Mela grounds before commencing the march towards the Assembly against the dismal law and order situation, corruption, atrocities on Dalits and women, communal tension, power scarcity, in UP, among others.

Mumbai: Days after the state government laid down dos and don'ts for dahi handi organizers, the Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) spoke out against the policy. The state government recently declared dahi handi an 'adventure sport' and lifted restrictions on the height limit for human pyramids. Congress observes a fast
Congress observes fast demanding prohibition
Congress cadres observing a fast in Ramanathapuram on Friday.
Congress cadres observed a day’s fast in Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga districts demanding total prohibition in the State.
As part of the State-wide agitation, party men, led by local office-bearers, observed the fast at 11 places in Ramanathapuram district.
At the district headquarters, town president Gopi led the fast. District president ‘Goodluck’ Rajendran addressed party men visiting all the fasting venues and ended the fast here, while Sivagana district president P Sathyamurthy led the fast at Aranmanai Vaasal.
They condemned the State government for maintaining a stoic silence despite a public outcry demanding prohibition.
The government could no longer remain silent when almost all the opposition parties and people of all walks of life started fighting for the imposition of prohibition, they also said.
The agitations received spontaneous response from women folk, who were directly affected by the selling of liquor. Their husbands, who were the sole breadwinners in most of the families, spent their entire earnings or major portion for buying liquor, they said.
Expressing concern that even school students had started taking liquor, they said it was high time the State government revised its prohibition policy.
In stages
If it was not possible to impose prohibition at one go, the government should close down liquor shops in stages, they said.
Prohibition: Congress observes a fast
An estimated 555 Congress activists observed a fast at 11 locations in the district on Friday demanding that prohibition be imposed in the State.
The party’s urban unit president E.P. Ravi participated in the fast organised at Kalaimadu Statue Junction in the city. Ninety members, including 15 women, took part.
Similar fasts were observed at Modakurichi, Gobi, Nambiyur, Bhavani, Ammapettai, Sathy, Puliampatti, Bangalapudur, and Perundurai.
Salem
A day-long fast was observed near the District Collectorate here on Friday. ‘Kuttapatti’ R. Narayanan, a former MLA, and Salem Urban district president S.B. Meganathan, said that consumption of liquor was the main reason for the rise in crimes in the State.
They said that the government is keen on fixing targets and increasing the sale at the outlets across the district rather than worrying about the health of citizens.
Speakers said that it was the right time to implement prohibition as younger generations were losing direction in life.
“Tasmac outlets are the biggest threat to society,” they added. The party observed a fast in Attur, Mettur, Omalur, Sankari too.
The Congress observed a fast in Namakkal, Tiruchengode and other places in the district.

Hannah Sell opens the session on Britain: An upswell of anger
Branch delegates and visitors gathered at 2015 Socialist Party congress to discuss and debate the key political developments internationally and in Britain, and to map out the party's tasks over the next 12 months.
With all the main parties committed to pursuing savage austerity cuts in the new parliament, and the working class and middle classes facing a cost of living crisis for another five years, Hannah Sell, the Socialist Party's deputy general secretary, asked: 'Will Greece come to Britain?'
Hannah told delegates that beneath a seemingly calm political landscape in Britain, a volcanic upswell of anger over public service cuts, job losses, low wages, insecure employment and widening inequality, is likely to explode whichever party - or more likely combination of parties - forms the next government.
This prospect hasn't been lost on the super-rich, many of who can see the 'pitchforks' coming and are hastily buying up offshore island bolt holes!
How is it then that the 1%, the wealthy capitalist class, continues to escape the wrath of the population? Hannah explained that the absence of a generalised fightback by workers is down to the baleful role of the right wing trade union leaders.
Notwithstanding this road block to struggle, a number of coordinated strikes - the NHS pay campaign and the London busworkers' dispute - have recently broken out, giving a glimpse of widespread battles that could develop in the next year.
Struggles against austerity can also develop in other arenas - as expressed by many yes voters in last September's independence referendum in Scotland.
Pressing social issues such as the housing crisis especially in the large cities can also act as an outlet; witness the recent thousands-strong demos in London against sky high private rents, the New Era tenants victorious struggle against a rogue landlord, and the anti-eviction protests of the Focus E15 mums.
No political voice
The absence of a sizeable left political voice to represent the working class is also an obstacle to struggle but this hasn't stopped the fracturing of the traditional party political system in Britain. And as the rapid development of Syriza in Greece and Podemos in Spain shows, new left-leaning political formations can develop mass support very quickly.
Labour is repelling potential electoral support by its slavish adherence to capitalist austerity measures. Yet many trade union leaders continue to spout the mantra: 'Labour is the only show in town'.
Documents and motions outlining these perspectives and tasks were voted on, and a new national committee of the party was elected.

Congress attacks Modi for swipe at UPA abroad
PM told a business gathering in Abu Dhabi that his govt is dealing with ‘legacy problems’ NEW DELHI, AUGUST 17: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s criticism of the UPA regime while on a visit to the UAE on Monday has once again incited sharp criticism from the Congress on Monday. Modi lamented the “lethargy” of his predecessor governments, provoking the Congress, which maintained that insulting the Opposition on foreign soil has become routine for the Prime Minister. Modi, while addressing business leaders of the UAE in Masdar City, said his government had “legacy problems” and that his immediate priority would be to kick-start projects which were stalled by the “indecisiveness and lethargy” of the past governments. “I have got some problems in legacy. I cannot take only the good points and leave aside the problems... Some things were stalled due to the indecisiveness and lethargy of the governments (in the past)... It is my priority to kick-start those things,” he said. Addressing a press conference at the Congress headquarters, party spokesperson RPN Singh said: “Whenever the PM goes abroad, he takes pot shots at his own country, by shaming previous governments.” “There is a pattern – the PM humiliated previous governments in Germany, Canada, Japan, China and now, he has done it in the UAE,” he said. “He has done it again,” said former Commerce Minister Anand Sharma. Sharma said the PM “has inherited an India that he should be proud of”. “He should be cautious of the dignity of his office.” Another Congress spokesman Meem Afzal said it was not proper for Modi to rake up domestic politics abroad despite repeated uproar by the Opposition for his earlier such actions. “The Prime Minister should have maintained dignity of the high office he holds. There is no problem if he targets previous governments when he is in the country. But he should have refrained from doing so on foreign soil,” he said. Modi had earlier attacked Congress and its previous governments during trips to China and Canada, for which he was slammed by the Opposition party. In Canada, Modi had said in a meeting with the Indian diaspora that, “Jinko gandagi karni thi, gandagi kar ke chale gaye. Hum safai kar ke jayenge. (Whoever had to create a mess, have done their job. Our job is to clean it up)” In the same meeting, he added: “India will provide the workforce to power global growth. Our mission is ‘skill India’ not ‘scam India’.” Addressing Indians in Seoul in May, the PM had said: “There was a time when people used to ask themselves – what sin did I commit in my previous birth that I was born in India? Is this what you call a country and a government? Let us leave and go somewhere else. And people did leave. Congress said that its state unit president Nirmal Khatri and the AICC in-charge of state affairs, Madhusudan Mistry, were among those injured in the lathicharge near Laxman Mela grounds in the state capital. The Congress workers wanted to march towards the Uttar Pradesh Assembly in protest over issues like the poor law and order situation and corruption in the Samajwadi Party-ruled state. "Several Congress workers and leaders, like UPCC president Nirmal Khatri, AICC in-charge of state affairs Madhusudan Mistry, Sanjay Singh, among others, were injured in police's lathicharge to foil the programme to gherao the Assembly over various problems confronting the state," said Congress Legislature Party leader, Pradip Mathur. Senior Congress leaders like Sriprakash Jaiswal, Raj Babbar, Rita Bahuguna Joshi, Pramod Tewari and all party MLAs took part in the protest, he said, adding that doctors have been summoned and medical aid being provided to those injured. The protesters were prevented by policemen, who were deployed in large numbers, from moving towards the state Assembly and were later taken to the Police Lines. Meanwhile, eyewitnesses said that the Congress workers retaliated to the police action by engaging in brick-batting. They claimed that some scribes and photo-journalists, too, were injured during the incident. Congress had asked party workers to gather at the Mela grounds before commencing the march towards the Assembly against the dismal law and order situation, corruption, atrocities on Dalits and women, communal tension, power scarcity, in UP, among others.- published: 17 Aug 2015
