The Governor-General of India (or, from 1858 to 1947, the Viceroy and Governor-General of India (commonly shortened to Viceroy of India)) was originally the head of the British administration in India and, later, after Pakistani and Indian independence in 1947, the representative of the Indian monarch and head of state. The office was created in 1773, with the title of Governor-General of the Presidency of Fort William. The officer had direct control only over Fort William, but supervised other British East India Company officials in India. Complete authority over all of British India was granted in 1833, and the official became known as the Governor-General of India. In 1858, the territories of the East India Company came under the direct control of the British government; see British Raj. The governor-general (now also the viceroy) headed the central government of India, which administered the provinces of British India, including the Punjab, Bengal, Bombay, Madras, the United Provinces, and others. However, much of India was not ruled directly by the British government; outside the provinces of British India, there were hundreds of nominally sovereign princely states or "native states", whose relationship was not with the British government, but directly with the monarch. To reflect the governor-general's role as the representative of the monarch to the feudal rulers of the princely states, from 1858 the term Viceroy and Governor-General of India (known in short as the Viceroy of India) was applied to him. Moving the Governor General's Railway Car "Alexandra" December 2006

The "Alexandra" was built in 1905 by Rhodes Curry at Amherst, Nova Scotia for Governor General Lord Earl Grey. It later became the traveling home of Prime Ministers Laurier, Borden, Meighan and King. The car has been described as the most elegant car ever built in the Amherst plant. It had an interior of selected St. Jago mahogany, and a wooden exterior with "GOVERNOR GENERAL'S CAR" on the letterboard. The "Alexandra", which had been owned by the Town of Amherst, and was destined for either disposal or the scrapper's torch, was purchased by the Nova Scotia Railway Heritage Society in September 2006 and relocated to the Train Station Inn, Tatamogouche, on 20 December 2006, thanks to an agreement reached by the society and inn owner James LeFresne. The car joins LeFresne's collection of veteran rolling stock that he has converted into a world-renowned hotel.

Governor General David Johnston is The Queen’s representative in Canada and exercises the duties of Head of State. Since being sworn in as Canada’s 28th Governor General in October 2010, he has traveled on behalf of Canada to Europe, India, China, Brazil, and the United States as a leading speaker on education, innovation and trade. David Johnston began his professional career as an assistant professor in the Faculty of Law at Queen’s University in 1966, joining the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Law in 1968. He became dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Western Ontario in 1974. In 1979, he was named principal and vice-chancellor of McGill University, and in July 1994, he returned to teaching as a full-time professor in the McGill Faculty of Law. In June 1999, he became the fifth president of the University of Waterloo, Canada’s most innovative university recognized for advanced research and teaching in science, engineering and mathematics. His academic specializations include securities regulation, information technology and corporate law. Mr. Johnston holds an LL.B. from Queen’s University (1966); an LL.B. from the University of Cambridge (1965); and an AB from Harvard University (1963). While at Harvard, he was twice selected for the All-American hockey team and was named to Harvard’s Athletic Hall of Fame. He was the first non-American to chair Harvard’s Board of Overseers. He is the author or co-author of 24 books including new editions, holds honorary doctorates from over 20 universities and is a Companion of the Order of Canada. Non-partisan and apolitical, the Governor General presides over the swearing-in of the Prime Minister of Canada, the Chief Justice of Canada and cabinet ministers; summons, prorogues and dissolves Parliament; delivers the Speech from the Throne; grants Royal Assent to Acts of Parliament. He also receives Royal visitors and Heads of Government during their official visits to Canada, and represents Canada abroad

Recording from VHS low quality. Not My Department was a Canadian television sitcom, which aired on CBC Television in 1987. It was based on Charles Gordon's comedic novel The Governor General's Bunny Hop. The show focused on a fictional Department of Regional Incentive Targets, a ministry whose sole job was to inherit files that other government ministries did not want to deal with. The series starred Harry Ditson as Gerald Angstrum; Shelley Peterson as Margaret Simmons; Robbie O'Neill as Robert; Alpha Boucher appeared as Henri; and also included Barry Stevens, Pierre Chagnon, Chris Wiggins, Robert Benson, Bonnie Brooks, James Edmond and Suzanne Coy. According to Andrew Harper, a representative of the UNHCR in Jordan, around 300 Syrian refugees crossed into Jordan on Saturday. He said the numbers are slightly lower than recent weeks "because of activities on the other side which is restricting movements coming across but also, I think, the full moon which makes it difficult for people to cross because people are much visible so they much prefer to come across during the cover of darkness." At the Zaatari camp on Sunday, a man named Abu Mohammad - a rebel fighter with the Free Syrian Army (FSA) - said he had fled to Jordan when he ran out of ammunition. "People are being killed (by Syrian government forces). I swear, people are being killed without committing any guilt, they did nothing," he said. Jordan and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on Saturday issued an urgent call to international donors for 700 (m) million (US) dollars to help handle the rapidly rising number of Syrian refugees seeking safe haven in the country. Some five-thousand Syrians crossed into Jordan in a 24-hour period earlier this week, adding to the more than 180-thousand living in the kingdom to escape their homeland's civil war. But we are confident that we will be able to walk the path that we have chosen for ourselves and that we will be able to reach our goal, which is a happy and united nation." Suu Kyi said Australia was a good example of diversity, combing elements of the East and the West, and said the country should retain it. "You do not have to go all Asian. I understand that this is the trend in Australia today, to try to become Asian-ised as it were. You are special because of your unique combination of the East and the West. Please retain what is special to you," she told the audience. On Thursday, she received two other honorary degrees from universities in Sydney. Suu Kyi is on a five-day visit to Australia, seeking the backing for changes to Myanmar's constitution, which currently prevents her from becoming president. "The recent and peaceful elections speak of the tremendous progress that has been made in creating peace and stability and building your commitment to democracy and your participating in the international community." Mateparae also said his country would continue to support for East Timor as its "focus moves from security to social and economic development to education and business and trade development." Mateparae is scheduled to attend the inauguration ceremony at midnight of East Timor's new president, former military commander Taur Matan Ruak. Queen and Prince Philip stand talking to David Johnston and his wife before going in STORYLINE: David Johnston, Canada's next governor general, travelled to Balmoral Castle in Scotland on Sunday and had his first official meeting with Britain's Queen Elizabeth II. Johnston, 69, the bilingual president of the University of Waterloo, will succeed Governor General Michaelle Jean on October 1 when her five-year term ends. Prime Minister Stephen Harper, in a statement about Johnston's visit, said the meeting "marks another step on the path to his installation as the Queen's representative in Canada." During the visit, the Queen invested Johnston as Commander of the Order of Military Merit and Commander of the Order of Merit for Police Forces. While Johnston has been a Companion of the Order of Canada since 1997, he will hold the title of Chancellor and Principal Companion of the Order upon installation. Also during the trip to Balmoral, in the Scottish highlands, Johnston's wife Sharon Johnston was invested as a Companion of the Order of Canada by the Queen.
