Toledo at interview STORYLINE: Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo has said that that exiled former president Alberto Fujimori should return to Peru to answer questions about crimes committed during his rule. Toledo was speaking during an interview with APTN on Friday, during his visit to the United States. Fujimori faces charges of abandonment of office, dereliction of duty and homicide in connection with two state-sponsored massacres in the early 1990s. He has denied any wrongdoing but refuses to return to Peru where he says he faces political persecution. Fujimori has been resident in his native Japan since he fled the country two years ago. Japan and Peru have no extradition treaty and Japanese law prohibits the extradition of its citizens to stand trial for crimes committed in other countries. Toledo on Friday also warned of forces conspiring to destabilise Peru's return to democracy, implying Fujimori's influence is still strong. Earlier on Friday, Toledo met World Bank president James Wolfensohn in Washington and signed a loan agreement for 50 (m) million (US) dollars to improve water supply and sanitation facilities in rural Peru.
