Castle Clinton or Fort Clinton, once known as Castle Garden, is a circular sandstone fort now located in Battery Park at the southern tip of Manhattan Island, New York City, in the United States. It is perhaps best remembered as America's first immigration station (predating Ellis Island), where more than 8 million people arrived in the U.S. from 1855 to 1890. Over its active life, it has also functioned as a beer garden, exhibition hall, theater, public aquarium, and finally today as a national monument.
Today, Castle Clinton stands approximately two blocks west of where Fort Amsterdam stood almost 400 years ago, when New York City was still known by the Dutch name New Amsterdam.
Construction began in 1808 and was completed in 1811. The fort, known as West Battery (sometimes South-west Battery), was designed by architects John McComb Jr. and Jonathan Williams. It was built on a small artificial island just off shore.
West Battery was intended to complement the three-tiered Castle Williams (still extant) on Governors Island, which was East Battery, to defend New York City from British forces in the tensions that marked the run-up to the War of 1812, but never saw action in that or any war. Subsequent landfill expanded Battery Park, and incorporated the fort into the mainland of Manhattan Island.

Patricia Lee "Patti" Smith (born December 30, 1946) is an American singer-songwriter, poet and visual artist, who became a highly influential component of the New York City punk rock movement with her 1975 debut album Horses.
Called the "Godmother of Punk", her work was a fusion of rock and poetry. Smith's most widely known song is "Because the Night", which was co-written with Bruce Springsteen and reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1978. In 2005, Patti Smith was named a Commander of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture, and in 2007, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. On November 17, 2010, she won the National Book Award for her memoir Just Kids. She is also a recipient of the 2011 Polar Music Prize.

If you're getting Statue of Liberty tickets at Castle Clinton by taking the #1 or red subway line, here are a couple of tips you need to know that will make things more stress free...
After getting off the number 1 subway at the South Ferry station, you'll find that the Castle Clinton ticket office is nowhere in sight. In fact, the first thing you see is the entrance to the Statue Island ferry -- which DOES NOT go to the statue. But if you look to your right beyond the staten island sign as you face it, away you can locate the path that leads to Castle Clinton .
Here's a map that will give you a better idea of the layout of battery park and which way you need to go. The most important thing you probably want to remember when you're heading away from the ferry entrance is that you want to keep the waters of New York harbor on your left.
Sometimes there's also a sign to indicate that the statue ticket office lies ahead, but honestly, the sign isn't always up...especially in winter. You might also spot a flagpole in that area, and that's what you want to head for.
Walk past the flagpole for a couple of landmarks that tell you you're heading in the right direction. Walk past the flagpole. Next is the Seaglass Carousel, which will be off to your right after you walk by the flags. As you walk a little farther along, you also get a great view of World Trade Center 1 on your right... it's the shiny 1776 foot building located near Ground Zero...
A you keep walking, you'll see a building in the distance that looks like an old fort...mainly because at one time, it was a fort known as the southwest battery. Keep heading toward it. When you arrive, you can enter through a relatively small entrance located closest to the water near the statue of liberty ferry boats, or you can go around to the front where there's a grander entrance...
Once inside, you'll notice that it's an open courtyard...the ticket windows are located in a round building off to one side. This is where you pick up your tickets.

The Seaglass Carousel is a "merry-go-round" ride like no other. After ten years of planning and construction, the $16 million attraction is now open in New York City's Battery Park.
Seaglass features 30 different sea creatures that glow, rotate and rise up and down.
Stage designer George Tsypin designed carousel's fish. Tsypin's other credits include the Opening Ceremony of the 2014 Sochi Olympics and Broadway (The Little Mermaid and Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark). In Seaglass, he envisioned capsules that allowed visitors to "become the fish." The experience is similar to being in a submarine with portholes you can look through.

Warsaw is a large and sprawling city of more than 1.7 million people that is split into somewhat uneven halves by the Wisła (Vistula) River. Most everything of interest to visitors is on the western side of the river around the modern financial district. Its centrepiece is the landmark Palace of Culture and Science (Pałac Kultury i Nauki), a Socialist-Realist confection which can be seen from virtually anywhere in the city.
The epicentre of Warsaw for visitors is the so-called Royal Route (Trakt Królewski), which runs north-south from the New and Old Towns, past the fashionable shops of Nowy Świat, the palaces that survived the war and the royal gardens of Łazienki Park, before reaching Wilanów Palace to the south of the city centre.
Warsaw's striking Old Town may look like it dates back several centuries but the old gal has barely reached middle age. The painstakingly rebuilt area was awarded a listing on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1980. Unmissable attractions in and around the Old Town include the Royal Castle, St John's Cathedral and the Citadel. Farther afield, make sure you visit the Warsaw Rising Museum for the story of the courageous men and women who rose up against their occupiers in WWII as well as the Palace of Culture and Science for the views.
No surprising for a city that was essentially rebuilt from the ground up after WWII, Warsaw offers an inordinate amount of green space, with leafy parks where rowing boats cruise past outdoor cafés, during the summer, and free classical concerts attract crowds in a scene far removed from the dull Communist-era images of Warsaw. And don't miss the palaces and other historical and cultural buildings in the city's splendid Łazienki and Wilanów Parks.
Warsaw's nightlife is one of the best in Eastern Europe today, with a multitude of bars and clubs scattered across the city as well as a generous dose of more highbrow entertainment such as classical music concerts and opera. Whatever you do, don't leave town without sampling the tipple of choice here in these parts: wódka (vodka). It comes in a myriad of flavours and hues - from myśliwska (`hunter's vodka'), which tastes a bit like gin, and wiśniówka (flavoured with cherries) to pieprzówka (pepper) and the famous żubrówka ('bison vodka'), which is flavoured with grass and favoured by the beasties in Bialowieza National Park). Poles traditionally drank vodka neat -- never in cocktails.
The dining options have improved no end in Warsaw, with international cuisine regularly featured alongside Polish standards. And Polish cuisine has also undergone some major transformations, lightening up old favourites with less fat and employing fresher ingredients.

Here's some video I shot on the Statue Of Liberty Cruise Line during a visit to the Statue in July 2015. After picking up tickets at Castle Clinton in Battery Park, we went through security in a white building along the dock and then boarded the ferry. The ride over was fabulous, with great views of 1 World Trade Center, Governor's Island, Ellis Island, the Hudson River and the New York skyline. You could also see the Verrazano Narrows Bridge in the distance. The tall building on the Jersey shore is Goldman Tower. Beautiful day and great views of New York harbor.
